Galway setback as the title race tightens
2026/10/19
Episode 60 - Galway setback as the title race tightens
Shamrock Rovers suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat away to Galway United on Friday night, leaving the Hoops with plenty to think about as the title race reaches its decisive stages.
On Episode 60 of The Milltown Way, Ryan Brennan and Adam Casey look back on the defeat at Eamonn Deacy Park, assess where Rovers fell short and discuss what the result means with just two league games remaining. We also consider the concerns raised by supporters and what Rovers need to show in response.
The conversation then turns to the wider title race, with Monday night's meeting between Derry City and St Patrick's Athletic potentially having a significant impact on the final standings. We discuss the possible implications for Rovers, how the other contenders could influence the run-in and why the Hoops must focus on taking care of their own results.
Finally, we look ahead to Friday night's trip to face Sligo Rovers. Sligo may have already been relegated, but their 1-1 draw with Dundalk shows they won't necessarily be an easy opponent. We discuss the challenge Rovers could face, the importance of approaching the game with the right mentality and what a response to the Galway defeat needs to look like.
With the title still to be decided and every point carrying enormous importance, there's plenty to discuss.

Six clear after a fiery derby
2026/10/13
On this episode, Ryan Brennan and Adam Casey look back on a massive night at Tallaght Stadium as Shamrock Rovers beat Bohemians 2-1 in a crucial Dublin derby.
John McGovern opened the scoring before Bohs equalised in the second half, but Dylan Watts delivered the decisive goal to secure all three points for Rovers. The victory puts the Hoops six points clear at the top of the Premier Division with five games remaining, giving them a significant advantage in the title race.
We break down the key moments, the performances that made the difference and what the result means as the season approaches its conclusion.
We then turn our attention to the full-time scenes at Tallaght Stadium. Celebrations in front of the supporters were followed by confrontations involving players and staff from both sides. We discuss what happened, the emotions surrounding such a significant derby and where the line should be drawn when the final whistle blows.
Finally, we look ahead to Friday night's trip to face Galway United. With the title race heating up and every point becoming increasingly important, we discuss the challenge Rovers will face away from home and what they need to do to maintain their advantage at the top.Ā

Rovers roll on as Bohs await
2026/10/09
On this episode, Ryan Brennan and Adam Casey look back on Shamrock Rovers' 3-1 win over Drogheda United at Tallaght Stadium.
John McGovern scored twice, with Graham Burke also on the scoresheet, as Rovers picked up another important three points in the Premier Division. We discuss the key moments from the game, the standout performances, and what the result means as the title race approaches its conclusion.
We then turn our attention to the Republic of Ireland Under-21s, who produced a memorable 3-1 victory over England at Turner's Cross to secure a place in the play-offs for the 2027 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
Ireland came from behind to beat the reigning European champions, with Tommy Lonergan scoring twice and Conor McManus also finding the net. Michael Noonan came off the bench in the 82nd minute, playing the final eight minutes, while Adam Brennan was not in the matchday squad.
We look back on a huge result for Jim Crawford's side, the turnaround in their qualifying campaign and what the victory could mean for the young players involved. We also look ahead to Friday's play-off draw, with Ireland among eight nations competing for the four remaining places at next summer's finals. The two-legged play-offs are scheduled for November.
Finally, we look ahead to Rovers' next challenge as they prepare to face Bohemians. With the title race entering a decisive stage, we discuss the threat Bohs pose, the importance of the fixture, and what Rovers need to do to maintain the top.
The Rovers return with An Leanaimid
2026/10/05
Episode 57 - The Rovers return with An Leanaimid
On this episode, Ryan Brennan and Adam Casey are joined by Daniel from An Leanaimid, the Irish-language League of Ireland podcast.
We start by getting to know Daniel and finding out more about An Leanaimid. We discuss how the podcast came about, why Daniel decided to cover the League of Ireland through Irish, what it is like creating football content at such a young age and how the project has developed.
We also discuss the wider League of Ireland podcast and media landscape, the appeal of covering Irish football in the Irish language and what independent creators can bring to the game.
We then turn our attention to the latest news around Shamrock Rovers, including Michael Noonan's confirmed move to Nottingham Forest. We discuss what the move means for the young forward, his development at Rovers and what it says about the opportunities available to young League of Ireland players.
We also look at the latest international involvement for Rovers players, including Adam Brennan, Michael Noonan and Roberto Lopes, and discuss the wider question of League of Ireland representation at international level.
Finally, we look ahead to Rovers' return to Tallaght Stadium to face Drogheda United in the Premier Division.
We look at Drogheda's recent form, their record against Rovers this season, the players who could pose a threat and what Rovers need to do to get the three points.

