Pac-12 Play Is FINALLY Here, and Boise State Controls the CFP Race
2026/09/30
Pac-12 conference play has officially arrived, and Boise State enters the first full weekend as the team everyone else is chasing.
No. 22 Boise State faces Utah State, Oregon State takes on Colorado State, Fresno State travels to Washington State and Texas State meets San Diego State as the new-look Pac-12 begins conference play.
But this weekend is about more than the conference standings.
The Group of 6 College Football Playoff race is wide open.
Boise State has established itself as the early favorite after building a resume that includes wins over Memphis and Western Michigan, plus a competitive loss at Oregon. The Broncos are ranked and control their path if they continue winning.
Who can challenge them?
Oregon State has been one of the biggest surprises in the Pac-12 behind quarterback Brayden Atkinson. Washington State remains an intriguing dark horse entering its matchup against Fresno State in Pullman.
Then there's North Dakota State.
The undefeated Bison have immediately become a legitimate part of the Group of 6 conversation in their first FBS season. If NDSU keeps winning while Boise State eventually stumbles, the CFP debate could become fascinating.
Pac-12 play starts now.
And so does the race to determine which Group of 6 program gets its shot at the College Football Playoff.

Pac-12 Basketball PRESEASON Power Rankings: Gonzaga No. 1, But Who’s Next?
2026/09/28
Pac-12 basketball is almost here, and we're ranking all nine teams before the 2026-27 college basketball season. Gonzaga starts at No. 1, but Utah State, San Diego State and several dark horses could make this conference fascinating.
The complete preseason rankings: Gonzaga, Utah State, San Diego State, Colorado State, Oregon State, Boise State, Texas State, Fresno State and Washington State. LOP12_928b_FINAL
Gonzaga remains the team to beat despite lingering roster eligibility questions. Braden Huff and Diop give Mark Few potentially the best frontcourt in the Pac-12, while Davis Fogle and Isaiah Harwell add even more upside.
Utah State comes in at No. 2 behind potential Pac-12 Player of the Year Mason Falslev. San Diego State remains No. 3 despite significant offseason losses and the injury to Nick Anderson, largely because of Brian Dutcher's track record. LOP12_928b_FINAL
Then things get unpredictable.
Colorado State's continuity earns the Rams the No. 4 spot, while Oregon State could become one of the conference's biggest wild cards under new head coach Justin Joyner. Josiah Lake returns to lead a dramatically rebuilt Beavers roster loaded with transfer talent. LOP12_928b_FINAL
Boise State sits sixth, followed by Texas State, Fresno State and Washington State.
Texas State might be particularly dangerous behind DJ Hall, who averaged 15.5 points and eight rebounds as a freshman. Meanwhile, Washington State enters the preseason at No. 9 after another offseason filled with major transfer portal departures. LOP12_928b_FINAL
College basketball is almost back.
Where did we get the Pac-12 rankings right, and which team are we completely overlooking?

Washington State LOST... But Wazzu May Have Found Something
2026/09/28
Washington State football fell to 1-3 after a 34-24 loss to Arizona, but Kirby Moore and the Cougars showed legitimate signs of progress before beginning Pac-12 play against Fresno State.
Wazzu led Arizona by multiple scores before Noah Fifita and the Wildcats stormed back. Fifita finished with four touchdown passes, exposing issues in the Washington State secondary, but this looked much more competitive than some of WSU’s previous performances. LOP12_928A_FINAL
Caden Pinnock remains one of the biggest storylines.
Pinnock made a costly mistake throwing into triple coverage, but he also showed improvement operating outside the pocket and continued battling despite facing pressure. The Cougars need to protect him better as the offensive line continues developing around Jalen Caldwell and the rest of the group. LOP12_928A_FINAL
Now comes an opportunity to completely reset the season.
Washington State opens Pac-12 play at home against Fresno State, and there may be a clear path toward getting Kirby Moore’s offense going.
Rice rushed for 344 yards against Fresno State. Washington State hasn't consistently established the rushing attack Moore wants, but Maxwell Woods, Kirby Voorhees and Leo Pulalasi give the Cougars options in the backfield. LOP12_928A_FINAL
If Wazzu can establish the run and Pinnock protects the football, this offense could finally begin looking like the unit envisioned during the offseason.
The 1-3 record isn't pretty.
But Pac-12 play represents a fresh start.
And Washington State has an immediate opportunity against Fresno State to prove this team is moving in the right direction.

