Rev. Barbara Ann Michaels: Humor As the Harbinger of Hope
2026/10/29
Send us Fan Mail
You can be exhausted, heartbroken, and still human enough to laugh again and that tiny laugh might be the first sign you are coming back to yourself. I sit down with Rev. Barbara Ann Michaels, an award-winning interfaith minister and professional clown, to talk about what humor really does when life is brutal: it does not erase the pain, it puts space around it so you can breathe, feel, and keep going.
Barbara shares the story behind Humorville, her immersive interactive art “municipality” in Brooklyn designed for humor and wellness. Picture a post office, a library, a voting booth, a marriage bureau, and a phone booth where you “call” what you have been avoiding. It sounds absurd on purpose, because play and absurdity can slip past perfectionism and performance, letting people say the truest thing in the room. Her guiding line says it all: “You can only do it right at Humorville.”
We dig into caregiver burnout, grief, and why “too soon” matters. Barbara breaks down the “first laugh” as a physiological and spiritual turning point, the moment healing becomes possible. We also name the traps: laughing at others, or using jokes to dodge the hard talk, versus laughing with each other as a community practice that restores connection. From “hard then, funny now” stories to the “unlived life” question of what we are healing for, this conversation is packed with practical reframes for resilience, mental health, and identity beyond labels.
If any part of you is reaching for hope, hit play, share this with someone who needs a breath, and subscribe so you do not miss what comes next. After you listen, what is one thing you want more of in your life right now?

#9 Companion A Brain Injury Survivor’s Guide To Pacing And Preemptive Rest
2026/10/27
Send us Fan Mail
Your brain can look “fine” on the outside while it fights a silent battle on the inside. I sit down with Matt Galati, a med student turned living proof of resilience after a serious car accident and severe brain injury, to talk about what recovery actually feels like when cognitive fatigue becomes the hidden driver of your day.
We get specific about the moments people miss: how a short clinical appointment can fail to capture the real cost of ordinary tasks at home, why processing “simple” events can drain a brain injury survivor, and how caregivers can slide into burnout without noticing the warning signs. We also dig into practical tools like a cognitive fatigue map for catching early signals before exhaustion turns into crisis, plus the value of pacing and preemptive rest so you are not stuck in constant emergency recovery mode.
We connect these ideas to brain health habits that support healing and function, including Matt’s emphasis on building around realistic hope. You will walk away with clearer language for what you are experiencing, a more proactive plan for managing cognitive load, and a simple way to bring better information to your care team, like three daily life facts and one recovery goal.
If this resonates, listen through, grab the companion, and share it with someone who needs it. Subscribe, leave a review, and tell us what early warning sign you want to start tracking first.

The Thin Line Between Care And Control
2026/10/22
Send us Fan Mail
A conservator refuses to sign consent for a pregnancy termination because of personal religious beliefs, so a client’s medical decision gets pushed into probate court. That’s where we start, because it captures the core tension we keep running into as fiduciaries and clinicians: the line between protection and control is thin, and the stakes are painfully human.
From there, we unpack a case that forces the hardest question in mental health caregiving and medical ethics: what does capacity look like when someone is floridly psychotic and refusing cancer diagnostics and treatment? We talk through how schizophrenia, paranoia, and delusions can distort “choice,” why hospitals and doctors get nervous about liability when someone is conserved, and how involuntary psychiatric treatment can sometimes restore enough stability for real informed consent. The result isn’t a neat happy ending, but it is a path back to dignity and a plan that matches the person’s values.
We also get into exploitation in the community: a former caregiver who returns and squats in a client’s apartment, the risk of eviction, and how loneliness makes predatory relationships hard to untangle even when everyone can see what’s happening. Then we zoom out to harm reduction and quality of life decisions, including the uncomfortable reality that taking away the one thing someone enjoys can create its own kind of harm. Finally, we cover court-ordered discharges that go sideways, the importance of a real safety net, and why “wellness checks” without eyes on can miss escalating danger.
If you’ve ever felt trapped between someone’s rights and your responsibility to keep them safe, you’ll hear yourself in these stories. Subscribe, share this with a caregiver or provider who needs it, and leave a review with the line you think should never be crossed.

