Description

Faith isn't always black and white. We're a married couple having honest conversations about the beautiful, messy middle of Latter-day Saint life where doubt and devotion coexist, questions lead to deeper understanding, and everyone belongs. Join us as we dive into questions about culture and theology in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  We don't have all of the answers, and yet, we believe. We record these episodes live on Instagram each week. Follow us (Anne) @the.vision.beautiful and (Roger) @from.the.overflow for details and more Latter-day Saint content.

78. Tithing: A Deep Dive
2026/10/22
Most of us learned tithing as a deal: pay ten percent, and God opens the windows of heaven. For a lot of faithful people, the windows have stayed shut. Some of our friends now wince at tithing for other reasons, like where the money goes, or the feeling that a temple recommend has a price tag. We're not here to tell anyone to pay, not pay, or pay a certain way. We want to open the topic up, look at where tithing came from, and ask what it was ever meant to do.
77. Behind the Name: What "And Yet, We Believe" Means
2026/10/14
In this episode we explain the name of our podcast: what belief means to us, what the “and yet” is for, and how we hold space when faith feels hard. If you’re struggling right now, this one is for you.
76. Universalism vs. Meritocracy: Who Gets Saved, Anyway?
2026/10/09
A lot of us grew up with a scoreboard gospel: the truly righteous make the celestial kingdom, and everyone else lands in a "lesser glory" that feels like a failure grade. Some of us now see a God whose mercy reaches further than we were taught. But the scriptures and teachings that gave us the scoreboard are still there, still read over the pulpit, and some of them still have a grip on us. How do we hold the paradox of a strict, meritocratic gospel, with a loving God who is in relentless pursuit of each one of us?
75. Living in the Questions
2026/10/01
One of the first things God said to human beings was a question: "Where art thou?" This episode is about why a church that started with a teenager's question in a grove got so nervous about asking them, and what it looks like to live in the questions instead of rushing past them. Jesus asked over 300 questions in the Gospels. We can probably handle a few of our own.
74. The Jell-o Belt: A Field Guide to Mormon Culture
2026/09/23
Is participating in 'Mormon Culture' dependent on our activity level or is it something more? Is there room in the Church for someone who hasn't been to church in years?  In this episode, we’re digging into Jell-O, funeral potatoes, MomTok, and what it actually means to be culturally Mormon.
73. Leaning In to the Mystery of God
2026/09/16
We call God "Father," and mean it. But the picture in our heads—old man, white beard, sitting on a throne—tends to reduce God to something simple, something we can easily understand and explain. But it’s very possible that we can’t even fully comprehend God as mortal humans… and so instead of trying hard to understand something we can’t, we can lean into the mystery of God.
72. Jesus Picked People Over Policy
2026/09/10
There's a pattern hiding in plain sight across the Gospels: every time a rule and a person came into conflict, Jesus picked the person. Every time. We dug into what that pattern says about judgment, enemies, and what it actually means to be 'saved.’ Fair warning: this one might mess with how you think about boundaries.
71. Embracing Stillness, When We’ve Trained Ourselves to Be Busy
2026/09/04
In a faith culture that deeply values service, progress, and consecrated effort, stillness can feel almost suspicious—like we’re not doing enough. This episode reframes stillness as a sacred form of trust: a way of letting God speak, heal, reveal, and transform us beneath all our holy busyness.
70. What Do We Do With Disturbing Stories in Scripture?
2026/08/27
Why does your scripture have beheadings, curses, drowned civilizations, and even a bear mauling, and why did nobody mention that in Sunday School? We're pulling the "weird" and "disturbing" stories out of hiding from all the books of scripture and asking the question underneath them all: what do we actually do with a text that unsettles us? Come for the gore, stay for the theology.
69. Second Hour: What is it Good For?
2026/08/12
What is the second hour actually for? With the new shortened Sunday School, Relief Society, and elders quorum meetings, it’s easy to focus on logistics: transitions, lesson length, announcements, and whether teachers can do anything meaningful in 25 minutes. But maybe the question isn’t whether we can make the lesson fit into the allotted time. Maybe it’s whether anyone is remembered, nourished, relieved, or sent out to love. However it is that we do that.
68. Room for More Than One Kind of Saint
2026/08/05
wo people can grow up in the same church (in the same ward, and even family!) and walk away with completely different memories of what they were taught. And they both can be telling the truth when they share those memories with others. This episode digs into why that's so hard for us to sit with, what our psychology and theology say about it, and why "that's not what I experienced" should never be used as an argument-ender.
67. When You're Just Not Feeling the Spirit
2026/07/23
You pray, and you don’t get a grand, dramatic answer. You get asked about times when you’ve felt the Spirit, and you can’t think of something recent. Does it mean something’s wrong with you? Does it mean you don’t have enough faith? We think the answer is no. Most of life is spent in the in-between times, between the big spiritual moments you can describe. And that in-between isn't the absence of faith. It *is* faith.
66. What the Hell?
2026/07/16
Most of us either grew up with a version of Hell that scared us into behaving, or it wasn't something we fully understood. In this episode, we talk about how Jesus spoke about Hell, what early church leaders taught about it, and what we think about it now. The beauty of the modern revelation of eternal progression in place of eternal damnation is a doctrine of mercy. It is better for all of us to focus on that loving doctrine rather than scaring people into obedience.
65. Loving What Is, and Hoping for What Could Be
2026/07/01
What does it mean to love what is real, without giving up hope for what could be? In this episode, we explore acceptance not as approval or resignation, but as the honest seeing that makes love, grief, boundaries, and faithful hope possible — for our children, our ward members, ourselves, and the Church. This is the challenge we all face at one time or another: how do we stop loving the picture in our heads, and begin loving what is actually in front of us?
64. Father's Day at Church: Another Honest Conversation
2026/06/19
We did an episode for Father's Day and it might be for you if you've ever felt some tension about how fatherhood gets talked about (or doesn't) at church. So many of the talks default into talking about the priesthood instead of the actual, lived experience of being a dad. We dig into that gap and what it might look like to talk about fatherhood on its own terms.
