S2 E35 | How Men Actually Change
2026/09/28
Why can a man understand his patterns and speak fluent recovery language, yet stay the same man a year later? Many couples live with that question. In this episode, Roy takes it on directly.
Recorded live during our webinar How Men Actually Change, this teaching lays out the model of change we use with men who have caused harm through deceptive sexual behavior. Roy explains why trying harder keeps failing, and how every man is being formed by the stories he believes, the habits he practices, and the relationships he's in. He then walks through how teaching, intentional practice, and honest community can counter the forces that built the double life.
For betrayed partners: nothing in this episode is evidence about any particular man, including yours, and nothing in it asks anything of you. Your healing and your timeline belong to you.
This teaching draws on research about habits and formation as well as Roy's Christian faith. You don't need to share that faith to take something from it.

S2 E34 | Stop Trying to Get Your Wife Back
2026/09/21
Most men in recovery are working hard. The problem is what the work is aimed at.
This episode takes apart a pattern that shows up in almost every man's recovery after discovery day: the private contract. It's the deal a man writes in his own head without realizing he's writing it. If I go to therapy, if I do a disclosure, if I hand over the passwords, if I learn empathy, then she should trust me, she should calm down, she should stop asking the same questions, she should notice how far I've come.
She never signed that contract. She was never shown it. But he tries to collect on it anyway, and the day she doesn't pay is the day resentment starts growing.
Before discovery, a man controlled the relationship through deception. After discovery, he can go right on controlling it through recovery. The goal never changed. He just found a more respectable way to pursue it.
Inside the episode:
The private contract, and the shoulds written on the other side of it
Signs your recovery has quietly become a transaction
The structural test used in the Integrity Circle: would you still do this work if it earned you nothing?
Intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation, and why one of them holds up when conditions get hard
Five specific scenarios where an outcome-driven recovery collapses
Why integrity is not a rate sheet you submit to your wife
The grief work most men avoid by staying busy trying to fix things
A word to men of faith about obedience that is not leverage
This is not a message to stop loving your wife or to stop hoping for your marriage. It's a message to stop using your recovery as leverage.

S2 E33 | The Three Jobs of Real Recovery
2026/09/13
Most men walk into recovery overwhelmed. Sponsor, therapist, workbooks, disclosure, inner child, attachment styles, triggers, 12 steps, couples check-ins. All of it can help, and none of it is a map. Roy brings recovery down to its DNA: three jobs. Tell the truth. Face the harm. Live one life.
Sobriety is the floor. It's the entry ticket, not the work. What comes after it is integrity, impact, and integration, and you'll be growing in those three lanes for the rest of your life. Simple, but not easy.
In this episode:
- What integrity includes beyond "I stopped lying"
- Why your partner is not your accountability partner
- Why she decides what she can handle, and you don't filter for her
- Why the only metric for truth-telling is accuracy, never her reaction
- The 22 traumatic injuries across three phases, and the exercise that shows you the cost
- How you respond to her pain today, and why patience means her timeline
- Why an integrated life is supposed to be boring
- Why all three jobs are simultaneous and last a lifetime

S2 E32 | You Trained Her Not to Trust You
2026/09/07
Seven months into being honest, I started a sentence with my wife that I never finished. "I've been honest with you for seven months now." She heard the rest of it anyway, and so did I: so you should trust me by now.
That was an invoice. Underneath it was an internal ledger, and underneath the ledger was entitlement that survived my sobriety and showed up in my recovery wearing a different voice.
In this episode: what trust actually is, why one lie outweighs a hundred honest days, why her trust comes back and then collapses after a trigger, and the one thing that rebuilds it. I close with Joseph and his brothers, which I think is the longest account of trust repair in Scripture.

