Episode 20: Loser Babies and The Last Temptation of Beck
2026/10/07
Josie's new book, The Last Temptation of Beck, just dropped! And she also produced an album to accompany it filled with original songs inspired by the book's narrative, Loser Babies! So we're putting X-Men on the back burner today and focusing on this exciting news. Josie and Becca are joined by writer and musician Rachel Garrett Steele, who has two tracks on the album, to talk about being perdedoras. Or, more specifically, to go through the entire album track-by-track, discussing songwriting, Beck, and what it means for marginalized people to make art together. How has art brought these three friends together? Plus, Becca desperately tries to bring up Mr. Sinister occasionally so you don't forget that this podcast is sometimes about X-Men.

Episode 19: Avengers Doomsday Trailer
2026/07/21
X-Men emergency! The X-Men are in the trailer for Avengers Doomsday and everybody keeps talking about it on BlueSky. What's worse: Josie isn't around to complain about it! Becca couldn't sit idly by and be angry in peace, so she fired up the time platform and summoned fan-favorite returning guest Doc, back from the Dust episode! Join Becca and Doc as they discuss the struggles of adapting Dr. Doom into other media, what's left to say about Magneto, and whatever is going on with famous actress "Other Rebecca." And now hopefully we never need to talk about this cursed cinematic universe again.

Episode 18: X-Men 97: Season 1
2026/07/01
What, you were expecting black leather? Josie and Becca marathoned the first season of X-Men 97 to prep for July's launch of Season 2, and they had a wild ride, sugah! They're joined by Pop Heist's Brett White to discuss the ins and outs of the show, especially how it integrates Grant Morrison's writing to the world of the 90s. What happens when you remix storylines in new and weird ways? How can you discuss genocide and trauma in a show that aired on Disney Plus? How does Wolverine sound to the completely uninformed? And of course...we learn a bit about what Black Francis was singing about. Listen and get ready for Season 2!

Episode 17: X-Men: Mad Avenue
2026/06/24
Chances are, you haven't heard of X-Men: Mad Avenue, but that changes today. Becca and Josie are pleased to welcome Riley Thomas to the podcast to talk about the X-Men musical he created! X-Men Mad Avenue is a new musical designed to be performed in schools, and Josie and Becca love talking about X-Men, theater, and schools, so this had to happen. Why does the X-Men work so well as a musical? What are the benefits of teaching the X-Men in schools? And what happens when you commit to race-blind and gender-blind casting in theater? Children are the future, and here comes tomorrow!
Plus: Check out the soundtrack to X-Men: Mad Avenue!

Episode 15: Here Comes Tomorrow (New X-Men 151-154)
2026/01/28
Look, we're all living in a badly-wounded orphan universe, so strap in and get ready for some Phoenix Work. Josie and Becca are back from their holiday time-skip with the final arc of Grant Morrison's New X-Men run, the eponymous Here Comes Tomorrow! The girls explore this unfortunately-relevant arc, full of hope in the face of Sublime's fascist takeover. How do the struggles of Tom Skylark and company teach us about avoiding "doomerism" and staying hopeful? You're not going to want to miss this episode!

Episode 14: Planet X (feat. Asher Elbein) (New X-Men 146-150)
2025/11/19
Magneto is back? Xorn isn't real??? You better believe it, kids! It's a scary new world in New York City, but luckily, Josie and Becca are joined by a real Magneto expert: writer Asher Elbein! This is an important X-Men run that redefined what Magneto could be, for good or for ill, and that means the girls have a lot to talk about. You won't want to miss our SEASON 1 FINALE: and yes, there will be a Season 2 where we WILL get to Here Comes Tomorrow.

Episode 13: Assault on Weapon Plus (feat. Tegan O'Neil) (New X-Men 142-145)
2025/11/12
We're entering the home stretch of New X-Men and things are getting intense. This week, Josie and Becca break into The World as they launch an Assault on Weapon Plus. Luckily, they're joined by longtime comics critic, Josie's good friend Tegan O'Neil, who is here to guide our girls through the perilous journey. Did this comic change Wolverine forever, or is nothing that permanent in the world of Marvel? How does this arc serve as a foil to "Dust?" And of course, it wouldn't be Here Comes Tomorrow if Becca didn't make this about being transgender!

Episode 12: Murder at the Mansion (feat. Evan Narcisse) (New X-Men 139-141)
2025/11/05
It's time for Grant Morrison to ask "whodunnit?" and your hosts to ask "why do we care?" That's right, it's Morrison's cooldown arc from the past few heavy-hitting storylines, Murder at the Mansion! But don't skip this one, listeners, because Josie and Becca are joined by an incredible guest: Marvel comics writer Evan Narcisse! Evan joins the girls to discuss this Bishop-centered story, as well as race and representation in media as a whole. How does this story show us about Grant's views on societal norms, even while trying to return the book to status quo? The real mystery is why you haven't downloaded this episode already!

