Soobin Outed? IVE's Creativity Stall, Can Boy Groups Release Good Music? & LNGSHOT's Lukewarm Return + More
2026/10/23
CAUGHT IN THE K-SPOT IS BACK! 📩 More messy dilemmas, questionable decisions and unsolicited advice from yours truly! From complicated friendships to romantic confusion, we're getting into the situations people somehow find themselves in. Got a relationship dilemma, friendship drama or a life situation you need an outside perspective on? Email [email protected]. You can remain anonymous! NOW, ABOUT THIS WEEK'S K-POP CHAOS… Did a Chinese influencer just cross a serious line with TXT's Soobin? And why are we still treating speculation about idols' sexuality as entertainment? This week, I'm also questioning what's happening with IVE. From their recent musical direction to their choreography, have they lost some of the creative spark that made them stand out? And then there's my increasingly controversial opinion about K-pop's boy groups. Why does JYP seem to get the musical direction of its girl groups right while so many of its boy group releases leave me completely underwhelmed? Are boy group fans actually prioritising the music, or has attraction to the members become the main event? Yes, we're going there. 😭 We're also discussing: Taeyong: Why joking about his English accent and calling it a "faccent" raises bigger questions about stereotypes and homophobia. Lee Soo-man vs SM Entertainment: Reports surrounding SM artists mentioning A2O lite and NEON, and why I'm increasingly interested in what Lee Soo-man could bring back to K-pop. Jay Park's LNGSHOT: Is the music already sounding too familiar? IVE's creative direction: Are the songs and choreography keeping up with the group's potential? Boy groups vs girl groups: Have K-pop companies become too comfortable selling personalities instead of developing interesting music? Plenty of opinions, a few unpopular takes and some questions K-pop fans might not enjoy answering.
A2O Lite & A2O Soul: K-pop's "Dark" Side | Minors, AI & Exploitation… Is It That Simple?
2026/10/15
CAUGHT IN THE K-SPOT IS BACK! 📩 This week's dilemmas are MESSY. We've got friendship group drama that's spiralling out of control and a gay man trying to navigate a very confusing situation with a seemingly bicurious male colleague. Mixed signals, questionable behaviour and plenty of unsolicited advice from yours truly. 😭 GOT A DILEMMA? Send your relationship problems, friendship drama or general life chaos to [email protected]. You can remain anonymous! NOW, ONTO THE K-POP DRAMA… Is K-pop's so-called "dark side" really as straightforward as people make it out to be? Lee Soo-man's A2O Lite and A2O Soul have sparked some fascinating conversations about minors debuting, AI-generated content, exploitation and what makes a compelling fifth-generation K-pop group. This week we're unpacking: A2O Soul vs A2O Lite: Star quality, group chemistry, styling and whether Lee Soo-man's new groups are delivering. Minors in K-pop: Is debuting young inherently exploitative, or should we be focusing on working conditions and safeguarding? AI in entertainment: Where's the line between creative assistance and replacing actual artists? Lee Soo-man's legacy: How much of SM Entertainment's signature identity can really be attributed to Lee Soo-man and Yoo Young-jin? Fifth-generation K-pop: Why chemistry, individuality and genuine stage presence matter more than ever. The comment-section wars: Why does constructive criticism so often get mistaken for hate? We're questioning the assumptions, challenging the double standards and asking whether some of K-pop's biggest debates have become a little too black and white.
Sophia Returns to KATSEYE! Lee Soo-man's New Groups, T.O.P + Nana Dating Drama & Dilemmas
2026/10/09
CAUGHT IN THE K-SPOT IS HERE! 📩 Three dilemmas, three questionable situations, and apparently I'm now qualified to give relationship advice. This week we're tackling a college situationship, a long-distance relationship where someone's fallen in love after just ONE MONTH, and another dilemma that needs unpacking. GOT A DILEMMA OF YOUR OWN? Send your relationship problems, friendship drama, awkward situations or general life mess to [email protected] for a chance to have your dilemma featured on the podcast. You can stay anonymous! NOW, ONTO THE K-POP MESS... Lee Soo-man is officially making his return to K-pop with TWO new groups, A20 SOUL and A20 lite, preparing to debut before SM Entertainment's much-anticipated SMTR25. How has the man who helped build SM managed to get his new acts out first?! We're getting into his comeback, the new groups and what this means for the industry. Elsewhere, KATSEYE's Sophia finally has a confirmed return date following her hiatus, T.O.P and Nana are experiencing backlash after confirming their dating and BE BOYS member Takuma has sparked questions about his whereabouts following a vacation. New groups, old industry legends, dating speculation and listeners making questionable romantic decisions
ALLDAY PROJECT CRASH + LE SSERAFIM, KATSEYE Sabotage Rumours & aoen Ruka Controversy
2026/10/02
