Description

Internal Momentum is a podcast about the moment something finally moves out of the way. Not the advice you already know. Not the strategy you’ve heard a hundred times. But the internal shift that made different behaviour possible in the first place. We all know what we should do.Eat better. Train consistently. Have the hard conversation. Focus. Commit. Lead properly. And yet… we don’t. So the real question isn’t what to do.It’s what changed internally when someone finally did it. This podcast is built around a single, quiet question: What shifted inside you that made the new behaviour inevitable? Through long-form conversations with founders, operators, leaders, creatives, and high-performers, we explore: the internal blocks people were carrying without realising itthe beliefs, identities, or fears that were quietly in the waythe perspective shifts that dissolved resistance rather than overpowering itthe moments where effort was replaced by clarityhow momentum returns when you stop fighting yourselfThese aren’t motivational stories or tactical playbooks. They’re conversations about internal transformation, the reframes, realisations, and internal decisions that changed how someone showed up day after day. Because sustainable momentum doesn’t come from more discipline. It comes from removing the friction inside the person. If you’re building something, a passion, a business, a life - and you’re tired of trying to force yourself forward, this podcast is an invitation to look at what’s actually in the way… and what happens when it finally shifts.

Jason Gowans: From Hope To Knowing
2026/10/17
Sometimes life does not fall apart one piece at a time. Sometimes it all goes at once. In this episode of Internal Momentum, Ben sits down with Jason Gowans, co-founder of Sun Central Solar, to unpack what it really takes to start again from nothing when your body, your career and your finances all give way in the same season. Jason shares how, only months after moving his young family from New Zealand to Australia to work in dairy farming, his back gave out and major spinal surgery followed. With three little kids, a run of bad tenants back home, the banks knocking, and an open offer from his father to come home, he chose to stay and rebuild. He talks honestly about the years that are now mostly a blur, the self doubt that came with them, and why his answer for anyone in that place is not a formula. It is to keep going, and to accept that nobody is coming to rescue you. Ben and Jason explore why suffering is where most of the real learning happens, why wisdom and discernment are different from knowledge, and the peace that comes from working hard while letting go of the outcome. Ben reflects on watching his own father slip into survival mode through a long back injury, and on the weight of believing that everything in life rests on your shoulders alone. They also go somewhere few business conversations go. Jason describes the two strangers who changed the direction of his life. One, a law clerk who reshaped how he sees money, debt and the banking system in a single conversation. The other, a man at a small country church who handed him five hundred dollars the day before he needed four hundred and eighty for a moving truck. It is the moment Jason says he stopped hoping and started knowing, and it explains why a man who runs a solar company does not believe in subsidies. If you have ever watched everything you built fall apart at once and wondered whether you could start again, this episode will remind you that the way back is simply one foot in front of the other. About the Guest Jason Gowans is the co-founder and managing director of Sun Central Solar, a renewable energy business based in Leeton in the New South Wales Riverina. The company designs and installs solar, battery storage and EV charging systems for homes and businesses across a large regional footprint that bigger retailers often find too hard to service. A father of three, Jason rebuilt his life and career from scratch at thirty after major back surgery ended his farming career. Meachelle Roelofs: What You Make It Mean
2026/10/16
Most people think the chaos in their business comes from the business. Sometimes it is coming from inside their own head. In this episode of Internal Momentum, Ben sits down with good friend and serial entrepreneur Meachelle Roelofs to unpack what it really costs to keep transforming, in business, in faith, and in marriage, after 32 years and more than 15 startups. Meachelle shares how the chaos that followed her through cafes, bookshops, mechanical workshops, and technology companies turned out to be coming from her own thinking, and how working on herself changed what she believed she was worth. She opens up about a story she heard on a call years ago, the child digging through a pile of horse manure because there has to be a pony in there somewhere, and how it changed the way she walked through grief, loss, and the hardest days her family has faced. Ben and Meachelle explore why business owners keep hitting the same problems no matter how fast the tools get, why the gaps in a business tend to mirror the gaps in its owner, and why so much of the stress people carry comes from the story they tell themselves before anything has actually happened. Ben shares a moment from his own childhood that shaped how he saw himself for years, and how three brothers can walk out of the