Caye Caulker: The Go-Slow Appeal & What To Skip — Still Worth It?
2026/10/26
🌍 The Caribbean's most famous budget island, checked against its own paperwork. 2026 has produced ZERO Atlantic hurricanes — the first time since 1914 the basin has reached late September without one — under a Pacific warm event the Climate Prediction Center gives a 75% chance of being the strongest since 1950. Nothing has touched Belize this year. The season still runs to 30 November.
💰 The bed held; the boat did not. Hostel beds advertise at $11.06–$17, yet the crossing from Belize City is $29–$32 one way on the operators' own engines — so the ride costs more than five nights of sleeping there. Round trips save about $21 over two singles. Four hotels publish rates: Colinda from $119, Sea Dreams $145 + 9%, Seaside Cabanas $155–$315, Iguana Reef $199–$559. Ten of fourteen publish nothing, and no hostel publishes a dorm rate on its own site. Hotel tax is 9%; the rise to 12.5% is only a proposal. Leaving Belize costs $73.50 on the ticket.
🎯 Three traps. One: the $18 Belize travel health insurance is NOT required — optional since 14 July 2022 on the Tourism Board's own notice, and the official portal has suspended sales. Two: park fees differ by reserve — Hol Chan $15/head since Aug 2024, Blue Hole and Half Moon Caye BZ$60 + BZ$20 (the $40 your dive shop includes), while Caye Caulker Marine Reserve publishes no fee anywhere in the Fisheries Department's 197-page plan. Three: San Pedro Belize Express publishes its airport shuttle at $25 on its FAQ and charges $35 at its own checkout, plus a $1.50 port fee and a processing fee that ran 11% on one booking and 22% on another.
✅ Of Tripadvisor's 125 ranked things to do, 25 carry 150+ reviews and 20 clear 4.5 — and the most-reviewed place fails. The Split rates 4.1 from 572 with a Travellers' Choice badge; Frenchie's, the biggest dive operator at 907 reviews, rates 4.3 on both platforms. Caveman tops it at 4.9 from 2,307. Below position 81 nothing reaches 100 reviews, and Big Fish Dive Center still ranks at #120 with no review since September 2016.
🗺️ Also here: both operators raised fares in April 2026 and the Belize Port Authority says it never approved it — still under review on 22 July, nothing published since; Four Seasons Caye Chapel has slipped to 2027 after 2021, 2025 and 2026; no sewer until roughly 2030; a power cable laid in October 2025 never announced as energised; and 357 short-term rentals averaging $188 a night across just 128 hosts. Honest absences are named with who was checked: no restaurant menu, no dorm rate, no bike rate, no caye-level crime figure, no evacuation price, no island water-quality result, no 2027 sargassum forecast.
Five verdicts out of ten. The lowest goes to the luxury traveller — and the closing line is a price nobody on the island publishes.

Naoshima: Art-Island Demand, Timed Entry & Thin Beds — Worth It?
2026/10/25
🌍 The most photographed art island in the world, checked. The Town of Naoshima's own survey counts 1,128,353 facility admissions in 2025 — a record — against 749,493 in 2024, and 2,847 residents on the town's own register at 1 April 2026: about 396 admissions per islander, though the table counts admissions, not people. 2026 is a non-Triennale year — the next is 2028 — so this is the quiet version.
💰 Every paid door totals about $68 (¥10,700) online — Chichu ¥2,500 weekday / ¥2,700 weekend, Benesse House Museum ¥1,300 including the Valley Gallery, Lee Ufan ¥1,200, Ando ¥600, the New Museum ¥1,500, Sugimoto ¥1,600, the five-house Art House ticket ¥1,200, Minamidera ¥600. Ferries: Uno ¥370, Takamatsu ¥680, high-speed ¥1,590. Bus ¥100, coins only. Children 15 and under free at every Benesse museum, so a family of four does the island for about $70. Departure tax rose to ¥3,000 on 1 July 2026.
🎯 Three traps. One: on a Monday the museums shut AND the free 24-seat shuttle stops running — and you may not cycle in, because the road between the gates is private and barred to all but Benesse House guests. Two: Chichu tickets go on sale the second Friday of the month for the month after next, 8 per slot, no on-site sales once sold out — and Benesse's own English page mistranslates this as "the following month". A ¥12,000 annual pass skips the reservation. Three: the Teshima/Inujima boat runs three sailings a day and was cancelled for wind on 21 September 2026; Teshima closes Tuesdays, Inujima Tuesday–Thursday and is guided-tour-only since 1 March 2026.
✅ Nothing here clears our bar of 4.5/5 with 150+ reviews — on either platform. Tripadvisor's 30 ranked entries top out at Chichu 4.3 (877) and only 7 carry 150+. Google Maps, with 3–8× the sample, gives Chichu 4.4 (4,728), Benesse House Museum 4.3 (2,670), Ando Museum 4.0 (925), Lee Ufan 3.9 (1,414). The inversion: Google rates the art houses individually, and Minamidera takes 4.4 from 745 — tying the dearest experience on the island at about $3.80.