Fresno State Has FIGURED IT OUT! Are the Bulldogs a Pac-12 Contender?
2026/09/27
Fresno State football improved to 3-1 with a 38-24 win over Rice as Jayden Mandal, Rayshawn Luke and the Bulldogs continue emerging as major factors entering Pac-12 play.
After the ugly season-opening loss to USC, Fresno State has won three straight. Mandal has been one of the biggest reasons why. He finished 22-of-34 for 210 yards and three touchdowns against Rice while adding 57 rushing yards and committing zero turnovers.
Mandal has now gone three consecutive games without a turnover, showing the confidence and composure Fresno State hoped to see when it named him the starting quarterback. LOP12_927_fresno
The running game finally broke through as well.
Rayshawn Luke exploded for 167 rushing yards as Fresno State finished with 249 yards on the ground. Luke's ability to create explosive runs gives the Bulldogs another dimension alongside Bryson Donaldson and short-yardage back Julius Gillick. LOP12_927_fresno
There are still concerns. Fresno State allowed 344 rushing yards against Rice and has yet to score a first-quarter point this season. But this defense continues creating turnovers, with Simeon Harris recording an interception for the third consecutive game.
Now the Bulldogs head to Pullman for their Pac-12 opener against Washington State.
That matchup could play directly into Fresno State's defensive identity. Young Wazzu quarterback Caden Pinnock has thrown four interceptions through four games, while Fresno State continues finding ways to take the football away.
At 3-1, Fresno State enters conference play with an opportunity to establish itself immediately.

San Diego State COLLAPSES Again! Is Sean Lewis on the Hot Seat?
2026/09/26
San Diego State football fell to 1-3 after an ugly 41-16 loss to Toledo, while Colorado State blew an early 14-0 lead in a 59-45 loss to UTSA. Two Pac-12 teams entered Saturday with major opportunities and both walked away with serious questions.
San Diego State’s situation is becoming especially concerning.
The Aztecs have now lost to UCLA, James Madison and Toledo, all programs with first-year head coaches. Sean Lewis entered 2026 with expectations of competing near the top of the new Pac-12, but SDSU suddenly looks much closer to the bottom.
Injuries to Javion Kennard and Lucky Sutton made matters worse against Toledo. The Aztecs managed only 48 rushing yards while allowing Toledo to produce nearly 300 passing yards and 210 yards on the ground. 0926_912_AAAAA_FINAL
Colorado State’s loss was completely different.
The Rams jumped ahead 14-0 after Mel Brown returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and Kasson Farrar connected on another explosive score. Then UTSA answered with 28 straight points and eventually scored 59.
Farrar threw for 344 yards and two touchdowns, but Colorado State's defense couldn't get stops. UTSA threw for 303 yards while adding 239 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
Missed tackles, missed interception opportunities and defensive breakdowns completely changed a game Colorado State appeared ready to control.
Now both teams have major problems to solve before Pac-12 play begins.

Washington State Has a HUGE Opportunity Against Arizona, Kirby Moore Looking for Pac-12 RESPECT
2026/09/25
Washington State football gets its biggest opportunity yet under Kirby Moore when the Cougars host Arizona and quarterback Noah Fifita on national television in Pullman.
The Cougars finally showed signs of the offensive identity Moore has been trying to establish during their 48-7 win over Duquesne. Caden Pinnick completed 17 of 22 passes, while Maxwell Woods and Kirby Voorhees both surpassed 100 rushing yards as Washington State piled up 316 yards on the ground. LOP12_925_final
Now comes the real test.
Washington State has shown flashes against Washington and Kansas State, but Arizona provides another opportunity to prove this young program is actually making progress. The Wildcats bring Noah Fifita into Pullman, putting pressure on a Cougars defense that has been inconsistent through the opening weeks.
The biggest question may be whether Washington State can establish the same offensive identity against better competition. The Cougars want to run the football, protect their young quarterback and play with the faster tempo that emerged in the second half against Duquesne.
Washington State has another national television opportunity on CBS. A win over Arizona would be the first major statement of the Kirby Moore era.
Is Wazzu ready to take that step?

Texas State May Have Found Its NEW Offensive Identity RIGHT BEFORE Pac-12 Play
2026/09/25
Texas State football has found a potential offensive identity before Pac-12 play as Torrence Burgess Jr. emerges as one of the hottest running backs in college football.
Burgess rushed for 214 yards on 25 carries against North Texas after putting up 149 yards against UTSA. He has averaged more than 8.5 yards per carry in each of his last two games and is averaging 132 rushing yards per game this season.
That development could be massive for G.J. Kinne and the Bobcats.
Texas State entered 2026 with major expectations surrounding Brad Jackson and its passing attack, but the running game has unexpectedly become the strength of the offense.
Now the Bobcats get Incarnate Word before beginning Pac-12 play against San Diego State. The opponent may not be the biggest test, but the objective is clear: establish consistency, keep Burgess rolling, get more from the passing game and show improvement defensively.
Oregon State football also has an opportunity to build momentum before Pac-12 play with a road matchup against UTEP.
Braden Atkinson has already thrown for more than 1,100 yards, while true freshman Jesse LeGree has exploded for 476 receiving yards through three games. The Beavers' offense is quickly becoming one of the most dangerous in the Pac-12, but continued improvement from the running game and defense could determine whether Oregon State develops into a legitimate conference championship contender.
Finally, Boise State heads to Kalamazoo for a massive matchup against Western Michigan.
The Broncos need another quality non-conference win to strengthen their College Football Playoff résumé before Pac-12 play. Boise State's defense has surrendered 12 plays of 40-plus yards, but Western Michigan has not consistently attacked defenses vertically.
Boise State may instead lean on its rushing attack after Riley and Gaines combined for 300 yards against South Dakota. With Maddox Madsen managing the offense and freshman Rashawn Jones emerging as another weapon, this is a major opportunity for Boise State to strengthen its position in the Group of 6 race.
Can Texas State and Oregon State build momentum while Boise State handles one of the biggest Group of 6 games of the weekend?