This week we’re getting into the controversy surrounding aoen’s Ruka and his connection to a 13-year-old former dance student, the speculation that followed, and his response to everything being said online. Then there’s a VERY messy blind item alleging that girl groups under HYBE subsidiaries have been working against their own companies and even sabotaging their own releases. It’s an anonymous blind item, so obviously we’re treating it as speculation, but there is a LOT to unpack. I also get into why my next ALLDAY PROJECT reaction might be staying on Patreon, my growing frustration with THEBLACKLABEL’s musical direction, and why wanting more from a group you like is not the same thing as hating them. And for this week’s Hot Take: can we acknowledge that K-pop’s beauty standards can be harmful while also acknowledging that appearance is part of what idols are commercially hired to sell? NEW: CAUGHT IN THE K-SPOT 📩 Got a dilemma you want me to answer on the podcast? Send it anonymously or otherwise to: [email protected]
UNIS’ Contract Is OVER + Jackson Wang’s Controversial Roc Nation Move | Jessica Jung Returns + More
2026/09/25
UNIS’ time as a group has come to an end, so we’re talking about their contract and what the future may hold Then Jackson Wang has officially signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation for management, and the timing gave me a LOT to talk about. What does Roc Nation actually offer Jackson at this stage of his career, and what are the wider connotations of aligning yourself with Jay-Z and his company right now? We also get into SM celebrating 100M views for Girls’ Generation’s Genie while editing Jessica out, Jessica slowly finding her way back into the Korean mainstream, and EXO’s Suho, SEVENTEEN’s S.Coups and BOYNEXTDOOR’s Jaehyun talking about the realities of being group leaders. And this week’s Micah’s Pick is CLOSE YOUR EYES with Open Your Eyes.
BLACKPINK’s Lisa Addresses the N-Word Controversy | Seulgi & Irene’s Japanese Comeback Disaster Taerae + More
2026/09/17
BLACKPINK’s Lisa has finally addressed the N-word controversy in her new documentary, so today we’re getting into what she actually said, the apology, and some of the wider conversation around it. Also, Seulgi & Irene have somehow dropped an entire Japanese EP with NO MV, teasers or much of a rollout at all... but the music is here, so obviously we need to talk about it. Taerae also spoke about actively working on his vocal technique, I’m wondering where on earth UNCHILD has gone, ALL DAY PROJECT are already coming back with CRASH and FIVE singles, and CYE have dropped their highlight medley. Plenty to yap about this week.
&TEAM & EVAN Comebacks: Keep Sauceless White Men OUT of K-Pop | BLACKPINK, CYE + More
2026/09/11
&TEAM and EVAN are the main event this week because I have THOUGHTS about these comebacks, with examples because apparently I need to show my working. We’re also discussing why certain producers need to stop bringing sauceless white-man energy into K-pop, BLACKPINK potentially nearing the end of the group, CYE’s 7-track album and HEARTS2HEARTS’ “Moonride.” And yes, Bang chan caught some strays cos of his pick me-ism!
THE BOYZ Kevin Calls Out K-Pop’s Industry | ENHYPEN, Taemin, ATEEZ, KiiiKiii + More
2026/09/03
THE BOYZ's Kevin has been speaking candidly about the K-pop industry, cultural appropriation, capitalism and why he believes K-pop fans deserve better. There were quite a few points I found myself agreeing with, so that's the centre of today's discussion as I get into what he said, where I think his criticism is justified and the uncomfortable relationship K-pop has always had with borrowing from other cultures while operating as an aggressively commercial industry. There's also a LOT happening elsewhere. ENHYPEN are already working on their next album and Ni-ki somehow received backlash just for mentioning it, ATEEZ are coming back in November, KiiiKiii ended promotions without a music-show win, XngHan & Xoul have introduced four new Japanese members, and Kim Soo-hyun's appearance at the AAAs is facing protests. I also get into the SKIBIDI backlash, why calling every criticism of it “it's just brainrot!” misses the point, and Taemin's latest album, which sent me into a completely different conversation about idols leaving the companies that built their musical identities. Creative freedom is great, but I'm increasingly convinced that some idols are exceptional products and performers without necessarily being particularly good at curating themselves as recording artists. And for this week's Micah's Picks, we're back with TUIDE! Sunkiss and ABD have officially made the cut after I was literally arguing with their fans about their debut last week.
TUIDE Backlash Proves K-Pop Fans Can’t Handle Fair Criticism | Mark, BLACKPINK + More
2026/08/27
TUIDE have officially debuted, and while I found the song a little underwhelming, the bigger story for me became the reaction to my review. Some people took a pretty fair critique VERY personally, which opened up a wider conversation about how defensive K-pop fans can get when you don’t immediately praise a group they like. I also push back on the idea that I have some huge SM bias, especially considering I was just as critical of HEARTS2HEARTS when they debuted last year. Apparently consistency only counts when people agree with you lol. Elsewhere, I discuss Mark apologising again and previewing new music, BLACKPINK’s solo careers, and I’m officially introducing Micah’s Picks, starting with ENHYPEN’s Bad For You. It's essentially another form of Anatomy of a Song, but it’ll now occasionally appear at the end of my weekly episodes whenever there’s a song I really want to dissect instead of always needing its own separate episode.
