October 2, 2026 - Ruth 4 & Proverbs 16:30-33
2026/10/02
Today's reading covers Ruth 4 and Proverbs 16:30–33, closing out the book of Ruth. Our reflection follows Boaz as he goes to the city gate, settles the redemption of Naomi's land before the elders, and takes Ruth as his wife. He becomes the redeemer who secures their family's future and fathers the line that leads through Obed and Jesse to David. The discussion frames Boaz as a type of Christ and traces a recurring pattern through the book: people come empty and are made full, from Naomi's loss in chapter one through Ruth's gleaning and her marriage to Boaz, tying it forward to the genealogy that ultimately leads to Jesus.
Proverbs 16:30–33 closes out the chapter with a handful of short, memorable sayings. Dishonest intentions reveal themselves in small gestures like a wink or pursed lips, while gray hair earns its honor not from age alone but from a lifetime spent pursuing righteousness. Being slow to anger is named better than great strength, and even something as small as the casting of a lot is shown to rest entirely in the Lord's hands.

October 1, 2026 - Ruth 3 & Proverbs 16:26-29
2026/10/01
Today's reading covers Ruth 3 and Proverbs 16:26–29. The reflection explains levirate marriage and the role of the kinsman-redeemer, then follows Naomi's plan for Ruth to approach Boaz at the threshing floor with the request, "spread your wings over your servant." It notes how Naomi has changed from the bitterness of "call me Mara" to caring actively for Ruth. It also highlights Ruth's hope-fueled obedience, which trusts God's character even when the outcome is unclear, and Boaz's integrity and generosity as he promises to redeem. In Proverbs 16:26–29, the discussion covers the way a worker's appetite drives honest labor, along with warnings against the worthless person who plots evil, the dishonest person who spreads strife, and the violent person who leads others astray.

September 30, 2026 - Ruth 2 & Proverbs 16:21-25
2026/09/30
Today's reading covers Ruth 2 and Proverbs 16:21–25, plus a listener question on whether modern-day prophetic words are biblically legitimate. The reflection highlights God's providence at work as Ruth "happens" to glean in Boaz's field, meets his uncommon generosity toward a foreigner, and receives protection and provision beyond what the Law required — all pointing toward Boaz's role as a kinsman-redeemer. In Proverbs 16:21–25, the discussion covers the persuasive power of gracious, sweet speech, wisdom expressed through judicious words, and the warning that "there is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death."

September 29, 2026 - Ruth 1 & Proverbs 16:17-20
2026/09/29
Today's reading begins the book of Ruth alongside Proverbs 16:17–20. The reflection sets Ruth against the dark backdrop of the judges era — famine, a family's flight to pagan Moab, and the deaths of Elimelech and his two sons — before highlighting Ruth's loyalty and apparent conversion ("your people shall be my people, and your God my God") in contrast to Naomi's grief and bitterness at renaming herself Mara. God's quiet providence is traced even in the smallest details, like the return to Bethlehem at the start of barley harvest. In Proverbs 16:17–20, the discussion covers the highway of the upright, the famous warning that "pride goes before destruction," and the blessing found in giving thought to God's word and trusting in the Lord.

September 28, 2026 - Judges 21 & Proverbs 16:13-16
2026/09/28
Today's reading covers Judges 21 and Proverbs 16:13–16, closing out the book of Judges. The reflection follows the disastrous aftermath of the war against Benjamin — a rash vow leading to the raid on Jabesh-Gilead and the kidnapping of the daughters of Shiloh — as further evidence of the moral chaos summed up in the book's closing line, "everyone did what was right in his own eyes." In Proverbs 16:13–16, the discussion covers the value of righteous speech before a king, the danger of a king's wrath versus the favor found in his goodwill, and the reminder that wisdom is worth more than gold or silver.

September 26, 2026 - Judges 20 & Proverbs 16:9-12
2026/09/26
Today's reading covers Judges 20 and Proverbs 16:9–12. Our reflection follows Israel's descent into civil war after the tribe of Benjamin refuses to hand over the men responsible for the atrocity against the Levite's concubine. The other tribes assemble a massive force of 400,000 against Benjamin's 26,000, yet Israel suffers two defeats before God finally gives them the victory. This is a sobering picture of how even a just cause doesn't guarantee an easy or immediate win.
Proverbs 16:9–12 turns to the Lord's hand over human plans and leadership. A person may plan his own path, but the Lord establishes his steps. A king's word carries weight in judgment, with just scales and honest weights described as belonging to the Lord himself. The passage continues by calling evil an abomination to kings, since a throne is established through righteousness. Lastly, the discussion ties this forward to Jesus Christ as the ultimate righteous king, pointing listeners toward hope in his promised return and eternal reign.