S2 E31 | Integrity Abuse: Why You Keep Harming Her and How to Stop
2026/08/31
For two years after D-Day, Jacqueline would bring me her grief, her anger, or a question she had already asked, and I would get defensive. My working theory was that if she would change her end of it, even by 10%, I could manage mine better. That theory asked the person I injured to tone down her trauma so I could be more comfortable.
What got us out was one key I had never considered.
In this episode I walk through the ABC method applied to betrayal trauma, and I read out more than 20 of the false beliefs I actually held about my wife, grouped by her anger, her repeated questions, her grief, her boundaries, her vigilance, and her support system. Then I show you how to dispute those beliefs and exchange them for beliefs that are true, healthy, evidence-based, and pro-relational.
FREE WORKSHEET: The ABC Method, at https://www.joy-recovery.com/abcmethod
A caution for the men: this tool applies to your interpretations of her trauma and is never used on her. Analyzing your partner's fear, anger, or triggers as false beliefs is pathologizing her, and that is an integrity abuse behavior.
For partners listening: nothing here is an assignment for you. Take whatever is useful and leave the rest.

08:30 The key I had never considered
13:30 Shame is a false belief, and it distorts everything

The terms integrity abuse and secret sexual basement come from Dr. Omar Minwalla's Deceptive Sexuality and Trauma model. The belief work is built on Albert Ellis's ABC model, extended for this teaching.

S2 E30 | When She Knows More About HIs Recovery That He Does
2026/08/24
She Knows More About His Recovery Than He Does
A listener sent us this question: "When does a betrayed partner's expertise in recovery accidentally become scaffolding that prevents the betrayer from developing his own?"
We spend the whole episode on it, starting with the one word in that question that would make everything else land wrong if we let it stand: accidentally.
Roy and Jacqueline walk through the sequence that produced this pattern. He built the hidden life. He distorted her ability to see it. After D-Day, she became an expert because the one person who owed her the truth was withholding it. Her knowledge came second, and it came as a response to something he never built.
The episode covers the four reasons men go passive in their own recovery, the Structural Test of whether a man's recovery would still be running thirty days after she stopped managing it, and why we recommend against the words "over-functioning" and "under-functioning" in a deceptive sexuality context even though the theory behind them is legitimate.
Jacqueline speaks directly to partners about what that label erases, and about the common advice to step back and let him fall. Roy closes with a two-step assignment for the men that has silence built into it on purpose.

S2 E29 | Right Sight: Overcoming Objectification
2026/08/17
Somewhere in the last hour, you sized someone up from a single look. Your mind took one piece of information and wrote a whole biography. In this solo episode, Roy makes the case that the machinery producing those instant biographies is the same machinery that built the secret basement many men are now trying to dismantle.
Sexual objectification is one room in a much bigger house. If you only renovate that room, the rest of the house keeps producing the same habit of mind. This episode goes through the whole house: philosophy, psychology, theology, and a set of practical movements you can start running today. It closes with the hardest application of all, genuine repair toward the partner who was reduced most.
A caution, and it is the same one Roy gives on air: everything here points at the man doing his own work. None of it is a lens for evaluating your wife or partner, and none of it gets quoted at her, assigned to her, or used to grade her.

S2 E28 | Listening Without Self-Referencing: The Hardest Skill in Recovery
2026/08/10
He can be silent, nod, even say all the right words, and still not be listening. In this episode, Roy defines the skill that often determines whether a relationship has any chance of becoming safe again: listening without self-reference.
For the men, this is a behavioral capacity, observable and binary. After working with hundreds of men, Roy has not yet met one who had this skill out of the gate after disclosure or discovery. He explains why: years of deception organize the nervous system around image management, and that hidden operating system runs every hard conversation through damage control. Roy covers the four most common self-referencing patterns (the Fairness Check, the Intent Defense, the Shame Collapse, and the Progress Pivot) and the four practices that dismantle the machine over time.
For the betrayed partners, Jacqueline is clear that this is not your work to fix. She walks through listening to understand versus listening to defend, lived examples of what self-referencing looks and feels like from the receiving side, five observable signs of genuine impact capacity, and the WCE lens: willingness, capacity, and engagement. Your perception has been accurate. This episode helps you trust it.

