Report Writing Without Losing Your Mind (Or Your Weekends)
2026/10/18
I know I've talked about this before — here we go again. I miss comments. I really do. Now we've got "evidences of learning," and honestly, I think they're harder to write than comments ever were, and most parents don't actually understand them. So we end up spending more time explaining the format at interviews than talking about the whole child.
In this episode: an honest take on why the new format feels harder (and why that's allowed to be true), the one genuine silver lining in schools leaving reports until later — it keeps the older kids giving right up until the time's actually up — and real, practical ways to get through it without it eating every weekend between now and the due date.
Data first. Voice-to-text wherever the format still allows it. A language bank so you're not reinventing every sentence. Batching by section instead of by student. And protected windows that don't bleed into every spare hour you have.
You don't have to love the format to get good at working with it. 🤍
Setting Boundaries When Everyone Wants a Piece of You Before the Year Ends
2026/10/11
Right now, everyone wants a piece of you. Work wants you at the meeting, the rehearsal, the working bee. And your actual life wants you too — the drinks, the catch-ups, the "we haven't seen you in ages" invites that seem to triple in November and December. Both are pulling at you the exact moment you have the least capacity to give.
In this episode: why you are not rewarded for the badge of exhaustion, why you don't need to attend every single event — work or personal — and why protecting a genuinely empty weekend, or even just a few unclaimed hours, isn't indulgent, it's maintenance.
Because if you run yourself into the ground for the next few weeks, the break doesn't start with rest. It starts with your body finally collapsing — and nobody wants to spend the whole school holiday sick.
Plus, a few real ways to actually say no, without the guilt trip or the three-paragraph justification.
You're allowed to protect your time. Saying no to some things this term might be exactly what lets you say a genuine, present yes to what matters most. 🤍
Why Term 4 Is the Hardest Term (And How to Survive It)
2026/10/04
Term 4 isn't just "one more term." It's the one where everything lands at once — reports, parent meetings, learning plans, swimming lessons eating your timetable, Christmas concerts, craft, class parties, transition days, next year's class lists. All of it landing on top of your actual teaching, which doesn't pause to let you catch up.
If you're already wondering how you'll make it to December in one piece — you're not overreacting. This term genuinely asks more of you.
In this episode I walk through how to get on top of it: mapping every fixed date first, backward planning from each one, deliberately protecting the time that swimming and Christmas activities quietly swallow, and building in slack — because Term 4 will not respect your plan perfectly, and that's not you failing. The plan is a guide, not a contract.
But I also want you to hear the other half. This is the last term you will ever have with this exact class, in these exact moments. Not next term — there is no next term with them. So look up. Notice them. Cherish it, even while you're exhausted. Especially while you're exhausted.
One backward-planned, joy-noticing week at a time. You've got this. 🤍
Things I 💖 about teaching
2026/09/20
We've been heavy lately — burnout, workload, all the stuff that's broken. And that conversation matters. But we're heading into the run to the end of the year, and I don't want the hard stuff to be the only thing we talk about.
So in this episode, I'm naming what's good. Not fake, forced positivity — a real look at why we're still here.
I walk through 24 things I genuinely love about this job: the little wins nobody else would clock as a big deal, the lightbulb moments, the staffroom, the teacher friends who get it without explanation. And the big one for me — making a difference, and helping kids believe that they're strong, that they matter, that they don't have to follow in anyone's footsteps but their own.
There's a reflection prompt with every single one, so this isn't just a list to listen to. It's an invitation to work out your own.
Because as the quote goes: "I don't love everything about teaching. I love teaching."
Have a listen, then pick one thing you love and tell someone. Say it in the staffroom tomorrow. Text a teacher friend. Let's not let the hard stuff be the only thing we talk about this term. 🤍
Comparison Is the Thief of Staffroom Joy
2026/09/13
So many teachers are measuring their day one against someone else's day one thousand — and it's not a fair fight. Mel talks through what comparison actually costs you, how it shows up in the staffroom and on teacher Instagram/TikTok, and one small mindset shift to help you run your own race instead of someone else's highlight reel.

What Your Body Is Telling You — 10 Ways Back to Balance
2026/09/06
Burnout doesn't send an email — it shows up in your shoulders, your sleep, and your patience long before your brain admits anything's wrong. This episode covers how to actually read your body's stress signals, a simple breathing technique you can use mid-lesson, small (unglamorous) self-care that actually works, and 10 practical, doable ways to find your way back to balance — plus a reminder that asking for real support is never a failure.

1 in 4 Trillion — Why Every Kid (and You) Is a Miracle
2026/08/30
There was roughly a 1 in 4 trillion chance you'd exist exactly as you are — and the same goes for every kid in your classroom. In this episode, today I unpack ideas from Infinite Receiving by Suzy Ashworth on choosing how we interpret the world around us, why "I love you, I don't love your behaviour" might be the most powerful phrase a teacher can carry, and why choosing empathy over anger changes everything — for your students, and for you.
Listen in and don't forget to share this with those who need to hear it.