The Kidz Are Alright (Kinda) with My Kids
2026/10/20
Send us Fan Mail
The kids are not confused about what they need. They’re tired of performing, tired of being reduced to a checklist, and tired of pretending the pressure isn’t real when the “social mirror” lives in their pockets 24/7.
We sit down with five young people spanning ages 13 to 23 and ask the questions adults usually dodge: Do you feel watched at school? What kind of support actually helps? Is a mental health app enough when your chest is tight and your brain won’t shut off? You’ll hear how real friendship creates safety, why asking for help can feel harder than finding help, and how embarrassment, perfectionism, and fear of judgment show up in everyday moments. We also talk about teen mental health, youth mental health awareness, and the double-edged reality of social media and mental health, including how it can reduce stigma while fueling comparison.
We go deeper into what schools and systems get wrong, from separating kids with specialized needs to skipping life skills that many students never learn at home. Faith shares what it’s like when professionals see a diagnosis on a screen instead of the whole person, and Jake reflects on the challenge of naming feelings as a young adult leader in the military. We end with a reminder that positive mental health is a daily practice, and that presence beats perfection every time.
If this conversation hits home, subscribe, share it with a parent or educator, and leave a review so more families can find it. What’s one piece of “head trash” you want to clear out this week?

#8 Companion Caregiver Myths, Real Limits
2026/10/20
Send us Fan Mail
The fastest way to get stuck as a caregiver is to cling to “simple” legal lines that feel protective but turn out to be misleading. We are taking a short midweek pause to unpack a past conversation on caregiver misconceptions and to give you a practical tool you can use right away: a companion worksheet built for real life, not perfect timelines.
We zoom back in on the big myths that routinely derail families, including misunderstandings about HIPAA, guardianship, capacity and incapacity, and the way medication decisions actually unfold. Instead of treating paperwork like a magic key, we talk about what these legal roles can and cannot guarantee and why families are too often blamed for outcomes that no document could control. If you have ever felt guilt when “doing everything right” still does not fix the situation, you are not alone, and you are not failing.
We also focus on the questions that bring clarity when things feel chaotic: what is your loved one’s baseline, what does crisis look like for them, where are they living, what is their usual level of functioning, and what changes when they decompensate? We even touch a simple but powerful HIPAA truth that lowers stress fast: listening is not disclosing.
Grab the companion link in the episode description, listen with it in hand, and keep your notes for the next appointment or family meeting. If this helps, subscribe, share the episode with a caregiver friend, and leave a review so more families can find it.

Nesh Pillay: Be Kind To Little Man
2026/10/15
Send us Fan Mail
A brain injury can steal your past without touching your personality, and that gap is where so many families get lost. I sit down with Nesh Pillay, known from Amazon Prime’s 50,000 First Dates, to talk about what amnesia and traumatic brain injury actually feel like from the inside, including the strange reality of knowing facts about your life while lacking the “video playback” most people assume memory is.
We dig into Nesh’s “little man in the basement” analogy for memory access, why time can stop feeling real, and how photos and videos become an external hard drive for someone with episodic memory loss. We also get practical about living and working with TBI: disclosure at work, stigma that confuses cognitive symptoms with intelligence, and the tools that help, from ruthless planning to adaptive supports like AI. If you care for someone with brain injury, this part matters because it shows what can be worked around and what simply needs rest.
The heart of the conversation is caregiving and relationships. We talk about grief for the person who used to be, the quiet guilt on both sides, the risk of resentment, and why trust becomes non-negotiable when someone can’t always rely on their own brain. Nesh shares what acceptance looks like in real life, why therapy helps both caregiver and loved one, and why asking for help is not weakness. Subscribe, share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review with one takeaway you want more people to hear.

#7 Companion Caregiver Burnout Is Information
2026/10/13
Send us Fan Mail
Dementia doesn’t just change memory. It changes family roles, daily math, and the emotional weather in your house. On this midweek unpack, I step back into one of our most downloaded conversations, the Daughter’s Guide to Dementia and Caregiver Burnout Recovery, and pull out the parts that land hardest for so many of us: the moment you realize you’ve become the coordinator, the financial helper, and the safety planner for the parent who once did that for you.
I also share something we didn’t have ready when the original conversation aired: a companion PDF guide built specifically to help you process what you’re carrying. This isn’t “homework” or another box to check. It’s a short, practical way to slow down, name the emotions under the noise (guilt, fear, resentment, grief, safety worries), and figure out what’s actually happening in your care plan. Dementia caregiving often brings grief long before death, and pretending that isn’t true can quietly fuel caregiver stress and burnout.
We talk about long-distance caregiving in a transient world, why burnout is not a lack of love, and how sustainable care comes from honest limits, coordinated support, and specific requests. If you’ve been trying to be strong by doing it all, this is your reminder that “too much” is a signal, not a verdict.
Listen with the guide in hand, then subscribe, share this with a caregiver who needs it, and leave a review so more families can find real support.