Looking beyond the international break
2026/09/28
Episode 56 - Looking beyond the international break
In this episode, Ryan Brennan and Adam Casey look at several stories from around Shamrock Rovers during the international break.
We start with the Rovers players away on international duty, including Adam Brennan and Michael Noonan with the Ireland U21s and Roberto Lopes with Cape Verde. We discuss their involvement, the pathway from Shamrock Rovers and the wider question of Rovers and League of Ireland representation at international level.
We then turn our attention to the club's academy and the development of young players.
Michael Noonan's reported move to Nottingham Forest is discussed alongside the financial implications of training compensation and the significant difference between that and the fee Rovers had previously agreed with Hoffenheim.
We also discuss Jayden Marshall's move to Como 1907 and what his transfer says about the opportunities available to young Irish players in Europe, particularly in the context of the restrictions on moving to English clubs before the age of 18.
That leads into a broader discussion about Rovers' academy pathway, player development and whether the club is doing enough to maximise both the sporting and commercial value of the players it produces.
We then discuss Stephen Bradley and the recent reports linking him with the vacant Hibernian job. Hibs ultimately appointed a different manager, but the interest gives us a chance to look at Bradley's reputation outside Tallaght and what it says about how he is viewed in the wider game. Finally, we remember former Rovers defender Jacko McDonagh, who passed away at 64. Jacko was a key figure of the Milltown era and part of the Shamrock Rovers side that won the first two titles of the famous four-in-a-row.
The final few minutes of the episode are dedicated to Jacko, with messages from George Kelly and Pat Byrne sharing their memories of him.Ā

Rovers return to winning ways
2026/09/21
Episode 55 - Rovers return to winning ways
On this episode, Ryan Brennan and Adam Casey look back on Rovers' 3-2 win over Waterford at Tallaght Stadium.
Rovers had to come from behind twice to claim all three points, with John McGovern scoring twice after coming off the bench to complete the turnaround. We look back at the key moments from the game and what the result means as Rovers head into the international break.
We then discuss Michael Noonan, with the young forward appearing set for a move to Nottingham Forest in January. We look at the reported move, what it could mean for Noonan's development and the situation from Rovers' perspective.
Finally, we turn our attention to the Republic of Ireland's senior squad and the absence of Shamrock Rovers and League of Ireland players.
Should there be Rovers or League of Ireland representation in the senior squad?
Adam Brennan and Michael Noonan have both been included in the Ireland U21 squad for their European Championship qualifiers, giving us the chance to discuss the next generation coming through and the pathway from the League of Ireland to international football.

Episode 54 - Pats put Rovers to the sword as the title race tightens
Shamrock Rovers suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat away to St Patrick's Athletic on Friday night, with the result having major implications at the top of the League of Ireland Premier Division.
On Episode 54 of The Milltown Way, Ryan Brennan and Adam Casey look back on a frustrating night at Richmond Park and assess a performance that leaves Rovers with plenty to think about.
We discuss the key moments from the game, where Rovers fell short and what the defeat means for the title race with just seven league games remaining.
The conversation then turns to the growing questions around Stephen Bradley. After a difficult period for Rovers, is the pressure on the manager now justified? What responsibility does Bradley carry for the team's recent performances, and what can he realistically change? We look at the tactical, squad and performance issues facing Rovers and consider whether the problems are temporary or part of something more fundamental.
With the season entering a crucial stage, we also discuss what needs to happen for Rovers to get back to their best and keep their title challenge alive.
Finally, we look ahead to the next opportunity to respond as Shamrock Rovers return to Tallaght Stadium to face Waterford.
It's another important week for Rovers, and there's plenty to discuss.

