On this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program, the first half of the show will be handed over to a retrospective of the late Richie Beirach who passed away earlier this week. We'll hear him in many contexts across his career including with his long-time collaborator Dave Liebman (Richie's visits to Vancouver were mostly in the context of their working quartet Quest), in all-star trios and solo. The late Ian McDougall, who passed away the same day as Richie, takes in the theme with his regular collaborators including Oliver Gannon. We'll also have a quick Grammy rundown in advance of the awards this weekend that includes Lakecia Benjamin, Chick Corea, Nicole Zuraitis, Sullivan Fortner, Michael Mayo, Arturo O'Farrill (playing Carla Bley's last commissioned work), Laila Biali, The Sun Ra Arkestra (also coming to Vancouver in February courtesy of our friends at Infidels Jazz), and Branford Marsalis doing the music of Keith Jarrett. Looking forward and looking back, kicking off 2026 in style on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program! A new release from Carsten Dahl takes in the theme and then a nod to Milt Jackson's birthday yesterday leads into a survey of some great contemporary vibes players with Joel Ross, Patricia Brennan, Sasha Berliner, and Steve Nelson. Of course Nelson is part of the all-star ensemble at Frankie's Jazz Club this weekend along with David Hazeltine, Steve Davis, Cory Weeds, Ken Lister and Jesse Cahill so we have a set featuring all of them in various combinations (and include a nod to Nick Hempton for his 50th birthday yesterday!) Building tributes to three great musicians around live performances on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program! The legendary Coleman Hawkins celebrates his birthday today and we'll hear a number of live performances including the 1940 performance of Body and Soul from the Savory Collection. Sheila Jordan's Celebration of Life took place earlier this week on what would have been her 97th birthday. We'll hear the full second set of her duo with Cameron Brown at Ironworks from March of 2017 along with a number of other iconic performances. Finally we'll hear Jack DeJohnette with his Special Edition at the Edmonton Jazz City Festival in 1980 with a short interview conducted by the late Gavin Walker along with some other favourite JD recordings. We'll also have time for some other recent birthdays - the theme from David Amram who turned 95 earlier this week, Aretha Tillotson with a new release featuring the Jensen sisters and centenaries for June Christy (Something Cool!) and (today) Sal Salvador!