🗺️ Also here: Yayoi Kusama died on 14 August 2026, aged 97, so both pumpkins are now memorials; Kinza closed 13 Oct 2026–1 Jan 2027, the New Museum 24 Nov–12 Dec, Chichu 12 Jan–19 Mar 2027; Mandarin Oriental slipped again to around spring 2028; Kagawa has no bed tax but tabled a ¥200 draft on 8 Sept 2026; residents pay ¥320 at the bathhouse against a visitor's ¥660; and the half nobody mentions — Mitsubishi Materials has smelted copper here since 1917, over 200,000 tonnes a year with about 500 staff, and its tour drew 145 people in 2025. Honest absences are named with who was checked: no food price, no card guidance, no bed count, no clinic price, no tap-water statement.
Five verdicts out of ten. The lowest goes to the luxury traveller — and the highest to the one person who stays the night.

Ile de Re: Toll Bridge, Second Homes & Who Should Skip It
2026/10/25
🌍 Île de Ré is France's second-home island — and that is not what makes it unusual. INSEE's 2023 census puts second homes at 61.2% of the island's 23,656 dwellings, six times the French rate of 9.7%, rising to 83.6% at Les Portes-en-Ré, where 1,656 second homes sit against 302 year-round households. But INSEE puts Île d'Oléron next door at 61.3% and Noirmoutier at 68.9%. On the measure Ré is criticised for, it is indistinguishable from its neighbour. What sets it apart is the toll.
💰 The Département de la Charente-Maritime publishes a return car toll of €16 in high season (15 June–15 September, plus the Ascension and Pentecost long weekends *including their eves*), €8 in shoulder and €4 from 15 November to 1 March. Pedestrians and cyclists cross free. Permanent residents are exonerated. And a second-home owner pays €2 — in every season, all year. By law one third of each toll maintains the bridge and two thirds is an environmental levy earmarked for natural spaces, clean public transport and everyday cycle paths.
🎯 Three traps. One: the high-season band quietly includes two ordinary May weekends in 2027. Two: of eight readable hotel and campsite websites, exactly one published a nightly rate — while the tourist office's own database publishes rates for properties that publish none, including a five-star at €99–€617 for the same double room. Three: of three bike-hire firms, two publish no prices and the third day rates only — €98 a week against a published €53 elsewhere.
✅ The evidence is thinner than the island's fame. Of 210 ranked Tripadvisor entries, only ten carry 150+ reviews and only THREE clear 4.5 with 150+: the free Port de Saint-Martin-de-Ré (4.5, 1,409), the €2.05 Clocher Observatoire (4.5, 891) and Conche des Baleines beach (4.6, 165). The famous Phare des Baleines rates 4.4 from 2,621 and fails. The free Abbaye des Châteliers (4.2, 414) beats the ticketed Fort la Prée (3.9, 144), built from its stones. The toll bridge itself rates 3.5 from 181. And the Citadelle Vauban, 159 reviews, is a working prison you cannot enter.
🗺️ Also here: a reinforced drought order to 31 October 2026; three months of roadworks on the RD735 spine road to 18 December with the line 150 bus stop moved; Fort la Prée closed 29 September–18 October; the Écomusée at Loix open 2h45 a day, closed Sundays and Mondays; 12 supervised beaches out of 23 bathing sites, July and August only; 138 km of cycle path; and two alternatives — Oléron, whose bridge is free, and Noirmoutier, whose road vanishes under the sea twice a day.
Five verdicts out of ten. The lowest goes to the family who drives over in August — and the highest to the traveller who crosses for nothing.

Gold Coast: Theme Parks, Surf Strip & What To Skip — Worth It?
2026/10/24
🌍 The Gold Coast is not what the brochure says. Experience Gold Coast's own 2025 figures: 14.4 million visitors, but 13.7 million domestic and only 682,000 international — under 5%. Top international markets are New Zealand 217,000, the UK 75,000, and China third at 72,000. This is a domestic coast with a New Zealand overlay. The tram reached Burleigh Heads for the first time on 9 August 2026; Stage 4 to the airport was formally cancelled on 1 September 2025, so there is still no tram from the plane to the beach.
💰 Public transport anywhere in Queensland is a flat A$0.50 a journey — about 35 US cents — on bus, train, tram and ferry, with Airtrain the one exclusion. But almost nothing else here publishes a price. More than twenty Gold Coast properties were opened and exactly one, Q1 Resort & Spa, publishes a nightly rate (from A$190). The council's own ten tourist parks publish the extra-person charge and not the site fee. The state fills the gap: Experience Gold Coast's December 2025 dashboard gives an average daily rate of A$363 at 71% occupancy.