same moment carrying completely different beliefs. They also get honest about marriage. Meachelle and her husband have been married for 31 years, and she is clear that neither of them came out of the box that way. She shares the simple test that tells you whether your relationship needs work, why the number of things you love about your partner matters more than you think, and why staying together is a choice you make every single day. If you have ever looked at the mess in your business, your marriage, or your own head and wondered how it got that way, this episode will help you start looking for the pony. About the Guest Meachelle Roelofs is an entrepreneur with 32 years in business across more than 15 startups and several acquired businesses, spanning hospitality, retail, automotive, and technology. She currently runs four companies, including Transformed ICT, where she helps business owners with technology, automation, and the personal side of growth. Paul Avery: Smelling The Rain Again
2026/10/10
Stopping the drinking does not stop the pain. It just means you finally have to feel it. In this episode of Internal Momentum, Ben sits down with Paul Avery to unpack what it takes to start living again while you are still in the middle of healing. Paul is not a coach or an expert with a framework to sell. He is someone doing the work in real time, and willing to talk about it honestly. Paul shares how twenty years of trauma, alcohol, drugs, and isolation left him so shut down that two years ago he could barely hold a conversation. He opens up about the masks he learned to wear as a kid, the shame of believing he was the only one who had been through what he had, and why keeping it all to himself was the biggest mistake he ever made. He talks about what changed when he finally told his family the truth, why his daughter became his rock, and the small moments that told him something was shifting, like stepping outside in the rain and smelling it for the first time in as long as he can remember. Ben and Paul explore why numbing the bad also numbs the good, and why the hard feelings have to come up before the joy can come back. They talk about the difference between having thoughts and being your thoughts, the mirror between how we see other people and how we see ourselves, and the shame that grows around the things nobody talks about. Ben shares his own versions too, from food and keeping himself relentlessly busy to the private habits he spent years believing made him the only weird one. They also explore the idea that it is not the event that traumatises you, but the story you tell yourself about it. And why the experience Paul kept hidden for so long may now be the thing that gives him purpose: being living proof, for someone still in the thick of it, that recovery is possible and that nobody has to do it alone. If you have ever kept something to yourself because you were sure you were the only one, this episode will remind you that you are not, and that it is never too late to start talking. About the Guest Paul Avery is rebuilding his life after long-term trauma, addiction, and years of isolation, and is sharing his story from the middle of his recovery rather than the other side of it. He speaks openly in the hope that it reaches someone going through the same thing. His interests include AI, music, and supporting other people on the recovery journey. Brandon Willington: Business Is An Expensive Mirror
2026/10/07
Most business owners think the ceiling is in the business. More often, it is in the person running it. In this episode of Internal Momentum, Ben sits down with Brandon Willington, founder of Where U?, to unpack why a business so often becomes a reflection of the person who owns it, and what has to change inside you before the numbers will move. Brandon shares how he walked away from a done-for-you agency model he never enjoyed and rebuilt everything around the one thing he could not get enough of. He opens up about leaving heavy drinking behind, along with the DJ persona that came with it, and the surprisingly practical steps that made it stick, from writing a letter to his old self to changing his Instagram handle, his wardrobe, and the rooms he worked in. He also reflects on the night a hotel balcony in Miami showed him how small his idea of a lot of money had been. Ben and Brandon explore the stories people tell themselves and then quietly prove right, why saying no is one of the most valuable skills an owner can build, and why so many businesses chase a new channel instead of doubling down on what is already working. Ben shares his own version, admitting he spent years telling everyone he did not care what people thought, precisely because he cared too much. They also explore the strange identity shift that comes with growth. The moment your most valuable work is sitting in a chair thinking, and it feels like goofing off. Why the version of you that built the business is not the version that can scale it. And why the way you do anything is the way you do everything, from how you train to who you hire. If you have ever hit the same ceiling in your business more than once and quietly wondered whether the problem might be you, this episode will show you where to start looking. About the Guest Brandon Willington is the founder of Where U?, a Perth-based business that teaches Australian business owners to build and run their own Meta and Google Ads rather than outsourcing their lead generation to an agency. Through hands-on workshops where owners launch their campaigns in the room, backed by ongoing support, he helps businesses take control of the system that brings in their customers. Ralph Brewer: The Dead Bedroom Fix
