Portuguese Etiquette 101: Greetings, Kisses, Tipping, Dress Codes, & Patience
2026/09/20
Moving to Portugal or living in Portugal already? Understanding Portuguese etiquette, Portuguese culture, and local customs can make a huge difference to how quickly you feel at home, build relationships, and integrate into Portuguese life.
Many newcomers discover that successfully settling in Portugal involves more than finding a home or completing paperwork. From knowing when to say bom dia and com licença to understanding dining customs, social etiquette, and Portugal's relaxed pace of life, these cultural insights can help you navigate everyday situations with confidence.
Developing even a basic knowledge of European Portuguese can also make a real difference. Learning the language with a native Portuguese teacher helps you understand not only the words themselves, but also the cultural context behind everyday interactions, helping you connect more naturally with local people and communities.

📝 EPISODE SUMMARY
In this episode, Filomena and the host discuss key areas of Portuguese etiquette, starting with the importance of greeting people, especially in villages and small towns, and using Portuguese phrases like "olá," "bom dia," and "com licença," including on phone calls before hanging up.
They explain common greeting customs such as handshakes in formal or business settings and the typical two-cheek kiss (often real kisses in rural areas and more air-kiss style in places like Cascais).
They cover dining etiquette, including not rushing meals, understanding that bread, olives, and cheese brought to the table may be charged unless refused, and how tipping is usually done by rounding up a few euros.
They also address dress expectations away from the beach and in churches, emphasise adapting to Portugal's slower pace and relaxed punctuality, and encourage learning basic Portuguese rather than speaking Spanish in Portugal.

Is This Lisbon’s Best Park? History, Flags & Dining at Eleven
2026/09/13
Every week, we bring our community together to explore life in Portugal, with practical information, expert updates and conversations covering everything from moving to Portugal, visas and property to Portuguese culture, history and everyday life. This recording takes a different look at the country through photography, with a visit to Lisbon’s Jardim Amália Rodrigues and the fascinating story behind Portugal’s national flag.
•••••
After a failed first recording, Carl and photographer-writer Jose Cruz re-record an Expats Portugal segment where Jose shares photos and history from Lisbon’s Jardim Amália Rodrigues above Parque Eduardo VII. He explains the symbolism and adoption of Portugal’s national flag (adopted June 30, 1911 after the 1910 revolution), including the meanings of the colors, the quinas, and the castles, and describes how a commission of artists, a journalist, and military leaders designed it. Jose also covers the garden’s origins, design, views to the Tejo, amphitheater, lake and cafe, and mentions dog-friendly scenes he photographed. He highlights dining options from the cafe to the Michelin-starred restaurant Eleven, including menu prices. Carl adds the giant flag’s size and flagpole height and invites Jose back next year.
Explore the history of Jardim Amália Rodrigues and the symbolism behind Portugal's national flag in this visual tour of Lisbon.
Join photographer Jose Cruz as he recounts the origins of one of Lisbon's most iconic green spaces, located just above Parque Eduardo VII. Beyond the garden's design, amphitheater, and stunning views of the Tejo, this presentation breaks down the history of Portugal's national flag, detailing how the colors and symbols were chosen following the 1910 revolution. It is a look at local landmarks through a historical lens.
Whether you are planning a visit or interested in Portuguese culture, this guide also covers dining options in the area. From casual cafe stops to the fine dining experience at the Michelin-starred restaurant Eleven, you will get a sense of the local atmosphere and practical details for your next trip to the city. See the garden's Botero sculpture and learn flag facts that reveal the deeper meaning behind national symbols.

Portugal Golden Visa 2026 Update: Funds, Tax Residency, Self-Directed IRAs & Crypto Options
2026/08/02
What are the current Portugal Golden Visa investment options in 2026, and could a US Self-Directed IRA (SIDRA) or cryptocurrency holdings potentially be used to fund a qualifying investment?
In this webinar, we explore the latest Portugal Golden Visa rules following the end of the real estate investment route, including qualifying investment funds, company investment and cultural donations. We also discuss how eligible US investors may potentially use a Self-Directed IRA (SDIRA) or other retirement funds to invest in a qualifying Portuguese Golden Visa fund, subject to appropriate US legal and tax advice, and how cryptocurrency holdings may potentially be converted into euros for an eligible fund investment, subject to banking and compliance requirements.
The Portugal Golden Visa remains a flexible route to Portuguese residency for eligible investors, with a minimum stay requirement of just seven days per year. Unlike residency routes such as the D7 and D8, it may allow investors to maintain Portuguese residency without relocating permanently or automatically becoming Portuguese tax residents, while also creating opportunities for eligible family members and providing a potential pathway towards Portuguese citizenship.
Whether you are exploring Portugal residency by investment, considering a future move to Portugal, looking at Portugal Golden Visa funds, or interested in how retirement accounts and digital assets may fit into a wider international investment strategy, this webinar provides an up-to-date overview of the options and important considerations involved.

