Ep. 32 - Aladdin: The Diamond in the Rough and the Genie Behind It
2026/10/14
Before Robin Williams ever burst out of the lamp, there was the original tale of Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp. In this episode of Magic and Myth, host Jennifer is joined by a very special first-time guest, her husband Kevin, to dig into one of the all-time greats, the 1992 classic Aladdin. Jennifer traces its surprising roots in A Thousand and One Nights, the "orphan tale" that was never part of the original collection, the Syrian storyteller who may have given it to the world, and a far stranger, darker version of the story than the one you grew up with. Kevin brings a thoughtful spiritual lens to it all, an analogy about wanting, letting go, and what it really means to set the genie free.
From there the three of them get into the good stuff: the wild road the film took to get made, the casting that almost went very differently, the handful of songs that somehow carry the whole thing, and a loving tribute to Robin Williams and the quiet ways he showed up for people off screen.
Whether Aladdin is your all-time favorite or you just cannot stop singing "Friend Like Me," this is a warm, funny, and surprisingly deep trip to Agrabah.

Ep. 31 - Beauty and the Beast: The Ancient Myth Beneath Jennifer's Favorite Disney Movie
2026/09/30
Travel back to the ancient myth of Cupid and Psyche, a tale of a mysterious unseen husband, impossible trials, and a journey to the Underworld, then forward to the original 1700s fairy tale, complete with an enchantress, a curse, and a plot far stranger than the movie lets on. Dig into the real historical figure whose life may have helped inspire the legend of a gentle soul trapped in a beastly form. Before Belle ever wandered into an enchanted castle, this story was thousands of years in the making.
In this episode of Magic and Myth, host Jennifer finally gets to her all-time favorite Disney film, the 1991 classic Beauty and the Beast, and she brought a very special guest to share it: her daughter Emma.
From there it is all the good stuff: the clever animation tricks that made teapots and candelabras feel alive, the songs old and new (yes, they get into Evermore and Dan Stevens), how the live-action remake holds up, and a fun detour into why you will never catch a costumed guest wandering the Disney parks. Whether Beauty and the Beast is your favorite too or you just cannot resist singing along to "Be Our Guest," this is a warm, nostalgic deep dive into a tale as old as time.
Ep. 30 - The Rescuers Down Under: The Real Outback Behind Disney's First Sequel
2026/09/16
Dig into the wild history behind the movie backdrop: the massive Dingo Fence that stretches thousands of miles across the continent, the real animals that inspired Marahute and friends, and just how much the movie bent the truth about eagles and albatrosses for the sake of a good flight scene. Before Bernard and Bianca ever set off across the outback, there was the real Australia. In this episode of Magic and Myth, host Jennifer soars into a childhood favorite and a genuine Disney milestone, the 1990 adventure The Rescuers Down Under, the studio's very first theatrical sequel.
From there it is all the moviemaking magic: how this was the film that quietly changed Disney animation forever, the technology that bridged the hand-drawn era and the Pixar age, the wild double feature it shared its opening day with, and a few tangents about growing up with a lot more freedom than kids get today.
Whether The Rescuers Down Under was on repeat in your house or you are just here for the deep dives, this is a soaring trip to the outback.
Ep. 29 - DuckTales: Treasure of the Lost Lamp and the Tales That Inspired It
2026/09/02
Treasure-hunting, lamp-rubbing adventure gets traced back to its real roots in One Thousand and One Nights, the sprawling collection of Middle Eastern folk tales, and the surprising history of how stories like Aladdin and Ali Baba came to be attached to it in the first place.
Along the way she retells the tale of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves in full, complete with hidden caves, a certain famous password, and the clever servant who outsmarts them all. In this episode of Magic and Myth, host Jennifer dives into a childhood staple, the 1990 film DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp. Before Scrooge McDuck ever went chasing genies and gold, the story was borrowing from something far older.