2026/10/03
Most men in a sexless marriage think the answer is to try harder. More often, trying harder is the problem. In this episode of Internal Momentum, Ben sits down with Ralph Brewer, author of The Dead Bedroom Fix and founder of Help For Men, to unpack why so many men end up in marriages where intimacy has quietly disappeared, and why the way back usually starts with the man rather than the bedroom. Ralph shares what it was like growing up with a deeply anxious mother, and how that shaped the way he loved as an adult. Constant reassurance seeking. Needing to fix every flicker of distress in his partner. He describes the pattern he now sees in almost every man who finds him: an anxious husband paired with an avoidant wife, two pieces that click together perfectly until one of them starts to change. It is why he says he could just as easily have called his book How To Be A More Secure Man. Ben and Ralph explore neediness, the covert contracts nice guys make without ever saying them out loud, and the pendulum swing from being walked all over to building walls too rigid to live behind. Ben opens up about the night he put the book down, stopped chasing, and watched it work within seconds, and about the breakup that forced him to find out who he was outside of being the husband, the dad, and the nice guy. They also talk about scarcity, taking women off the pedestal, and the difference between what you can control and what you cannot. Then comes the harder truth. For many men, doing the work does not save the marriage. It reveals that the relationship was built on the wrong foundation from the start. Ralph and Ben talk through why unconditional love belongs to parents and not partners, why a line only works when it is not a bluff, and why Ben sees his upcoming wedding as the first marriage where he has shown up as himself. If you have ever given more and more in a relationship while getting less and less back, this episode will show you where that pattern really starts, and what changes when you stop feeding it. About the Guest Ralph Brewer is the founder of Help For Men and the HFM Brotherhood, a private support community for men, and has been known online for more than a decade as Dad Starting Over. He is the author of The Dead Bedroom Fix and several other books helping men navigate sexless marriages, divorce, and starting over. Melanie Marshall: Trust Is Not About You
2026/09/30
Most people wait for permission before they back themselves. Some wait for decades. In this episode of Internal Momentum, Ben sits down with Melanie Marshall, Air Force veteran, business transformation strategist, and author of Trust and Adaptive Excellence, to unpack what it takes to back yourself, lead through uncertainty, and earn trust from people who have every reason to hold it back. Melanie shares what it was like spending years inside big organisations, from government departments to large private companies, and constantly being told she was too passionate, too vocal, too fast. She had never been around people who ran their own businesses and had never considered it, until one conversation made her question everything she thought a career had to look like. She opens up about the confidence wobbles that still show up every time she levels up, why she is more risk-averse than she would like to be, and the belief that carries her through them: you only get the opportunities you are ready for. Ben and Melanie explore the messier side of growth. Ben admits he has held back from growing his own business because he is scared of the bureaucracy that tends to come with it, and asks how to keep a team on board when you have lost confidence in the direction yourself. Melanie explains why you cannot get everyone on the same page without knowing what page they are on, why experts forget half the steps when they hand work over, and why your best people are often quietly burning out on work they are good at but hate. Then the conversation turns to trust. Ben confesses that the idea of someone not trusting him almost offends him. Melanie's answer is blunt. Trust is not about you. Together they unpack why every new relationship is paying for the sins of whoever came before, and why owning a mistake can build more trust than never making one. If you have ever been told you are too much for the role you are in, or held back from growing because of what growth might cost you, this episode will help you back yourself before anyone else does. About the Guest Melanie Marshall is an Air Force veteran, business transformation strategist, and founder of Adapt & Excel. Sam McComb: What You Believe You Become
2026/09/26