🎯 Three traps. One: a Village Roadshow Saver Annual Pass is A$189 — fifty-nine dollars LESS than two flexible day tickets, and ten dollars less than the seven-day pass — but there is no child discount on annual passes and the child single-day price is not published on any of nine pages. Two: Queensland Ambulance charges non-residents A$1,508.64 for emergency transport, and the UK reciprocal health agreement explicitly excludes ambulance cover. Three: card surcharges end across Australia on 1 October 2026, but weekend surcharges, public holiday surcharges and booking fees are not covered — and Queensland's next public holiday is 5 October.
✅ The inversion. Not one of the five big paid theme parks clears 4.5 on Tripadvisor: Movie World 3.5 (6,287 reviews), Sea World 3.8, Wet'n'Wild 3.6, Dreamworld 4.0, Paradise Country 3.3. Eleven free beaches and parks do: Burleigh Heads Beach 4.8 (1,755), Coolangatta 4.7, Springbrook 4.7, Natural Bridge 4.6. The G:link tram rates 4.6 from 2,301 reviews and costs 50 cents. Every Gold Coast market fails the bar.
🗺️ Also here: eleven Wet'n'Wild attractions closed until 30 October 2026 and two Sea World rides closed with no reopening date; parts of Lamington and Tamborine still shut from Cyclone Alfred; swimming now prohibited at Natural Bridge; Schoolies Week 21–27 November; the Gold Coast 500 on 23–25 October; and two alternatives, the Sunshine Coast and Bali.
Five verdicts out of ten. The lowest goes to the people who spend the most — and the highest to the traveller who buys no ticket at all.

Melbourne: The Long-Haul Question & What's Worth Doing — Worth It?
2026/10/24
🌍 Melbourne Airport has just had its busiest year for international travel since it opened in 1970 — 12.26 million international passengers, with the UK the fastest-growing market at +9.4%. There is still no nonstop flight between Melbourne and the UK. The Metro Tunnel opened on 30 November 2025 with five new stations and three lines out of the City Loop, so pre-2026 train advice is now wrong.
💰 The number that decides this trip: public transport across the whole state of Victoria is half price from 1 June 2026 until 1 January 2027. A full day anywhere — Melbourne, Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong — is A$5.70, about US$4. What it reverts to is not published: Victoria indexes fares every January and no 2027 figure exists yet. Hotels won't tell you a price either — ten Melbourne properties were opened and not one publishes a nightly rate — but the state does: Visit Victoria's CoStar data puts July 2026 at A$196.80 average, January at A$262.30.
🎯 Three traps. One: SkyBus is A$25.90 one way and is the only Victorian fare excluded from the half-price scheme, while route 901 reaches the same airport inside the A$5.70 day cap — and Melbourne Airport publishes two different rideshare access fees on its own website on the same day, A$4.82 and A$4.48. Two: Victoria's 7.5% short stay levy is charged on the cleaning fee and the GST as well as the room, and does not apply to hotels at all — about A$116 on a week's apartment. Three: the Australian Open's peak Saturday ran A$380.74 against a January monthly average of A$261.74.
✅ What the ratings say. Six of the top ten cost nothing. Royal Botanic Gardens 4.7 from 11,119 Tripadvisor reviews, free. The City Circle tram 4.4 from 18,479 — the most-reviewed attraction in the city, and it is a free tram. Melbourne Museum 4.5, A$18, under-16s free. But Hosier Lane is 4.2, the aquarium 4.0, Luna Park 3.6 at A$57, and the Brighton Bathing Boxes have 123 reviews. Below about rank 60 the evidence runs out entirely.
🗺️ Also here: the St Kilda penguins are now free but booked, capped at 150 a session, with tickets released Tuesdays at 10am for the following week; the Melbourne Star has been shut since 2021 and still carries a live Tripadvisor listing; no airport train, and Victoria's Big Build publishes no date for one; a Victorian state election on 28 November 2026; a strengthening El Niño; and two alternatives, Sydney and Adelaide.
Five verdicts out of ten. The lowest goes to the traveller doing what almost everyone does — and the highest to the one who never boards another plane.

San Andres: Colombia's Cheap Caribbean Flight — Worth It?
2026/10/23
🌍 San Andres is Colombia's Caribbean island — four hundred and eighty miles from the mainland, a hundred and fifty from Nicaragua, and the one part of the country where national sales tax is not charged at all. Article 423 of Colombia's tax statute excludes it outright, and a tax-authority ruling of December 2024 extends that to services performed on the island, so hotel and restaurant bills carry no VAT. It took 1,127,806 visitors in 2025. And on the published evidence, remarkably little here has one price.
💰 What a week costs, per person, seven nights, two sharing, from published figures at the market rate of 3,329.61 pesos to the dollar: about $350 backpacking, about $720 mid-range, about $1,200 comfortable, about $2,970 at the top of what this island prints. Island taxis are excluded from all four, and trap three is why. The compulsory tourist card is 153,000 pesos, about $46, set by the governor's Decreto 0010 of 8 January 2026.