S2 E27 | Your Wife is Grieving Someone Who Never Existed: Here's Your Job
2026/08/03
Hurricane Katrina came ashore more than twenty years ago. Some neighborhoods came back stronger than before. Others still sit under blue tarps. That is the most honest map we know of a betrayed partner's inner world.
This episode is about the parts of the harm that do not get repaired, no matter how much a man changes. We talk about why fixing feels safer than feeling, the losses that discovery leaves permanent, and what integrity actually asks of the man who caused the harm: to witness her grief instead of managing it.
A note for partners before you begin. This is a heavy one. You have full permission to pause and come back another day, or to skip it entirely. Nothing here is required of you, and your healing does not depend on listening to us talk about grief.

S2 E26 | Dismantling Defensiveness for Good
2026/07/27
A man named Daniel wrote in. Eleven months sober and honest, full disclosure done, and one night his wife looked at him in the kitchen and called him a monster. Everything in him rose up to fight back. He recited his eleven months like a resume, and it got worse from there. His questions: how does a man just stand there and take that, and is there a point where her words become abuse against him?
This episode lives inside the half second after she says the hardest thing. I take that half second apart. Where the flinch comes from, why your body treats "you are a monster" like an actual knife, and why your mind reaches for evidence before you have decided to say a word. Two of those moves are reflex. You can't help them. The third is your mouth opening, and that one is a choice. All of the integrity is in that choice.
Then I put a price tag on defensiveness, drawing on four places that each solved the same problem from a different direction: a marriage lab, an airline cockpit, a hospital system, and a factory floor. And I lay out what to do instead, from finding the kernel of truth to what the research on confession and secrecy says about the cost of carrying a shield you built when you were nine years old.
If you're a betrayed partner listening in, this is a window into why his defensiveness fires the way it does, and what it looks like when a man finally retires it.

S2 E25 | Does the Minwalla Model Silence Men?
2026/07/13
Men come into this work and land on the same conclusion: the model wants them gone. In this episode I take that complaint seriously, and then I take it apart.
Everything here rests on one condition. Active deception has ended. If you're still holding one secret, one withheld detail, this episode isn't for you yet. You don't have a voice problem. You have an integrity problem, and the only assignment right now is telling her the truth.
For the men past that line, I put four familiar complaints on the table, separate the one that's just the work operating correctly from the three that carry a real grievance, and lay out what to actually do with your voice. Four integrity moves, in order. The five questions to run in your head before you speak. Six sentences that carry integrity, and eight more that only wear its clothes. And the honest answer to the question every man is holding onto: when do I get my voice back?
If you're a betrayed partner listening in, this may help you understand what recovery asks of him, and why his questions about "having a voice" show up the way they do.

S2 E24 | The Recovery Wall - What Happens When Fear No Longer Drives Change
2026/07/06
After exposure or disclosure, a lot of men change fast. They stop the behavior. They go to therapy. They check in constantly. And from the outside, it looks like recovery.
Then the crisis fades. And somewhere between six months and two years, many men hit the wall.
In this episode, Roy unpacks what he calls the "recovery wall" — the point where fear-driven change begins to evaporate, and what was (or wasn't) built underneath it starts to show. He walks through four distinct versions of the wall, explains why fear is a powerful on-ramp but a terrible fuel source for lasting integrity, and describes what authentic change actually looks like when fear is no longer doing the heavy lifting.
For partners: this episode may name something you haven't been able to say out loud — that you've watched him do everything right, but you're still quietly bracing for the day the effort runs out.
For men: the question isn't whether your fear will fade. It will. The question is what you're building while it's still doing the work.
In this episode:
00:00 Introduction
01:00 What the recovery wall looks like and why it's easy to miss
04:30 Why fear is a legitimate starting point and what it's actually good at
07:00 Fear fools everyone, including the partner and the therapist
09:00 Fear has an expiration date — it's designed to switch off
11:00 The Three I's: where fear can reach and where it cannot
13:00 The entitlement engine and why fear doesn't turn it off
15:00 Four versions of the wall: plateau, slow reversal, resentment, relapse
21:00 What holds when fear is gone
22:00 From compliance to congruence — integrity as a value, not a rule
23:30 The test: would his integrity survive if she left tomorrow?
26:00 For partners — you are not responsible for being his consequence forever
29:00 For men — the fear is scaffolding, not the building

