Proper 8 First Psalm: Psalm 106:1–18 Psalm 106:1–18 (Listen) Give Thanks to the Lord, for He Is Good 106   Praise the LORD!   Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,     for his steadfast love endures forever! 2   Who can utter the mighty deeds of the LORD,     or declare all his praise? 3   Blessed are they who observe justice,     who do righteousness at all times! 4   Remember me, O LORD, when you show favor to your people;     help me when you save them,1 5   that I may look upon the prosperity of your chosen ones,     that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation,     that I may glory with your inheritance. 6   Both we and our fathers have sinned;     we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness. 7   Our fathers, when they were in Egypt,     did not consider your wondrous works;   they did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love,     but rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea. 8   Yet he saved them for his name’s sake,     that he might make known his mighty power. 9   He rebuked the Red Sea, and it became dry,     and he led them through the deep as through a desert. 10   So he saved them from the hand of the foe     and redeemed them from the power of the enemy. 11   And the waters covered their adversaries;     not one of them was left. 12   Then they believed his words;     they sang his praise. 13   But they soon forgot his works;     they did not wait for his counsel. 14   But they had a wanton craving in the wilderness,     and put God to the test in the desert; 15   he gave them what they asked,     but sent a wasting disease among them. 16   When men in the camp were jealous of Moses     and Aaron, the holy one of the LORD, 17   the earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,     and covered the company of Abiram. 18   Fire also broke out in their company;     the flame burned up the wicked. Footnotes [1] 106:4 Or Remember me, O Lord, with the favor you show to your people; help me with your salvation (ESV) Second Psalm: Psalm 106:19–48 Psalm 106:19–48 (Listen) 19   They made a calf in Horeb     and worshiped a metal image. 20   They exchanged the glory of God1     for the image of an ox that eats grass. 21   They forgot God, their Savior,     who had done great things in Egypt, 22   wondrous works in the land of Ham,     and awesome deeds by the Red Sea. 23   Therefore he said he would destroy them—     had not Moses, his chosen one,   stood in the breach before him,     to turn away his wrath from destroying them. 24   Then they despised the pleasant land,     having no faith in his promise. 25   They murmured in their tents,     and did not obey the voice of the LORD. 26   Therefore he raised his hand and swore to them     that he would make them fall in the wilderness, 27   and would make their offspring fall among the nations,     scattering them among the lands. 28   Then they yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor,     and ate sacrifices offered to the dead; 29   they provoked the LORD to anger with their deeds,     and a plague broke out among them. 30   Then Phinehas stood up and intervened,     and the plague was stayed. 31   And that was counted to him as righteousness     from generation to generation forever. 32   They angered him at the waters of Meribah,     and it went ill with Moses on their account, 33   for they made his spirit bitter,2     and he spoke rashly with his lips. 34   They did not destroy the peoples,     as the LORD commanded them, 35   but they mixed with

Proper 8 First Psalm: Psalm 118 Psalm 118 (Listen) His Steadfast Love Endures Forever 118   Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;     for his steadfast love endures forever! 2   Let Israel say,     “His steadfast love endures forever.” 3   Let the house of Aaron say,     “His steadfast love endures forever.” 4   Let those who fear the LORD say,     “His steadfast love endures forever.” 5   Out of my distress I called on the LORD;     the LORD answered me and set me free. 6   The LORD is on my side; I will not fear.     What can man do to me? 7   The LORD is on my side as my helper;     I shall look in triumph on those who hate me. 8   It is better to take refuge in the LORD     than to trust in man. 9   It is better to take refuge in the LORD     than to trust in princes. 10   All nations surrounded me;     in the name of the LORD I cut them off! 11   They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side;     in the name of the LORD I cut them off! 12   They surrounded me like bees;     they went out like a fire among thorns;     in the name of the LORD I cut them off! 13   I was pushed hard,1 so that I was falling,     but the LORD helped me. 14   The LORD is my strength and my song;     he has become my salvation. 15   Glad songs of salvation     are in the tents of the righteous:   “The right hand of the LORD does valiantly, 16     the right hand of the LORD exalts,     the right hand of the LORD does valiantly!” 17   I shall not die, but I shall live,     and recount the deeds of the LORD. 18   The LORD has disciplined me severely,     but he has not given me over to death. 19   Open to me the gates of righteousness,     that I may enter through them     and give thanks to the LORD. 20   This is the gate of the LORD;     the righteous shall enter through it. 21   I thank you that you have answered me     and have become my salvation. 22   The stone that the builders rejected     has become the cornerstone.2 23   This is the LORD’s doing;     it is marvelous in our eyes. 24   This is the day that the LORD has made;     let us rejoice and be glad in it. 25   Save us, we pray, O LORD!     O LORD, we pray, give us success! 26   Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD!     We bless you from the house of the LORD. 27   The LORD is God,     and he has made his light to shine upon us.   Bind the festal sacrifice with cords,     up to the horns of the altar! 28   You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;     you are my God; I will extol you. 29   Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;     for his steadfast love endures forever! Of David. 145   I will extol you, my God and King,     and bless your name forever and ever. 2   Every day I will bless you     and praise your name forever and ever. 3   Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised,     and his greatness is unsearchable. 4   One generation shall commend your works to another,     and shall declare your mighty acts. 5   On the glorious splendor of your majesty,     and on your wondrous works, I will meditate. 6   They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,     and I will declare your greatness. 7   They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness     and shall sing aloud of your righteousness. 8   The LORD i

