2202 - Pitching Sleepers
2024/02/25
Segment 1 – News and Notes 1.Help me understand the Marlins signing of Tim Anderson. He’s there starting shortstop after posting a .245/.286/.296 slash line. That’s a .296 SLG! Nothing in his data points to a bounce back. Tim, what are they doing? 2.Riley Greene and Manny Machado were both questionable entering spring training but are scheduled to make their debuts next week. Are you moving them up in your draft rankings? 3.The Pirates signed a player! Mitch Keller signed a 5-year, $77 million contract this week. It seems pretty cheap, given how little pitching there is. a.Stat line for 2024 – IP, Ks, and ERA 4.Yuki Matsui looked impressive on Thursday. He struck out the side in 12 pitches. Remind everyone of your view on the Padres bullpen situation. 5.Casey Mize appears to be ready to go this spring, and few people are talking about him. He was a target of mine in Dynasty League startups, as people seem to have forgotten about him. After all, he was drafted 1:1 just a few years ago. Your thoughts on him? a.BTW, did you see that Skubal was throwing 100 MPH last week? 6.Kodai Senga. Yikes. Any early thoughts on who the Mets will turn to? 7.Aaron Judge this week said that his injured toe will require “constant maintenance” for the REST OF HIS CAREER! What? Do you downshift at all on him at the draft table? What about in Dynasty Leagues? a.Speaking of the Yankees…did you see Giancarlos Stanton? He looks like he lost 40 pounds. Segment 2 – Pitcher Sleepers. We will start to lay out our sleeper for the year. Please come up with five guys. My guys are below with a few extras. 1.Pablo Lopez (Min, 37.6) – Ace-level quality that you can get in the third round 2.Shane Bieber (Cle, 140.59) – His velo has taken a tick up this season, and that has been a problem for him over the past couple of years. I’ll take a gamble in the 9th round. 3.Nestor Cortes (NYY, 238.31) – Cortes’ data looks great and if he can stay healthy, he’s a steal in 15 to 16th round. 4.Casey Mize (Det, 415) – If he’s healthy, there are some pitch changes he’s made that should play well. 5.Christian Scott (NYM, 644) – With the injury to Senga, I like the setup for Scott this season. 6.Nick Nastrini (CHW, 665) – Four pitches, fastball up to 96. He’s a bit of a fly-ball hitter, and that could be problematic in Chicago, but overall, there is a #3 starter upside. 7.Cade Povich (Bal, 809) – The Orioles will need pitching help this season and I believe Povich could help. It’s a 94 to 95 MPH fastball with a high spin from the left side. He just needs to throw more strikes. Close

2199 - Top 10 mistakes to avoid at the draft table
2024/02/18
Fantasy Baseball Live – February 18, 2024 Segment 1 – 10 mistakes to avoid at the draft table 1.Here are my five a.Don’t fall in love with a player and overdraft him. b.With catchers and pitchers reporting, it’s time to downshift on the big five Boras clients who have not signed. c.I know people are buying into the hype of Yamamoto, and he could be great. Be careful not to overdraft him, as he’s yet to pitch in the major leagues. He’s going as a fantasy ace. Just understand the risk if you make the pick. d.Best shape of my life translate into (I might have screwed up last season). I put on 20 pounds of muscle many times, translating to putting on weight (some good, some bad). VS. My fastball has increased velo by a meaningful amount. I’m going to add more launch to hit more home runs. i.Look for tangible changes, not platitudes, to alter your draft plan. e.If you don’t like a player, don’t draft him, no matter what others say. I will retell my Yasmanny Tomas story. Segment 2 - News and Notes 1.The spring has started off very poorly for the Orioles a.John Means admits he’ll likely start on the IL b.Even worse, Kyle Bradish has a torn UCL. He received a PRP injection and hopes to pitch again after rest and rehab. Uh oh... 2.The D-Backs sign Randal Grichuk. Any interest? Who loses playing time? 3.Josh Jung has been pushed back 2 to 3 weeks with a left calf strain. Any concerns? a.Does Justin Foscue get a chance this season? 4.With the addition of Dan Voglebach to the Blue Jays, A lot of online mems going around about the size of some of the Blue Jays (Vlad, Kirk, and Manoah) a.That said, Vlad has lost weight, and Manoah also looks to have. Thoughts? 5.Whitt Merrifield signs with the Phillies for $8 million, and it looks like he’ll be the super-sub. a.Stat line for 2024 – AB, HR, SB and BA 6.With the injury news and possible trade involving Kenley Jansen all over the place, you are suggesting people pick up Chris Martin. Can you elaborate?

