ADHD & Somatic Movement: When Your Brain Won't Stop, Start With Your Body | Kira Macoun
2026/09/29
Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note. ADHD and somatic movement: 19-year movement professional Kira Macoun explains how tuning into your body can calm an ADHD brain, release tension you didn't know you were holding, and make stillness feel possible, even if meditation has never worked for you. If you've tried every meditation app and concluded you're just bad at stillness, this conversation is for you. Kira spent years breaking down in tears trying to meditate "the right way," until one winter night in a parked car in Chicago taught her that calm can start in the body, not the mind. That moment set her on the path to clinical somatic movement, and in this episode she makes it practical for ADHD brains. IN THIS EPISODE: - The parked car story that finally made meditation click for Kira, and what somatic movement is in plain words - Hanna Somatics and pandiculation: contracting into tension so your brain learns how to let it go, plus the stress reflexes and why stretching alone doesn't work - ADHD in daily life: meltdowns, racing thoughts, and the movement tools (dancing, movement breaks) that help, plus what a general anxiety disorder diagnosis reframed ─────────── CONNECT WITH KIRA: Website: comfyfitness.com (now) Instagram: @comfy_fitness ─────────── 📩 Get weekly ADHD insights delivered to your inbox: Jorie's Substack and Newsletters ─────────── RATE & REVIEW If this episode resonated, please follow the show & leave a review here: https://ratethispodcast.com/adhdand ─────────── ABOUT THE SHOW ADHD &... with Jorie Houlihan is a podcast for women with ADHD who are tired of trying harder and ready to understand how their brain works. ADHD &... the Unanswered Text: Why Replying Feels So Hard
2026/09/15
Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note. The unanswered text sits there getting heavier every time you see the bold name in your messages. It's been three weeks. If that's you, ADHD is not flakiness, and this episode sees you. You've written the reply at least six times in your head. In this episode: ➜ Why a ten-second text becomes twelve decisions in an ADHD brain, and why I call it the Activation Wall ➜ The unsent reply trap, and why "I'll reply when I can do it right" is a window that never opens ➜ The two-line reply that does the repair and makes the plan, plus when a real apology is owed vs. a light one ─────────── 📩 Get weekly ADHD insights delivered to your inbox: Jorie's Substack and Newsletters ─────────── RATE & REVIEW: If this episode resonated, please follow the show & leave a review here: https://ratethispodcast.com/adhdand ─────────── ABOUT THE PODCAST ADHD &... with Jorie Houlihan is a podcast for women with ADHD who are tired of trying harder - and ready to understand how their brain works. ADHD Decision Fatigue: How to Protect Your Energy
2026/08/18
Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note. ADHD decision fatigue can turn a simple choice, like what to eat for lunch, into something your brain cannot handle. By 10 a.m., ADHD women have already made thousands of decisions about breakfast, clothes, and email, so their brains can start to shut down by lunchtime. Decision fatigue is not just an end of day problem, it is a constant companion. This episode looks at decision fatigue through the ADHD lens: why it hits sooner and harder, what helps, and how to recognize when you need to stop and rest. In this episode: ➜ Why ADHD brains reach decision-making capacity faster than neurotypical brains (executive function, working memory, perfectionism, and time blindness all play a part) ➜ Practical ways to reduce the number of decisions you make each day, from default options and batching to decision trees and timeboxing ➜ How to recognize your early warning signs of decision fatigue and build a recovery plan for when it hits ─────────── 📩 Get weekly ADHD insights delivered to your inbox: Jorie's Substack and Newsletters ─────────── RATE & REVIEW If this episode resonated, please follow the show & leave a review here: https://ratethispodcast.com/adhdand ─────────── ABOUT THE PODCAST ADHD &... with Jorie Houlihan is a podcast for women with ADHD who are tired of trying harder and ready to understand how their brain works. ADHD &... Body Doubling: How to Borrow Someone Else's Focus
2026/08/04
Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note. Body doubling sounds like something out of a psychology textbook, but if you've ever gotten more done because a friend sat nearby with her own laptop, you've already been doing it. In this episode, Jorie breaks down what body doubling really means for an ADHD brain: simply having another person present while you work, with no help or attention required from them, and why that presence alone can turn an overwhelming task into a manageable one. Needing this kind of support isn't a sign you can't work alone. It's a sign you understand your brain and know how to work with it, the same way glasses help someone see more clearly. In this episode: ➜ What body doubling is and why it works so well for an ADHD brain ➜ Practical ways to build it into your day, from virtual coworking to a busy coffee shop ➜ How to find your ideal body doubling match and set it up so it works for you, not against you ─────────── 📩 Get weekly ADHD insights delivered to your inbox: Jorie's Substack and Newsletter: https://tinyurl.com/33z4a5j5 ─────────── RATE & REVIEW: If this episode resonated, please follow the show & leave a review here: https://ratethispodcast.com/adhdand ABOUT THE PODCAST ADHD &... with Jorie Houlihan is a podcast for women with ADHD who are tired of trying harder and ready to understand how their brain works. When Achievement Hides ADHD | April Garcia
2026/07/28
Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note. I laughed so much during this interview and I know you will too. While training to become an occupational therapist, April Garcia did an entire school project on ADHD, building a strategy for kids who couldn't get ready for school on time no matter how hard they tried. Nine years later, she found out she had ADHD herself, and almost nobody around her was surprised...except for April herself. April is the author of The Room to Be Brave, a memoir that uses the metaphor of rooms in a house to walk through the parts of her past that shaped her. In this conversation, we talk about what happens when achievement becomes the way you hide the mess underneath, why doctors so often dismiss ADHD in women who look like they have it together on paper, and how she got sober and got diagnosed within ten days of each other. We also get into emotional dysregulation, the apology she owed her kids, and how humor has carried her family through some genuinely hard years, including her mother's decades-long illness. If nobody, including you, saw your ADHD coming, this episode will help you make sense of it. ─────────── CONNECT WITH APRIL: Website: aprildaygarcia.com Instagram & Facebook: @AprilDayGarcia Book: The Room to Be Brave, available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and wherever books are sold ─────────── RESOURCES MENTIONED: Laurel Denise Planners: https://www.laureldenise.com - use my code JHLD10 for 10% off your purchase! ─────────── 📩 Get weekly ADHD insights delivered to your inbox: Jorie's Substack and Newsletters: https://tinyurl.com/33z4a5j5 ─────────── RATE & REVIEW: If this episode resonated, please follow the show & leave a review here: https://ratethispodcast.com/adhdand ABOUT THE PODCAST ADHD &... with Jorie Houlihan is a podcast for women with ADHD who are tired of trying harder - and ready to understand how their brain works. ADHD &... The Hidden Cost of Masking
2026/06/30
Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note. Have you ever caught yourself acting one way at work, another way with friends, and something closer to yourself only when you're completely alone? That split is exhausting. And if you have ADHD, there's a good chance it has a name: masking. In this episode, we unpack what ADHD masking actually is, why so many women with ADHD do it without even realizing it, and what it quietly costs you over time. This isn't about dropping every filter overnight or suddenly oversharing with your coworkers. It's about starting to notice when you're masking, asking yourself whether it's serving you, and slowly building spaces in your life where your real self feels welcome. There's also a distinction in this episode that tends to land hard: the difference between fitting in and belonging. They sound similar. They are not. And understanding the difference might be exactly what you need to hear today. In this episode: ➜ What ADHD masking is and why it develops ➜ Why women with ADHD are especially affected ➜ The difference between fitting in and belonging * This episode originally aired October 28, 2025. ───────────────────────────────────────── CONNECT WITH JORIE: 🔗 Ready to work on this with someone who gets it?
