200 Execs, 1 Recruiter. The Party He Almost Skipped
2026/10/26
Tyler Frisbie was 33 years old with exactly $100,000 to his name. Every penny of it sat in his 401(k), built over 12 years of contributions. He had a stay-at-home wife, two kids in private school, credit card debt, and a VP title at a family-owned recycling company where he would never be family. So he cashed out the entire account, against the advice of almost everyone he knew, and bought a recruiting franchise in an industry he had never worked a single day in. He was not a recruiter. He had never made a placement. It took six months to close his first deal, and it was not even in his niche.
Two years later, Tyler walked the exhibit hall at the waste industry’s biggest trade show in Atlanta for two days straight, handing out Frisbee-shaped business cards to anyone who would take one. It got him almost nothing. Feet aching, discouraged, he went back to his hotel, kicked off his shoes, and nearly turned in for the night. In his pocket was an invitation to a bankers’ cocktail reception he had already decided was a waste of time. He put his shoes back on anyway. When he stepped off the elevator, he realized every person in the room was a CEO, CFO, or private equity managing partner, roughly 200 of them, and he was the only recruiter there. A planned ten-minute appearance turned into three hours. He walked out with eight quality job orders, and that one night reshaped the entire trajectory of his desk.
Today Tyler runs GRN McKinney with his daughters Riley and Waverly, a retained executive search practice focused exclusively on VP and C-suite roles in the waste, recycling, and environmental services sector, working primarily with private equity firms. As Tyler tells it, the numbers behind that evolution are staggering: a $2.5 million solo year in 2018 that ended in burnout and a sabbatical, $1.8 million billed this year with his daughter, and just shy of $20 million in total billings since 2012, all built on referrals from bankers and lenders, with no marketing and no outbound business development. In this conversation, Tyler breaks down what he actually did in that room, how he became the name investment bankers hand to their clients, why his firm caps itself at five searches at a time, why he turns away real money, and the advice from a blunt garbage entrepreneur that cured his people-pleasing.
This episode of The Pinnacle Take is about two things. Going all in when everyone says you are an idiot. And the fact that one night, one room, one decision to put your shoes back on can change everything.
What You’ll Learn:
How Tyler worked a room of 200 executives as the only recruiter there, and left with eight job orders
The behaviors that turn one good night into a decade-long referral engine of bankers and lenders
Why private equity clients choose a boutique specialist over the biggest search firms
The partnership-versus-vendor filter Tyler uses to decide which searches to turn down
What a $2.5 million solo year actually cost him, and what he permanently changed after his sabbatical
How he structures a family desk with his daughters without letting business swallow the family

80% Of The Office's Billings. Fired Over 8 Words.
2026/09/14
James Smith was the top producer in his MRI office, generating most of its revenue, when he walked in and told the owner eight words: one day I'd like to start a business. No plan. No date. Just a someday. The next morning, after an overnight consult with the lawyer and the accountant, he was fired.
He walked out with a brand new mortgage three times the size of his last one, a son just accepted to private school, and a wife who did not yet know she was pregnant. A neighbor came by with $1,000 because everyone felt sorry for him. James took that, an unemployment self-employment program, and 25 years of stubbornness, and built a retained search firm that has been climbing the Forbes list of America's best recruiting firms ever since.
That is the origin. The reason this conversation matters right now is what came after the success. Because a few years ago, the desk that relationships had fed for two decades went quiet. Clients he had worked with for 10, 15, 20 years stopped spending. In this episode James walks through the Monday he stopped waiting for it to come back: pulling every client and every candidate his firm had ever touched, getting back on the phone with no agenda except genuine curiosity, and how one relationship callback turned into 15 retained searches with a Fortune 100 company.
Along the way: the 300 placements he made inside a single client and how you actually go from one contact to owning an org chart, why he now measures outcomes instead of talk time, the Kansas City keynote on transformation that he admits was aimed at himself, why he tells candidates he is not a recruiter but a career manager, and the nonprofit he refused to let die that now sits at $1.2 million and puts kids through college, as James tells it, one scholarship email at a time.
If your desk has slowed and you are wondering whether the engine restarts, James gives you the blueprint. Then he tells you the two things most recruiters never do with it: implement and execute.