Fantasy Baseball Live – February 4, 2024 Segment 1 – News and Notes 1.The Angelos family agreed to sell their team to a group headed by famed private equity manager David Rubenstein. Also included in the team is HOFer Cal Ripken and former NYC mayor and billionaire Mike Bloomberg. The Angelos family still has a controlling interest but has agreed to sell the team upon the passing of Peter Angelos, who is 94 and in failing health. a.While this doesn’t guarantee that the new ownership group will spend money, the Angelos family was not going to. Therefore, I think it’s a good thing for the Orioles franchise. Your thoughts? 2.Perhaps related to the sale, the following day, the Orioles acquired Corbin Burnes from the Brewers for IF Joey Ortiz, LHP DL Hall and the Orioles 1st round competitive balance pick (Pick #34). a.What did you think of the deal? Was it a win-win or did one side get the better of the other? b.You have to like the Orioles top three starters now in Burnes, G. Rodriguez and Kyle Bradish, no? c.Do you think the Brewers had to do this deal as the likelihood of signing Burnes, a Boras client, was next to zero? d.Are you investing in either Hall or Ortiz? 3.The A’s acquire Ross Stripling. It’s not great stuff but he throws strikes. Any interest? Segment 3 – Starting Pitching Preview (We will likely do two podcast) 1.How are you approaching this position for your upcoming drafts? 2.We will break down the top 30 to 45 in detail. Then, go through the next 30 in less detail. We will end by jumping around the remaining ranked players. 3.Which player not in the Top 15 has a chance to emerge there next season? 4.Which Top 15 player will not be there next season? 5.Give me a couple of sleepers 6.Give me one, maybe two guys you will just avoid drafting?

2192 - AL West Prospects - Part 1
2024/02/03
Tim interviews Rich on the AL West
2191 - Rich answers your Prospect Questions (Part 2)
2024/02/02
Prospect Questions – Part 2 Q1 – Greg K. (Patreon) 1.Prospect cut-down day after FYPDs is always tricky. Any thoughts on the general makeup of your prospects? For example, do you lean a certain percentage hitter vs. pitcher? Floor vs. upside? Positional need vs. best players available? Thanks, Rich! Q2 – Bob K (Patreon) Darren Bowen was one of the prospects traded to the Twins as part of the Polanco deal. I had not heard much, if anything, about him until now. Curious as to your thoughts. Thanks! Q3 – John D (Patreon) My favorite thing on the Patreon service is your breakdown of players using baseballsavant. I’ve learned so much, but still have a long way to go. You’ve mentioned several times that if a player adds loft, they could also see an increase in their strikeout rate. Why is this? Thanks and keep up the great work. Q4 – Jon Dean (Patreon) Would like to hear a breakdown of the top college prospect, JJ Weatherholt. Is he a Gunnar Henderson type or a Bryson Stott type? West Virginia minds are inquiring. Q5 - Matt D (Patreon) 1.What happened to Jacob Berry? They don't give $6M bonuses to just anyone. 2.Is D.J. Herz a closer in waiting? And should I care? Q6 - Mike H (Patreon) 1.Hey rich, what would you do in dynasty with prospects who are no longer prospects. For me I have guys like Alec Burleson, Mark Vientos, Jordan Diaz and Drew Waters. These are four edge cases I have to make choices on. I can see scenarios where maybe one of them breaks out but it’s so hard, especially with a competitive team. Thanks! Q7 - Dustin P (Patreon) 1.How about Paul Skenes. I want him in a dynasty league but he’s with the pirates and that scares me. I’m leaning towards taking Dylan Crews. Q8 - Albert C (Patreon) 1.Over the next 5 years who has 1st round upside with an adjustment to their profile? You were so good in pointing out Acuna before most. Who are we etching into our wood tables?
