Fishing for Your Mental Health: $120K Raised for Gumboot Friday – Aaron Styles
2026/10/15
Recorded on the Daiwa stand at the NZ Boat Fish Dive Expo. This Quick Cast is with Aaron Styles, founder of Just Another Fisherman. Aaron grew up a Bay of Plenty fisherman, surfcasting through the night beside a fire with his dad. Fishing was always part of his life, but his career started in fashion, where he spent six years as head of design at Huffer. During that time he noticed a gap in the market. Fishing gear was either promo-style merch from the general brands or nothing at all. Nobody was making clothing that showed what the fishing lifestyle actually feels like: party shirts with fish prints, or proper technical shorts that weren’t just a pair of stubbies. That’s where Just Another Fisherman came from, 14 years ago. Since then it’s slowly grown into new product groups, each one built to solve a problem on the water. They’re now on their third generation of winter bibs, which get used for everything from tuna to soft baiting. The crewman shorts, with stretch, magnet closures and nothing to rust, have earned the nickname β€œthe Toyota Hilux of shorts,” and some blokes buy four pairs at a time. We also talk about Anglers Escape, the event Aaron started. It’s a fishing comp, but the fishing isn’t really the point. You turn up up north with a crew of mates for three to four days, all catered, and that’s your time out, rain or shine. The prize-giving finishes with auctions and raffles, and every dollar goes to Gumboot Friday. Over the last four or five years they’ve raised around $120,000 for youth mental health. The message is simple: when you ring your mate to ask how the marlin fishing’s going, ask how life’s going too. The fishing is serious as well. Last year 26 snapper over 80cm were caught across 150 anglers and only one was kept. The teams prize came down to the last hour. We also cover his son’s first marlin, caught at age nine on a father-son overnight in the Bay of Islands, a released 42kg kingi on topwater, and an overnight off Raglan where two of them raised 11 marlin in an hour and a half. Aaron also shares what he’s learned from the best marlin crews about patience and process, and how he still makes sure fishing stays his time out. Tight Lines, Loose Lips
The Couple Who Built a Life Around Fishing | Frank & Jane (Beyond the Coast)
2026/10/08
Frank and Jane are the couple behind Beyond the Coast, a YouTube channel built around fishing, camping and exploring their own backyard. They've turned that into a lifestyle a lot of us would love to have. Frank grew up on the Coromandel and started fishing at about five years old alongside his mum Julie, a well-known rock-fishing legend in the area. His stepdad, still a great fisherman today, was big into straylining, so Frank spent his childhood baiting and burleying off the rocks and out on the boat. A move to Australia and city life took him away from fishing for a while. Jane grew up on Sydney's Northern Beaches with a beach and surfing background rather than a fishing one. When the pair moved back to New Zealand about seven years ago and settled on the coast, Frank got straight back into it, and he picked up the soft-bait rods too. The content side started almost by accident. They'd planned to launch a channel together, but Covid hit. Jane is a nurse by trade and was working as an essential worker, while Frank, a self-employed builder and joiner, couldn't work. So Frank started his own channel solo, editing full-length videos on his phone. Once Jane could ease off work a few years later, they finally launched Beyond the Coast together. Neither of them comes from a tech, filming or editing background. Everything they know, they learned on YouTube. Recorded live at the NZ Boat Fish Dive Expo as part of the Daiwa Quick Casts, this one covers: β€’ Frank's land-based method for big snapper: Google Maps scouting, swirly dirty days, homemade burley minced in a garden shredder, and big fresh baits β€’Their rock gear: Daiwa Freeswimmers, 40lb braid, a single 6/0 hook and no weight β€’Upgrading from a 4.95 to a 5.1m boat, and how it's changed their shallow-water snapper fishing in 3m of water β€’A tribute to Frank's late mum Julie, whose 18lb snapper landed her on the front cover of a fishing mag β€’Jane's honest advice for anyone wanting to start a fishing YouTube channel β€’The Samoa trip where their gear never made it onto the plane, and Frank's solo return mission chasing GTs Thanks to Daiwa NZ for making the Quick Casts happen.