🎙️ What No One Tells You About Leadership
2026/08/23
🎙️ What No One Tells You About Leadership
Leadership can be incredibly rewarding... but it can also be incredibly lonely.
People often see the title, the responsibility, or the opportunities. What they don't always see are the difficult conversations, the constant decision-making, the weight of supporting everyone else, and the pressure of trying to do the right thing—even when there isn't a perfect answer.
In this episode, I'm sharing the side of leadership that doesn't get talked about enough.
The self-doubt.The emotional load. The balancing act of supporting your team while managing your own wellbeing. The moments where you question yourself. And yes... the loneliness that can come with being the person others turn to.
If you're a teacher leader, aspiring leader, or anyone in a role where you're carrying responsibility for others, I hope this conversation reminds you that you're not the only one who has felt this way.
Leadership isn't about having all the answers. It's about showing up, learning, growing, and leading with heart—even when it's hard.

Co-Regulation Before Correction 👩🏼🏫
2026/08/16
🎙️ Co-Regulation Before Correction
What if the behaviour you're trying to correct isn't the real problem?
As teachers, it's easy to jump straight to correcting behaviour—but when a child is dysregulated, they're often not in a place where they can learn from correction.
In this episode, we're talking about why connection comes before correction and how co-regulation can completely change the way we respond to challenging behaviours.
I'll share practical strategies inspired by occupational therapists, trauma-informed practice, and the simple things I've used in my own classroom that have genuinely made a difference.
These aren't complicated interventions. They're realistic, easy-to-implement ideas that help children feel safe, regulated, and ready to learn.
Whether you're a teacher, parent, education assistant, or someone who works with children, I hope you walk away with a few practical tools you can start using straight away.
🎧 Listen and let me know which strategy you're excited to try!

For the Teacher who is Not OK! 💖
2026/08/09
💛 This episode is for the teacher who's carrying more than anyone knows.
The teacher who has just lost someone they love...The one navigating heartbreak, grief, illness, family struggles, or challenges at home...The one who still walks through the school gates, puts on a smile, and gives everything they have to their students.
Because the truth is, teachers are human too.
In this episode, I share one of the hardest times in my teaching career—returning to work after losing my Oma. I talk about what it was really like trying to teach while carrying such a heavy heart, and why we need to remember that every teacher has a life beyond the classroom.
Sometimes the teacher standing in front of the class is carrying more than anyone could ever see.
If you've ever had to keep showing up while your world was falling apart, I hope this episode reminds you that you're not alone. And if you've never experienced that, I hope it offers a glimpse into the invisible weight so many educators carry every single day.

🎙️The REAL job description 👩🏼🏫
2026/07/26
🎙️ People often think teaching is just about lesson plans, marking, and school holidays... but that's only a tiny part of the story.
In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on what teaching is really about. The job description that never makes it into the official paperwork.
It's the emotional load. The constant decision-making.The relationships. The behaviour support. The endless juggling. The moments no one sees.
If you've ever felt like you're doing so much more than "just teaching," this episode is for you. I hope it leaves you feeling seen, understood, and reminded that the work you do every day truly matters.
🎧 Listen now wherever you get your podcasts, and if it resonates, I'd love for you to share it with another teacher who needs to hear they're not alone. 💛

If You're Thinking About Quitting Teaching, Listen to This 🫶🏼
2026/07/19
This episode is one of the most personal I've recorded.
There was a time when I was exhausted, overwhelmed, and questioning whether I could keep going. I came incredibly close to leaving the profession I once loved.
If you've ever sat in your car before work, cried on the way home, counted down the days until the holidays, or wondered if teaching is still for you... this episode is for you.
I'm sharing what was really happening behind the scenes, what helped me find my way back, and the small shifts that made a huge difference.
You don't have to make a life-changing decision from a place of burnout.
Whether you're ready to rediscover your love of teaching or simply need someone who gets it, I hope this episode reminds you that you're not alone.
💙 Press play, take a deep breath, and let's work through this together.

Reclaiming Identity Outside of the Classroom 📚
2026/07/12
For so long, I was just "the teacher" and "the mum." Everything else got pushed aside. 💭
This week I'm talking about how I slowly lost touch with who I actually am outside of those two roles — and the small, messy, imperfect steps I'm taking to get her back.
This one's for every teacher, every mum, every woman who has poured so much into everyone else that she forgot to ask herself what she needs.
We talk about:✔️ The guilt that keeps us stuck putting ourselves last✔️ Why passion and identity aren't the same thing✔️ Learning to say no (and actually meaning it)✔️ Asking for help without it feeling like failure✔️ Why rest isn't a reward you earn — it's maintenance
I'm not coming at this as someone who's figured it all out. I'm still that woman who does too much. But I'm learning, one small step at a time — and I think that's worth talking about. 💕

2026/07/05

If you've ever replayed a parent conversation in your head all night, this episode is for you.
🎧 Listen now and remember: you don't have to please everyone to be a great teacher.