🎯 Three traps. One: the second charge. A Johnny Cay boat tour published at 110,000 pesos, with a 15,000-peso CORALINA levy collected separately on the sand — and the same trip sold at 150,000 by another operator. Two: the department's own citizen-services portal still publishes the tourist card at 104,492 pesos, a third under its own 2026 decree, with no date on the page. Three: official taxi tariffs were fixed by Decreto 0329 of July 2025, and the amounts appear nowhere anybody can read.
✅ What clears our bar of 4.5/5 on 150+ reviews: of about 29 rated attractions on Tripadvisor's island index, exactly one — Cayo Bolivar, 4.5 from 1,897, an hour out to sea with no dock. Half the index sits under 100 reviews. The two biggest listings after Johnny Cay are the island's worst-rated: Hoyo Soplador 3.1 from 5,730 and Cueva de Morgan 2.8 from 3,019 — and both are named stops on the standard island tour. Three restaurants clear the bar. Four hotels out of 788.
🗺️ Also in this one: why piped-water coverage is 36.7% and sewerage 16.6% on the census figures, and why the utility publishes a supply timetable sector by sector rather than an emergency notice; why the tap water still scores "no risk" on the national index; the Magic Garden landfill the regulator gave two to three months in 2019, still open seven years later, which caught fire on 3 September 2026; the 2025 tribunal order to close Cayo Acuario that no authority says was ever carried out; why yellow fever vaccination is not recommended for this department; and two alternatives, Providencia and Roatan, with the honest catch on each.
Five verdicts out of ten. The lowest goes to the traveller doing exactly what this island sells.

Bruges: Day-Trip Crowds & Why You May Need to Stay — Worth It?
2026/10/23
🌍 Bruges takes eight million visitors a year into a medieval core you can walk across in twenty minutes, in a city of about 120,000 people. Four in ten people in that centre are visitors, and fourteen per cent of them stay the night. Those fourteen per cent account for 53% of tourism turnover, out of €542 million. Bruges knows what an overnight guest is worth, and has written that arithmetic into its own law.
💰 What three days costs, per person, bed excluded, at the ECB rate of 1.1367 dollars to the euro: about $155 frugal, $265 mid-range, $330 comfortable, $415 at the top of what Bruges prints. The bed is excluded for a reason — no hotel here publishes a rate. We checked Hotel Navarra, Martin's Brugge, the Snuffel hostel and the tourism office. The lodging tax is €3.75 per person over 18 per night in 2026, rising to €5 in 2028.
🎯 Three traps. One: the €49 Musea Brugge Card needs four paid sites in 72 hours to beat singles — and the Groeninge and Gruuthuse museums swapped closing days on 1 April 2026, so Groeninge now shuts Mondays and Gruuthuse Wednesdays, the opposite of almost everything in print. Two: the coach ordinance — your coach may bring you to the hotel and collect you, and "excursions or intermediate journeys by coach from the hotel are not permitted". Three: street parking escalates €3, €4, €5, €6 to €18 for a four-hour maximum, while the ring park-and-rides are free and unlimited.
✅ What clears our bar of 4.5/5 on 150+ reviews: sixteen things out of 213 rated attractions — and seven of the sixteen serve beer or chocolate. Not one of the five museums the council owns and charges for reaches 4.5. The Memling collection at Saint John's Hospital rates 4.0. The highest-rated museum in Bruges is a free 40-minute harp recital by one man, at 4.9 from 2,789 reviews, ranked #1 of 58 museums. The canal boat — the most photographed thing in the city — misses the bar at 4.3.
🗺️ Also here: why the Groeninge Museum closes on 11 January 2027 for four years and its collection does not reopen at BRUSK until 12 March 2027; the Belfry's published throughput of 15 to 25 climbers every 20 minutes; why the railway publishes no fare for Brussels to Bruges at all; 0.7 hours of sunshine a day in January against 7.1 in July; why we have no crime figure for you; and two alternatives, Ghent and Delft.
Five verdicts out of ten. The lowest goes to the traveller you would least expect in a city like this one.

Gozo: Malta's Calm Alternative Under the Same Pressures — Worth It?
2026/10/22
🌍 Gozo has 39,287 residents and takes roughly 2.3 million foreign visitors a year — but Malta's National Statistics Office says 91.7% of them are same-day visitors. Only about 192,000 foreigners sleep here annually. The calm Gozo is sold on is real, and it is on a timer: it starts when the last boat leaves.
💰 The crossing is the story. Gozo Channel publishes an adult foot-passenger return at €4.65 (about $5.30) and a car-and-driver return at €15.70 (about $17.90) — and you don't pay on the way over. The operator's own procedures page states tickets are validated only at Mġarr, on the return. That €4.65 is why nine in ten visitors are day-trippers. Meanwhile the fast ferry's own website publishes no fare at all: we checked four operator pages and found the service named on every one and priced on none.