Claude Racine: Postpartum Is Not The Baby Blues
2026/10/08
Send us Fan Mail
The postpartum period can look normal from the outside while it feels like a full-body emergency on the inside. After the headlines around the Lindsay Clancy case, I wanted a real conversation about what postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety can actually feel like, why people minimize it, and how fast a new parent can lose their sense of self.
Claude Racine joins me with raw honesty. She’s a former professional dancer and choreographer turned wellness advocate, and she describes going from relentless hustle and “I don’t need help” independence to panic, grief, and intrusive thoughts just days after giving birth. We talk about the pressure to perform motherhood, the reality of breastfeeding stress and sleep deprivation, and the hardest truth: when you’re scared of your own mind, “you’ll be fine” is not support. Claude explains what she needed most from loved ones, what partners often miss, and why acknowledgement and steady presence matter more than perfect advice.
Claude was diagnosed with Hashimoto's. Working with a
functional nutritionist, she reversed the autoimmune disease, lost 35 pounds, and felt like herself again. That experience lit a fire in her — she got certified in
functional nutrition and built a practice helping over 1,000 women lose weight, reverse chronic illness, and come off psych meds.
But three years in, Claude noticed the thing she built to help women was quietly costing her the two relationships she cared about most: her marriage and her presence as a mom. So in February 2024, she closed her business. Not because it wasn't working — but because she realized her power was better spent as a wife and mother than as a founder.
We also get into the gut brain connection, inflammation, and how her health journey uncovered autoimmune issues that changed her recovery plan. From there, Claude shares the second arc many caregivers recognize: swapping pain for productivity, chasing success as a coping strategy, and then deciding to rebuild life around being present as a mom and a wife. You can find her at “Glow Up with Claude,” and she and her husband create relatable marriage and parenting content as “the Velinskys” on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.
@thevalinskys
@glowupwithclaude and @scientologylv for anyone curious or wanting to know more about Scientology!
These days, you'll find Claude volunteering at her church, creating funny (and
hopefully relatable) content with her husband about marriage and parenthood, and choreographing alongside him for work. Her mission now isn't just about impact in
one area of her life — it's about showing up fully in all of them: as a wife, a mom, a creator, and a woman who finally gave herself permission to slow down.
If this conversation helps, subscribe, share it with a new parent, and leave a review so more families find real postpartum mental health support. What’s one thing you wish people understood about postpartum?

Send us Fan Mail
Client choice can feel like a clean principle right up until the moment symptoms surge, risk rises, and everyone around the person feels responsible for the outcome. I walk through why that moment becomes an ethical tightrope for legal advocates, clinicians, providers, peers, and family members and how quickly “help” can turn into control when we confuse disagreement with incapacity. If you care about mental health advocacy, disability rights, informed consent, and ethical crisis response, this conversation is built for you.
We dig into the practical work of preserving someone’s autonomy when psychosis or impairment is part of the picture. That starts with protecting the person’s voice: their values, their words, their fears, and their goals, captured clearly instead of overwritten by other people’s opinions. We also talk about the power of documentation and why observable facts and timing beat vague labels like “noncompliant” or “difficult.” When you focus on what happened and when it happened, you create clarity across systems and reduce the chances of a rushed, assumption-driven decision.
I also explain why disagreement across family members, lawyers, clinicians, providers, and even courts does not automatically mean bad faith. Often it means people are doing their jobs, with different duties pulling in different directions. As a lawyer, that conflict is especially sharp because my role is to do what my client wants, not what everyone else thinks they need.