You Never Catch Anything on the Couch Matt Jurlina Lands a 250kg Bluefin with a UFC Heavyweight on the Rod
2026/10/05
A 5.8 metre trailer boat. A UFC heavyweight strapped into the harness. And a Pacific bluefin tuna that pulled the scales to 243kg bled, gutted and gilled. Matt Jurlina is a plumber, a Muriwai beach launcher and one of the Chums boys β€” a crew of mates who grew up rural and never stopped chasing fish together. He's also the bloke who'll tell you about the trips that went wrong: the $15,000 weekend, the four-hour swordfish lost at the leader, and ten big broadbill missions this season for zero fish. Then one dead-looking day off Cape Brett, with Brando "The Balkan Bear" PeričiΔ‡ on the rod, one live blue koheru changed everything. Matt walks us through the bite, three leader shots, the call to take the fish, and how it ended up feeding more than 100 people. We also get into his first marlin (no gaff, no gloves, no electronics, 128kg), why live baiting works from snapper to 250kg tuna, and the one word he wants you to take away: confidence. Cool People Doing Cool Shit β€” Scott Malcon, Daiwa NZ
2026/10/01
Scott Malcon has been in the NZ fishing industry his whole working life β€” Rebel Sport, Fish City, then Brittain Wynyard, where he went from sales rep to running the Daiwa brand in New Zealand for 16 years. His philosophy from day one: get cool people doing cool things. In this Quick Cast Scott covers growing up rowing out to Browns Bay reef with his dad, why shallow-water soft baiting on the Stabi at the Barrier is his happy place, a blue marlin near 300kg caught for an 80-plus year-old grandfather, and the day a 50-plus kilo kingfish came over the rail at White Island and went straight back. We also pick his brain on deep dropping β€” finding uncharted rocks, live jack mackerel for bait, drift set-up, electric reel choice β€” and how 60–70% of Daiwa's NZ rod range is built specifically for Kiwi anglers. Quick Casts are short, sharp sit-downs recorded live at the NZ Boat Fish Dive Expo in partnership with Daiwa NZ. Kingfish, Workups and Comp-Winning Snapper an Hour From Auckland β€” Jonathan Watts
2026/09/21
Jonathan Watts runs Northside Adventures, a Hauraki Gulf charter operation he started in late 2018 β€” barely a season and a half of trading before the March 2020 lockdown shut the water down. He grew up 130 kilometres from the sea in the English Midlands, float fishing canals on a pushbike, then spent four years surfcasting the Welsh coast before landing in New Zealand in 2001 and having to relearn everything. That freshwater stealth-and-presentation background is exactly why he now fishes the Gulf the way he does, and it's why the biggest snapper in one year's Lure Masters came off his boat. With Lure Masters a week away, the soft bait snapper content is where this one earns its keep. Jonathan breaks down how he fishes shallow water for big fish: drifting into the spot rather than driving over it, setting up long drifts along weed lines, cycling motor oil, bruised banana and bright orange across the crew until a colour proves itself, 15lb braid to a 25–30lb fluoro trace, and the line that'll start arguments β€” in shallow water the big fish are always on the end of the longest cast, never under the boat. He also breaks down finding winter workups out towards Great Barrier: 7x50 binoculars, whale spouts on the horizon, terns before the workups form, and what it means when a gannet is flying dead straight at 27 knots. Then the kingfish method β€” Jonathan's full live-bait routine from a charter skipper's seat. Catching bait before the sun's up on the southern side of Kawau, depth-coloured braid so every angler knows exactly where their bait is, sinker above the swivel so a busted-off fish isn't towing lead, reading the bait ball on the sounder (grainy and spread means no kings; darkening red and walling off means something's on it), shearwaters as a dead giveaway over the reefs, why spot lock changed everything, the "at least three seconds" rule on circle hooks that almost nobody manages, and the proper spike-bleed-slurry routine if you're taking a king home. As a bonus, the story of the biggest snapper of one year's Lure Masters β€” landed off his boat in 15–20 metres at Little Barrier on a fusilier-coloured soft bait after a morning hiding from the weather behind Kawau. Season-opener stuff for anyone fishing the Gulf this spring. Full episode is on the Get The Net podcast β€” watch on YouTube, or listen on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Solo on a Jetski, 100kg Bluefin, One Shark Trying to Steal It
