The Hidden Mold Problem in Our Food
2026/10/07
What happens when the health of our soil becomes connected to the health of our bodies? In this episode, we take a deep dive into the relationship between modern agriculture, soil health, pesticides, mycotoxins, and human health. Damone Richardson and I are joined by a panel of Triada scientists spanning regenerative agriculture, nutrition, genetics, and endocrinology: Dr. Allen Williams, Dr. Stephan van Vliet, Dr. John Fagan, and Dr. Dan Stein. The conversation explores how glyphosate and other agricultural chemicals affect soil microbiology, how disruptions in the soil microbiome can create conditions that allow harmful fungi and their mycotoxins to thrive, and how those compounds can ultimately make their way into our food supply. The panel also discusses pesticide exposure, cumulative and synergistic effects, nutrient density, the gut microbiome, genetics and individual susceptibility, and the potential long-term and intergenerational effects of environmental toxins. But this conversation isn't just about the problems. The episode also explores the potential of regenerative agriculture to rebuild soil biology, improve the resilience of farms, increase nutrient density, and create a healthier food system. From the soil beneath our feet to the food on our plates, this episode takes a closer look at how agriculture, nutrition, and human health are deeply connected, and why changing the way we farm is the impetus for better health! 26. We Need to Talk About Energy Drinks
2026/09/16
Energy drinks have become a normalized part of everyday life, but what happens when high-caffeine products become deeply embedded in college campuses, athletics, and youth culture? In this episode of Go With Your Gut, I take a closer look at the growing presence of energy drinks and the ways these products are being marketed to teens and young adults. From college campus pop-ups and free samples to athletic sponsorships and social media, energy drink companies have found countless ways to make these products feel like a normal part of studying, sports, and everyday life. I break down what high doses of caffeine can do to the body, including how caffeine blocks the brain's fatigue signals and can contribute to a cycle of fatigue, poor sleep, and reaching for another stimulant. I also explore the cardiovascular risks associated with energy drinks and why serious adverse events can occur even in people without a known heart condition. We also take a closer look at what is actually inside these drinks. Ingredients like taurine, guarana, yerba mate, B vitamins, L-carnitine, ginseng, and adaptogens can create the impression of a healthy, performance-enhancing product, while the combined effects and appropriate dosing of these ingredients are not always well understood, particularly for those under 18. So if energy drinks aren't the answer to fatigue, what is? I discuss the underlying reasons we may feel tired, from sleep debt and dehydration to nutrition, blood sugar regulation, and chronic stress. I share practical strategies for building more sustainable energy through sleep, nutrition, hydration, morning light, movement, and lower-caffeine alternatives like green tea and matcha. Most importantly, this conversation asks us to look beyond the can and consider why so many young people feel like they need a stimulant just to get through the day. If you're a parent, student, athlete, educator, or anyone looking to better understand caffeine, energy drinks, and sustainable energy, this episode is for you. https://www.medpagetoday.com/special-reports/exclusives/122662 https://acsm.org/exercise-energy-drinks/ https://www.todaysdietitian.com/acsm-releases-new-recommendations-warnings-on-energy-drink-safety/ Learn more about my work at https://www.normaflood.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@normaflood TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@normafloodrdn Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/normaflood23/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/norma.flood.nutritionist LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/norma-flood-ms-rd-4bbb1515/ Produced by Marley Huggins: https://www.marrrmedia.com/
25. From Pain to Purpose: A Mother's Journey to Advocate for Her Son's Health
2026/09/02
