One moment he was a soldier fighting in Iraq. The next, he was engulfed in flames, trapped inside a burning armoured vehicle, fighting for his life. For former British Army soldier Karl Hinett, life changed in a matter of seconds.Drenched in petrol and surrounded by flames, Karl experienced a level of terror most of us could never begin to imagine. Trapped with nowhere to escape, he suffered devastating burns that would change his life forever. But surviving the fire was only the beginning. What followed was a gruelling journey through physical pain, rehabilitation, mental battles and the challenge of rebuilding a life after unimaginable trauma. For many, simply surviving such an ordeal would have been enough. But Karl wasn't finished. Not even close.Rather than allowing his injuries to dictate what he could achieve, Karl went on to push his body and mind to extraordinary limits. From running ultramarathons to taking on some of the world's toughest endurance events, Karl has continued to challenge himself in ways that would test even the fittest individuals. Marathons, extreme-distance running, gruelling endurance challenges and events that demand relentless physical and mental determination became part of his journey. A man who once fought to survive inside a burning vehicle went on to test the very limits of human endurance. From fighting for his life to pushing himself beyond limits most people would never dare approach. But behind the medals, achievements and extraordinary physical resilience is another story. The psychological scars of war, the impact of trauma and the battles that don't simply disappear because the physical wounds have healed. In this episode of The Old Paratrooper Podcast, Karl opens up about the day he was engulfed in flames, the terrifying moments that followed, his recovery, the mental battles and how endurance sport became such a significant part of his life. We discuss war, survival, severe burns, mental health, ultramarathons, resilience, purpose and what it really takes to rebuild yourself when life has been turned upside down. This isn't another motivational story about being tough. It's about a man who has experienced unimaginable pain, stared death in the face and refused to let that moment write the rest of his story. An extraordinary individual whose journey demonstrates that resilience isn't about never suffering. It's about what you choose to do in the face of that suffering. 🎙️ The Old Paratrooper Podcast Presents: Karl HinettHe survived the flames. Then he went looking for his limits. Brent Tucker spent 20 years in US Army Special Operations, serving as both a Green Beret and an operator with the elite 1st SFOD-D — better known as Delta Force. Across his career, Brent completed 13 combat deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, serving as an assaulter and sniper. His service came at a serious personal cost: he was shot and wounded by grenade shrapnel during combat in Afghanistan, injuries for which he received the Purple Heart. After medically retiring as a Master Sergeant in 2018, Brent took the same drive into a new chapter — building businesses supporting the first responder community and becoming the host of the Tier 1 Podcast. The views expressed in this clip and podcast are those of the guests and do not necessarily reflect those of The Old Paratrooper Podcast. ⚠️ VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED ⚠️This podcast contains graphic descriptions and discussions that some viewers may find distressing. You asked for him back — so we got him back. After the incredible response to his first appearance, Chris Ryan returns to The Old Paratrooper Podcast for a second conversation that goes into territory we simply couldn't cover the first time.Chris begins by talking about his first-hand experience of Gaza, after joining a military delegation that received an intensive briefing on the October 7 attacks before entering Gaza and seeing the tunnel network for himself. He describes the footage he was shown, the devastation he witnessed, the complexity of fighting above and below ground, and why he believes misinformation and propaganda have made an already horrific conflict even harder for the outside world to understand. This isn't presented as a comfortable conversation or an attempt to tell people what they should believe. It's Chris explaining what he personally saw, what he was told and what conclusions he drew from the experience, while also acknowledging the suffering of innocent civilians and the complexity of the conflict. Then we hand the episode over to you. After hundreds of questions and comments following the first podcast, I put some of the ones you wanted answered directly to Chris. We get into Bravo Two Zero, his thoughts on the criticism and controversy surrounding the patrol, his relationship with Andy McNab, the men who didn't come home, and some of the claims that have been made about what happened.Chris also talks about women serving on the front line, why he believes the standards should remain exactly that — standards — and why anyone capable of meeting them deserves their place. We discuss life inside the SAS, the early joint SAS/SBS selection, how dramatically the operational tempo changed during Iraq, whether he misses the Special Forces world, writing The One That Got Away, the psychological impact of revisiting old memories, becoming a bestselling author and dealing with the fame that followed. It's raw, at times uncomfortable, sometimes funny and completely unfiltered. This is a very special episode of The Old Paratrooper Podcast.I sit down with former Ranger and Delta Force operator Mark Meadows for a fascinating conversation about his own incredible military career but also about the extraordinary man he called Dad. Major Richard “Dick” Meadows was one of the most influential figures in the history of American Special Operations. From Korea and the early days of the Green Berets, to serving alongside the British 22 SAS, covert operations with MACV-SOG in Vietnam and commanding the assault group on the legendary Son Tay Raid, his career reads like the history of modern Special Forces itself. Even after retiring from the Army, Dick Meadows wasn't finished. He played an important role in the establishment of 1st SFOD-D — Delta Force, and later operated covertly inside Tehran during the planning for the 1980 Iran hostage rescue attempt. But this episode isn't simply military history.Mark gives us a rare insight into the man behind the legend — what Dick Meadows was like as a father, the standards he lived by, the lessons he passed down, and what it was like for Mark to forge his own path through the Rangers and ultimately Delta Force while carrying the Meadows name. Two generations.