2026/09/07
This episode contains footage shot by Matt Ringot (@FrenchAdrift) and remains his own content β€” best viewed in video mode. Matt Ringot β€” known online as French Adrift β€” grew up fishing lakes and rivers in France with his grandparents before landing in New Zealand ten years ago and falling hard for saltwater. He's since gone from an old Cresta Craft in Wellington Harbour, to a kayak that nearly got the better of him twice, to building his fishing life almost entirely around a jetski β€” chasing snapper, kingfish and now game fish solo off the West Coast. In this episode Matt breaks down his jetski jigging setup β€” line, leader, hook choice and the drift-speed-and-vertical-angle fundamentals that separate a good session from a skunked one β€” and explains why he hasn't taken bait fishing since switching to jigs. He also gets into the real safety lessons from years of solo missions: tethering to the ski, carrying three forms of communication, and never, ever going it alone on a game fishing run. The centrepiece of the chat is Matt's first bluefin tuna β€” a 90-minute solo fight in building swell off the Bay of Plenty that turned into a genuine tug-of-war with a 2.5m shark trying to tear the fish off his gaff mid-fight. It's one of the wilder landings featured on the show, and Matt is refreshingly honest about the mistakes he made along the way and what he'd do differently next time. Solo jetski missions, shark encounters, and a 100kg-plus tuna landed the hard way β€” full episode is on the Get The Net podcast. Watch on YouTube, or listen on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. 7-Hour Swordfish Battle, One NZ Women's Record β€” Helen Horrocks
2026/08/24
Helen Horrocks is a Scottish-born sailor turned game fisherman turned boating coach, now based in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand. In this episode she traces her unlikely path into fishing β€” from scavenging tangled line off riverbanks as a kid, to kayak guiding in Paihia, to buying her own yacht so she could learn to skipper on her own terms. That same yacht became the platform for her game fishing obsession, sparked by a triple marlin strike that hooked her for good. Helen now holds a ratified New Zealand women's record for broadbill swordfish β€” a 279.3kg fish landed during the Cater Marine Opua Small Boats Tournament off the Hokianga coast, after a brutal seven-hour stand-up fight that left her legs permanently scarred from the gimbal. She talks candidly about the fight itself, the physical and mental toll of chasing records on light tackle, and a separate, far scarier night targeting a ten-kilo bluefin record that nearly ended in disaster on the run home in the dark. Along the way she shares the gear, mentors and trial-and-error lessons that shaped her as an angler and skipper. She also talks about "She's Got Game," the coaching business she runs alongside her marketing day job, built to give women hands-on, practical experience skippering and fishing rather than just theory. It's a conversation about obsession, complacency, teamwork, and why she thinks the best way for women to break into boating is simple: stop waiting for an invite and buy the boat yourself. The 30-Pound Snapper He Waited 10 Years to Catch β€” Andre Kassal
2026/08/10
Andre Kassal β€” @Drefish, Ocean Angler pro staff β€” moved to New Zealand from Germany in 2011 chasing trout, and stumbled into saltwater fishing almost by accident after watching a fishing show on TV. Fifteen years later he's personally landed three snapper over 85cm β€” five between him and his wife Kie β€” from a 4.5-metre boat Kie talked him into buying, all fished in water so shallow he can see the bottom. This episode covers his shift from German freshwater lure fishing (Zander, pike, perch) to New Zealand's shallow-water snapper game, why he never fishes deeper than 20 metres even when the fish are there, and the real ecological reason big snapper matter more than most people realise β€” snapper and crayfish are both key predators of kina, and losing enough of either lets kina strip the kelp bare. The centrepiece is the story of his personal-best 30-pound (13.9kg) snapper, caught on the exact day marking ten years since he arrived in New Zealand β€” and what happened when he spotted the same fish again, two