Allan Houston and Tamara Houston: What Does Radical Acceptance Look Like At Home
2026/10/01
Send us Fan Mail
A hospital discharge can look like “problem solved” on paper while a family is still staring at the real question: where does our loved one safely go next? We sit down with Allan and Tamara Houston for a candid, grounded conversation about opening their home to Tamara’s sister Jill during a crisis, while raising seven kids and trying to keep their household steady. What unfolds is a rare look at family caregiving that is both tender and practical.
We talk about the moment the decision stops being “should we help” and becomes “how are we going to do this,” plus what it takes to prepare children for a major change without fear or secrecy. Tamara explains why a family meeting mattered, how they set expectations, and how they made space for Jill’s recovery while keeping their kids’ comfort a priority. Alan shares what it feels like to recognize the gaps in mental health care and to learn, in real time, what support Jill was not getting before.
We also dig into the nuts and bolts caregivers live with every day: transportation, appointments, coordination across systems, and the power of asking for help with specific requests. Along the way, we come back to a phrase that captures the heart of mental health caregiving: radical acceptance, paired with firm boundaries that protect everyone involved.
If you’re navigating schizophrenia, developmental disabilities, crisis planning, or long-term family caregiving, this conversation offers a clear path forward: love, acceptance, and hope, backed by real support. Subscribe, share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review with the one takeaway you’re bringing into your own home.

#5 Companion If You Say Calm Down, We Fight
2026/09/29
Send us Fan Mail
Your nervous system can’t “just calm down” if it’s still scanning for danger. We do a midweek unpack of our conversation with Danielle Worthen Cullenberg, and it’s one of those talks that puts words to what so many neurodivergent and sensory-sensitive people feel every day: the body stays on high alert long after the immediate threat has passed.
We dig into “neurospicy” brains, sensory overload, trauma, and the invisible weight of caregiving pressure, then connect the dots to real-life patterns like vigilance, shutdown, avoidance, and control. Instead of treating dysregulation like bad behavior or a character flaw, we talk about nervous system regulation as a learnable process starting with awareness. The simplest shift is also the hardest: stop demanding calm and start getting curious about triggers, environments, and needs.
We also share a practical tool to help you put this into action, including a nervous system map that helps you catch early signals before you hit a breaking point, and prompts that explore what changes when stress becomes the atmosphere of a home. One of the biggest takeaways we keep coming back to is this: accommodations aren’t special treatment, they’re often the reason participation is even possible.
If anything here hits home, listen to the full conversation, try the Listener Action Guide, and then share it with someone who needs a gentler path to regulation. Subscribe, leave a review, and tell us: what’s the earliest sign your system is getting overloaded?

Annette: A Mother Learns That Survival Is Not The Same As Living
2026/09/24
Send us Fan Mail
Severe mental illness can turn a household into a command center overnight. One day you’re parenting, working, and planning for the future. The next day you’re tracking symptoms, bracing for outbursts, negotiating with hospitals, and trying to protect the people you love while you quietly disappear inside the role of “crisis manager.”
We talk with Annette, a mother who lived that reality for years as her son’s behavior escalated from early warning signs to frightening instability complicated by substance use. We get specific about what families rarely say out loud: the isolation, the financial and career sacrifices, the exhausting search for effective therapy and psychiatric medication combinations, and the toll on siblings and marriage. Annette shares how her younger son carries real PTSD from growing up in the blast radius, and why boundaries in adulthood can be both heartbreaking and necessary.
Then we focus on what helped: building a coordinated care team, setting realistic expectations about the mental health system, and documenting a clear timeline to find a baseline and measure change. Most importantly, we talk about what happens after the crisis loosens its grip. Annette describes returning to creativity, rebuilding purpose, and growing Towny Swag into a business and storefront that represents joy, identity, and forward motion without denying the past.
If you’re supporting a loved one with severe mental illness, you’re not alone and you’re not failing. Subscribe, share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review with the one takeaway you want more families to hear.

Historic town square.
A ridiculous urban legend.
The hole-in-the-wall ice cream shop where all the kids hung out.
Or simply the eccentric old lady at the end of the street...
There’s a lot of intrigue sprinkled into the towns of America. If you had the pleasure to
live in (or endure) one of these delightfully distinctive ‘burbs, there’s an element of pride
rooted within, whether you’re a transplant or a permanent resident.
TownieSwag invites you to celebrate your hometown roots with gift items (including
totes, pillows, tea towels, aprons, bottle bags, and more) that showcase the local
character only true Townies ‘get.’
Your Roots. Your Town. Your Swag.

