Description

Arsenal Women: Trailblazers is an independent podcast and community for people who want to understand Arsenal Women a little more deeply - on and off the pitch. I’m Roberto Revilla, a match-going Arsenal supporter, and this is where we make sense of what’s happening around the team together. That might mean looking beyond the scoreline to understand what Renée Slegers is trying to build, getting properly acquainted with a new signing rather than stopping at their statistics, making sense of a transfer, talking through the stories affecting the women’s game, or noticing the little things happening around Arsenal that can easily get lost in the noise. There’ll still be news, transfers, matches, injuries and all the things you’d expect from an Arsenal Women podcast, but Trailblazers isn’t about racing to tell you something you’ve probably already seen on your phone. I’d rather spend some time with it, ask the questions you might be asking yourself and hopefully leave you feeling as though you understand a little more than you did when we started. And this isn’t supposed to be me talking at you. The Trailblazers community is becoming an important part of the show, with your questions, observations and ideas regularly finding their way into episodes. Whether you’ve followed Arsenal Women for years or you’re only just discovering the team, you’re very welcome here. Trailblazers is family-friendly, independently produced and entirely dedicated to Arsenal Women. You can join the conversation on Instagram @arsenalwomentrailblazers, or read the essays and match analysis at arsenalwomentrailblazers.com. You can also email the show at [email protected]. Follow or subscribe in your podcast app, and if you enjoy spending time with us, please leave a rating or review and share Trailblazers with another Arsenal supporter. Every follow, listen and recommendation helps an entirely independent show continue to grow. Come on you Gunners. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Tottenham vs Arsenal Women: How We Win the North London Derby
2026/10/23
Tottenham have conceded twelve goals in their last two WSL games. Arsenal Women have spent weeks struggling for consistency. So what happens when two teams desperate for a result meet in the north London derby? In this episode of Trailblazers, I look ahead to Tottenham vs Arsenal Women and examine what Renée Slegers needs to change to get Arsenal back to winning ways. We look at Tottenham's attacking strengths and defensive weaknesses, the threat posed by former Arsenal player Victoria Pelova and why Arsenal need to rediscover the aggressive, coordinated pressing we saw during pre-season. I also reveal my preferred Arsenal starting XI, including Emily Fox, Taylor Hinds, Kim Little, Georgia Stanway in a more advanced role, Géraldine Reuteler at number 10 and Alessia Russo leading the line. Can Arsenal exploit Tottenham's defensive problems? Will Renée finally make the changes we've been calling for? And can we finish a weekend talking about a convincing Arsenal performance rather than another frustrating result? Plus, my north London derby score prediction. Trailblazers: The Arsenal Women Podcast goes beyond the headlines to explore the players, tactics and decisions shaping Arsenal Women. Arsenal 1–1 Birmingham: What’s Going Wrong Under Renée Slegers?
2026/10/18
Arsenal Women dropped more points at the Emirates after a frustrating 1–1 draw with Birmingham City, leaving supporters asking some increasingly difficult questions about Renée Slegers and the direction of the team. In this episode of Trailblazers, Roberto Revilla takes an in-depth look at what went wrong, why the same problems keep appearing and whether Arsenal are making the best use of their talented squad. I examine Alessia Russo’s outstanding individual performance and why playing her behind Stina Blackstenius might be limiting Arsenal’s attacking threat. I ask why Géraldine Reuteler is still waiting for a proper opportunity to start, question the timing of Renée’s substitutions and discuss the defensive problems developing around Ona Batlle at left-back. There’s also praise for Olivia Smith’s brilliant equaliser, Emily Fox’s impact from the bench and Birmingham’s outstanding Océane Hurtré, alongside a closer look at Georgia Stanway, Kim Little and the changes that could help Arsenal regain control of games. Finally, Roberto tackles the difficult question facing Arsenal supporters: how do we balance our respect for everything Renée Slegers has achieved with growing concerns about the decisions she’s making now? An honest, thoughtful conversation about Arsenal Women, without the shouting, the scapegoating or pretending everything will be fine. Instant Reaction: Arsenal 1-1 Birmingham City
2026/10/17
Hi from the Emirates Stadium and I give my instant reaction following both the first half and full time whistle at the Arsenal v Birmingham City match which ended 1-1. As I predicted in the preview, Oceane Hurtre did have an impact and scored, we had to fight back from 1-0 down and managed to salvage a point thanks to a moment of magic from Olivia Smith. I'll be back soon with the full match report and analysis. Arsenal Women: Trailblazers is a regular fan podcast dedicated to Arsenal Women. Arsenal Women v Birmingham: Injuries, Reuteler's Chance & My Predicted XI