September 25, 2026 - Judges 19 & Proverbs 16:5-8
2026/09/25
Today's reading covers Judges 19 and Proverbs 16:5–8, one of the darkest chapters in the book of Judges. The reflection follows a Levite's journey with his concubine and the horrifying events that unfold in Gibeah, set against the recurring refrain that "there was no king in Israel." We don't shy away from the text, describing genuine distress at its content and talk honestly about the concubinage of the period as a departure from God's design. Lastly, we regret the Levite's failure to protect, and long for the hope of justice that only comes through Christ in the face of such lawlessness.
Proverbs 16:5–8 shifts to matters of the heart and integrity. Arrogance is named an abomination to the Lord that will not go unpunished, while steadfast love, faithfulness, and the fear of the Lord are what turn a person from evil. When someone's ways please the Lord, even their enemies are brought to peace with them, and the passage closes with the reminder that a little gained righteously is better than great wealth gained through injustice. We reflect back to living with integrity in ordinary work and business as a way of honoring God and leaving behind a godly legacy.

September 24, 2026 - Judges 18 & Proverbs 16:1-4
2026/09/24
Today's reading covers Judges 18 and Proverbs 16:1–4. Our reflection follows the tribe of Dan as they search for territory to inherit and stumble upon Micah's house, with its idols and hired priest. The Danites recruit the Levite with a better offer, steal Micah's idols, and go on to conquer Laish, renaming it Dan and establishing idolatrous worship there. Our discussion lingers on the priest's answer to the Danites, technically true but carefully noncommittal, as another small marker of the moral drift running through the book.
Proverbs 16:1–4 turns to God's sovereignty over human plans and words. A person may make plans in their heart, but the answer that comes and is established ultimately belongs to the Lord. While a person's ways can look pure in their own eyes, it's the Lord who weighs the spirit. The passage calls us to commit our work to the Lord so that our plans can be established. Though this doesn't guarantee God will answer according to our preferences, we can be assured that the Lord has made everything for its purpose, even the wicked, for the day of trouble.

September 23, 2026 - Judges 17 & Proverbs 15:30-33
2026/09/23
Today's reading covers Judges 17 and Proverbs 15:30–33. Our reflection follows Micah's confession of stealing 1,100 pieces of silver from his mother, who then dedicates the recovered silver to carved and metal images rather than proper restitution. Micah sets up a household shrine with an ephod and idols, installs his own son as priest, then hires a wandering young Levite as his personal priest for ten pieces of silver a year. Micah's decisions summarizes the refrain that, "everyone did what was right in his own eyes."
Proverbs 15:30–33 turns to the value of receiving correction. We consider how good news and a bright countenance are shown to refresh the heart and body. Then we remember that listening to life-giving reproof is what seats a person among the wise, while ignoring instruction is really a form of self-contempt. Lastly we reflect on how the fear of the Lord is named as wisdom's starting point and how humility comes before honor — a sharp contrast to the pride and self-rule on display in Judges.

September 22, 2026 - Judges 16 & Proverbs 15:26-29
2026/09/22
Today's reading covers Judges 16 and Proverbs 15:26–29. Our reflection traces Samson's fatal entanglement with Delilah, who presses him day after day until he finally reveals the secret of his Nazirite vow, leading to his hair being cut. We see the LORD leave him and take his strength. Samson's capture, blinding, and imprisonment by the Philistines lead to Samson's final moment, where, in blindness and weakness, he calls out to the Lord one last time for strength. Yahweh provides the strength to bring down the temple of Dagon and kill more Philistines in his death than in his entire life. This moment leads him to a place among the faithful in Hebrews 11 as he cries out to God in faith, despite a life largely given over to his own flesh and desires.
In Proverbs 15:26–29, the discussion covers the abomination of the wicked's thoughts against the purity of gracious words, the trouble that greed for unjust gain brings on one's own household against the life found in hating a bribe, the righteous heart that ponders its answer against the wicked mouth that pours out evil, and the Lord's distance from the wicked against His attentiveness to the prayer of the righteous.