Reclaim Calm in the Chaos: Time Mastery with Walt Hampton
2026/09/17
Send us Fan Mail
What if “busy” is the shield that keeps you from what you most need? We sat down with Walt Hampton—executive coach, author of The Power Principles of Time Mastery, and long-distance runner—to rethink time, energy, and the stories we tell ourselves about balance. This is a lifeline for caregivers, creators, and leaders who feel stretched thin and want a sustainable way to show up for others without burning out.
We unpack the 80/20 principle and why a tiny set of actions creates the majority of your results. Walt shows how to identify your “one thing,” build a weekly plan tied to your core values, and use a 90-day focus to turn big goals into simple steps. You’ll hear how to set clean boundaries, craft a not-to-do list that actually sticks, and navigate seasons when family needs eclipse everything else—without abandoning your own oxygen mask.
Habits are the bridge. We talk about anchoring new routines to existing ones, why discipline outlasts motivation, and how to clear “head trash” by starting with want-to and why before asking how. If your circle isn’t supportive, we explore finding accountability partners and communities that normalize your new standard. And yes, we reveal Walt’s favorite F-word: fun. Joy isn’t an add-on; it’s the fuel that makes focus, caregiving, and creative work sustainable.
Walk away with practical steps you can use today: one microscopic habit to anchor, one boundary to draw, and one item to add to your not-to-do list. If you’re ready to do less, make more impact, and feel lighter while you do it, this conversation belongs on your calendar. If it resonates, subscribe, leave a review, and share it with someone who needs a gentler way forward.

# 3 Episode Companion Memory Is Not A Care Plan When Stress Hits
2026/09/15
Send us Fan Mail
Caregiving can feel like being the only person holding the whole system in your head and it’s exhausting for reasons most people never see. We unpack what happens when you’re expected to remember every detail, translate a loved one to rushed medical teams, and keep your cool while anxiety is doing laps in your body. If you’ve ever left an appointment and thought, “I should have said that,” you’ll recognize yourself here.
We walk through a practical companion to “This Is What It Takes,” starting with the invisible caregiver loop: the tasks and worries that replay nonstop and eat up your working memory. Together, we talk about getting those responsibilities onto paper, then choosing what you can delegate, automate, or simplify using everyday tools. This is caregiver support that respects reality, not another impossible checklist.
We also get specific about dignity-centered crisis planning: documenting baseline behavior, spotting early warning signs, and defining crisis thresholds before everything turns into an emergency. We touch on planning ahead for the “turning 18” shift around records access and decision-making, plus why an ER-ready summary sheet can change how fast a medical team understands what’s going on. Our bottom line is simple: memory is not a care plan, especially under stress.
Listen, download the free PDF companion, and try one small action this week. If it helps, subscribe, share this with a caregiver you love, and leave a review so more people can find practical caregiving tools that actually work.

Kala Allen Omeiza: I Got Bullied In An Autism Lab
2026/09/10
Send us Fan Mail
Watching someone succeed can fool us into thinking they’re fine. Then Kala Allen Omeiza says something that stops us cold: she worked in top autism research spaces and still didn’t learn she was autistic until 24, after a painful rupture, a mental health crisis, and therapy that finally connected the dots.
We talk about what late autism diagnosis can look like when you’re a high achiever: sensory overload that gets dismissed, social communication gaps that get mislabeled, and the quiet burnout that builds when you’re always “passing.” Kala shares the irony of being bullied for autistic traits inside an autism research lab, and what it took to move from self-protection and academic distance to honest lived experience.
From there we dig into her nonfiction book Autistic and Black, built from interviews with Black autistic people across a wide range of support needs, and the Kwanzaa principle Ujima, collective responsibility. We also map the real-world gaps in mental health care across the US, the UK, and Nigeria, from cost barriers to long waitlists to severe shortages of psychiatrists and the way stigma can turn crisis into a “spiritual” problem instead of a healthcare one. Kayla closes with what she’s building through I’m Heard Incorporated and why family-level support has to be the next frontier.
If you care about autism, neurodiversity, mental health access, suicide prevention, and building systems that actually listen, hit play. Subscribe, share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review with the part that stayed with you.