Vernon Says K-Pop & Pop Sound the Same… He’s Missing Something | BTS Chris Brown Backlash, TUIDE, ALD1 + More
2026/08/20
Is K-pop really becoming indistinguishable from Western pop? Vernon recently spoke about the similarities between the two, and while I understand his point, I think there are some pretty important nuances missing from that conversation, especially when you look at the history of K-pop and Black American music. I also get into the increasingly repetitive Stray Kids-coded soundscape popping up across from NEXZ, from the deep husky voices to nonsense hooks and production gimmicks, and why acknowledging similarities between artists shouldn't automatically be treated as an insult. Elsewhere, I discuss the Hearts2Hearts wig controversy and apologies, the backlash surrounding BTS attending Chris Brown's concert, ALD1's mini album finally convincing me they can make GOOD music, TUIDE's promising highlight medley and the latest statement from Gunil's lawyers,
BLACKPINK's 10th Anniversary Was a MESS + Jay Park Responds to LNGSHOT Copying Claims
2026/08/13
Today we're getting into BLACKPINK's 10th anniversary and... what exactly was THAT?? From the lacklustre celebrations to Jisoo getting emotional, I talk about why such a huge milestone for one of K-pop's biggest groups deserved SO much more. Then there's WAYFBOY's debut, the immediate comparisons and accusations of them being inspired by LNGSHOT, and Jay Park's response to the whole thing. I get into where inspiration ends and copying begins, because some of the similarities definitely got people TALKING. Elsewhere, I discuss XngHan outselling Red Velvet by over 10K copies, Gunil leaving Xdinary Heroes, EVAN announcing Death of Me for September 7th, Sophia going on hiatus from BORESEYE, Mark's connection to a Christian group, plus my thoughts on Gayo Daejeon.
SMTR25, SM's Finances and future release, ENHYPEN & Toxic Fan Culture
2026/08/06
In today's episode I take a deep dive into SM Entertainment's latest financial report, looking at the company's release schedule, future plans and why I have more questions than answers when it comes to SMTR25's debut. I also look ahead at August's packed release schedule, including upcoming Japanese releases from BOYNEXTDOOR, HEARTS2HEARTS and more. The second half of the episode focuses on the tragic story surrounding the Engene who died following online harassment, leading into a wider discussion about fandom culture, the responsibility artists and companies have, and why I think this conversation goes far beyond K-pop. I also touch on THE BOYZ continuing as nine members and the latest developments surrounding New's departure.
Red Velvet Hold Back Their Harmonies on 'Velvet Summer' | Anatomy of a Song
2026/08/03
Red Velvet are BACK, so of course I had to put 'Velvet Summer' through the Anatomy treatment! This time though... surprisingly not THAT much to uncover? The harmonies and layering are noticeably more laid back and simple than what we usually get from Red Velvet, which is a bit of a shame considering how ridiculous their vocal arrangements can be. I also would've LOVED more R&B on an album called Velvet Summer 😭 but thankfully "Orchestra" came through and gave me some of what I was craving. Still VERY happy to have them back and hear these voices together again. A simpler Anatomy episode this time, but an interesting one nonetheless!
BTS vs The GRAMMYs? HYBE Finally Speaks Out + KARD's Disappointing Sales
2026/07/30
Today we're diving into HYBE's surprisingly direct comments about the GRAMMYs after BTS' nominations and what this whole situation says about international recognition, timing and whether the Recording Academy moved the goalposts just as BTS were at their strongest. I also discuss the reports that BTS' "Butter" and "Dynamite" performances have been removed from the GRAMMYs website, KARD's disbandment and disappointing album sales, my thoughts on Red Velvet's album medley and what it says about SM's idea of "Velvet", as well as Kim Soohyun's return to the public eye and why I find his return so unsettling. As always, plenty of opinions, industry discussion and a few tangents along the way
aespa's Japanese Mini Has Me Wanting an R&B Album | 'Kiss N Tell', 'In halo', 'Orbit Pop' + More!
2026/07/27
aespa's Japanese mini album turned out to be a really enjoyable listen, but what stood out most to me was just how sultry and natural their harmonies are. They feel completely tailor-made for the group's voices, and after hearing this project, I'd absolutely love to hear SM lean into a full R&B release in the future. There weren't loads of surprising vocal moments this time around, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Instead, this mini reminded me just how well aespa's voices blend together, especially on songs like "Kiss N Tell." I also hope SM keeps this brighter, upbeat direction for their next mini because the reception to this era has been so positive. As always, I break down the vocals using my Civilian, Athlete, Olympian and World Class ranking system, while looking at the harmonies, layering and arrangements that make these songs work.