Whether DuckTales was appointment viewing in your house or you just cannot read the title without singing "woo-oo," this is a nostalgic, myth-filled trip back to Duckburg.
Ep. 28 - The Little Mermaid: How a Grim Danish Tale Became a Disney Classic
2026/08/19
Before Ariel ever sang a note, there were sirens on the rocks. In this episode of Magic and Myth, host Jennifer is joined by special guest Dee Dee to dive into the 1989 classic that kicked off the Disney Renaissance, The Little Mermaid.
Jennifer traces the myth beneath the movie, from the German legend of the Lorelei, the heartbroken woman whose song lured sailors to their doom, to Hans Christian Andersen's original fairy tale, a far darker story of a mermaid whose every step feels like knives, a prince who marries someone else, and an ending that comes, as T.S. Eliot put it, not with a bang but a whimper.
From there they surface for the fun stuff: the wild casting saga behind Ursula, the real-life inspirations that shaped Ariel, why "Under the Sea" earned its Academy Award, and the changes in the 2023 live-action remake that left them scratching their heads.
Whether The Little Mermaid was your first movie in the theater or you are just here for the dark side and the whimsy, this is a deep, funny, and surprisingly grim dive beneath the waves.
Ep. 27 - Oliver & Company: The Real Oliver Twist and Dickens' Dark London
2026/08/05
Dig into the darker real history behind the story, from Dickens' own difficult childhood to the grim world of Victorian workhouses and the real-life inspirations that may sit behind the tale of Oliver. In this episode of Disney Junkie: Magic and Myth, Jennifer and her producer Brennon explore the 1988 Disney classic Oliver & Company, the studio's jazzy, streetwise take on Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. Along the way, she and Brennon connect that history to the world we live in today. They also have fun with the movie itself, from its star-studded voice cast to its place in Disney history and why it remains one of the studio's most overlooked films. Whether you grew up with Oliver or have never seen it, this episode offers a fresh look at the story and the history behind it.
Ep. 26 - The Brave Little Toaster: Consumerism, Abandonment, and Pixar’s Hidden Origin
2026/07/15
The Brave Little Toaster isn’t technically a Disney movie… but it almost was. In this episode of Disney Junkie: Magic and Myth, Jennifer and Producer Brennon explore the fascinating history behind one of the most beloved cult animated films of the 1980s.
They dive into the life of author Thomas Disch, whose story challenged consumerism, identity, and the fear of being forgotten. Along the way, they discuss why audiences empathize so deeply with inanimate objects, whether Disney preserves classic stories or replaces them, and why darker children’s films continue to resonate decades later.
The episode also uncovers one of animation’s greatest “what if” stories: how The Brave Little Toaster was originally developed at Disney, how John Lasseter’s ambitious vision for the film ultimately led to his departure from the studio, and how that path eventually resulted in Pixar and Toy Story. It’s a remarkable look at the movie that quietly helped shape the future of animation, even if it never officially became part of Disney’s animated canon.
Ep. 25 - The Great Mouse Detective: Sherlock Holmes, Vincent Price, and Disney’s Great Comeback
2026/07/01
From the fascinating life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the enduring legacy of Sherlock Holmes to the creation of Basil of Baker Street, Ratigan, and Disney’s mouse-sized version of Victorian London, uncover the real-world history and literary inspiration behind the film. After the commercial disappointment of The Black Cauldron, Disney needed a win, and The Great Mouse Detective delivered. In this episode of Disney Junkie: Magic and Myth, Jennifer and Brennon explore the surprising history behind the animated adventure that helped revive Disney Animation while introducing audiences to one of its most memorable villains.
They also discuss Vincent Price’s unforgettable performance as Ratigan, the groundbreaking use of computer animation in the iconic clock tower finale, the film’s troubled development, and how it quietly paved the way for Disney’s Renaissance.