Some people change when life gets easier. Others change when life stops giving them a choice. In this episode of Internal Momentum, Ben sits down with Sam McComb, founder of Shade Eyewear, to unpack what it actually takes to rebuild yourself when the only thing you have left is what you believe. Sam shares how a plumbing apprenticeship in Melbourne turned into years of heavy partying, and how getting caught selling drugs at 24 finally forced him to see what his choices were doing to the people around him. He talks honestly about the slow road out of addiction, the drunken e-scooter crash that broke his face in the middle of Adelaide, and the two failed sunglasses brands, including a $60,000 purchase that went nowhere, that came before the business he runs today. Ben and Sam explore resilience, discipline, and why the gym trains your mind far more than your body. They talk about accountability, putting skin in the game, and why your nervous system keeps dragging you back to what is familiar, even when familiar is exactly what you are trying to escape. They also get into marketing, and why a scrappy video filmed on a balcony beat an expensive professional shoot. They also explore the quieter side of change. Speaking with certainty before the results show up, choosing to own who you are, and the difference between caring what people think and actually having an opinion of your own. Ben opens up about never wearing sunglasses because he did not feel cool enough to pull them off, and what shifted once he learnt to back his own choices. If you have ever failed more than once, felt dragged back into old patterns, or wondered whether you are the kind of person who gets back up, this episode will give you the push to have another crack. About the Guest Sam McComb is the founder of Shade Eyewear, a Gold Coast brand making durable plant-based acetate sunglasses and safety glasses built to last for years, not seasons. A former plumber, he started the business as a side hustle and now documents the journey publicly to help and inspire other people building something of their own. Martin Silva: Stop Fighting Your Food
2026/09/19
Everyone can see the body you have built. Nobody can see what it is costing you. In this episode of Internal Momentum, Ben sits down with Martin Silva, health optimisation coach and founder of Optimise Your Body, to unpack what happens when the pursuit of a perfect physique quietly turns into a fight with food, and what it takes for health to become who you are rather than something you battle every day. Martin shares how a skinny, insecure teenager from Wales found his way into lifting, then onto the physique competition stage, where an old school and overly restrictive plan left him swinging between strict control through the week and complete loss of control on the weekends. He reflects on the strange reality of being praised for looking his best while privately carrying guilt and shame, and on the slow process of unlearning the beliefs that got him there. Ben and Martin explore the all or nothing mindset, why the discipline that builds a business does not automatically carry over to health, and why dieting harder is rarely the answer. Ben opens up about years of losing weight and putting it back on, his fear of carbs, and a surprising realisation that eating the wrong food can feel like the one decision in his life that belongs to nobody else. Together they unpack protein, environment, and the difference between acting with intention and being hijacked. The deeper thread is identity. Ben shares the moment at a workshop where, at more than 130 kilograms, he created the possibility of being a fit and sexy man, and how that single shift made healthy behaviour stop feeling like an act. Martin explains why belief, evidence, and the people you surround yourself with matter more than any quick fix. If you have ever lost the weight and found it again, or felt like a fraud every time you walked into a gym, this episode will help you see why lasting change starts with who you believe you are. About the Guest Martin Silva is a Sydney-based health optimisation coach and the founder of Optimise Your Body. Cassandra Emmerson: Brands That Create Freedom
2026/09/12
Most people think a brand is a logo. The ones who believe that are working twice as hard as they need to. In this episode of Internal Momentum, Ben sits down with Cassandra Emmerson, brand strategist and founder of Emmersyn, to unpack what a brand actually is, what it costs to build one properly, and why the whole point of it is freedom. Cassandra shares what it finally took to walk away from the corporate world for the last time. Years of hitting the same ceiling, being allowed to be good but only so good, and then finding out while she was on annual leave with her mum that meetings about her own work were happening without her. She left weeks out from settling her first mortgage, after a lifetime of ideas she never executed because she did not believe she was good enough yet. Ben and Cassandra then get into brand itself. Why the logo is only a symbol for recognition while everything underneath it does the actual work, how a bucket of KFC ended up in her mother's kitchen after a lifetime of her never buying it, and why coherency is the thing that creates trust. They also talk about reputation, the quiet ripple that starts the moment a brand becomes inconsistent, and how expensive that is to reverse. Ben opens up about his own blind spots, including the years he spent hiding in the background and building on word of mouth because putting himself out there felt too exposed. Then the conversation lands somewhere neither of them planned, on freedom itself. Cassandra on working out the number she actually needs instead of the ideological one. Ben on how the pursuit of freedom can quietly become its own prison. If you have ever built something that works but could not say clearly what it stands for, this episode will give you a much sharper way to look at it. About the Guest Cassandra Emmerson is a Perth-based brand strategist and the founder of Emmersyn, where she works with founders to turn businesses into brands that make money and create freedom. She spent years in senior corporate brand roles before leaving to build her own practice, and now runs brand immersions, an advisory, and a three-phase framework covering recognition, connection, and aspirational branding. Catherine Bergsma: Without The Company Behind You