2026/10/16
Arsenal Women are back at the Emirates this Saturday, and after a brilliant international break for several of our players, I'm hoping they've remembered to bring their scoring boots home! But there's some worrying injury news to discuss before Birmingham City arrive. Mariona Caldentey faces eight to ten weeks out with a hamstring injury, while Selina Cerci has undergone knee surgery. Two significant setbacks for Renée Slegers, but could this finally be Géraldine Reuteler's opportunity to establish herself in the Arsenal starting eleven? In this episode, I'm looking at what those injuries mean for the squad, who moves up the pecking order and why I'd love to see the Smilla Holmberg and Lisa Baum partnership reunited on Arsenal's right. We also preview Birmingham City, including the threat posed by Océane Hurtré, who's already scored five league goals this season. I'll share my preferred Arsenal starting eleven, explain why I'd make some changes following the international break and give you my score prediction. And congratulations to Trailblazer Aris from Kentish Town, who's joining me in Club Level on Saturday after winning my spare ticket! My prediction? Arsenal 4–1 Birmingham. Perhaps all those international goals have gone to my head, but I'm feeling optimistic! Arsenal Women: Trailblazers is a regular fan podcast dedicated to Arsenal Women. Arsenal Women Can't Stop Scoring! | More Good News
2026/10/14
We only had a good news episode on Monday, but apparently the Arsenal Women players decided we needed another one! It's been a remarkable few days for our Gunners on international duty, with Alessia Russo, Georgia Stanway, Stina Blackstenius, Smilla Holmberg, Caitlin Foord and Olivia Smith all finding the net for their countries. Alessia scored twice for England, Stina bagged another brace for Sweden and Smilla celebrated turning twenty with a goal and an assist. Seven Arsenal goals on Tuesday alone, plus Olivia's contribution for Canada on Monday. Not bad! After a difficult few weeks at club level, Roberto takes a few minutes to celebrate the players, enjoy their international success and look ahead to their return to Arsenal. Sometimes it's nice to have absolutely nothing to complain about. Trailblazers: The Arsenal Women Podcast follows Arsenal Women, tells the stories of the players behind the shirts and explores the why of it all. Arsenal Women International Round-Up: Russo, Baum & Blackstenius Shine
2026/10/12
It's been a good few days for Arsenal Women on international duty, and Roberto Revilla is back with a shorter, more cheerful edition of Trailblazers. Alessia Russo has been named England Women's Player of the Year and celebrated with a goal against Greece. Georgia Stanway was on the scoresheet too, while 19-year-old Lisa Baum made her senior Germany debut against Australia. There's more good news from Sweden, where Stina Blackstenius scored in a 5-0 victory over Lithuania and Smilla Holmberg returned to action following her recent foot injury, just in time to celebrate her 20th birthday. We also catch up with Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley's international appearances, the Netherlands' emphatic victory over Hungary and the latest ahead of Arsenal's return to Women's Super League action. No lengthy tactical analysis today. Just a chance to celebrate our players, enjoy some good news and look forward to what's coming next. Arsenal Women: Reasons to Smile, Reasons to Hope & The Latest Squad News
2026/10/10
It's been a difficult start to the season for Arsenal Women, but there's still plenty to celebrate, and sometimes it's worth reminding ourselves of that. In today's Trailblazers, we're catching up on everything happening around Arsenal during the international break, from worrying injury news to some fantastic achievements by players who deserve their moment in the spotlight. Selina Cerci has withdrawn from Germany's squad with a knee problem, Smilla Holmberg has suffered a foot injury and Mariona Caldentey is also facing a spell on the sidelines. But could Cerci's injury explain some of the selection decisions we've been questioning recently? Roberto shares something he noticed in Arsenal's training footage before the Manchester City game that might change how we look at the situation. There's also some much happier news. Kyra Cooney-Cross has been voted Arsenal Women's September Player of the Month, Michelle Agyemang has received her MBE from Prince William and Lisa Baum has earned her first senior Germany call-up. Meanwhile, Arsenal's Academy have given us something to celebrate with a 3-1 North London derby victory over Tottenham, featuring two goals from Mia Dixon and another from Cairo-Evea Antoine. We also look ahead to Arsenal's upcoming fixtures and what Renée Slegers needs to work on during the international break. And finally, Roberto has a message for supporters who are finding the constant negativity surrounding Arsenal Women difficult to deal with. Sometimes taking a break from football social media is the best thing we can do for ourselves. Because supporting Arsenal should still bring us joy, even when the football doesn't always cooperate. Manchester City 4-2 Arsenal: What Happened to the Arsenal We Saw in Pre-Season?