Significance & the Hidden Truths of High-Performing Recruiters
2026/08/19
What does the person who has sat across from some of the best recruiters in the business actually see when he looks at them?
In his first podcast appearance ever, Kevin Parker joins Benjamin Mena for a conversation that goes where recruiting content almost never goes. Kevin is a licensed clinical social worker and licensed clinical addiction specialist with 20 years in the psychotherapy world, and he has spent years in what he calls sacred spaces with high performers, usually as the one asking the questions. This time, he answers them.
Kevin opens with what he sees in those rooms: incredible, entrepreneurial people whose minds run ten steps ahead of everyone else, and who often have nowhere to take the wins, the losses, or the weight of it all. Leadership can be a lonely place, and the antidote, he argues, starts with saying it out loud. Name it to tame it. He shares his three rules for who deserves to hear your story, why the recruiters who can look back on lost deals with gratitude are the ones who grow, and why the difference between a human doing and a human being changes everything.
From there the conversation moves through the four buckets of life, biological, psychological, social, and spiritual, and why the trouble starts when you look into your social bucket and only see work. Kevin explains why he abandoned the phrase work-life balance entirely in favor of tension, a rope that has to be pulled in different directions as life demands it. Drawing on Bob Buford's book Halftime, he lays out the difference between success, which is measurable and honestly not that hard, and significance, which is humble, relational, and much harder to build. He takes on imposter syndrome through the lens of Internal Family Systems and makes the case that there are no bad parts, only parts that need to be thanked and told to take a seat. He speaks directly to working moms carrying full-time careers, full-time motherhood, and breadwinning all at once, and challenges the women who shattered the glass ceiling to mentor the ones coming up behind them.
And to the recruiter listening who feels alone right now, Kevin closes with the answer he has spent 20 years arriving at, and a challenge for everyone who is not lonely: pick up the phone.
By the end, one question is left deliberately unanswered. That one is for part 2.
Remember that you are significant.

21 CFOs Showed Up To His Office At 8AM. He Never Asked For The Business

21 CFOs Showed Up To His Office At 8AM. He Never Asked For The Business.
Dario Furman got 21 CFOs to drive through South Florida traffic to sit in his conference room at 8 in the morning. No speakers, no sponsors, no sales deck. Before the room even emptied, one CFO handed him a search. That same night, another texted him a second one. He never asked for the business.
In this episode of The Pinnacle Take, Benjamin Mena sits down with Dario Furman, VP of Finance and Accounting Search at StevenDouglas and one of the newest members of the Pinnacle Society. Dario has billed $7.33 million personally with 448 placements over 12 years, and he has never made a cold call. Instead, 63 percent of his closed searches come from candidates who later became clients, most of whom he never even placed.
Dario shares the story behind that number: arriving from Argentina at age 3 with a mother who sold empanadas on the street to keep them going, getting fired on his third day in recruiting, and pulling over on the side of the road to email the president of the company asking for another shot. He breaks down how he built the South Florida Finance Leadership Exchange in just 8 days, why he spent his first years purely recruiting before ever touching sales, how he privately tracks every metric inside a firm that hates the word KPI, and why the real skill of a top biller is surviving the 210 days a year when nothing goes right.
Whether you are chasing your first Pinnacle-level year or already there, this conversation is a masterclass in playing the long game.

The Quiet Obsession Behind 30 Years at the Top with David Fishman
2026/05/22
Most recruiters who last three decades stop working the desk. David Fishman never did. Thirty years in, no college degree, still personally in the deals every single day — and still convinced he hasn't figured it out yet. That restlessness is the whole story of this episode.
David came up the hard way: eight years in the Coast Guard, an injury that pushed him out, then selling industrial batteries door-to-door in downtown Los Angeles before he ever touched recruiting. He talks openly about the chip he carried as the guy without the degree — his twin brother went the academic route and stacked up credentials — and how that chip turned into a habit of simply outworking everyone in the room. When the 2008–2009 market collapsed and his phone went quiet, he started Sparrow Company out of necessity, ran it fully virtual for years before anyone called it normal, and built it across the U.S.–Mexico border into the operation it is today.
What makes this conversation land for a Pinnacle audience is how honest David is about the engine underneath the success. He describes a feeling that's chased him since he was in his early thirties — the sense that time is running out, that complacency is the real enemy, and that you have to recreate yourself again and again or the business leaves you behind. He admits that even now, after everything, he carries the same worries he had as a young recruiter, and that the current market has reminded him of 2009 in ways that keep him sharp rather than comfortable.
The tactical core is his shift from chasing dollars to counting deals. For his first twenty years he never tracked what he billed; now he's obsessed with the number of placements, because in his words, close the deals and the money follows. He breaks down the "waves" of the recruiting calendar and why teams that celebrate a big first half get punched in the face by the fall. He explains why he reads a résumé the way he does, why he never lets go of a placement, and why the recruiters who think this is an eight-to-five job should find another line of work. And he closes with the discipline he swears by: win Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and the momentum carries the rest of the week — and the rest of the year.
If you've been in recruiting long enough to wonder whether your best years are behind you, this is the episode that reframes that fear as fuel.