years later, in a stranger's photo on Facebook. Kie gets her due too β€” her own 85cm personal best, landed solo in risky conditions, held the boat record for years. βœ… Andre Kassal @Drefish βœ… Ocean Angler ⏱️ Chapters 0:00 – Meet Andre Kassal 10:00 – From Germany to New Zealand's Shallows 20:00 – The 30-Pound Anniversary Snapper 30:00 – Overfishing, Kina Barrens, and Why Big Snapper Matter 40:00 – Gear, Ocean Angler, and the Softbait System 50:00 – Reading Conditions: Tides, Moon, and Overcast Days 1:00:00 – The Hidden Kingfish of Auckland Harbour 1:10:00 – Kie's Record-Breaking 85cm Snapper 1:20:00 – Mentors, Advice for Young Anglers 🌟 Links & Socials YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@getthenet_nz Instagram: @getthenet_nz | TikTok: @getthenet_nz | Facebook: @getthenet_nz 🎡 Music: Proctor (Topher Mohr & Alex Elena), Satellites (Swello), Momentum (Zplit) πŸŽ₯ Shot on Sony A7iii + Sennheiser Mics, edited in Adobe Premiere Pro, shot/edited/produced by Nick Hoyle
$497,000 on the Other Side of Three-Meter Seas Mark Phillips + Jason van Esch
2026/07/27
Part 2 picks up where the action is β€” sounder marks, Rays Bream bars, throwaway waypoints, and the discipline to ditch a predetermined plan the moment something better appears on screen. The conversation turns to the pre-fishing mission that set up the biggest result of their careers: bait stacked at Whale Rock, a fish spotted off Cuvier, and a weather window that most boats decided to sit out. The conditions were brutal β€” three-and-a-half metre seas, wet weather gear purchased the morning of, and Cor (Jason's dad) calling it off the moment he saw what they were heading into. Mark and Jason went anyway. What happened next is the kind of story that gets told at prize-givings for years. A 384 kilo black marlin. Three hours on the rod. A trailer boat, two blokes, and a fish that took everything they had. The chaos around the weigh-in is worth the price of admission alone β€” Scott from Rayglass tying off the bill, Cor somewhere between 8 and 16 beers deep, and Mark parking the boat and walking off it because he was completely done. Second place overall, the heaviest billfish in the competition, and $497,000 split three ways. 🎧 Watch on YouTube β€” Search Get The Net πŸ“± @getthenet_nz on Instagram, TikTok & Facebook 🎡 Music: Proctor (Topher Mohr & Alex Elena) | Satellites (Swello) | Momentum (Zplit) | Source β€” YouTube Audio Library πŸŽ₯ Shot on Sony A7iii + Sennheiser Mics | Edited in Adobe Premiere Pro | Shot, Edited & Produced by Nick Hoyle
$70K, Three Swords, and a Chip on Their Shoulder Mark Phillips + Jason van Esch
2026/07/20
Mark Phillips grew up in Whitianga casting hand lines with Mum and Dad before discovering soft baiting and slowly working his way into competition fishing. Jason van Esch, a builder and tiler from Auckland, found his way back to fishing through camping trips, trailer boat comps, and a burning desire to be the guy walking away with the reels. A bromance forged on a building site and sealed somewhere out past Cuvier. Part 1 is a front-to-back masterclass in what it takes to compete at the Kubota level β€” from the early trailer boat days chasing snapper prizes, to the first Kubota entry in 2021 where a tagged stripy and a stranger calling them "little bitches" at prize-giving lit a fire that's been burning ever since. The stories you won't forget: Mark's first blue marlin on a broken rod at 500 metres. Jason's first blue, lost after an hour with no gimbal. Kylie's five-and-a-half-hour sword battle. Thirteen winds from a monster they never got. Part 1 ends with three swords tagged, $70,000 in the pocket, and a chip on their shoulder the size of a black marlin. 🎧 Watch on YouTube β€” Search Get The Net πŸ“± @getthenet_nz on Instagram, TikTok & Facebook 🎡 Music: Proctor (Topher Mohr & Alex Elena) | Satellites (Swello) | Momentum (Zplit) | Source β€” YouTube Audio Library πŸŽ₯ Shot on Sony A7iii + Sennheiser Mics | Edited in Adobe Premiere Pro | Shot, Edited & Produced by Nick Hoyle
Why You're NOT Finding the Bluefin!! Ocean Intelligence Secrets | Matt Shuker
2026/07/06
