The morning after Brandon Swanson disappeared, a bloodhound pressed its nose to his abandoned car and set off across the Minnesota farmland. The trail wandered for miles, plunged into the rushing Yellow Medicine River, and then, picked back up on the other side before ending at a gravel road. Some investigators believed Brandon had drowned, but his parents' doubted the theory. Eighteen years of searches have brought cadaver dogs, a bone that wasn't his, and a drought that finally emptied the river itself. But none of it has brought Brandon home. In May 2008, 19-year-old Brandon Swanson called his parents to say his car had slid off the road and he needed a ride. He swore he knew exactly where he was. But when his parents' flashing headlights never found him, Brandon started walking toward town, his father still on the line, until he yelled two words and went silent. What began as a routine favor became one of Minnesota's most confounding disappearances: an officer who said Brandon had a "right to be missing," his car found twenty-five miles from where he swore he was, and almost two hours of his final night that no one has ever explained. For more than three decades, the disappearance of Michaela "Kayla" Garecht drew false confessions, dead-end digs, and a parade of suspects. A lying jailhouse tipster, a convicted child killer, the notorious "Speed Freak Killers" and a well full of bones. Before finally, a partial palm print was pulled from Kayla's scooter. Each lead raised her family's hopes; each one broke their hearts. Decades after a stranger drove her away, a charge would finally name a suspect, even as a mother refused to stop searching for the truth about what happened to her daughter. On the Saturday before Thanksgiving in 1988, nine-year-old Michaela "Kayla" Garecht and her best friend rode their scooters two blocks to a Hayward, California corner store for candy and soda. Minutes later, in a busy parking lot in broad daylight, a stranger grabbed Kayla, forced her into a car, and drove off. What began as an ordinary morning became one of California's most haunting disappearances: an eyewitness account that should have cracked the case, a crucial early mistake that sent police chasing the wrong man, and a trail that went cold before it ever got warm. In the fall of 1992, 14-year-old Misty Copsey vanished after a night at the Puyallup Fair. For months the police wrote her off as a runaway until her clothes surfaced along Highway 410. Only then did the real investigation begin. Persons of interest drifted in and out of focus over the years, alongside polygraphs, false leads, and an amateur investigator whose obsession with the case may have done as much harm as good. Decades later, an unknown man's DNA is one of the only tangible traces left, yet no one has ever been charged in Misty's disappearance. On September 17, 1992, 14-year-old Misty Copsey went to the Puyallup Fair in Washington with her best friend and never came home. The two girls missed the 8:40 PM bus back to Spanaway and split up to find their own way. The last anyone saw of Misty, she was standing alone near a bus stop after dark, told there were no more buses on her route that night. Then she walked off, and vanished. Leading to a decades long mystery. If you’re new here, don’t forget to follow The Final Hours to never miss a case! To hear episodes ad-free and released early, subscribe to Crime House+. In October 1961, 31-year-old Joan Risch vanished from her home in Lincoln, Massachusetts, leaving behind a blood-smeared kitchen and a telephone ripped from the wall. There was no body and no sign of forced entry, but there were fingerprints on the wall that seemingly weren't hers. Some witnesses reported a dazed, bleeding woman wandering a nearby highway that afternoon. Others pointed to the stack of library books Joan had checked out about staged disappearances. But more than sixty years later, her case still remains unsolved. If you’re new here, don’t forget to follow The Final Hours to never miss a case! On October 24, 1961, 31-year-old Joan Risch spent an ordinary morning at home in Lincoln, Massachusetts. She took her daughter to the dentist, booked a follow-up appointment, and later walked her to a neighbor's house, promising she'd be right back. She never returned. When someone finally stepped inside her home, they found the kitchen smeared with blood, the telephone torn from the wall, and Joan was missing. In September 1992, 27-year-old Su Taraskiewicz was found murdered in the trunk of her own car. Her journal pointed suspicion back toward the men she worked alongside, but the truth was tangled in something bigger: a federal probe into a stolen credit-card ring run out of Logan. Over the years, the FBI, a federal grand jury, and a $250,000 reward all circled the same small group of names. But without enough evidence to charge anyone, no one was ever convicted of Su's murder. On September 13, 1992, 27-year-old Su Taraskiewicz left her overnight shift at Boston's Logan Airport to grab sandwiches for her crew and never made it home. The next day, her body was found in the trunk of her own car. As a ramp supervisor and one of the few women on a mostly male crew at Northwest Airlines, Su had spent months enduring a workplace that turned against her. There were taunts, sabotage, and threats she faced just for doing her job well. Eventually her mother uncovered something that reframed the case: a journal, where Su had documented the harassment page after page, naming the men who made her days a struggle. On March 19, 2004, 17-year-old Brianna Maitland finished her shift at the Black Lantern Inn in Vermont and drove into the night. An hour later, her car was seen backed into an abandoned farmhouse on a rural stretch of Route 118. When police got there, they found her belongings still inside. But there was no crash, no struggle, and no Brianna. Two decades later, investigators have never publicly named a suspect, though rumors about local criminal networks have never stopped circulating. This is the story of a young woman who left work and drove into a mystery Vermont has never solved. If you’re new here, don’t forget to follow The Final Hours to never miss a case! On February 10, 1984, 10-year-old Kevin Collins left basketball practice in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood and began the short walk to the public bus stop. Witnesses recalled seeing him speaking with a tall man with a large dog, and then he was gone. Despite a massive search in the San Francisco area, with his face plastered on milk cartons and the cover of Newsweek, no physical trace of Kevin was ever found. A convicted child predator was questioned by police in 1984 but released after witnesses failed to identify him in a lineup. No one has ever been prosecuted for Kevin's disappearance. Kevin Collins became one of the most recognizable faces in America — a face millions saw at breakfast, and yet no one ever saw again.