🎯 Three traps. One: the Blue Lagoon's 4,000-visitor cap is per time slot, not per day — three slots, so a 12,000 ceiling — and The Shift News found 8–12 commercial kiosks still on the beach in June 2026. Two: seven Gozitan bathing sites appear on this year's "poor" water-quality list, including Ramla Bay — and all three Gozo beaches named by Malta's own Blue Flag operator are on it, on a list whose only dated statement refers to the 2017 season. Three: Gozo's injury accidents rose 75% year-on-year in Q2 2026 while total crashes rose 4.5%.
✅ What clears our bar of 4.5/5 on 150+ reviews: Ta' Pinu (4.5, 1,029), Xlendi Beach and Caves (4.5, 1,180), Dwejra Bay (4.6, 699), Wied il-Għasri (4.6, 213), Tal-Mixta Cave (4.6, 113), the Citadel Visitors' Centre (4.5, 222). What doesn't: the UNESCO-listed Ġgantija Temples at 4.1 from 1,857, Ramla Bay at 4.1 from 1,597, Ta' Kola Windmill at 3.8. And the island's best-reviewed attraction — 4.5 from 3,450, nearly double the temples — is the Azure Window, which collapsed into the sea in March 2017.
🗺️ Also here: 45% of Gozo's dwellings are secondary, seasonal or vacant against 27.5% nationally; occupancy swinging 64.6% in summer to 26.9% in Q1; a 13-storey Xlendi tower approved 9–1 three months after the Prime Minister called it "too harsh"; the €1.50-a-night environmental contribution from 1 July 2026; Heritage Malta's €13 Discover Gozo ticket; Calypso Cave shut since 2019; the 1987-built car ferry chartered at €10,600 a day; and two alternatives, Favignana and Vis.

Rhodes: Old Town Crowds, The Resort Belt & Shoulder Season — Worth It?
2026/10/22
🌍 Rhodes has 125,113 residents and took 7,093,264 airport passenger movements last year — about 57 per resident — plus 547,549 cruise passengers on 418 calls. Eurostat makes the South Aegean the most tourism-intensive region in the EU. And the highest-rated thing on the island is free to walk into.
💰 Not one of the five sights people fly here for clears 4.5 on Tripadvisor: the village of Lindos 4.4 (12,000+ reviews), the Acropolis of Lindos 4.4 (10,000+), the Palace of the Grand Master 4.4 (6,778), Ancient Kamiros 4.4 (1,184), Anthony Quinn Bay 4.3 (7,172). The walled Medieval City scores 4.6 from 5,861 and the Street of the Knights 4.6 from 1,180 — both free. The four marquee state sites cost €60 a head (about $68), and there is no combined ticket you can quote: the state ticketing service publishes none, and the ministry's older database prices the identical four-site package at €20 on one page and €10 on another.
🎯 Three traps. One: there is no fixed airport taxi fare at Rhodes — the September 2026 national tariff fixes airport fares for Athens, Thessaloniki and Kavala only — and no Rhodes taxi association publishes a tariff to check the meter against. Two: Greece regulates beach space, not sunbed price; half of every beach and the four metres nearest the water are legally free. Three: the "shoulder season" is two months, not five — Fraport's own figures show international flights falling 90% between October and November.
✅ Live and unresolved as we publish: the General Hospital of Rhodes logged 1,384 gastroenteritis attendances in the 40 days to 21 September 2026 — 851 in August against 201 a year earlier. Norovirus was found in samples; no cause has been established; no death and no hospital admission has been reported. The town water tested clean on 7 and 16 September, and no body has documented any link to the Vodi wastewater plant.
🗺️ Also here: Pervola, five acres of the Medieval City shut for 75 years, reopened in 2026 and free; the Walk on the Walls open Mon–Fri 12:00–15:00 only; the Valley of the Butterflies at 3.7 from 2,951 reviews, its moths gone weeks early and its ticket cut to €3; Kahal Shalom, the oldest synagogue in Greece (1577), at 4.7; one hotel on an island of 104,185 beds publishing a nightly rate; and two alternatives, Corfu and Chania.
Five verdicts out of ten. The lowest goes to the family in the school summer holidays — and the highest to the same trip six weeks later.

Mount Kilimanjaro: Porters, Operator Cuts & Who Should Skip It
2026/10/21
🌍 Mount Kilimanjaro took 63,003 international visitors last year on Tanzania's own ministry figures — 8,896 in August against 648 in April, a 13.7× swing the brochures never mention. It is the only mountain of its height you can walk up without a rope, and a place where everything is priced to the cent and almost nothing is measured.