Matt Shuker built a business tracking the ocean so Marine Intel members never fish blind. Marine Intel started with a marlin trip to Westport and a mates group chat. Now he’s directing triple marlin strikes from a garden centre car parkMarine Intel delivers custom daily ocean reports to game fishermen across the country, decoding satellite data, sea surface temperatures, subsurface thermoclines, and chlorophyll blooms into plain English: here's where the fish should be, here's why. Eighteen months in, it's his full-time life β€” and it all started because a trip to Westport didn't go the way it was supposed to. In this episode Nick and Matt go deep on the science of finding fish. What does a game fisherman actually need to look at on a chart? Why do bluefin behave like long-haul truckers β€” pulling off at the same productive stops year after year? How does the green-to-blue edge rule work, and when does the biggest fish of the year completely ignore it? Matt breaks down both winter and summer oceanography, the South Island bluefin migration window, and why checking the wind map isn't enough β€” you need to know what the water was doing before the window opened. There's a full breakdown of the tools and software he uses, plus the story of directing a client onto a triple Marlin strike from a garden centre, just by pulling up charts on his phone. There's also a safety conversation that every NZ game fisherman needs to hear. Matt was 18 miles away when a father and son's trailer boat was caught in a factory trawler's rope off Greymouth β€” in the middle of the night, in cold South Island water, with no coastguard and no helicopter within range. Their Mayday call was two words. The boat sank. They survived β€” rescued by Valhalla, who were cooking a roast when the call came in. This episode is bluefin season listening. He broke his back for a fish | 4x NZ Surfcasting Champion | Chad Prentice
2026/06/22
Chad Prentice is a four-time New Zealand Surfcasting Champion and Shimano representative who has spent his life finding the most inaccessible stretches of coastline in the country and figuring out how to fish them. From skipping school in Wairoa to hitch a ride to the beach with cat's meat for bait, to swimming rivers in the dark at 3am with a full pack to win national titles, Chad's approach to land-based fishing is as hard out as it gets. In this episode, Nick and Chad break down the full art of reading a surf beach β€” water colour, wave period, sand ridges, tide, moon phase, and why where you plant your rod stand is the single most important decision you'll make. Chad also gets into slide baiting for kingfish in the surf, why going as light as possible creates the most opportunities, and how the same principles that apply to boat fishing apply just as much when your feet are planted on the sand. The stories are something else. Two national title campaigns that involved 3am river crossings, pterodactyl-sized mozzies on 90 Mile Beach, and carrying a full load of competition fish out on foot across some of the most rugged coastline in New Zealand. Then there's the time at Cape Maria van Diemen where a collapsing volcanic rock sent Chad fifteen metres onto his back, broke his neck and spine in three places, and put a knife through his bag into his back β€” and he still looked at the conditions and thought they were good. A roosterfish in Puerto Rico is still on the bucket list. Everything else, he's pretty much done. 🎧 Listen on Spotify & Apple Podcasts | Watch on YouTube β€” Search Get The Net βœ… Chad Prentice: https://www.facebook.com/hardcoreoutdoorsnz ⏱️ Chapters: 0:00 Meet Chad 15:00 Winning the Nationals 30:00 Reading a Surf Beach 45:00 The Fall at Cape Maria 1:00:00 Slide Baiting & Kingfish in the Surf 1:15:00 Gear, Line Diameter & Going Light πŸ”— Links & Socials: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@getthenet_nz Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/id1824558692 βœ… Follow Us: Instagram: @getthenet_nz | TikTok: @getthenet_nz | Facebook: @getthenet_nz 🎡 Music: Proctor - Topher Mohr & Alex Elena | Satellites - Swello | Momentum - Zplit | Source: YouTube Audio Library
The Man Who Always Finds the Fish β€” Roy Pulvers
2026/06/08
