Description

Welcome to The Healing Childhood Trauma Podcast! This is the podcast for anyone still carrying the weight of past wounds and trauma experienced in childhood and adolescence. Childhood trauma leaves deep imprints - shaping our beliefs, relationships, sense of self, and even the way our nervous system responds to life today. Many traditional therapy models focus on only one dimension of our experience and often stay at the level of day-to-day problems. Yet for trauma to truly heal, we often need a more holistic approach - one that goes deeper, into the nervous system and the early childhood wounds that shaped how we learned to stay safe and connected. Hosted by Alec Williams, a psychotherapist, researcher, group facilitator, and childhood & relational trauma specialist based in London, each episode focuses on a specific challenge that childhood trauma can create - exploring what it is, why it develops, and what you can do to begin healing.

How to Break Free from the Inner Critic Your Childhood Created (Ep 45)
2026/09/29
In this episode of the Healing Childhood Trauma podcast, we’re exploring how to break free from the inner critic childhood trauma may have created - that voice telling you you’re not good enough, you’ve messed up, or that everyone else is doing better than you. For many people, a harsh inner critic has its roots in childhood. Criticism, rejection, shame, emotional neglect or other difficult experiences can shape the way we learn to speak to ourselves - and sometimes, that critical voice may even have developed as an attempt to protect us. You'll be walked through three practical steps to help you understand where your inner critic came from, notice it without automatically believing what it says, and begin developing a different relationship with this part of yourself. Because healing isn’t necessarily about getting rid of your inner critic completely. It’s about turning down the volume, loosening its grip, and helping it move out of the driver’s seat - so you can live with greater confidence, self-worth and freedom. _________________________________ 💌 Join the mailing list, where each week we dig deep into a topic not covered here and you’ll have first access to everything new. 🌐 Visit my website for info about working with me one-to-one or in groups: www.alecwilliamstherapy.co.uk ✉️ Get in touch: Contact - Alec Williams Therapy

You’ll also learn three ways to begin identifying your own childhood wounds today. My Childhood Is in the Past - Why Dig It All Up? (Ep 43)
2026/09/15
In this episode of the Healing Childhood Trauma podcast, we’re exploring a question that comes up again and again in the healing process: do you really need to dig up your childhood in order to heal? If something from your past is still affecting you today, it can seem obvious that understanding what happened might help. But is revisiting painful childhood experiences always beneficial? Could talking about trauma before you’re ready sometimes make things worse? And is it possible to heal without going back into your past at all? We explore both sides of this debate, including how trauma therapy has evolved, why safety and stabilisation can be so important, and what can happen when painful experiences are opened up without the right support in place. We’ll also look at why safely exploring childhood trauma and childhood wounds can be such a powerful part of trauma healing - helping you connect the dots between your past and present, better understand where your patterns may have come from, develop greater self-compassion, and recognise how the effects of childhood trauma may still be showing up in your life today.
Your Roadmap for Healing Childhood Trauma in 2026 (Ep 42)
2026/09/08
In this episode of The Healing Childhood Trauma Podcast, you’ll be given a roadmap for how you can most effectively heal childhood trauma in 2026 - understanding where it may still be showing up in your adult life and where your healing might need to go next. We explore six key areas of healing: your nervous system and body, core beliefs, relationship with yourself, identity, core wounds and unmet needs, and relationships and attachment. If you’ve already tried therapy, nervous system regulation, inner child work or other approaches but still feel that something hasn’t quite shifted, this episode will help you step back, look at the bigger picture and think about your next steps. Rather than searching for one perfect way to heal, you’ll come away with a clearer framework for understanding childhood trauma healing - and some practical first steps for deciding where to focus next.
Can You Develop Secure Attachment as an Adult After Childhood Trauma? (Ep 41)
2026/09/01
In this episode of The Healing Childhood Trauma Podcast, we explore whether it’s possible to develop secure attachment as an adult, particularly if childhood trauma meant that safety, consistency, and trust weren’t always present in your earliest relationships. Childhood experiences can shape the expectations we carry into adult relationships. You might fear abandonment, struggle to trust other people, become anxious when someone pulls away, or find yourself creating distance when closeness begins to feel uncomfortable. But does having an anxious, avoidant, or otherwise insecure attachment style mean relationships will always feel this way? By the end of this episode, you’ll have a better understanding of: What secure attachment can look and feel like in adult relationshipsHow childhood trauma and attachment wounds can influence adult relationshipsWhether anxious, avoidant, and insecure attachment styles can change over timeWhat research tells us about developing greater attachment security in adulthoodA simple healing step to help you identify and begin questioning an old relational expectation you may still be carrying from childhood_________________________________ 💌 Join the mailing list, where each week we dig deep into a topic not covered here and you’ll have first access to everything new. 🌐 Visit my website for info about working with me one-to-one or in groups: www.alecwilliamstherapy.co.uk ✉️ Get in touch: Contact - Alec Williams Therapy
Can You Heal Childhood Trauma Without Forgiving? (Ep 40)
2026/08/25
Can you heal childhood trauma without forgiving the people who hurt you? In this episode of The Healing Childhood Trauma Podcast, we explore whether forgiveness is actually necessary for childhood trauma healing. We look at why forgiveness can feel deeply freeing for some people, why allowing anger and resentment may sometimes play an important role in trauma healing, and whether it’s possible to recover from childhood wounds without ever forgiving the person responsible. We’ll explore the difference between forgiveness, acceptance and reconciliation, why letting go doesn’t necessarily mean saying what happened was okay, and how boundaries, grief, anger and self-compassion can for some, all form part of the healing process. By the end of this episode, you'll be able to: Understand the difference between forgiveness, acceptance and reconciliation Consider whether you can let go and move forward without forgiving Reflect on what forgiveness - or choosing not to forgive - means for your own healing process Explore what it might mean to become free from the past without minimising what happened. If you’re working through the effects of childhood trauma in adulthood and wondering whether you need to forgive in order to move forward, this episode is for you.
The Journey Back to Yourself | Trauma, Authenticity & Healing (Ep 39)
2026/08/18
What if healing from childhood trauma isn’t about becoming a new and improved version of yourself, but finding your way back to who you were all along? Childhood trauma can shape the way we think, feel and behave. Over time, protective responses such as people-pleasing, perfectionism or hiding our needs can become so familiar that we may begin to lose touch with parts of our natural selves. In this episode of the Healing Childhood Trauma Podcast, we explore how early trauma can affect our identity, why authentic parts of ourselves can get pushed into the background, and how we can allow those parts to gradually emerge again. We’ll explore ideas from trauma therapy around the True Self, authenticity and attachment, and look at what childhood trauma healing can mean in practice. Because perhaps healing isn’t always about becoming someone different. Sometimes, it’s about creating the conditions to become more fully yourself. _________________________________ 🌐 Visit my website: www.alecwilliamstherapy.co.uk ✉️ Get in touch: Contact - Alec Williams Therapy
