I celebrate becoming an Ann Patchett completist, inspired by a spring 2025 trip to her Nashville-area bookstore, Parnassus Books. I recap Patchett’s acclaim, writing strengths, and awards; note a poll of readers’ favorites; and explain that her books can be read in any order, with recent titles especially well received.
I rank Patchett’s 13 full-length adult books (10 fiction, 3 nonfiction), describe plots and reactions from early novels through nonfiction collections and memoirs, and name top picks and an overall #1.
I close with author read-alike recommendations, highlight Patchett’s favorite books list, and share Gilmore Girls-related reading resources.

🍂5 Fall Episodes of Gilmore Girls to Rewatch (and What to Read After)

I share a list created for Elle of Elle Reads Library Books on Substack: five fall-themed Gilmore Girls episodes to rewatch with book pairings. The recommendations include “Lorelai’s First Day at Chilton” (S1E2) paired with Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina (plus other Dickens/Tolstoy and Harry Potter references); “Kiss and Tell” (S1E7) for peak Stars Hollow fall visuals, paired with Arthur Miller’s The Crucible (with additional referenced titles); “A Deep-Fried Korean Thanksgiving” (S3E9) paired with Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men and a Grinch reference; “21 Is the Loneliest Number” (S6E7) for the show’s only Halloween scene and Rory’s 21st, paired with Alice in Wonderland; and A Year in the Life: “Fall,” paired with Cheryl Strayed’s Wild, along with many other book references and seasonal inspiration.

🏫10 Dark Academia Books With That New England Aesthetic
2026/09/17
Welcome to Friday Night Readers, a virtual book club inspired by Gilmore Girls, hosted by Julianne Buonocore, who has run a Rory Gilmore reading challenge since 2021 and wrote the Unofficial Guide to the Books on Gilmore Girls. Fueled by coffee, we help you read, live, and write like Rory.
Gilmore Girls is best known for feeling light, but it actually shares many storylines with dark academia books. It all started when Rory was “Puffed” at Chilton, and it continued when she “jumped, Jack” with The Life and Death Brigade at Yale. Rory’s schoolgirl style has that traditional collegiate look, and even Richard’s Connecticut study looks straight out of the Ivy League.
So, as we take our Rory Gilmore reading challenge to read the books on Gilmore Girls, let’s explore the dark academia these characters referenced, along with a few more of my personal favorite fall books with this moody aesthetic.
Light a fall candle, throw on a Rory Gilmore sweater, and turn these pages this autumn as you rewatch the fall episodes of Gilmore Girls.