Whether you grew up wearing out your VHS copy or are discovering Basil and Dawson for the first time, this episode celebrates the mystery, adventure, and remarkable comeback story behind one of Disney’s most underrated animated classics.
Bonus Episode - Keith Coogan on Fox and the Hound, Adventures in Babysitting, and Growing Up in Hollywood
2026/06/26
In this special bonus episode of Disney Junkie, Jennifer sits down with actor Keith Coogan, the voice of young Tod in The Fox and the Hound and star of beloved classics including Adventures in Babysitting, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, Toy Soldiers, and more.
Keith shares stories from his remarkable career as a child actor, recording for Disney Animation, working with director Chris Columbus, filming Adventures in Babysitting, and the legacy of his grandfather, Jackie Coogan, whose experience led to the creation of the Coogan Law protecting child performers. Along the way, he reflects on Hollywood in the ’70s, ’80s, and ‘90s, the realities of growing up in the entertainment industry, and why The Fox and the Hound remains one of Disney’s most enduring animated classics.
Whether you know Keith as Tod, Brad, Kenny, or from one of his many other film and television roles, this conversation is packed with behind-the-scenes stories, Hollywood history, and plenty of nostalgia.

Ep. 24 – The Black Cauldron: Welsh Legends, Dark Fantasy, and Disney’s Forgotten Epic
2026/06/17
Explore the Four Branches of the Mabinogi, the legendary tales that inspired the film’s magical cauldrons, enchanted pigs, powerful sorcerers, and the terrifying Horned King. In this episode of Disney Junkie: Magic and Myth, Jennifer and Producer Brennon venture into one of Disney’s most ambitious and misunderstood films: The Black Cauldron. Often remembered as Disney’s darkest animated feature, the 1985 fantasy adventure draws heavily from Welsh mythology, ancient folklore, and Lloyd Alexander’s beloved Chronicles of Prydain series.
Along the way, we discuss the movie’s surprising connections to The Lord of the Rings, The Legend of Zelda, and other fantasy stories that followed.
Whether you’re a longtime fan or discovering The Black Cauldron for the first time, this episode uncovers the myths, history, and hidden legacy behind one of Disney’s most fascinating cult classics.
Ep. 23 – The Fox and the Hound: The Real Hunting Culture Behind Disney’s Classic
2026/06/03
Explore the unlikely friendship between Tod and Copper, the emotional themes that have made the film a favorite for generations, and the real-world hunting culture that serves as the backdrop for the story.
This week on Disney Junkie: Magic and Myth, Jennifer revisits Disney’s 1981 classic The Fox and the Hound and is joined by special guest Donaye Smith of 4T’s Gun Dogs.
The conversation dives into the life of author Daniel P. Mannix, the origins of his novel, and how Disney transformed a much darker story into a heartfelt tale about friendship, identity, and growing up. Donaye also shares insights from his experience training hunting and working dogs, offering a unique perspective on the film’s portrayal of the bond between people and animals.
Whether you remember The Fox and the Hound as a childhood tearjerker or are revisiting it with fresh eyes, this episode explores why one of Disney’s most emotional films continues to resonate with audiences more than four decades later.

Ep. 22 - Pete’s Dragon: Trauma, Imagination, and Disney’s Weirdest Dragon
2026/05/20
Trauma, imagination, attachment, and the emotional role fantasy can play in childhood. What starts as a whimsical story about an orphan boy and his invisible dragon quickly turns into a much deeper conversation. In this episode of Disney Junkie: Magic and Myth, Jennifer is joined once again by Ashley Mayfield and producer Brennon for a deep dive into Disney’s 1977 live-action and animation hybrid, Pete’s Dragon.
Together, the group explores the complicated relationship between Pete and Elliot, the film’s themes of abuse and emotional survival, and how imaginary companions can function as coping mechanisms for children navigating unstable environments. Ashley brings in perspectives from attachment theory and Internal Family Systems, connecting the film’s magical elements to real-world emotional healing and trauma responses.