Boise State’s CFP Path Is on the LINE! Pac-12 Faces a HUGE Week
2026/09/23
The Pac-12 has a massive weekend ahead with three games that could reshape the Group of 6 College Football Playoff conversation.
On Locked On Pac-12, Christian Rauh is joined by Colton Pool of The Pool Report to break down Boise State vs. Western Michigan, Colorado State vs. UTSA and San Diego State vs. Toledo.
Boise State remains Christian’s No. 1 team in the Pac-12, but there are legitimate concerns after the Broncos nearly let South Dakota steal a game on the blue. The biggest issue? Explosive plays. Boise State has surrendered 12 plays of at least 40 yards through three games, while the pass rush has generated only five sacks. Can Spencer Danielson’s defense correct those problems against Western Michigan?
Maddox Madsen also enters the spotlight as Boise State tries to strengthen its position in the Group of 6 CFP race.
Colorado State faces a different problem against UTSA. Hauss Hejny’s status is uncertain after leaving the BYU game, potentially forcing Jim Mora to turn to Darius Curry or Kason Farrar. Christian and Colton explain why Mel Brown and the Rams’ rushing attack could become the key to pulling off a road win.
Then there’s San Diego State.
The Aztecs have been one of the Pac-12’s biggest disappointments, and Jayden Denegal enters the Toledo matchup with four touchdowns, four interceptions and a 53% completion percentage. How long is Sean Lewis willing to stick with his starting quarterback?
Christian introduces the fascinating alternative: Stone Saunders, the former Kentucky quarterback who finished his Pennsylvania high school career with 13,700 passing yards and 204 touchdowns.
Three games. Major Pac-12 implications. And another important weekend in the race for the Group of 6 CFP spot.

The NEW Pac-12 Power Rankings Have a FIGHT for the TOP SPOT
2026/09/22
The Pac-12 power rankings are shifting, and the battle for the No. 1 spot is getting much closer. Boise State still leads Christian Rauh’s rankings, but Oregon State is making a serious case after an impressive offensive performance against Montana. Is the gap between the Broncos and Beavers disappearing?
On today’s Locked On Pac-12, Christian ranks all eight football teams and breaks down what changed, which teams are gaining momentum and what each program needs to show before conference play begins.
Boise State remains No. 1 after wins over Memphis and South Dakota, but its secondary continues to give up explosive plays. Christian examines the defensive concerns, special teams mistakes and the importance of the Broncos’ upcoming road game against Western Michigan.
Oregon State sits at No. 2 following a 52-17 win over Montana. Quarterback Braden Atkinson has impressed Christian, while Aaron Butler, Jesse LeGree, Arian Hampton and tight end Eric Olsen have helped establish a dangerous receiving group. With head coach JaMarcus Shephard’s offense finding its rhythm, the Beavers are putting pressure on Boise State at the top.
Colorado State holds the No. 3 spot despite its 41-23 loss to BYU. Christian discusses the quarterback situation following Hauss Hejny’s injury and what the Rams showed against a difficult opponent.
San Diego State drops to No. 4 after a disappointing performance against James Madison. Javian Kennard provided a major bright spot with 181 rushing yards and 70 receiving yards, but the Aztecs need more consistency from their passing game.
Fresno State checks in at No. 5 after beating San Jose State 26-10. The Bulldogs’ defense produced four interceptions, but Christian explains why Jayden Mandal and the offense still have work to do before Pac-12 play.
Texas State rises to No. 6 after winning a shootout against North Texas. Brad Jackson threw four touchdowns, Torrance Burgess Jr. continued his strong start, and the Bobcats showed second-half defensive improvement. Can their offense keep producing enough points to overcome concerns in the secondary?
Washington State stays at No. 7 despite a 48-7 win over Duquesne. The Cougars finally got their running game going with Maxwell Woods and Kirby Voorhees, but Christian wants to see that production carry over against Arizona.
Utah State falls to No. 8 after a 33-0 loss to Utah. Christian examines the Aggies’ offensive struggles and what needs to change before their upcoming games against Troy and Boise State.
Do you agree with Boise State remaining No. 1, or has Oregon State done enough to take over? Where would you rank Colorado State, San Diego State and Fresno State?
Subscribe to Locked On Pac-12 with Christian Rauh for daily coverage of Boise State, Oregon State, Colorado State, San Diego State, Fresno State, Texas State, Washington State and Utah State.