2026/10/07
Arsenal led Manchester City twice. They still came away with nothing. But this doesn’t feel like another episode where we simply list everything Arsenal did wrong. Because for periods at the Etihad, I liked what I saw. Arsenal pressed aggressively, caused City problems and showed flashes of the team we were watching in pre-season. Then City changed the game from their bench and Arsenal couldn’t change it back. So what happened? In this episode of Trailblazers, I look at Renée Slegers’ substitutions, Arsenal’s recurring problems managing leads, why Géraldine Reuteler and Selina Cerci remain so difficult to understand from a squad-planning perspective and why I’m not convinced by the argument that seven summer signings mean we should simply write this season off as a rebuild. We also need to talk about Renée herself. Has she lost the dressing room? Should Arsenal be considering a change? Or is the bigger problem that she appears to have stopped trusting some of the ideas she was developing with this squad only a few weeks ago? Five points from five WSL games is nowhere near good enough. But after watching this game back, I’m frustrated rather than hopeless. The international break has come at exactly the right time. Manchester City vs Arsenal: What Would an Arsenal Response Look Like?
2026/10/02
After the frustration of Paris, Renée Slegers is back in front of the media and, this time, she’s given us plenty to talk about before Arsenal Women travel to Manchester City on Sunday. Renée explains why she chose to stay with her players rather than face the media after Wednesday’s 2-2 draw, describes the strongest leadership she’s seen during her time in football and insists this Arsenal group has come together rather than fractured during a difficult run. But now we need to see what that looks like on the pitch. Manchester City might be flying in the WSL, but Real Madrid caused them serious problems in Europe on Thursday night, taking the lead, creating opportunities and coming extremely close to winning it late on. So what can Arsenal learn from Madrid, and where can they hurt City? I look at the team Renée might select, Chloe Kelly’s absence, the latest on Steph Catley, the goalkeeper question and whether this is finally the moment to make greater use of Selina Cerci and Géraldine Reuteler. And after weeks of talking about what isn’t working, I set out what I’ll be watching for at the Etihad that might tell us Arsenal are beginning to find their way again. Plus, my prediction for Manchester City vs Arsenal Women. Arsenal Women: Trailblazers is a regular fan podcast dedicated to Arsenal Women. Paris FC 2-2 Arsenal: How Did Arsenal Let This One Get Away?
2026/10/01
For about an hour in Paris, it looked like we were finally going to have a different conversation about Arsenal Women. Alessia Russo scored her first goal of the season, Georgia Stanway scored her first Arsenal goal and, at 2-0 up, Arsenal appeared to be finding some of the attacking answers we’ve spent the last few weeks looking for. Then it unravelled. In this episode, I work through how Arsenal allowed Paris FC back into a game they should have won, what happened to the defensive rotations we saw working so well in pre-season and why I’m becoming increasingly confused by some of Renée Slegers’ squad decisions. We also need to talk about Selina Cerci and Géraldine Reuteler. I also address one important question around Géraldine: she is fit, ready to play and there are no injury concerns preventing Arsenal from using her. So why are we barely seeing her? Then there’s that extraordinary late penalty. I’ve checked the law, we’ll work through what the referee appears to have seen and why, despite how bizarre the incident was, I don’t think Arsenal can use it to explain away the result. And with Manchester City coming on Sunday, we finish by separating what we know about Arsenal’s current problems from some of the much bigger claims being made online, particularly for those younger supporters who might be feeling pretty worried about their team right now. Chelsea 1-0 Arsenal: Is Arsenal’s Problem Now Bigger Than Finishing?
2026/09/28
Arsenal lost 1-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, but after watching the game again, Roberto thinks the conversation needs to go beyond another afternoon of missed chances. For the opening half an hour Arsenal were good. They controlled the game, caused Chelsea problems and hit the woodwork twice. But once again, when the opportunity came to shoot or make the decisive pass, that extra touch kept appearing. And then came the substitutions. Why did Renée Slegers turn first to Caitlin Foord and Stina Blackstenius when Selina Cerci, Géraldine Reuteler and Smilla Holmberg offer something different? Why did Arsenal appear more disjointed after the changes? And what should we make of Kim Little reportedly asking the bench, “Am I the six now?” With Arsenal taking just five points from their opening four WSL games and scoring only twice, Roberto asks whether this is still simply a finishing problem, or whether questions now need to be asked about the tactics, decision-making and clarity coming from the coaching staff. This is not a call for Renée to go, nor is there evidence she has lost the dressing room. But for the first time since Slegers took charge, there are some serious questions that Arsenal need to start answering. Get involved in the conversation over on Instagram @arsenalwomentrailblazers or in the comments on the written article that accompanies this episode at https://www.arsenalwomentrailblazers.com/chelsea-1-0-arsenal-is-arsenals-problem-now-bigger-than-finishing Arsenal Women: Trailblazers is a regular fan podcast dedicated to Arsenal Women. Chelsea Women vs Arsenal Women: Is This Exactly the Game Arsenal Need?