Roy Pulvers is one of Auckland's most recognised charter skippers β€” more than a decade on the Hauraki Gulf, running Fish 'N Dips Charters and now Triton Charters, and one of the first operators in New Zealand to run lure-only charters. Originally from overseas and self-taught through sheer time on the water, Roy has built a reputation for simply finding fish. If you see his boat heading somewhere with purpose, you follow it. In this episode, Nick and Roy cover the full picture of what it takes to fish the Gulf at the highest level β€” reading workups, understanding bird behaviour, using technology such as BirdRadar to cut search time and maximise action, and why slowing down sometimes means finding more. Roy breaks down his approach to lure selection, kingfish behaviour, why barometric pressure matters more than most people realise, and the art of teaching complete beginners to catch fish on lures from day one. There are some brilliant stories along the way β€” a striped marlin fixated on a snapper caught inside the Gulf while jigging with 400mm jigs, wrapping itself around its bill and fins three times in a row; a 2nd kingfish of a lifetime, finally caught after years of chasing it in the same place; and a yellowfin session with clients between Rakino and the Noises that produced 21 fish in a single day. Roy also discusses the state of the Gulf, why he thinks there's more of everything out there right now, and why pelagics pushing inside the harbour is something he hasn't seen in 23 years until recently. His worst day on the water? Any day he's stuck on land. The Trophy Snapper Equation | Stray lining Secrets Revealed | Connor Scott
2026/05/25
Connor Scott is a career skipper out of West Haven,Auckland, and when it comes to stray lining for trophy snapper, he's built a system that's as dialled as it gets. Growing up fishing with his dad from the rocks at a spot they called Broken Ankle Point, Connor has spent his whole lifechasing snapper β€” and after years on the water professionally, he's broken down exactly what separates the people who consistently find big fish from the oneswho don't. In this episode, Nick and Connor go deep on the art of straylining β€” reading current, presenting bait naturally, understanding how snapper relate to structure, and why most people are fishing the wrong spots for the wrong reasons. Connor talks through his entire system, from finding the mark to keeping fish coming once you're on them, and why the small details that most anglers overlook are actually the difference between a feed and a trophy. There's plenty of texture along the way β€” Connor'sbackground running charter boats and ferries, what fatigue management looks like as a professional skipper, and some cracking yarns about big sessions and the ones that nearly got away. But the real gold in this episode is in thedetail β€” the kind of hard-won knowledge that only comes from putting in serious time on the water with clients who are paying to catch fish. Bait over lures. Pan-fried snapper. No fuss. Connor's a manwho knows what works. 🎧 Listen on Spotify &Apple Podcasts | Watch on YouTube β€” Search Get The Net βœ… Connor Scott @new_zealand_outdoors βœ… www.youtube.com Β  ⏱️ Chapters /Segments πŸ“ SHOW NOTES / CHAPTERBREAKDOWN (00:00) Meet Connor Career skipper out of West Haven, grewup fishing with his dad from the rocks at a place they called Broken AnklePoint. Cast Until It Hurts - Trophy Kings Off the Rocks | Gene Bryant, Strictly Landbased
2026/05/11
Gene Bryant is New Zealand's only land-based fishing charter skipper β€” a Whitianga local who grew up watching his dad pioneer the land-based scene in the early '90s, and never looked back. Gene runs Strictly Land Based, taking clients to the remote rocks and ledges that most fishermen only dream about, chasing trophy snapper and kingfish with stickbaits and topwater lures off the kind of coastline that'll make your knees shake. In this episode, Nick and Gene dive deep into what it actually takes to fish off the rocks β€” the big walk-ins with a pack full of gear, the boat runs to spots you can't reach any other way, and why casting when you're tired is exactly when the fish show up. Gene shares the tactics behind reading structure, rigging for kingy and snapper off the rocks, and why topwater will always be his first love. Then there's the stories. A 20kg kingy on the second cast. A yellowfin tuna that went absolutely ballistic just around the corner from Whitianga. Six trips chasing GTs in Rarotonga β€” and one fish lost to the coral that still haunts him. Gene also brings out his dad's old fishing DVDs from the late '90s, proof of a land-based legacy that's been passed down through the generations β€” and is now being handed on to his own kids. A land-based marlin is still on the bucket list β€” and when it happens, he'll be back. βœ…Gene Bryant @strictlylandbased (IG) βœ…YouTube Β @strictlylandbased123Β  βœ… Book a chater +64224778157 (00:00) [The Land-Based Legacy] Gene's dad pioneered it in the '90s β€” DVDs, sponsors, and all.
