Devo 122: Can A Vow Be Canceled?
2026/10/20
This devotional examines the biblical principles for disannulling vows as outlined in Numbers 30, emphasizing the role of spiritual authority within the family structure. It explains that a father or husband may cancel a vow made by a daughter or wife if they were unaware of it at the time it was made, provided the cancellation occurs upon hearing of it. The teaching uses a pastoral illustration of a wife whose unrealistic vow to read the Bible for an hour daily was disannulled by her husband, allowing her to maintain a sustainable spiritual discipline. The message extends to the broader importance of integrity, urging parents and leaders to be careful with their words and to teach children the seriousness of keeping promises to avoid causing emotional harm and spiritual confusion.
1 Timothy 5:3-16 Widows Indeed - Adult Sunday School
2026/10/20
This sermon examines the biblical qualifications for a 'widow indeed' as outlined in 1 Timothy 5, contrasting her spiritual maturity with the carnal lifestyle of those who live for pleasure. The central message emphasizes that true godliness is demonstrated through a consistent walk of trust in God, persistent prayer, and the fulfillment of familial duties, particularly the obligation of children to care for their aging parents. The text warns against the spiritual deadness that results from prioritizing rest and self-indulgence over the work of the Spirit, citing the church at Sardis as a parallel example. It further instructs the congregation on the importance of maintaining good works, such as hospitality and charity, which serve as evidence of genuine faith and protect the church from being burdened by those who have family support. The tone is instructional and convicting, urging believers to examine their own lives for signs of idleness, gossip, or a lack of duty, and to instead cultivate a character that honors God through practical love and self-sacrifice.

Loving Men in Light of the Lord
2026/10/19
Pastor walks his children through Children's Catechism question 75—especially explaining how the last six commandments apply the knowledge and love of God to how we love ourselves and others. Q75. What do the last six commandments teach? Our duty to our fellow men. This lesson explores the theological foundation of the last six commandments, identifying them as a summary of humanity's duty to fellow men. It clarifies that these commandments are not merely social rules but are rooted in the reality that all people are created in the image of God. The teaching corrects the modern notion of self-love as self-indulgence, arguing instead that proper self-regard and neighborly love are derived from, and defined by, God's law. By examining specific commandments regarding authority, life, marriage, property, truth, and desire, the lesson demonstrates how interacting with others is fundamentally an act of interacting with God. The central message emphasizes that our conduct toward neighbors is a direct reflection of our understanding of God's character and our own identity as His image-bearers.
Training the Heart
2026/10/19
Why are the Rod and Reproof so necessary? Proverbs 29:1–15 looks forward to the midweek sermon. In these fifteen verses of Holy Scripture, the Holy Spirit teaches us that the rod and reproof are means that God uses to conform a child to Christ. The devotional explores the divine purpose behind parental discipline, explaining that the combination of verbal rebuke and physical correction is essential for training a child to receive God's Word. It contrasts the tragic trajectory of a child left to himself, who hardens his heart and harms self and others, with the wisdom cultivated through consistent, loving correction. The text emphasizes that this discipline is not an end in itself but serves the rebuke, which is a means of grace by which Christ brings the child to repentance and faith in Himself. The message urges parents to trust in God's sovereignty to use these instruments for the spiritual formation of their children, lest they end up in themselves rather than in Christ and like Christ.

A New Testament Family
2026/10/18
This sermon explores the book of Philemon as a portrait of the gospel manifested in everyday family life, focusing on the first three verses to highlight the character of Philemon, Apphia, and Archippus. The central message emphasizes that faith is not merely a religious observance but a practical reality that transforms relationships within the home. Philemon is presented as a model of self-sacrificial love and active labor in ministry, while Apphia exemplifies loyalty and support for her husband and children. Archippus is described as a young believer who endures the hardships of spiritual warfare as a fellow soldier of Christ. The exposition concludes by asserting that even such a devoted family requires God's grace and peace to navigate the challenges of ministry and domestic life, urging believers to rely on divine help rather than human effort.

"Homeward Bound: The Reverent Redeemed"
2026/10/18
What are Christians like? How are Christians different from our unsaved neighbors, coworkers, and friends as we journey through life in a world that is not our home? Christians are hopeful, says 1 Peter 1:13. Christians are holy, says verse 15. And Christians are reverent; we live in the fear of the Lord. "If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one's work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your sojourn," 1 Peter 1:17 (LSB). God's children live with reverent awe before their Father and Judge, knowing that He evaluates everything in our lives impartially. Ours is not the fear of condemnation awaiting those who have no refuge from God's wrath; it is the reverence of those who belong to a holy God and take seriously how they live before Him. Why do we live this way? Because we've been redeemed with the precious blood of Christ. Christians are the reverent redeemed. This Lord's Day, we'll continue our look at 1 Peter 1 and its call to godly living in a God-denying world. Join us as we consider, "Homeward Bound: The Reverent Redeemed." Prepare for Sunday: Read and meditate on 1 Peter 1:13-21, focusing on verses 17-21. Also read 2 Corinthians 5:9-10 and 1 John 3:1-3. What reasons does Peter give for Christians to live in reverent fear? How should we understand the call to fear God in light of the Bible's teaching that believers are forgiven and accepted by God? How should knowing that God judges impartially—and that Christ has redeemed us at such a cost—change the way we live?
A Burning Fiery Furnace
2026/10/18
Dan 3:21 Then these men were bound in their coats, their hosen, and their hats, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. Dan 3:22 Therefore because the king's commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Dan 3:23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. Dan 3:24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. Dan 3:25 He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God. Dan 3:26 Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace, and spake, and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, ye servants of the most high God, come forth, and come hither. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, came forth of the midst of the fire.

(18) Prepare for Christ the Judge
2026/10/18
Christ is "coming again to judge the living and the dead." That is one of the basic truths believers confess. So important is the final judgment that the Bible devotes almost an entire book to that theme. Revelation reveals the closing chapters of the great drama of human history—the conflict between the offspring of the serpent and the offspring of the woman. In the judgment God will affirm his love to his dear children. But upon those who reject him and have sided with Satan will be judged. The seven bowls of God's wrath are Scriptures most intense portrayal of God's judgment. Whatever we feel about the judgment, it is coming. But we ought to feel something about the judgment. More than that, we ought to respond with godly zeal to the warnings God gives about the judgment. In Revelation, the Lord previews for his church "the things that must soon take place" to encourage them as they endure tribulation (Rev. 1:9).