Rory Gaffney, the title race, and a crucial derby
2026/09/07
Episode 53 - Rory Gaffney, the title race, and a crucial derby
Shamrock Rovers were held to a goalless draw by Shelbourne at Tallaght Stadium on Friday night, but was it a point gained, two points dropped, or simply a game where Rovers never quite did enough to find a winner?
We also turn our attention to a busy week of player news.
Maleace Asamoah's loan spell has come to an end, while Alex Noonan has completed a move to Ipswich Town. We discuss both developments and what they could mean going forward.
The episode also takes time to reflect on Rory Gaffney following the announcement of his retirement from professional football. Gaffney leaves behind a significant legacy at Shamrock Rovers, and we look back at his contribution, his biggest moments and what made him such a popular figure among supporters.
Finally, attention turns to Richmond Park and Friday night's meeting with St Patrick's Athletic. With every point becoming increasingly important, we preview another significant Dublin derby and discuss just how important the result could be for Rovers.Ā

Fightback at the Brandywell earns the Hoops a draw
2026/08/31
Episode 52 - Fightback at the Brandywell earns the Hoops a draw
Ryan Brennan is solo today with Adam at Electric Picnic, as Shamrock Rovers return from Derry with a point that will feel like more and less than it deserves in equal measure.
Rovers found themselves 3-1 down at half-time at the Brandywell ā Ellis Chapman scoring twice and Michael Duffy adding a third to leave the league leaders in serious trouble before the break. The second half told a different story. Graham Burke's header and a Dylan Watts equaliser hauled Rovers level at 3-3, with Will Fitzgerald and Michael McColgan both going close to a winner in the final minutes. A point that keeps the five-point gap at the top intact ā but it was the first half that did the talking.
We look back on the game in full, asking the honest questions about how Rovers ended up 3-1 down before half-time, whether the performance carried the weight of a difficult few weeks, and what it says about where this squad is right now.
We then step back and ask a bigger question: is this a title-winning defence? Rovers conceded three times at the Brandywell today, and it is not the first time this season that the backline has been cut open. Pico Lopes missed a significant chunk of the campaign at the World Cup with Cape Verde, came back, and then picked up a straight red card against Drogheda in August ā a three-game ban that ruled him out for Dundalk, the St Patrick's Athletic FAI Cup tie, and Shelbourne. He is back now. But with three goals conceded in Derry today, the question of whether this defence can actually win a league is one that needs to be asked directly.
Finally, attention turns to the visit of Shelbourne to Tallaght Stadium. After the summer they have had, Rovers need a response ā and they need it at home. What should Stephen Bradley do differently, who is available, and what kind of performance does this moment call for?

Rovers' European campaign comes to an end
2026/08/28
Episode 51 -
The European campaign is over for Shamrock Rovers.
Ryan Brennan and Adam Casey look back on Rovers' 1-0 defeat to KuPS in the second leg of the Conference League play-off in Finland, a result which saw the Hoops lose 2-1 on aggregate and miss out on the Conference League league phase.
We discuss what went wrong on the night, the missed opportunity and the disappointment of seeing European football end after a campaign that began with Champions League ambitions.
With no European football to come, what does this mean for Shamrock Rovers now?
We look at the implications for the remainder of the season, how the club can respond to the disappointment and whether the lack of European fixtures could ultimately change the dynamic of the domestic campaign.
And attention now turns fully back to the League of Ireland Premier Division, with Rovers travelling to the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium on Sunday to face Derry City.
We preview the game, look at what Rovers need to improve after Thursday night's defeat and discuss the importance of getting back to winning ways in the league.

Rovers head to Finland with everything to play for
2026/08/23
Episode 50 - Rovers head to Finland with everything to play for
The Milltown Way reaches a milestone as episode 50 arrives, but the focus remains firmly on Rovers and a huge night ahead in Finland.
Ryan Brennan and Adam Casey look back on Shamrock Rovers' 1-1 draw with KuPS in the first leg of the Conference League playoff at Tallaght Stadium.
Was the result a fair reflection of the game? Did Rovers do enough to take an advantage into the second leg? And what will need to improve if the Hoops are to finish the job and secure European football for the season?
The middle segment takes a short break from the immediate football as Ryan and Adam reflect on reaching 50 episodes of The Milltown Way ā looking back at how the podcast has developed, some of the moments that have stood out and what the journey has been like so far.
Then attention turns back to Finland, with a place in the Conference League proper on the line.
We preview the second leg against KuPS, look at the key areas Rovers need to get right and discuss what it will take to come away from Finland with the result that sends the Hoops through.
50 episodes down. A huge European night ahead.