2026/09/26
Arsenal head to Stamford Bridge on Sunday after a difficult start to the WSL season, but could Chelsea away be exactly the game Renée Slegers’ side need? In this preview, Roberto looks at why Chelsea’s more aggressive approach could finally give Arsenal’s attacking players the space they’ve been missing, the risks that come with that, and the individual battles that could shape the game. There’s also the big selection question. Does Kyra Cooney-Cross start after her Player of the Match performance against Køge? Who plays alongside Mariona Caldentey and Georgia Stanway? Does Chloe Kelly get the nod? And surely it’s finally time to see Géraldine Reuteler in an Arsenal shirt? Plus, Katie McCabe prepares to face Arsenal as a Chelsea player, Olivia Smith could find herself up against Lucy Bronze and Roberto makes his prediction for Stamford Bridge. Emily Fox STAYS! New Arsenal Deal + Arsenal Women News
2026/09/25
Emily Fox is staying at Arsenal! Arsenal Women have confirmed that Fox has signed a new contract and we're taking the opportunity to look beyond the announcement at just how important she's become since arriving in January 2024, what makes her such a special full-back and why the emergence of Smilla Holmberg could make the next few seasons even more interesting. There's also the latest Arsenal injury picture ahead of Chelsea, including Élisa De Almeida, Daphne van Domselaar, Katie Reid and Michelle Agyemang. Plus, we head into the Arsenal academy for the first of what could become regular Trailblazers updates, with the U21s enjoying a strong week and four youngsters registered for the Champions League. And finally... Disney+ have explained why those of us watching Arsenal against HB Køge suddenly found ourselves watching adverts while the match was still being played. The Chelsea preview is coming tomorrow. For today, here's everything happening around Arsenal Women. Arsenal Women: Trailblazers is a regular fan podcast dedicated to Arsenal Women. Arsenal 1-0 HB Køge: 21 Shots, 2 on Target… What’s Going Wrong?
2026/09/23
Arsenal Women have started their Champions League campaign with three points, but they left it incredibly late against HB Køge at Meadow Park. Mariona Caldentey’s stoppage-time penalty eventually secured a 1-0 win after Selina Cerci drove into the box and forced the challenge, but the numbers tell you plenty about the 90 minutes that came before it: 70% possession, 21 shots and only two on target. So why are Arsenal still finding it so difficult to turn all of that possession and attacking territory into good chances? In this episode, Roberto looks at Arsenal’s decision-making in the final third, another impressive performance from Smilla Holmberg, the directness Kyra Cooney-Cross brought to midfield, Chloe Kelly’s threat and why Cerci offered something different when she finally arrived. There’s also credit for an extremely well-organised HB Køge side and a promising first Arsenal start for Anneke Borbe. Arsenal have the three points. Now they need to find the goals. Arsenal vs HB Køge: Is It Time to Unleash Cerci & Reuteler?
2026/09/22
Arsenal Women’s Champions League campaign starts tonight as Danish side HB Køge visit Meadow Park, and this feels like the perfect opportunity for Renée Slegers to start using the depth of the squad she’s built. HB Køge arrive in excellent form. They’re top of the Danish league, have won seven of their opening eight matches and came through Champions League qualifying unbeaten, including a 2-1 aggregate victory over PSV Eindhoven. So Arsenal should expect to win, but this isn’t a game to take lightly.  In this episode, Roberto looks at who HB Køge are, where they can hurt Arsenal and what Arsenal need to do to start their European campaign with three points. Then we get into the team selection. Does Selina Cerci finally start through the middle? Is it time to bring Géraldine Reuteler into midfield? Could Smilla Holmberg start again after changing the game at the weekend? And what would an Arsenal attack built around getting earlier deliveries into Cerci look like?  Plus, Roberto picks his Arsenal starting XI, with plenty of rotation and a few combinations we’ve been waiting to see.
