Alex Cerda, the twelfth head coach of the Coachella Valley Lakers, is stepping into the spotlight after three seasons as an assistant — and he’s ready to lead with heart. Promoted following Zach Guthrie’s move to the LA Lakers, Cerda brings a unique blend of NBA G League experience, Clippers video work, and deep player development roots. GM Nick Mazzella praised his player rapport and strategic vision, while Cerda vows to build a gritty, competitive team. The Lakers kick off their season Nov 6 against Salt Lake City at their new Palm Desert home, featuring two-way stars like Chris Mañon and Arthur Kaluma — and fresh Exhibit 10 addition Anton Watson is poised to return for another run. After Kobe’s retirement, the Lakers made bold moves signing Luol Deng and Timofey Mozgov to big contracts—only to watch both underperform disastrously. Deng’s stats plummeted, he barely played his second season, and felt sidelined as the team prioritized youth. He revealed how frustrating it was to train hard only to be benched repeatedly, eventually deciding he didn’t want to stay. The Lakers waived him after stretching his contract, a clear mismatch. Meanwhile, rumors swirl that former Laker Maxi Kleber may join Luka Doncic in Europe. Listen in comfort:Get a discount on a Soli Pillow: http://solipillow.com/discount/dnn. Michael Porter Jr. isn’t buying the Lakers’ championship hype, calling their revamped roster — which shipped out LeBron James and Marcus Smart but brought in Walker Kessler and Quentin Grimes — “not enough” to contend. He’s not alone: Norman Powell also labeled them the most overrated team. With a brutal Western Conference looming and big-money bets on Austin Reaves and Kessler, the Lakers’ title window feels shaky — especially as owner Mark Walter exits amid legal scrutiny. Mark Walter’s $12.5 billion Lakers bid hit a snag after allegations surfaced about his use of insurance funds he controls, prompting him to sell his stake to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver defended the league’s due diligence, saying they reviewed Walter with government agencies and industry experts and found “no red flags”—though he stressed the league wasn’t investigating Walter personally. The sale’s collapse doesn’t affect Walter’s ownership in the Dodgers or his recent acquisition by Clearlake Capital of his Chelsea FC stake, underscoring the tangled financial webs behind major sports deals. Mark Walter’s rapid exit from major sports investments continues as he sells his Chelsea FC stake to Clearlake Capital, ending his brief ownership stint after just a year. Previously, he’d offloaded his controlling interest in the Lakers to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner. With no red flags found during his vetting by the NBA, Walter’s moves appear driven by financial urgency — possibly tied to an ongoing federal probe into potential misconduct. While he’s clinging to the Dodgers, his swift divestment from two top-tier clubs signals a major shift in his sports empire. Trey McBride is rewriting the tight end playbook—his coach Mike LaFleur compares him to Luka Doncic, praising his game-smart control, vision, and leadership. Last season, McBride led all tight ends in catches (126), yards (1,239), and touchdowns (11), earning his second Pro Bowl and first All-Pro First Team. While not the most athletic, his football IQ, separation skills, and relentless work ethic make him a dominant force. Like Doncic on the court, McBride thrives with intelligence over brute strength—and he’s becoming the face of his franchise both on and off the field. Nick Smith Jr., once a bench player for the Lakers, is making a bold move to Real Madrid — fueled by Luka Doncic’s claim that the NBA is “easier” than the EuroLeague. Smith, who’d never visited Madrid before, sees this as his chance to prove himself in a tougher, more compact league. Though his NBA career didn’t ignite, he’s now stepping into a lead guard role with Real Madrid through 2027, betting that EuroLeague’s tighter spacing and different rules will elevate his game — and whether Doncic’s take holds true for him remains to be seen. JJ Redick, Lakers head coach and wildfire survivor, is leading the charge to rebuild the Palisades Recreation Center — the community hub he and his family relied on, lost in the 2025 fires. Co-founder of LA Sports Strong, he’s rallying support to restore not just a building, but a lifeline for kids and families. At the groundbreaking ceremony, Redick stood firm: this center isn’t just about courts and playgrounds — it’s about resilience, unity, and bringing Pacific Palisades back together. The Phoenix Suns’ 2018 draft gamble backfired in epic fashion—passing on Luka Doncic for Deandre Ayton, a move fueled by concerns about overlapping skill sets and owner Robert Sarver’s pre-determined decision. Now, with Doncic dominating the league and Ayton bouncing between teams, the missed opportunity haunts the franchise. Former coach Igor Kokoskov, who’d coached Doncic internationally, insists they should’ve taken him—and recalls how Sarver allegedly knew the pick before the draft even ended. One wrong choice, and the Suns’ trajectory could’ve been rewritten. Listen in comfort:Get a discount on a Soli Pillow: http://solipillow.com/discount/dnn. Lakers coach JJ Redick, who lost his home in the Palisades fire, is back on the ground helping rebuild — literally, with a shovel at the groundbreaking of the new Palisades Recreation Center. Joined by Mayor Karen Bass and city officials, Redick, co-founder of LA Strong Sports, helped turn tragedy into progress as construction kicks off for a $50M public-private project set to restore indoor courts, community rooms, and new play areas. The demolition of the historic 76-year-old gym sparked debate, but the modernized facility promises a brighter future for the neighborhood — and it’s a rare uplifting moment for Lakers fans this season.
