55. What I Ate (and Drank) on Vacation: A Nutrition Coach’s Honest Debrief
2026/10/20
I just got back from a restful 20th anniversary trip to Baja California with my husband, Steve. In this episode I walk you through exactly how I used the same tools I teach my clients, and I’m being honest about where I failed.
You’ll hear:
Why I chose not to diet before the trip, even at the higher end of my happy weightHow I used body image flexibility and defusion when I didn't like how my body looked in the full-length mirror in our hotel roomHow I used the pleasure scale and “the wanting matching the liking” to plan one special anniversary dinner and eat balanced the rest of the time (hello, fresh grilled fish tacos and ceviche)The “future self” exercise that gave me permission to nap every day without guiltAnd my biggest failure on the trip...This episode is for you if you want to enjoy vacation, eat with flexibility and still treat your body like it matters, without the all-or-nothing swing. Failing well is a skill, and it can be learned.
Mentioned in this episode: Episode 26, “Liking Your Body on Vacation, Part One.”

54. REWIND: Your Inner Critic Is Not Your Enemy: How to Coexist with that Nasty Voice Inside of Your Head

While I’m away on vacation (and enjoying a head cold without a voice), please enjoy this replay of one of my most popular episodes, all about your inner critic.
You know the voice. It pipes up after a “bad” meal, when you catch your reflection, or when you’re getting dressed, and it sounds a lot like the truth. In this episode, I explain where that harsh inner voice comes from, why it’s actually trying to protect you, and why criticizing yourself into change almost never works. Drawing on compassion-focused approaches to behavior change, I share how to recognize your critic when it shows up, separate its voice from your own, and start responding with a kinder, steadier inner coach. This isn’t about lowering your standards. It’s about creating the conditions where real, lasting change becomes possible.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re your own worst enemy with food or your body, this one’s for you.

"Motivation is garbage, just be disciplined." You've heard it from the fitness crowd. But that's not how behavior works. Your thoughts create your emotions, and your emotions drive your actions. That means the way you feel about eating well matters a lot.
In this episode, I explain why your brain defaults to temptation. It wants the seven cookies today and doesn't care about fat loss a few months from now. Then I share the brain tool that helps you zoom out and choose differently: the Dreamy Why.

If you're the person who crushes every goal at work, runs the household like a well-oiled machine, and still can't figure out why food feels like a constant fight, this episode is for you.
I'm digging into why high achievers struggle with eating well. It usually isn't a lack of knowledge. It's that the same suffering-equals-success mindset behind your career backfires when it comes to your body. I talk about why strict diets and SMART-goal-style fat loss lead to the restrict-and-rebound cycle. I also share the two belief shifts that make lasting change possible.
In this episode:
Why food is simple, people are complicated, and fat loss is brain work, not food workThe "executive eating pattern"Why timelines, goal weights, and "after photos" set you up for the wrong mindsetShifting your motivation from threat to caretaking, so it's something you can keep doing foreverHappy Eating 💋

Feel out of control with food while thriving in every other area of your life? You might be an insecure overachiever.
In this episode, Aimee explores how the same personality traits that drive high achievement:(perfectionism, people-pleasing, external validation-seeking, and intolerance for uncertainty) wire your brain for food noise and obsessive eating patterns. She shares her own chronic pain story and reveals why willpower never worked for her (and probably won't for you either).

And I'd love to hear from you!
We all have a story about the scale. For some of us that number can end a day before it's begun, decide whether we eat, or convince us we've failed when every other metric says we're winning. This week I want to talk about what's really going on when the scale has that much power over us, because I promise it isn't about the number.
I get into why "just stop weighing yourself if it upsets you" is hiding from the problem instead of solving it, why knowing all about water retention still doesn't stop the spiral, and how your brain quietly turned a goal weight into a stand-in for safety. Then I walk you through the actual brain work that loosens the grip that number has on you.
If the scale has ever made you cry, refused to live in your house, or ruined a doctor's appointment, this one's for you.

And I'd love to hear from you!
Calories have a terrible reputation, and it's costing us. This week, I make the case that calories deserve a PR revamp: they're not the enemy, they're your body's life force. I'll get into why almost everyone under-counts what they eat, why that's a design feature of being human rather than a personal failing, and why it's actually good news if fat loss comes down to calories and not your hormones. Compassion-first, shame-free, and backed by the research.
The research (sources)

(2002) — registered dietitians under-reported by 223 cal/day; non-experts by 429 cal/day. J Am Diet Assoc. https://www.jandonline.org/article/S0002-8223(02)90316-0/abstractBajunaid et al. This episode talks about calories directly, including the small bites and tastes that add up over a day. It's meant to take the fear out of the subject, not add to it. But if numbers are a tender spot for you right now, take what serves you and leave the rest.

And I'd love to hear from you!
You dominate everything else in your life: your career, your finances, your workouts.
So why does food feel like the one place your willpower goes to die?
This episode unpacks the sentence I hear more than any other: "I know what to do, I just can't do it."
Spoiler: it's not a discipline problem, and there's nothing wrong with you.
I get into why fear and shame spark the kind of motivation that burns hot and dies in three days, the difference between extrinsic and high-quality intrinsic motivation, and a field of study most people have never heard of that lets you create drive on purpose instead of waiting around for it to show up.
I walk through "promotional" tools (yes, daydreaming counts), the brain glitch that makes your goals uninteresting when faced with temptation, and the two big questions that help you discover your Deep Why.
If your motivation keeps ghosting you like a bad-boy crush, this one's for you.