Can Bronco Mendenhall's Utah State SHOCK Utah After Nearly Upsetting Washington?
2026/09/17
Utah State football nearly shocked Washington. Can Bronco Mendenhall and the Aggies now give Utah a serious challenge in the Battle of the Brothers?
On today's Locked On College Crossover, Christian Rauh of Locked On Pac-12 joins JT Whistler of Locked On Utes to preview Utah vs. Utah State, break down the biggest matchups and deliver their Week 3 score predictions.
Utah State has been one of college football's most unpredictable teams. After losing to Idaho State, the Aggies pushed Washington to the wire in a two-point loss. Now, quarterback Grady Brosterhouse gets his first full week of preparation as QB1 before heading into Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Can that change help Utah State protect the football after seven interceptions through two games?
We also break down how Utah State's defense can try to contain dual-threat quarterback Devon Dampier, why the Aggies desperately need more production from their running game, and whether former Utah State receiver Braden Pegan could have a big day against his old team.
PLUS, Bronco Mendenhall returns to face Utah, and both hosts reveal their final score predictions. Christian has Utah winning 41-21, while JT predicts a 53-17 Utes victory.
Will Utah State keep another game close against a ranked opponent, or will Utah take control in Salt Lake City?

Mark Few, Gonzaga Is Backing a Bill That Could CHANGE the Pac-12
2026/09/16
Gonzaga head coach Mark Few is backing the Protect College Sports Act, but what could this legislation mean for Gonzaga, Pac-12 expansion, NIL, and the future of college athletics?
Christian Rauh of Locked On Pac-12 and Andy Patton of Locked On Zags join forces for a Locked On College Crossover to break down Mark Few's support for the Protect College Sports Act and the potential impact on the new Pac-12 conference.

Something Is CLEARLY Changing at Oregon State
2026/09/16
Oregon State is 0-2.
And somehow, I feel BETTER about the Beavers than I did before the season.
Ryan Harlan of Beaver Blitz joins Locked On Pac-12 to break down what we've learned about JaMarcus Shepard's program after competitive performances against Houston and Texas Tech.
Brayden Atkinson looks like Oregon State found its quarterback. Jesse LeGree is quickly becoming one of the most exciting young receivers in college football. And perhaps most importantly, Shepard appears to be changing the expectations surrounding the entire program.
We also look ahead to Montana, discuss what could prevent Oregon State from competing near the top of the Pac-12, and debate whether I have the Beavers WAY too high at No. 2 in my latest Pac-12 power rankings.
The record says 0-2.
The football we've watched says something much more interesting is happening in Corvallis.

The Pac-12 Power Rankings Just Changed A LOT
2026/09/15
The Pac-12 Power Rankings have undergone a MAJOR shakeup after Week 2.
Boise State remains No. 1 after responding to an early deficit with an impressive win over Memphis.
But No. 2?
Oregon State.
The Beavers may be 0-2, but after battling two AP Top 25 opponents, Jamarcus Shepard's team has shown enough to make a massive jump in this week's rankings.
Meanwhile, Washington State is heading in the opposite direction after its ugly loss to Kansas State.
Christian Rauh breaks down all eight teams before Al Scott of Fresno Sports Magazine joins the show to discuss Fresno State's 49-3 response against Sacramento State, Jayden Mandel's huge bounce-back performance and whether the Bulldogs can still contend for a Pac-12 championship.
Plus, Fresno State heads to San Jose State with a chance to prove the USC disaster doesn't define this team.

San Diego State Just Got a RUDE Awakening Against UCLA | AFTER DARK
2026/09/13
San Diego State had an opportunity to make a statement against UCLA.
Instead, the Aztecs gave us A LOT more questions.
SDSU falls 28-10 at UCLA after an ugly offensive performance, including just six completions. Jayden Denegal struggled, the offensive line didn't help him, the play-calling left plenty to be desired and the defense had major tackling problems.
Meanwhile, Colorado State keeps rolling.
The Rams are 2-0 after beating Southern Utah 58-24, Hoss Haney now has nine touchdowns against just one interception, and Jim Mora's team is starting to look like a legitimate factor in the Pac-12.
And Fresno State responded in a BIG way.
After getting embarrassed by USC, the Bulldogs demolished Sacramento State 49-3 behind a nearly flawless performance from Jayden Mandel.
Week 2 gave us some major movement in the Pac-12.
And Monday's power rankings could look VERY different.