2026/09/05
Nearly twenty years of expertise walked out the door with her. The confidence stayed behind. In this episode of Internal Momentum, Ben sits down with Catherine Bergsma, founder of STREET Marketing, to unpack what actually changes when you leave a big agency, put your own name on the invoice, and find out which parts of you were borrowed from the company all along. Catherine started out wanting to be an actress and was told there was no money in it, so she went into advertising instead. That decision carried her through media, music, and years overseas before landing her at one of the biggest agencies in Western Australia, and later into client-side roles running major sponsorship campaigns. Decades in, running her own consultancy, she found that the skills came with her but the certainty did not. She shares the moment a client stopped her to ask why someone so good at the work went so awkward the second it came to saying the price out loud. Ben and Catherine explore what it costs to say yes to everything, why being the jack of all trades quietly confuses the people trying to buy from you, and how a network of genuinely capable people is what finally makes saying no possible. They also get into learning to let people down, the difference between a big brand budget and a small business one, and why the client who can least afford you is often the hardest one to serve. Underneath all of it sits identity. Ben talks about the years his business was so fused with who he was that every complaint landed like a personal failing, and what it took to let it become its own thing. Catherine talks about reaching a point in her career where she has earned the right to choose what she is known for. Together they land on a simple idea about money that changed how both of them price, invoice, and decide who to work with at all. If you have ever gone quiet in the moment you had to say your price out loud, this episode will make that moment feel a lot less personal. About the Guest Catherine Bergsma is the founder of STREET Marketing, a Perth-based marketing consultancy working with small and medium businesses across strategy, brand, social media, and paid campaigns. She spent close to two decades in agency and client-side marketing, including senior roles at Marketforce and national marketing and communications for Programmed, before building her own practice. Dr Robert Glover: Nice Is Not Honest
2026/08/29
Most men do not lie to get away with something. They lie so that nobody gets upset with them. In this episode of Internal Momentum, Ben sits down with Dr Robert Glover, author of No More Mr. Nice Guy, to unpack what the ceiling is actually made of when a man says he wants one thing and then does the complete opposite. Robert has been working on the pattern he named for thirty five years, and at seventy he still calls himself a recovering Nice Guy. He describes the voice that used to run in his head almost around the clock, the one he calls the lie coach, telling him what to leave out, what to soften, and how to keep everybody comfortable. He shares the affair he had during his second marriage, the ultimatum that sent him into therapy, and why he now sees that one failure as the reason the book exists at all. Ben and Robert explore honesty as the actual work. Telling the truth about what you want instead of earning it sideways. Making your own needs a priority without apology. What it costs a man to spend decades being agreeable rather than honest. Ben opens up about his own years as a nice guy, the relationship he walked away from and later returned to, and the swing to the opposite extreme that Robert calls the boundary kamikaze. The conversation then turns to the part most men resist. Robert makes the case that a man cannot get everything he needs from his partner, that a partner should receive what he calls his processed vulnerability rather than the raw version, and that the men who break through are the ones who stopped trying to do it on their own. He also reframes the mistakes people carry the most shame about as the only things they can truly call their own. If you have ever said yes when you meant no, or done something nice while quietly hoping it would be repaid, this episode will name the pattern out loud and show you what it takes to stop. About the Guest Dr Robert Glover is the author of No More Mr. Nice Guy, the book that named and defined the Nice Guy Syndrome. He holds a PhD in marriage and family therapy and practised for years as a licensed marriage and family therapist before moving into full time work with men. He now coaches, teaches, and runs small group workshops from his home in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, alongside an international membership community for men called Integration Nation. Gianni Michelini and Paul Siderovski: The Room Changes Everything
2026/08/27