The episode also dives into the surprisingly dark real-world inspirations surrounding child exploitation and adoption scandals in early 20th-century America, while unpacking the behind-the-scenes Disney history that shaped the production itself. From Don Bluth’s frustrations with Disney management to the evolution of Elliot’s design and the changing expectations audiences place on storytelling, this conversation uncovers why Pete’s Dragon is far stranger, heavier, and more fascinating than many people remember.
Ep. 21 - The Rescuers: Grit, Trauma, and the Post-Walt Turning Point
2026/05/06
From Norwegian poets and prison rescues to Disney’s simplified, emotionally-driven narrative, the evolution of this story reveals a studio searching for its identity in the years after Walt Disney’s passing. Along the way, we dive into the film’s long and complicated development history, early abandoned concepts, and the creative decisions that ultimately shaped its final form.
In this episode of Disney Junkie: Magic and Myth, Jennifer takes a deeper look at Disney’s 1977 film The Rescuers—a movie that marked a major shift for the studio in both tone and storytelling. Set in a more contemporary world, this film trades fairy tale castles for gritty cityscapes and bayou swamps, following Bernard and Bianca as they attempt to rescue a kidnapped orphan named Penny.
Jennifer explores how loosely the film pulls from Margery Sharp’s original book series, breaking down just how different the source material really is.
But this episode doesn’t stop at animation history. Jennifer also unpacks the darker real-world themes behind the film—child abandonment, orphan systems, and the uncomfortable reality that stories like Penny’s weren’t purely fictional. The result is a conversation that highlights The Rescuers as more than just an under-the-radar Disney film. It’s a turning point—one that reflects a changing world, a changing studio, and a willingness to explore more grounded, emotional storytelling.
Ep. 20 – Winnie the Pooh: The Real Bear, Childhood Wonder, and the Legacy Behind the Hundred Acre Wood
2026/04/22
What seems like a simple story about friendship, honey, and imagination reveals surprisingly rich roots in real history and the lasting power of nostalgia.
In this episode of Disney Junkie: Magic and Myth, host Jennifer Miller takes a closer look at Winnie the Pooh, one of Disney’s most comforting and beloved classics.
Jennifer explores the true story of Winnie, the black bear cub who inspired the character after becoming a favorite attraction at the London Zoo during World War I. She also dives into how author A.A. Milne turned his son Christopher Robin’s toys into a global phenomenon—and how that fame complicated the real Christopher Robin’s life as he grew older.
The episode also revisits Disney’s The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, celebrating its gentle storytelling, unforgettable songs, and timeless charm. From the psychology of the characters to the deeper emotions hidden inside the Hundred Acre Wood, this episode shows why Pooh’s smallest adventures still resonate generations later.
Ep. 19 – Robin Hood: The Legend, the Lore, and Disney’s Most Charming Outlaw
2026/04/08
Charm, humor, and one of the most enduring legends in storytelling history. In this episode of Disney Junkie: Magic and Myth, we head into Sherwood Forest to unpack Disney’s 1973 animated classic Robin Hood.
Host Jennifer Miller is joined by special guest Christine Gaskill, a librarian, fantasy enthusiast, and longtime fan of the film, as they revisit what makes this version of Robin Hood so memorable. From the unforgettable music (yes, “Oo-De-Lally”) to the lovable cast of animal characters, this episode leans into the nostalgia that made the film a childhood favorite—and why it still holds up today.
But beyond the Disney magic, the conversation digs into the deeper origins of Robin Hood himself. Where did this legendary outlaw come from? Was he ever a real person? Jennifer explores the evolution of Robin Hood across centuries—from violent medieval bandit to noble hero of the people—and how each retelling reshaped his story to reflect the values of the time.
Part nostalgic comfort, part historical deep dive, and part celebration of one of Disney’s most rewatchable classics, this episode reminds us why Robin Hood remains the ultimate outlaw with a heart of gold.
