Frank and Leslie Coles have cruised just over 33,000nm on two Nordhavn trawlers, a Nordhavn 62 and now a Nordhavn 64. They first started living aboard full time on a sailing catamaran in 2021 before making the move to passage-making trawlers and long-range cruising. They share what it costs to own and maintain a Nordhavn every year, what a pre-purchase survey found on a Nordhavn 64 that had sat on the market for two years, and why Frank would rather buy a two-year-old boat than build new. Kadey Krogen filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on July 6, 2026, after Elizabeth Fortunato and her husband Vince had paid in full for their new Kadey Krogen 50 Open. The finished boat sits at the Asia Harbor yard in Taiwan, along with more than 2 million dollars they paid including shipping. On this episode of the Full Displacement podcast, Elizabeth walks Maryline Bossar and Amanda Haley through the new boat build, the warning signs, and what anyone buying a new build can learn from her experience. Elizabeth and Vince chose the Krogen 50 Open for its full displacement hull, its open helm layout, and a brand with 49 years of reputation behind it. Over eight payments, the red flags added up: requests to pay ahead of schedule, a comment at the boat show that the order book ended in 2027, no plan when the 2025 tariffs hit, and silence after the final payment. We cover why a completed boat can put an owner in a harder spot in a Chapter 7 than an unfinished one, the difference between the Kadey Krogen brand and Asia Harbor Yacht Builders, the commissioning and warranty gaps waiting on the other side, and why paying cash left them more exposed than a construction loan with staged draws would have. Most boat sellers pay 10% to sell their boat and never ask where that number came from. Four sellers are now asking a federal court, and last month the case they brought came back from the brink twice the size it started. We are Maryline Bossar and Amanda Haley, the principals at Current Yachts, a licensed yacht brokerage in the state of Florida. In this episode we sit down with antitrust law expert Hannibal Travis, Professor of Law at FIU College of Law and a nearly 30 year antitrust lawyer and scholar, to read the amended complaint in the yacht brokerage commission class action and explain, in plain language: what it says and how industry practices are being challenged and what it means for buyers, sellers, and brokers. IMPORTANT: Everything discussed in this episode comes from public court filings. All allegations are unproven and none of them have been decided by a court. Nothing here is legal advice.