S2 E23 | Why Empathy Training So Often Fails for Betrayers
2026/06/29
After discovery, a lot of men start saying all the right things, and they say them fast. He tells her he understands how badly he hurt her. He cries. He apologizes for hours. And she doesn't feel any better. Sometimes she feels worse. Her body is not buying it, even when everyone around her says he's finally doing the work.
This episode is about that gap. The distance between the empathetic words a man produces and the alarm his partner's nervous system keeps sounding.
Most of the advice out there tells men to get better at empathy, to validate and reflect her feelings back, to run scripts like acknowledge, validate, reassure. I make close to the opposite case. Empathy taught too early, before a man has actually stopped the harm and become fully honest, is one of the most reliable ways recovery goes fake. I get into why empathy gets reached for first, why performed empathy becomes pseudo-recovery, and what it does to a betrayed partner's body once her own alarm has been overruled for years. Then I lay out the order this work actually follows, integrity first, then impact, then integration, and what real earned empathy looks like when it finally shows up.
If you're a betrayed partner and your body has been telling you something is still off even while the words sound good, this one is for you too.

S2 E22 | (Listener Question) When You're Innocent and She Doesn't Believe You
2026/06/22
A listener wrote in with a question a lot of men in recovery are sitting with. He's about a year past discovery, working on his integrity, and honest enough to admit he still shades the truth sometimes in the moment. His question: what do you do when your partner accuses you of something you genuinely did not do, and how do you say no without getting defensive or setting off another trigger?
Roy takes that question apart with care. He explains why trying to win the moment is the wrong goal, even when you're innocent, and why the very skill of being convincing is the same skill that built the secret basement and wore down your partner's ability to trust her own read on reality. Then he gets practical: how to answer the fear underneath the question, how to keep your no short and stay in the discomfort, and what proactive transparency asks of you over the long haul.

S2 E21 | The Five Systems of Integrity Abuse
2026/06/14
Most men assume the lying stops once they get caught, because there is nothing left to hide. That is almost never what happens. The same instrument that built the secret sexual life keeps working long after exposure. It just changes jobs.
In this episode, Roy walks through a hard truth about deceptive sexuality: the primary tool was never the burner phone or the deleted history. It was the voice. The sex was the secret. The voice was the abuse.
Dr. Minwalla's catalog lists more than sixty integrity abuse behaviors. Handed that list, most men audit it like a tax form, find the three or four items they did not do, and use them to acquit themselves of the rest. So at Joy Recovery we organize the catalog into Five Systems, five jobs the manipulation is doing, each one built to keep the basement shut and to keep her doubting her own mind:
1. Reality Denial, erasing the event
2. Responsibility Evasion, relocating the fault
3. Narrative Control, rewriting the story
4. Disclosure Manipulation, rationing the truth
5. Accountability Shutdown, closing the door
For each system Roy names what it sounds like, what it is protecting, what it does to her, and what it costs you to put it down. He closes with the difference between sobriety and integrity, why pseudo-recovery is the real trap, and a set of questions for the men to sit with this week.
This episode is aimed mainly at the men. Roy also speaks directly to the partners who listen, from inside the limits of someone who has not been in their shoes, to confirm that the pattern they saw was real and had a strategy behind it.