💰 The government's share is fixed and public: $70/day conservation, $50/night camping, $60/night huts, $20 rescue, all VAT-exclusive at 18% — about $956 per person on a 7-day camping climb, $720 on a 5-day Marangu. The same 7-day Machame sells at $2,795 from one operator and $8,800 from another: 3.1× the money over an identical floor. The catch — TANAPA's only published tariff expired on 30 June 2024 and has never been replaced.
🎯 Three traps. One: the summit success table. "Marangu 27%, Lemosho 85%" is a single 2006 park dataset, never updated, published by **days** and relabelled by **route** — and the biggest operator quoting it says "the park's criteria for 'success' is not clear." Two: your insurance altitude band — most policies stop at 4,000m or 4,600m, Uhuru is 5,895m, and no insurer publishes a premium. Three: the tip. The ethics body cited everywhere for the "$20/$12/$12/$6" table publishes no tip figures at all; the only dollar amount on its whole site is a $3 contribution.
✅ What clears our bar of 4.5/5 on 150+ reviews: the mountain itself at 4.9 from 2,934 — and then almost nothing on it. Kilimanjaro National Park's whole Tripadvisor geography holds two attractions. Of 1,018 listed park tours, not one in the top ten clears 150 reviews. Moshi returns "no attractions match your filters" for town-centre sights, and Marangu village's best-reviewed thing has 55. The best-evidenced paid activity in the region is a waterfall, coffee and hot-springs day tour at 5.0 from 776 — off the mountain entirely.
🗺️ Also here: Tanzania's new minimum wage setting a porter's legal daily floor at TZS 8,654, about $3.25; the $20 rescue fee whose entire published text says nothing about what it buys; a helicopter that tops out near 4,900m and will not fly at night, while the summit push leaves at midnight and the condition behind 76% of autopsied deaths starts at 4,600m; the KiliMedAir crash of 24 December 2025; the Western Breach closure; the cable car UNESCO is being asked to approve; and two alternatives, Mount Meru and Mount Kenya.

Koh Samet: Bangkok's Closest Beach & What To Skip — Worth It?
2026/10/21
🌍 Koh Samet is sold as the closest real beach island to Bangkok, and it charges you at the pier for the privilege. That claim does not survive checking. Koh Larn is nearer — 152 km out, about ฿184 to reach against Koh Samet's ฿435 or more, six to eight beaches, 1,567 hotel rooms and no fee at all to land. Koh Si Chang is nearer still but has one usable beach. What Koh Samet actually is: Thailand's third most-visited national park at 1.04 million visitors in 2025, and an island where the answer changes completely depending on which review platform you read.
💰 What a week costs, per person, seven nights, two sharing, from published figures: about $220 backpacking midweek, about $640 mid-range, about $955 comfortable, about $1,950 at the top of what this island prints. Island taxis are excluded from all four and the reason is trap three. The national park fee is ฿200 for a foreign adult against ฿40 for a Thai — published in the Department of National Parks' own schedule, and machine-enforced with facial recognition since October 2025.
🎯 Three traps. One: the $140.25 day-tour listing that never mentions the ฿200 you will be charged at the pier. Two: a fully itemised ฿1,994 Thai trip becomes ฿2,254 with a foreign passport, because four of the six islands on its snorkel tour carry a further ฿100 top-up. Three: nine taxi stands display fixed government fare boards, and not one of those fares is published anywhere on the internet — photograph the board when you land.
✅ What clears our bar of 4.5/5 on 150+ reviews: on Tripadvisor, nothing at all — not one of 34 attractions, not one of 45 restaurants. On Google, a dozen things. Breeze at Ao Prao is 4.9 from 1,061 on Google and 4.2 from nine on Tripadvisor. Ao Wai, the island's best-rated beach at 4.6 from 784, does not appear on Tripadvisor's island index at all. Sai Kaew, the beach in every photograph, fails on both.
🗺️ Also in this one: why September is the wettest month and not July, from the WMO station data — and why there is no weather station on the island at all; why the official tourism page calls March both peak and low season; why Koh Chang is in the same national park at the same rate and charges nothing to land; why a reported 2022 fee rise to ฿300 never happened; why there is no documented jet-ski scam in Rayong despite what you have been told; and two alternatives, Koh Larn and Koh Mak, with the honest catch on each.

Samana & Las Terrenas: Whale Season & What's Worth Doing — Worth It?
2026/10/20
🌍 Two cruise terminals are being built on one small Dominican bay at the same time. Samana Bayport opened its first phase in April 2026 with a published build-out target of three million passengers a year; Port Samana at Arroyo Barril opens on 24 November 2026 targeting a million by 2030. And on the published review evidence, the day visit is the single worst thing this peninsula sells. The plan's premise — that better roads pulled Samana into short-break range — does not hold: the motorway opened in 2008 and the coastal boulevard in 2011.