In this episode of Body Like You, I'm talking about self-trust, and why the way most of us define it is quietly keeping us stuck in the yo-yo cycle with food and fat loss.
I break down why your brain treats the fear of fat gain and the disappointment of past dieting as a survival threat, and how that fear fuels self-sabotage. Because if failure feels inevitable, you get to quit before you can be hurt again.
Then I reframe what self-trust actually is.
This episode is for anyone caught in yo-yo dieting, perfectionism, all-or-nothing thinking, or the shame that lands the second you're not perfect with food. If you've been afraid to even start because you're sure you'll mess it up, I hope this gives you a big exhale. Happy eating!

"It's impossible for normal people to hit 100 grams of protein."
"Protein's overrated. You only need 50 or 60 grams."
I've been hearing these stories everywhere lately, and in this episode I lovingly call them what they are: horseshit. The truth is it has never been easier in human history to eat enough protein. I cover why it matters so much (muscle, satiety, blood sugar, aging with strength), just how simple it actually is to get enough.
And then the part nobody else talks about: the honest, slightly uncomfortable things you might have to change to make it happen. This one will either shift how you think about it completely, or gently piss you off. Maybe both.
45. Why "I Already Blew It" Feels So True: 5 Fat Loss Brain Glitches

And I'd love to hear from you!
You mess up one meal and think, "Well, I've already blown it, so it doesn't matter what I eat now." It feels completely true in the moment, and it's a lie your brain tells you.
In this episode of Body Like You, I'm walking through my top five brain glitches: the irrational moves that feel totally reasonable when you're in them but quietly keep you stuck in fat loss. A brain glitch is when your brain hands you a thought that feels 100% true and talks you straight into the exact behavior that sabotages you.
We'll cover the "I already blew it" spiral, why the scale finally dropping makes you want to throw a party (and blow it), the irrational anger when the scale goes up, the crash-diet urge that hits when nothing in your closet fits, and the "I'll just burn it off at the gym" trap.
If you struggle with all-or-nothing thinking, emotional eating, yo-yo dieting, body shame, or staying consistent with fat loss when life gets messy, this one's for you.
Want to go deeper? I mention two companion episodes in here — Episode 37, Why Exercising to Burn Calories Keeps You Stuck, and Episode 44, Debriefing: The Brain Tool That Ends the Binge Restrict Cycle.

Enjoying the podcast? I'd love to hear from you!
Ever ended a weekend of overeating by promising you'll "start over on Monday"? In this episode of Body Like You, I teach debriefing, the brain tool that breaks the restrict-binge cycle without shame. You'll learn why "fix-it mode" keeps you stuck in yo-yo dieting and emotional eating, how undereating during the day drives nighttime overeating, and how to look back at food mistakes with curiosity instead of self-blame. If you struggle with emotional eating, binge eating, all-or-nothing thinking, or staying consistent with fat loss, this one's for you.
43. Obstacle Prediction: How to Solve Food Problems Before They Happen

And I'd love to hear from you!
In this episode of Body Like You, I'm teaching one of the simplest and most powerful brain tools I know: obstacle prediction. It's something I use in my own eating and work on with every client, and it's the difference between white-knuckling your way through the week and calmly solving food problems before they ever happen.
I start with why perfectionism is such a miscalculation with food, and why eating well and fat loss have far more to do with caretaking than achieving. Then I walk through obstacle prediction itself: how to run the tape forward and use your rational brain before you're hungry, tired, and emotional. I break down the three categories of obstacles I see get in people's way over and over: your own thoughts and emotions (including the fear of fat gain), logistical obstacles, and people pleasing.
If you struggle with emotional eating, nighttime overeating, perfectionism, all-or-nothing thinking, or staying on track with fat loss when life gets busy, this episode will help you stop being ambushed by the same obstacles and start solving them in advance, without shame.
Next week we'll cover the flip side of this tool: debriefing.
Happy eating!
42. How to Be A C Student: Why Perfectionists Don't Lose Weight

And I'd love to hear from you!
If you've ever gone all-in on a diet, nailed it for two weeks, then quit the second you slipped, this episode explains why.
I tell the story of the engineering weed-out class that nearly broke me (and kicked off a five-year emotional eating habit) and use it to unpack the real reason perfectionists struggle with fat loss: you can't tolerate being a beginner. All-or-nothing thinking, the need to make an "A" on every attempt, and the shame that lands the moment you're not perfect are exactly what trap you in the start-over cycle.
I'll show you why self-compassion is the missing skill that makes weight loss actually stick, and why letting yourself be a "C student" with food might be the kindest, most effective thing you ever do for your body.
This one's for anyone who's successful everywhere except their relationship with food and the way they feel in their body.
41. Radical Responsibility for Feeding Yourself

And I'd love to hear from you!
In this episode of Body Like You, I’m talking about what I call radical responsibility for feeding yourself: the decision to stop letting busy schedules, restaurants, family preferences, social pressure, and last-minute hunger make your food choices for you.
I share how failing to plan my meals once left me relying on drive-throughs and restaurant food multiple times a day, and how learning to think about food in advance helped me lose 80 pounds of body fat and maintain that loss.
You’ll learn six practical principles for taking greater ownership of your nutrition, including packing simple meals when you leave home, speaking up at restaurants, navigating other people’s opinions, and learning from imperfect eating decisions without shame or blame.
This isn’t about perfect meal prep, rigid dieting, or never eating for pleasure. It’s about building self-trust, planning for predictable hunger, and treating feeding yourself as an essential form of body care.
If you struggle with yo-yo dieting, emotional eating, inconsistent meal planning, frequent takeout, or staying on track with your fat loss goals when life gets busy, this episode will help you stop feeling powerless and start creating a nutrition routine that works in real life.