Most people think a room is just a room. The people sitting in it decide what you believe is possible. In this episode of Internal Momentum, Ben sits down with Gianni Michelini and Paul Siderovski, the pair behind Fortuna One, the live event bringing Tony Robbins, Steven Bartlett and Gary Brecka to Australian stages in September, to unpack what actually shifts in a person when they walk into a room full of people playing a bigger game than they are. Paul explains how the whole thing started with one idea and one phone call, and how a kid from Waratah in Newcastle ended up in the room with people he had only ever watched from a distance. Gianni shares being at a party in Dubai and being too hesitant to say out loud what he was actually building, standing on a Greek island twenty years after he first saw it from a broken down scooter, and sitting at a breakfast table in Monaco where the man who invited him said he was the poorest person there. Both of them come back to the same point. The thing that changed was never the achievement. It was who they became while they were chasing it. Ben and the guests explore proximity as a strategy rather than a buzzword, why contribution opens more doors than any pitch ever will, and how to approach a room when you feel like you have nothing to offer yet. They also get practical about the part most business owners get stuck on: extracting the standard so the business stops depending on one person, the traffic light method for handing work over without the quality falling apart, and why a system of investing matters far more than picking the right asset. The deeper thread is the one Ben names about himself. He admits he has spent years chasing an enough he never actually defined, where the goal was only ever more, better and different. Gianni and Paul argue that an undefined number is not ambition, it is suffering, and that the fix is to give the business a job, name the freedom number, and stop waiting for permission to enjoy the life you are already living. The conversation also lands on labels, and how the internal ones do far more damage than anything anyone else calls you. If you have ever chased a number you never actually put on paper, or stood at the edge of a room talking yourself out of the conversation you came to have, this episode will give you a much clearer way to think about both. About the Guests Gianni Michelini is the chief executive of Fortuna One. His career began in music, taking him from a first record deal to studios around the world, founding the National Music Academy in Newcastle, and leading the Abbey Road Institute in Australia after partnering with Abbey Road in London. He also drives strategy and operations across the LimitlessX ecosystem and has a book for young people on the way. Paul Siderovski is a Newcastle entrepreneur, chartered accountant and strategist who has founded businesses across accounting, property, media, coaching and live events, including SiDCOR Chartered Accountants, EXP Capital and ODIS Strategy. He was sacked from a director role early in his career and describes it as the turning point that led to everything after it. His central idea is that a real business is not built around you, it is built to outlast you. Essam Elmir: There Is Always Another Trade
2026/08/26
Some people spend years building a profile. Others quietly build the network everyone else ends up needing. In this episode of Internal Momentum, Ben sits down with Essam Elmir, Head of Ecosystem at Fortuna One, to unpack what more than a decade in crypto and fifteen years of community building actually teaches you about people, money, and the discipline it takes to hold your nerve. Essam got into Bitcoin as a teenager, a self-described nerdy kid who hacked handheld consoles and then went down the rabbit hole when a school friend asked whether some coins he had mined years earlier could be recovered. From there it was Ethereum white papers, a Chinese project translated line by line through Google Translate, and years of learning the hard way. He describes trades that went seven figures, losses that took weeks to process, and being banned from banks simply for buying and selling crypto before anyone understood it. He also describes something less comfortable. He was in the room early, he knew the biggest names in the space when they had a few hundred followers, and he never put his own face forward. Ben and Essam explore the part of trading nobody puts on a highlight reel. What actually separates the top one percent is not chart reading, it is emotional control. They talk about the gambling loop, the ego that builds during a bull run and the drop that humbles you, and why one good friend's line about there always being another trade changed how Essam approaches risk. Ben opens up about his own crypto years, the days his mood was set by a chart, and the sell orders that never executed while he watched the market fall. The conversation then widens into the thing underneath both stories. Fear of being seen. Ben talks honestly about twenty years of capping his own business because visibility felt dangerous. Essam talks about the opportunity he watched pass while he stayed behind the scenes, and what he does differently now. They finish on community, execution, and why the small consistent gestures, the comment, the call, the follow up, quietly compound into everything else. If you have ever watched people with a fraction of your experience build a much bigger name than yours, this episode will name exactly what has been holding you back and what it costs to keep waiting. About the Guest Essam Elmir is the Head of Ecosystem at Fortuna One, where he builds and runs the community behind the events. He has been in cryptocurrency for over a decade, starting as a teenager mining early coins, and has spent around fifteen years building communities across crypto, trading, and now artificial intelligence. His focus sits on connection, education, and helping people get past the fear of asking the obvious question. Mustafa Allawi: The Stories That Shape Us