💰 Prices at the Banco Central's published rate for 22 Sep 2026 (59.4618 pesos = $1). Hotel Atlantis at Playa Bonita publishes $190 / $165 / $145 a night by season with 18% tax, 10% service and breakfast already inside it. Villa Serena in Las Galeras publishes $180–$270 with the 18% NOT included — so the cheaper-sounding room is the dearer one. A published three-course bill: 2,000 pesos of food becomes 2,560 with tax and service, about $43. Whale trips $65 or $45 an adult. Airport transfer about $105 each way. Four properties at the top of the market publish no price at all.
🎯 The traps: the relaxed passport-validity concession on the Ministry of Tourism's own entry page expires 31 December 2026, two weeks before whale season opens, and nothing published says what replaces it. The packaged waterfall day trip from Punta Cana scores 3.3 from 81 reviews, with its own reviewers describing 14 hours against a stated 9 — the same waterfall on horseback booked locally is $24 including guide and park entry. And neither national park publishes an entrance fee anywhere: no tariff exists on the ministry's site or in the gazette.
✅ Our bar is 4.5/5 and 150+ reviews. Eight beaches pass — Playa Rincon 4.5 from 1,360, Playa Bonita 4.6 from 1,197, Playa El Portillo 4.7 from 905 and five more. Six Las Terrenas restaurants pass. Whale Samana With Kim holds 4.8 from 405. But every named attraction fails: El Limon 4.0 from 1,814, Cayo Levantado 4.0 from 175, Los Haitises 4.4 from 1,023. Past the top fifteen entries the ratings are single-reviewer noise.
🗺️ Also here: the whale season sits in a hotel's middle price band, not its high one — Christmas and Easter cost more than the whales. Las Terrenas lost power in July 2026 on the utility's own admission that the line cannot carry the town, and it has warned about that since 2015. Sanchez went over a month with no drinking water. Alternatives: Rincon in Puerto Rico for winter humpbacks with no paperwork, and Dominica for resident sperm whales year-round. Verdicts run 9 for the whale traveller down to 3 for the cruise passenger — the lowest score, to the visitor both new terminals are being built for.

Hamburg: Cruise Crowds, Concert Hall & What To Skip — Worth It?
2026/10/20
🌍 On 5 October 2026 the Elbphilharmonie Plaza stopped being free. Hamburg's culture authority published the decision in June: €5 to stand on the terrace that has cost nothing since 2017, because the city could no longer fund free access at €3.6m a year from its tourist tax. The operating company's own estimate is 550,000–660,000 fewer visitors a year, a fall of 25–30%, Meanwhile Hamburg is the only one of Germany's big three still growing — 16.5m overnight stays in 2025, up 2.1%, against Berlin down 3.8% and Munich down 0.2% — but US overnight stays fell 7.3% and UK 5.5%.
💰 Prices at the ECB's published reference rate for 22 Sep 2026 (€1 = $1.1463). Transport single €4.10, day ticket €8.20, Deutschlandticket €63 — and the harbour ferries run on an ordinary ticket, so line 62 is a €8.20 harbour cruise against €26.50 for one hour on a launch. Miniatur Wunderland €22 adult, €13 child. A published brewery lunch with a half-litre: €38.70, tax and service inside it by law. No Hamburg hotel, trade body, statistics office or the city itself publishes a room rate — Hamburg has the highest RevPAR in Germany at €96.90 and will not tell you what a night costs.
🎯 The traps: Hamburg publishes a fixed taxi price and it loses to its own meter at every distance — €38 against €34.80 at twelve kilometres and against €18 at five. The Hamburg CARD starts €4.70 behind a plain day ticket and names no partner on its price page. And the tourist tax is per person, keyed to the date you booked rather than the date you stay, with no business-travel exemption since 2023. There is no direct flight to Hamburg from anywhere in the Americas — the airport's own charges document uses HAM–JFK as its example of a route it wants and does not have.
✅ Our bar is 4.5/5 and 150+ reviews. Miniatur Wunderland is the best-evidenced attraction in the city at 4.8 from 24,468 reviews. The Port of Hamburg, Speicherstadt, St Michaelis, the Rathaus, Planten un Blomen, Tierpark Hagenbeck, the Maritime Museum and the Elbphilharmonie all pass. The Kunsthalle fails at 4.3, HafenCity at 4.4, the Fischmarkt at 4.2, the Alter Elbtunnel at 4.4 — and the Reeperbahn, in its 400th year, at 3.5 from 2,413. Past rank 60 the evidence thins; past rank 250 it is single-reviewer noise.
🗺️ Also here: German weather service normals give Munich 22% more rain than Hamburg, but Hamburg 225 fewer hours of sun a year and 36 hours in the whole of December. Everything shuts on Sundays by law. Pickpocketing in St Pauli ran to 2,377 cases in 2025 with a 4.7% clearance rate. Alternatives: Rotterdam and Copenhagen. Verdicts run 8 for the family down to 4 for the nightlife traveller — the lowest score, to the thing Hamburg is most famous for.