September 21, 2026 - Judges 15 & Proverbs 15:21-25
2026/09/21
Today's reading covers Judges 15 and Proverbs 15:21–25. Our reflection follows Samson's escalating conflict with the Philistines after his wife is given to another man. His revenge with foxes and torches results in his father-in-law and wife being burned to death. The chapter also covers his journey to Etam, his confrontation with the men of Judah, and his empowered victory over a thousand Philistines with the jawbone of a donkey. Our reading also traces Samson's repeated violations of his Nazirite vow within the chapter.
In Proverbs 15:21–25, our reading covers the joy folly brings to one who lacks sense, against the man of understanding who walks a straight path, and how plans made without counsel can easily fail. The joy of an apt answer and a word spoken in due season is followed by the prudent's upward path in life. Lastly, we are comforted that the Lord will not allow the house of the proud to prosper while maintaining the widow's boundaries.

September 19, 2026 - Judges 14 & Proverbs 15:17-20
2026/09/19
Today's reading covers Judges 14 and Proverbs 15:17–20. Our reflection follows Samson's pursuit of a Philistine woman against his parents' hesitations, his encounter with the lion, and the riddle he poses at his wedding feast that unravels into violence once it's solved through deception. The discussion sits with the tension of verse 4 and the words, "from the Lord," and who was seeking an opportunity against the Philistines. Like the sin surrounding Joseph's life, God can work through human sin and folly without being its author, as James 1 assures us that God himself tempts no one.
In Proverbs 15:17–20, the discussion covers the better portion of a humble meal shared in love over a lavish feast marked by hatred. We compare the hot-tempered man who stirs up strife with the one slow to anger who quiets it; the thorny, difficult path of the sluggard with the level highway of the upright; and, lastly, the wise son who brings his father gladness with the fool who despises his mother.

September 18, 2026 - Judges 13 & Proverbs 15:13-16
2026/09/18
Today's reading covers Judges 13 and Proverbs 15:13–16. Our reflection follows Samson's birth narrative, as the angel of the Lord appears to Manoah's barren wife and announces a son set apart under the Nazirite vow. The scene and discussion draw a parallel to Mary's own angelic annunciation, while also tracing how this account fits the recurring downward-spiral pattern already seen across Judges.
In Proverbs 15:13–16, the discussion covers how a glad heart shows itself in a cheerful face while a crushed spirit follows sorrow. We review the heart of understanding that seeks knowledge and the fool who feeds on folly. The cheerful heart's continual feasting shows it rests in the Lord, unlike the evil that fills the days of the afflicted; and contentment with a little and fear of the Lord is better than great treasure paired with trouble. Lastly, we are encouraged by our repeated reminder to fear the Lord, and inner contentment from God shapes a person's outward demeanor.

September 17, 2026 - Judges 12 & Proverbs 15:9-12
2026/09/17
Today's reading covers Judges 12 and Proverbs 15:9–12. Our reflection follows the conflict between Jephthah and the Ephraimites, and the brief succession of the judges Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon. We revisit and correct an earlier comment on Jephthah's vow, clarifying that child sacrifice was explicitly forbidden under the law regardless of a vow's binding nature. This case study affirms one scriptural principle (keeping vows) while opposing a clear violation of another.
In Proverbs 15:9–12, our discussion covers the wicked way that is an abomination to the Lord, against his love for the one who pursues righteousness. Then we see the severe discipline awaiting the one who forsakes correction, and we unpack the meanings of Sheol and Abaddon with the imagery of lying open before the Lord as a picture of His full knowledge of the human heart. Lastly, we assess what the scoffer and the wise do in response to reproof.

September 16, 2026 - Judges 11 & Proverbs 15:5-8
2026/09/16
Today's reading covers Judges 11 and Proverbs 15:5–8. Our reflections follow Jephthah, a mighty warrior once rejected for his questionable parentage. Gilead's elders recruit him to fight the Ammonites, and he makes a rash vow to sacrifice whatever comes out of his house first if he wins —a vow tragically fulfilled when his own daughter greets him after the battle. The discussion also addresses a listener question on Judges 10, working through how God's declaration "I will save you no more" fits with His later compassion toward Israel, framing it as God's unchanging character responding relationally to genuine repentance rather than a contradiction.
In Proverbs 15:5–8, our reflection covers the fool who despises his father's instruction against the prudent who heeds correction, and the treasure found in the house of the righteous against the trouble that befalls the wicked's income. Then we consider the wise lips that spread knowledge against the foolish heart that doesn't, and the wicked's sacrifice as an abomination to the Lord against the acceptable prayer of the upright.