Episode 11: Riot at Xavier's (feat. Jay Edidin) (New X-Men 134-138)
2025/10/29
New X-Men is a comic about the new vs. the old, and Riot at Xavier's is that theme at its most relevant. Which is why Josie and Becca needed a very special guest: Jay Edidin of Jay and Miles X-Plain the X-Men! That's right, it's the crossover you've all been waiting for! There's so much to discuss about political and cultural frustrations as we discuss the rise and fall of the other New X-Men. And of course, you can't podcast with three trans people, two of whom did Quentin Quire cosplays, without getting into some deep thoughts on gender. Plus, Beast's sexuality gets addressed once again!
Content Warnings: Discussions of fascism, transphobia, school shootings

Episode 10: Dust (feat. Doc) (New X-Men 133)
2025/10/22
It's time for Josie and Becca to wade into the most infamous New X-Men issue of all: Dust, 2002's post-9/11 Islamophobia whirlwind tour. So yeah, first of all, check the content warnings for this one. But secondly, and more excitingly, the girls are joined by Doc, a friend of Becca's from her Fantastic 4 blogging days. Doc is a Palestinian hijabi with a literal doctorate in medicine and a figurative doctorate in Dr. Doom, and she comes prepared with thoughts about what Dust says about the world after 2001. And she also has a bone to pick with Grant Morrison. But don't worry, there's also an exciting reveal about whether Dr. Doom is transphobic, so it all works out in the end, I guess. Girlies and queerdos alike don't want to miss this one, I promise.
Content Warnings: Discussions of Islamophobia, racism, 9/11, terrorism, rape, human trafficking, Comicsgate, transphobia, fascism

Episode 9: Ambient Magnet Fields (feat. Alana M. Vincent) (New X-Men 132)
2025/10/15
By this point in New X-Men, it's been one year since Cassandra Nova attacked Genosha, and more importantly, one year since the real-world attacks on September 11. So it comes as no surprise that Marvel and Grant Morisson released a comic on September 11, 2002 grappling with both of those anniversaries. Josie and Becca are joined by Professor Alana M. Vincent, an expert in genocide remembrance and author of the upcoming, tentatively-titled book Magneto Was Right, to discuss this serious storyline. There's a lot of content warnings in this one, folks, but we sincerely hope you'll join us for a thoughtful conversation about genocides and atrocities of all kinds. And also, y'know, whether Logan is hot. We talk about that too.
Content Warning: Discussions of genocide, the September 11 attacks, the Holocaust, Israel-Palestine conflicts throughout history, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, apartheid, racism, fascism, transphobia

Episode 8: Some Angels Falling (feat. Stephanie Burt) (New X-Men 131)
2025/10/08
World-famous, attractive, tall, and unquestionably the problem, hi, the problem, it's them...Am I talking about Taylor Swift or Scott Summers? Who can tell? This week, Josie and Becca are talking about New X-Men's new romantics in an extra-long discussion of "Some Angels Falling" with Stephanie Burt, Harvard poetry professor and author of the upcoming Taylor's Version. I mean, we get to that issue eventually, but first, a lot of asides about our favorite character who doesn't appear in this book, Kitty Pryde. At teatime, everybody agrees: you don't want to miss this one! (Anyway please note we recorded this long before the release of Life of a Showgirl.)
Content Warning: Discussions of racism

Anyway! Josie and Becca are joined in their intercontinental journey by French comic fan Charlotte Fierro from My Marvelous Year. I'm sorry for my bad French, Charlotte. 2025/09/24
The only constants in life are death, taxes, and Xorn, so it's time for us to meet up once again with the man in the iron mask for this one-shot Xorn story! Josie and Becca are joined by journalist Rui Zhong to discuss Xorn's backstory, whether Xorn's backstory exists at all, and what the tragedy of Mutant Town has to say about subcultures and ethnic enclaves. Are we confused by this issue's writing but in love with its fantastic art? You know it! Plus: a lot of Fantastic 4 talk!

I don’t get it
I listened to the episodes so far and I have to say: I don’t get it. The episodes are just meandering, not particularly thoughtful chat about a belove...
Dasbender 2025/08/20
Can’t wait for next episode.
Josie and Becca bring a lot of context and perspective to their discussion. There’s a lot more here than your average comics review podcast.