Rovers bow out of the FAI Cup
2026/08/17
Episode 49 - Rovers bow out of the FAI Cup
Today brought more bad news. A 3-2 defeat to St Patrick's Athletic at Richmond Park ends Rovers' FAI Cup campaign at the 3rd round stage, three days on from the 5-1 collapse in Albania that all but ended their European summer. We go through this afternoon's cup tie in detail, looking at where Rovers fell short, whether the performance reflected a team still carrying the damage from last Thursday, and what the result means in the broader context of a deeply difficult fortnight.
We then step back and ask the harder question: where has Rovers' summer gone? A week ago they held a 3-1 lead heading into the second leg against Egnatia, and were still alive in the FAI Cup. The picture is very different now. Out of the Europa League, out of the cup, with the title race the only piece of silverware still on the table.
Because there are two European, KuPS Kuopio of Finland in the first leg of the UEFA Conference League playoff at Tallaght Stadium on Thursday evening. Win over two legs and Rovers are in the Conference League group stage. Lose, and the European chapter of 2026 is finished. There is no safety net this time. We preview the tie: who KuPS are, what kind of side Rovers will face at Tallaght, where the danger lies, how Stephen Bradley's men should approach it, and whether there is any genuine confidence heading into this game given everything we have seen this week.

A night to forget as Rovers suffer Egnatia collapse
2026/08/14
Episode 48 - A night to forget as Rovers suffer Egnatia collapse
This is one Rovers won't want to remember.
Shamrock Rovers travelled to Albania with a 3-1 advantage over KF Egnatia in the Europa League third qualifying round, but what followed was a disastrous night as Egnatia ran out 5-1 winners.
The result saw Rovers lose the tie 6-4 on aggregate and exit the Europa League, despite having held a two-goal advantage heading into the second leg.
We go through the performance in detail, looking at where it went wrong, how Rovers allowed the tie to slip away and the wider implications of such a damaging European exit.
But there is little time to dwell on it.
Rovers are back in action on Sunday as they travel to Richmond Park to face St Patrick's Athletic in the third round of the FAI Cup.
Can Rovers respond immediately? What changes might be needed? And can they put Thursday night's disappointment behind them and progress in the cup?

Rovers roll on as Albania awaits
2026/08/08
Episode 47 - Rovers roll on as Albania awaits
Shamrock Rovers continued their strong domestic form with a 3-2 victory over Dundalk at Tallaght Stadium, in a game that saw all five goals arrive inside the opening 39 minutes.
We look back on an eventful night for the Hoops, breaking down the frantic first half, the second-half response and the key moments that saw Rovers hold on for another three points. The victory moves Rovers 10 points clear at the top of the League of Ireland Premier Division, although Bohemians and St Patrick's Athletic still have games to play.
We then take a step back from the individual results and ask a bigger question: what would actually constitute a successful season for Shamrock Rovers from this point?
With Rovers competing at the top of the league, still involved in the FAI Cup and continuing their European campaign, has the definition of a successful season changed? Is winning the league enough? How important is European progression? And what would leave supporters feeling that 2026 had fallen short of expectations?
Finally, we turn our attention back to Europe and preview Thursday's second leg against KF Egnatia in Albania. Rovers take a 3-1 advantage into the second leg following their victory in Tallaght, with a place in the Europa League play-off round at stake.
In this episode:

A big step towards Europe
2026/08/05
Episode 46 - A big pope
Shamrock Rovers took a major step towards the UEFA Europa League play-off round with an impressive 3-1 victory over KF Egnatia at Tallaght Stadium.
We break down one of Rovers' strongest European performances of the season, discuss the key moments from the first leg and assess what the result means ahead of next week's trip to Albania.
We then look at the bigger picture. Have expectations around European football changed at Shamrock Rovers? Has qualifying for league phase football gone from being an ambition to becoming an expectation? We discuss where the club now sits in Europe, how standards have evolved in recent seasons and what success now looks like.
Finally, attention turns back to domestic action as we preview Friday night's League of Ireland Premier Division clash with Dundalk. Can Rovers carry their European momentum into the league?
