Welcome to the podcast "Unlock your Greek" with Thanos and Nevena! In this unique podcast, we discuss daily topics that are important for anyone learning Greek as a foreign language, as well as for those already living in Greece or planning to move there. This podcast is suitable for everyone - from beginners to advanced learners. Όλα που μας εκνευρίζουν - advanced (B1.2-C1)
2026/10/20
My name is Nevena. Thanos [00:03] Και σας καλωσορίζουμε σε άλλο ένα επεισόδιο του Unlock Your Greek Podcast. And we welcome you to another episode of the Unlock Your Greek Podcast. Welcome to another episode of our podcast, and I'm noticing now that you're squinting a bit because you're not wearing your glasses and you can't see well. Yes, for everyone watching us on video, you'll see Thanos doing this a little. Thanos [00:23] Θα προσπαθήσω να μην το κάνω. I'll try not to do it. So, today we want to talk about a slightly funny topic. We want to talk about all the things that annoy us. And before we start, I want to explain the word 'osa.' Και Θάνο, όταν ακούς τη λέξη εκνευρισμός, τι είναι το πρώτο που σου περνάει από το μυαλό; Τι είναι το πρώτο πράγμα – μπορεί να είναι και μικρό και μεγάλο – που να σκέφτεσαι «πω, αυτό με εκνευρίζει απίστευτα πολύ»; Because one of the titles of this episode could be 'all the things that annoy us' ('ola osa mas eknevrizoun'). That is, all the things that annoy us. And Thanos, when you hear the word 'eknevrismos' (irritation), what's the first thing that comes to mind? What's the first thing – it could be small or big – that makes you think 'wow, this annoys me incredibly'?

Welcome to another episode of our podcast. Today we're going to talk about a funny topic, a topic that isn't very serious. Today we're going to talk about small things, the things that make us feel bad, feel unpleasant, and get angry. Thanos [00:32] Ναι. Yes. The first thing that comes to my mind is when I'm waiting in a queue to do something, to hand in a paper, to go to the bank, and this long wait annoys me. Yes, when we also have an appointment, for example, and we go to the bank at exactly 9, or we go to the post office, or we go to the doctor, or we go somewhere, and we have to wait more than 15 minutes, that is, more than a quarter of an hour, I think it's very annoying. That is, it's something we don't like at all. And you know that...
Welcome to another episode of our podcast. Thanos is still a little bit under the weather, so that's why he sounds a bit off. And it's also early in the morning. Yes, we're still... we're a bit stuffed up. But it should probably clear up by tomorrow or the day after. Something I find very interesting is that Greeks still take tests for the coronavirus. Because they still think they might have caught the coronavirus and that they need to take a test to know. Yes, yes, they still sell some things, some rapid tests, something for viruses and for flu, I think, and for the coronavirus. I know... some people do take them. Πόσο σημαντική είναι η ελληνική μυθολογία για σένα, Θάνο; When we talk about these topics, I always think of Greek mythology first. I know that a lot of my students learn Greek because they started reading and watching Greek mythology when they were little, and they liked Greece in general. How important is Greek mythology to you, Thanos? Yes, when I was little at school, instead of history we had Greek mythology, and we learned about the labours of Heracles, about Odysseus and the Minotaur, about the Golden Fleece, and in general, when we were little, they taught us Greek mythology at school.  Become a member to unlock the whole transcript!

Today we want to talk about a relaxed topic, since Thanos is a bit unwell right now. Yes, if I sound a bit strange it's because I'm a bit unwell, so we'll try to keep the conversation flowing smoothly. And I hear from everyone that they're sick, it's a cold I think, not a flu, I don't know what's going around, but yes, everyone's getting sick right now. Yeah, I probably caught it somewhere. And outside you hear everyone sneezing, coughing. It's that time of year. Become a member to unlock the whole transcript!

Today we want to talk about whether life has become easier or harder with all the new technologies and conveniences we now have in everyday life. That is, we see that in recent years...our daily life is changing at a rapid pace. That is, we see that every day there are new apps, there are other ways to make life more convenient, to make it more comfortable, so that we don't even need to get up from our couch, and everything just gets done. And at first glance it might seem like this is good and that it helps us, that it generally makes our life a lot easier, and yet I believe that's not the whole truth. Welcome to another episode of our podcast. Today we're going to talk about animals, and more specifically about pets, which, in case you don't know, are the animals we keep at home. And here we see the root 'oikia' – 'katoikidio,' that is, something that is found in the 'oikia,' in our home. I don't know if you remember, but in the previous episode we mentioned that we now have a pet ourselves too, Sevro, a little kitten. He should logically be three months old now. Three months... two months. He's crazy and playful.

Welcome to another episode of our podcast. Today we want to talk about animals. We want to talk about the animals we keep at home. And we call these animals 'katoikidia' (pets). Because the word 'oikia' is like the word 'spiti' (house). That is, it's something we have in our house. First we're going to talk about what changes we see in our lives with a pet, and what the positives are. Become a member to unlock the whole transcript!

Welcome to another episode of our podcast. Today we want to talk about foreign languages, but before we continue with our episode, we want to tell you that the reason we'll be laughing now and then, or the reason you might hear a strange sound now and then, is that we got a two-month-old kitten, so he's really playful right now. He's always playing, always running around our feet, and so on, so you should know he's responsible for the strange sounds. Νέβενα, εσύ σαν καθηγήτρια και σαν φιλόλογος, τι έχεις να μας πεις για αυτό το θέμα; Yes, we have a new member now, and we'll show him in our podcast's video on Patreon too. And now we're going to talk about foreign languages in this episode. Nevena, as a teacher and a philologist, what do you have to tell us about this topic?

Nevena, as a philologist and a foreign language teacher, what do you have to tell us about foreign languages? I think about foreign languages very often, because I don't just teach them, I also learn foreign languages in my free time. That is, I really like them, and I like talking about foreign languages.

Welcome to another episode of our podcast. Today we want to talk about families and friendships here in Greece. Yes, today we'll mostly talk about Greek families, and, as you know, there are a lot of stereotypes about the Greek family, and those expressions you've heard or seen on social media that say a lot about mothers, who – Greek mothers – are very overprotective.

Family here in Greece is very important and plays a big role. All the stereotypes you see about the Greek family on social media – they're all true. And we welcome you to another episode of the Unlock Your Greek Podcast. Welcome to another episode of our podcast. Today we're going to talk about festivals and 'panigiria' in Greece, and I think this will be another really interesting topic, but I have to admit I don't actually know that much about panigiria specifically, because I haven't had the chance to go to one yet. Still, I think Greece is famous for its panigiria, and in general they're really well known, and a lot of foreigners come here just for these panigiria, say, in Patra or Xanthi. So, Nevena, are you saying Greece is 'for the panigiria'? There's actually an expression we have: 'you're for the panigiria.'