Udaipur: Palace Hotels & Who Should Skip It
2026/10/19
🌍 Udaipur is the lake city — the white palace on the water you have seen a hundred times without knowing its name. This episode does something specific with it. We found the one document that tells you exactly what that view costs, published in rupees by the family who own the palace, and then we found out what is actually in the lake this month.
On 20 September 2026 the Public Health Engineering department put Udaipur city on drinking water once every 72 hours, with Lake Pichola at 7.2 feet against an 11-foot capacity. And you cannot look it up. No authority in India publishes the level — not the state water department, not the Central Water Commission, not the city. It reached the public because a local reporter rang the department.
💰 What it actually costs, from the only published rate card in the city. Four levels, per person per night sharing, room plus 18% tax: about $68, about $80, about $125, and about $245 for a lake-facing suite at Shiv Niwas Palace. The lake view itself has a published price — the same suites are listed twice on the tariff, and the gap runs 14% to 26% in winter. Four of the five palace hotels publish no room rate at all.
🎯 Three traps. One: two arms of the same government price Kumbhalgarh fort on the same evening and disagree about foreigners by a factor of 7.5 — the Archaeological Survey charges 15 times the Indian rate, the state tourism corporation charges 2. Follow that thread and five separate bodies price this city's sights on five different ratios, while the City Palace charges everyone the same and says so in writing. Two: India's hotel GST steps at ₹7,500 a night, so one rupee more on the rate card costs you ₹976 more at the desk — a 12.4% jump. Three: the famous folk-dance show has moved out of the building it is named after, there are now two shows, and the times and prices published for them do not agree.
✅ What clears our bar of 4.5/5 on 150+ reviews: Ranakpur (4.7 from 3,395), Kumbhalgarh Fort (4.5 from 2,017) and Eklingji (4.5 from 1,356). Not one of them is in Udaipur. Of the eight most prominent sights in the city itself, exactly one clears the bar — and it is a working Shiva temple 22 km out where you cannot take your phone, your bag, your shoes or your socks inside. Everything on the postcard sits between 3.8 and 4.4.
🗺️ Also in this one: why there is no flight to Udaipur from anywhere outside India; why the airport is 20, 22 or 25 km from town depending who publishes it; why no authority publishes an auto-rickshaw fare and what we found when we searched again in Hindi; why the service charge on your bill is optional by law and the High Court has said so; and two alternatives, Jaipur and Jodhpur, with the honest reason not to pick each.
Five verdicts out of ten. The lowest goes to the traveller this city was built for.

Samarkand: Fast Rail, Tourist Quarter & What To Skip — Worth It?
2026/10/19
🌍 Uzbekistan had a record 11.7 million visitors in 2025 and Samarkand hosted UNESCO's General Conference in a $580m purpose-built complex — so we tested the plan's promise that fast rail and a new tourist quarter make the city easy to do. The answer: the newest, shiniest thing in Samarkand is the one you can't get a seat on, and it decides the whole trip.
💰 Prices at the Central Bank's rate for the day ($1 = 11,810 som): Registan about $8.50 (100,000 som — the one figure every source agrees on), Shah-i-Zinda about $4, B&B Bahodir about $22 a night, the Bibikhanum Hotel from about $64, the Hilton at the Silk Road resort from about $178. The per-night tourist fee works out at about $5.50 at a larger hotel. We could not find one published price for the new "Eternal City" attraction — eleven sources checked — so we say so rather than guess.
🎯 The traps: the Afrosiyob high-speed train is a named trap. Checking Uzbekistan Railways' own booking system, every fast Tashkent–Samarkand train for mid-to-late October came back with ZERO seats, while the slow Sharq trains had 500–900 free — because the seats aren't sold out, they aren't on sale yet (the window is 60 days, not the 45 some sites claim). Second trap: no official Registan ticket price exists and the museum's own tariff, its Russian page and its ticket shop give three different numbers. Third: codeine and tramadol are controlled — declare all medication on arrival.
✅ The second-platform check, four destinations running: across Samarkand's sites Google rates 0.3–0.9 higher than Tripadvisor on the second tier and never the reverse, and Yandex pins the top four all at a flat 5.0. Do the Registan, Shah-i-Zinda (early), Gur-e-Amir. Skip the Ulugh Beg Observatory ("only the ground floor remains"), Afrasiab and the Hovrenko wine tasting.
🗺️ Also here: US citizens only became visa-free on 1 Jan 2026 — trust travel.state.gov, not the Uzbek embassy site, which was still out of date. The redevelopment that made the city camera-ready cleared a neighbourhood near the al-Maturidi shrine in May 2025 — UN rapporteurs said 1,200+ lost their homes, stated on the opening day of UNESCO's conference. Alternatives: Bukhara (90 min by fast train, seats actually available) and Turkestan, Kazakhstan. Verdicts from 9 for the planner to 4 for the spontaneous traveller.
