Description

Beyond Small Talk is a space for honest conversations about what men often carry but rarely say out loud. Hosted by Sean, the podcast explores pressure, relationships, purpose, faith, emotional honesty, and what it means to live through life instead of escaping it. Through personal stories, conversations with guests, and reflections on books, psychology, recovery, and real life, each episode aims to go beyond surface level and explore the challenges, questions, and tensions that shape who we become. Not a place for perfect answers, just a place for honest conversations.

Episode 5. When Does Perseverance Become Ego?
2026/10/03
In this episode, Sean sits down with his friend Chandler Rogers, entrepreneur and co-founder of Relay, for an honest conversation about ambition, fatherhood, financial pressure, and the responsibility of providing for a family. They explore the difficult line between perseverance and ego, whether having a Plan B means giving up, and whether marriage and fatherhood change what success means. When does refusing to quit show courage—and when does it become ego? 🎥 Watch Beyond Small Talk on YouTube:  www.youtube.com/@LetsGoBeyondSmallTalk Subscribe on Youtube for full conversations and clips from Beyond Small Talk: What Men Don’t Say. Episode 4. The Three Hardest Things for Men to Say
2026/08/12
What happens when understanding why we are the way we are still isn’t enough to help us change? In this episode of Beyond Small Talk, Sean sits down with Matt Wenger to wrestle with some of the conversations many men struggle to have out loud. Matt begins with three statements he believes are particularly difficult for men to say: “I’m scared. I’m lonely. I need help.” From there, the conversation moves through childhood, masculinity, isolation, recovery, resentment, nervous-system responses, and the difficult gap between understanding ourselves and actually living differently. We explore why insight alone may not create change, why stress can send us back to our “factory settings,” and why curiosity, compassion, honesty, and real relationships can matter as much as understanding our past. Matt also offers a powerful reminder that healing is rarely a straight line—and that returning to an old pattern does not have to mean returning to square one. Perhaps the question underneath the entire conversation is simple: How do I become more capable of observing myself before I automatically react? And when that awareness finally arrives, what do I choose to do with it? Episode 3. Is It Okay to Be Me, But Not Stay Exactly as I Am?
2026/07/28
How much should our past explain who we are today? In this episode of Beyond Small Talk, Sean explores the tension between understanding our story and taking responsibility for what comes next. Drawing loosely from the contrasting ideas of Freud and Adler, we consider an imaginary line: on one side, understanding where our patterns, emotions, and behaviors came from; on the other, deciding what we're going to do with them today. But knowing where we should be on that line isn't always enough. When stress hits, our stories are fast. Wisdom is slow. We can find ourselves right back in old patterns, old explanations, and old reactions. So how do we create enough space for wisdom to catch up? This episode explores resentment, relationships, recovery, work, emotional patterns, and the small moments when we can pause long enough to ask: What do I need today—understanding, action, or a little of both? Because understanding our past can give us compassion. Taking responsibility for our future can give us hope. And perhaps wisdom is knowing which one we need more today. ☕ Grab a coffee. Episode 2. I Thought I'd Be Further Along in Life By Now
2026/06/16
Why do so many of us feel frustrated even when life is objectively good? In this episode, I explore the quiet resentment that can grow when reality doesn't match the timeline we imagined for ourselves. We talk about unmet expectations, gratitude as a practice, and why many men struggle to find someone they can truly go Beyond Small Talk with. This isn't a conversation about having all the answers. It's a conversation about naming what we're carrying before it quietly starts shaping who we become.  Send us Fan Mail Watch & follow Beyond Small Talk on YouTube: Beyond Small Talk – What Men Don't Say Email us: [email protected]
Episode 1. Life Is Moving - Why Doesn't It Feel Right?
2026/06/06
Life doesn't stop while we're avoiding difficult conversations. In this first episode of Beyond Small Talk, Sean explores the tendency many men have to stay busy, stay functional, and stay composed while avoiding what's happening underneath the surface. Why do so many of us struggle to talk honestly about stress, pressure, loneliness, resentment, and purpose? And what happens when we don't?  Send us Fan Mail Watch & follow Beyond Small Talk on YouTube: Beyond Small Talk – What Men Don't Say Email us: [email protected]