2026/08/25
Every person is living inside a story. Almost nobody stops to ask who wrote it. In this episode of Internal Momentum, Ben sits down with Mustafa Allawi, founder and CEO of the global film and creative company Hazen, to explore how stories shape identity, behaviour, and what a person believes is possible for themselves. Mustafa left Iraq at fifteen and learnt English watching films. There are childhood friends he would not know how to find today. He talks about what it does to a person to leave parts of themselves behind in different places, and why that same process happens to everyone, even the ones who never move. It is the reason he ended up in storytelling, and it is the lens he now brings to working with people like James Cameron and Tony Robbins, where the main discovery has been that everybody wears their pants the same way. Ben and Mustafa work through the three kinds of stories that build an identity. The ones you tell yourself, the ones told to you by culture and family, and the ones other people tell about you. Ben opens up about the years he cast his ex-wife as the villain of his own life and himself as the hero, and the confronting conversation that finally broke the cycle. Mustafa presses him on how anyone actually gets there, and Ben names the tell that gives it away every time: righteousness. The conversation then turns inward on Ben. He talks about being the overweight, shy kid who would take no position on anything rather than risk one person disliking him. He talks about the half-written album sitting on Spotify that he has never told a single person about, and about stopping mid-song at the traffic lights in case a stranger in the next car saw him. He also names what it took to rebuild that identity on purpose, and why the ceiling on your income, your health, and your relationships is almost always sitting on the inside. If you have ever caught yourself as the hero of a story that needs somebody else to be the villain, this episode will make that story much harder to keep telling. About the Guest Mustafa Allawi is the founder and CEO of Hazen, a global film and creative company that tells unseen stories through documentary and brand work for an international audience. He arrived in Australia from Iraq as a teenager and built a career around a single belief, that nothing shapes people more than the stories they carry. His work has placed him alongside names including James Cameron, Tony Robbins, and Bassem Youssef. Patricia Almeida: Success Without Self-Love
2026/08/15
You can achieve everything you set out to achieve. And still feel completely empty when you get there. In this episode of Internal Momentum, Ben sits down with Patricia Almeida, a life coach, NLP trainer, and certified Advanced Wim Hof Method instructor, to unpack what it actually costs to live life on autopilot, and what it takes to find your way back. Patricia shares what happened when she reached almost everything she had set out to achieve in her corporate HR career, and still felt hollow inside. She reflects on the decision to leave her career and her familiar environment, travel overseas, and spend years in meditation, retreats, and self-development work trying to find out what was missing. She opens up about lacking self-love for most of her adult life without ever realising it, and what it actually took to reconnect with who she really was underneath the mask she had been wearing. Ben and Patricia explore why ice baths and cold exposure work as a mirror for whatever a person is suppressing, and why the discomfort of the cold reveals patterns that show up everywhere else in life too. They talk about self-sabotage, procrastination, and the quiet forms of self-destruction that hide behind a life that looks successful from the outside. Ben opens up about his own struggle with discernment and decision-making, and Patricia walks him through a live coaching moment using her own techniques, right there in the conversation. They also unpack the difference between chasing one defined purpose and simply living with intent, and why waiting to discover a single life mission can keep people stuck rather than moving. Patricia shares the small daily practices she uses to shift her state, calibrate her decisions, and stay aligned with her values, the same tools she now teaches her own clients. If you have ever achieved everything you thought you wanted and still felt something was missing, this episode will give you a way back to yourself. About the Guest Patricia Almeida is a Perth-based life coach, NLP trainer, and certified Advanced Wim Hof Method instructor. She runs a one-to-one coaching practice built on her own S.H.I.F.T. Method and leads public Wim Hof Method workshops across Perth, combining breathwork, cold exposure, and mindset training to help people reconnect with themselves and live with purpose.
