NARRATION
ENGLISH:
Welcome to your first onsen lesson. Imagine you've arrived at a Japanese hot spring, but you're not sure what to do. Let's learn three phrases for asking for help.
ENGLISH:
First, tell the staff: "This is my first time at an onsen." Listen.
JAPANESE:
温泉は初めてです。
ENGLISH:
The part meaning "first time" is:
JAPANESE:
初めて。
ENGLISH:
Now listen to the full sentence again and repeat.
JAPANESE:
温泉は初めてです。[long pause]
ENGLISH:
Next, ask: "What should I do?"
JAPANESE:
どうすればいいですか。
ENGLISH:
Learn this as one complete question. You don't need to work out the grammar today. Use it whenever you are unsure what to do next. Listen and repeat.
JAPANESE:
どうすればいいですか。[long pause]
ENGLISH:
Our third phrase means "Please tell me" or "Please explain." Use it when you need someone to explain what to do.
JAPANESE:
教えてください。
ENGLISH:
Listen again and repeat.
JAPANESE:
教えてください。[long pause]
ENGLISH:
Now combine two phrases: "This is my first time at an onsen. Please explain." Listen, then try saying both.
JAPANESE:
温泉は初めてです。教えてください。[long pause]
ENGLISH:
Time to practice without repeating first. Use the pause to answer out loud, before you hear the model. How do you say, "This is my first time at an onsen"? Your turn.[long pause]
JAPANESE:
温泉は初めてです。
ENGLISH:
Now ask, "What should I do?"[long pause]
JAPANESE:
どうすればいいですか。
ENGLISH:
And how do you say, "Please explain"?[long pause]
JAPANESE:
教えてください。
ENGLISH:
Let's put you at reception. You're the guest. Tell the staff this is your first time, then ask what you should do. Try both sentences now.[long pause]
JAPANESE:
温泉は初めてです。どうすればいいですか。
ENGLISH:
The staff member replies:
JAPANESE:
はい。こちらへどうぞ。
ENGLISH:
That means, "Yes. This way, please." You have asked for help and can follow the staff member. For now, just recognize this reply; our three phrases are the main goal.
ENGLISH:
One final challenge. Say, "This is my first time at an onsen. Please explain."[long pause]
JAPANESE:
温泉は初めてです。教えてください。
ENGLISH:
Well done. You don't need perfect Japanese to ask for help. Take these three phrases with you to your first onsen.