What if your child's biggest challenges became the doorway to a whole new way of advocating for them? In this episode of Go With Your Gut, I sit down with Jamie — mother, advocate, and founder of Uniquely You Magazine — to talk about her journey navigating her son's developmental and communication challenges, and how it reshaped the way she thinks about food, advocacy, education, and possibility. Jamie shares what she learned through nutrition, gut health, and genetics as she worked to understand her son's needs. Shifting toward whole foods and removing trigger foods brought his first real breakthroughs, decreasing seizures. Targeted detoxification cleared even more behavioral symptoms. Her son's participation in Triada's PEARL study revealed harmful chemicals still hiding in his "safe" diet. Once Jamie added organic, higher-fiber foods, he came out of a fog — his eye contact improved and he became more responsive than ever before. Beyond food, we dig into what it means to meet children where they are, why not every child learns or communicates the same way, and the real obstacles families face advocating for accommodations and alternative approaches within the school system. Finally, Jamie shares how she turned her personal experience into a larger mission through Uniquely You Magazine — a publication sharing stories, resources, and opportunities within the disability community — and her vision for building even more support for families like hers. If you're a parent, caregiver, educator, or anyone wanting to better understand neurodiversity, advocacy, and the many paths to supporting it, this episode is for you. 21. Finding Yourself on the Trail: The Lasting Impact of Backpacking w/ Poway Backpackers
2026/07/08
What is it about backpacking that changes the way we see ourselves—and the world around us? In this episode of Go With Your Gut, I sit down with four lifelong backpackers—Abby, Fiona, Justin, and Carson—to explore how spending time in the wilderness has shaped their lives far beyond the trail. Each guest shares their unique journey into backpacking, from childhood adventures and unforgettable expeditions to the challenges that tested their resilience and the moments that transformed their perspective. Together, we discuss how disconnecting from technology and everyday distractions creates space for deeper self-reflection, stronger relationships, and a greater appreciation for the natural world. We also explore the physical and mental benefits of backpacking, the confidence that comes from pushing past discomfort, the importance of community in the outdoors, and why experiences in nature often stay with us long after we've returned home. Whether you're an experienced backpacker, someone looking to spend more time outside, or simply curious about the ways nature can impact our mental well-being, this conversation offers an inspiring reminder that sometimes the greatest growth happens one step at a time. 2026/06/24
Struggling with stubborn acne that never seems to go away—no matter what products, prescriptions, or skincare routines you try? In this episode of Go With Your Gut, I sit down with functional nutritionist Delaney Doney, to explore the deeper root causes of acne and why lasting skin health often starts from within. Delaney shares her personal journey through chronic health issues, including cystic acne, digestive problems, fatigue, anxiety, and toxic mold exposure. Through her experience and advanced training in functional medicine, she discovered that acne is often a symptom of underlying imbalances rather than simply a skin problem. Together, we discuss the powerful connection between the gut, hormones, stress, and skin health, and why conventional acne treatments may not address the true drivers behind persistent breakouts. 18. The Protein Craze: Healthy or Harmful?
2026/05/27
Protein is essential for muscle growth, metabolism, hormones, immune health, and longevity… but more is not always better. In this episode, I break down the modern protein obsession — from protein Pop-Tarts and candy to bars, shakes, powders, and the “1 gram per pound” rule dominating social media. I dive into how excess protein and highly processed “high-protein” foods may negatively impact the gut microbiome, increase inflammation, and contribute to issues like constipation and digestive dysfunction — especially when paired with a low-fiber diet. I also unpack how much protein most people actually need, why quality matters more than marketing, and what to look for when choosing protein powders, bars, and drinks. It's time to look beyond the marketing of protein and look at why quality matters just as much as quantity. 17. Rebirth of the Gut with Thaena
2026/05/13
In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Andrea McBeth, Co-Founder and CEO of Thaena®, to explore one of the most fascinating frontiers in gut health: postbiotics derived from healthy microbiomes. We break down the science behind fecal transplants and how Thaena has transformed that concept into a sterilized, accessible postbiotic—capturing the powerful communication molecules our gut bacteria produce without the risks of live bacteria. From short-chain fatty acids like butyrate to neurotransmitter precursors and immune-modulating compounds, we dive into how these molecules influence everything from digestion and inflammation to brain health and metabolism. We also talk about real-world applications—why traditional gut protocols sometimes fail, how postbiotics can help “jumpstart” the microbiome, and their potential role in conditions like IBS, SIBO, constipation, and even neuroinflammatory disorders. This conversation challenges the way we think about probiotics, nutrition, and the future of medicine—highlighting just how much we still have to learn about the ecosystem inside us.