Discover Tomar, Portugal: Knights Templar History, Hidden Gems & Local Traditions (with Sara Cruz)
This episode is a local’s guide to Tomar in central Portugal, led virtually by Sara Cruz of Go Walks Portugal, focusing on the town’s history, culture, and everyday life. The discussion highlights Tomar’s setting on the River Nabão and its major landmarks, especially the UNESCO-listed Convent of Christ and its Rotunda, along with Praça da República, Parque do Mochão, and Portugal’s oldest synagogue reflecting Tomar’s Jewish heritage. Sara emphasizes exploring lesser-known details, including remnants of former convent architecture and the 17th-century aqueduct, which is accessible but requires caution.
The conversation also covers unconventional stops like a ceramics and tile workshop, the Matchbox Museum, Café Paraíso, and key events such as the four-year Festa dos Tabuleiros and annual Knights Templar historical recreations. Nearby, the Almourol Castle on the Tagus is recommended, with notes on boat access and its later propaganda use, plus suggestions for multi-day visits including Vila Nova da Barquinha and Dornes.

Portugal Property Costs Explained: New IMT Rules, Taxes, FX Transfers & Buying Mistakes to Avoid
This Expats Portugal session with lawyer Daniel Reis (Reis & Pellicano) and Sarah Davey (SpartanFX) explains the real costs of buying and owning property in Portugal, focusing on the new IMT rules: non-tax residents buying below €1.15M face a 7.5% acquisition tax rate, but those who become Portuguese tax residents within two years can reclaim the excess paid. They outline IMT and stamp duty (IS) examples, when and how taxes are paid at the deed, and practical issues like Multibanco limits and bank transfer caps, stressing advance planning for money flows and foreign exchange volatility. Daniel covers closing costs, mortgage risks and the need for a banking/evaluation clause in the CPCV, IMI annual tax and pro-rata year-end adjustments, capital gains taxation and deductions, reinvestment relief (including EU-wide), inheritance basics, and common mistakes such as skipping due diligence and not keeping renovation invoices.

Portugal has one of Europe's most extensive public charging networks, but for many newcomers the system can seem confusing at first. How does charging actually work? Why can prices vary so much between charging stations? Do you need a Portuguese bank account or fiscal number? Is owning an EV practical if you live in an apartment? And are electric vehicles really cheaper to run than petrol or diesel cars?
In Part 1 of this two-part webinar, we're joined by Luis from the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACP), who explains the fundamentals of EV ownership in Portugal and shares practical advice to help you better understand the country's unique charging network and the costs involved.
Whether you're considering importing your current electric vehicle, buying one after moving to Portugal, or simply want to understand how the system works before making a decision, this session provides clear, practical information to help you get started.

Weekly Grocery Shopping in Portugal: Supermarkets, Costs, and Food Tips with Astrid
Astrid and the Expats Portugal hosts revisit a “supermarket tour” webinar about grocery shopping and settling in Portugal, outlining major chains (Continente, Pingo Doce, Auchan, Aldi, Lidl, Intermarché, Leclerc, and Mercadona), what each is best for (e.g., Auchan’s international aisle, Lidl bakery, Aldi specials), and the need to shop multiple stores.
They provide monthly grocery budget estimates (€150–€200 per person, €300–€500 per couple, €500–€900 for families) and discuss common newcomer surprises such as different meat cuts, widespread soup consumption, seasonal produce, UHT milk dominance, fresh fish counters, and in-store bakeries.
Astrid shares Portuguese foods to try, decodes common label terms (including lactose/gluten/sugar-free and meat/fish prep words), gives sample prices across categories, notes growing vegan/vegetarian options, explains loyalty cards and fuel-linked discounts, and answers questions about organic options, farmers’ markets, and using a NIF at checkout.