Proper 7 First Psalm: Psalms 107:33–108:13 Psalms 107:33–108:13 (Listen) 33   He turns rivers into a desert,     springs of water into thirsty ground, 34   a fruitful land into a salty waste,     because of the evil of its inhabitants. 35   He turns a desert into pools of water,     a parched land into springs of water. 36   And there he lets the hungry dwell,     and they establish a city to live in; 37   they sow fields and plant vineyards     and get a fruitful yield. 38   By his blessing they multiply greatly,     and he does not let their livestock diminish. 39   When they are diminished and brought low     through oppression, evil, and sorrow, 40   he pours contempt on princes     and makes them wander in trackless wastes; 41   but he raises up the needy out of affliction     and makes their families like flocks. 42   The upright see it and are glad,     and all wickedness shuts its mouth. 43   Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things;     let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD. With God We Shall Do Valiantly A Song. A Psalm of David. 108   My heart is steadfast, O God!     I will sing and make melody with all my being!1 2   Awake, O harp and lyre!     I will awake the dawn! 3   I will give thanks to you, O LORD, among the peoples;     I will sing praises to you among the nations. 4   For your steadfast love is great above the heavens;     your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. 5   Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!     Let your glory be over all the earth! 6   That your beloved ones may be delivered,     give salvation by your right hand and answer me! 7   God has promised in his holiness:2     “With exultation I will divide up Shechem     and portion out the Valley of Succoth. 8   Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine;     Ephraim is my helmet,     Judah my scepter. 9   Moab is my washbasin;     upon Edom I cast my shoe;     over Philistia I shout in triumph.” 10   Who will bring me to the fortified city?     Who will lead me to Edom? 11   Have you not rejected us, O God?     You do not go out, O God, with our armies. 12   Oh grant us help against the foe,     for vain is the salvation of man! 13   With God we shall do valiantly;     it is he who will tread down our foes. Footnotes [1] 108:1 Hebrew with my glory [2] 108:7 Or sanctuary (ESV) Second Psalm: Psalm 33 Psalm 33 (Listen) The Steadfast Love of the Lord 33   Shout for joy in the LORD, O you righteous!     Praise befits the upright. 2   Give thanks to the LORD with the lyre;     make melody to him with the harp of ten strings! 3   Sing to him a new song;     play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts. 4   For the word of the LORD is upright,     and all his work is done in faithfulness. 5   He loves righteousness and justice;     the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD. 6   By the word of the LORD the heavens were made,     and by the breath of his mouth all their host. 7   He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap;     he puts the deeps in storehouses. 8   Let all the earth fear the LORD;     let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him! 9   For he spoke, and it came to be;     he commanded, and it stood firm. 10   The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;     he frustrates the plans of the peoples. 11   The counsel of the LORD stands forever,     the plans of his heart to all generations. 12   Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,     the people whom he has chosen as his her

Proper 7 First Psalm: Psalm 102 Psalm 102 (Listen) Do Not Hide Your Face from Me A Prayer of one afflicted, when he is faint and pours out his complaint before the LORD. 102   Hear my prayer, O LORD;   let my cry come to you! 2   Do not hide your face from me     in the day of my distress!   Incline your ear to me;     answer me speedily in the day when I call! 3   For my days pass away like smoke,     and my bones burn like a furnace. 4   My heart is struck down like grass and has withered;     I forget to eat my bread. 5   Because of my loud groaning     my bones cling to my flesh. 6   I am like a desert owl of the wilderness,     like an owl1 of the waste places; 7   I lie awake;     I am like a lonely sparrow on the housetop. 8   All the day my enemies taunt me;     those who deride me use my name for a curse. 9   For I eat ashes like bread     and mingle tears with my drink, 10   because of your indignation and anger;     for you have taken me up and thrown me down. 11   My days are like an evening shadow;     I wither away like grass. 12   But you, O LORD, are enthroned forever;     you are remembered throughout all generations. 13   You will arise and have pity on Zion;     it is the time to favor her;     the appointed time has come. 14   For your servants hold her stones dear     and have pity on her dust. 15   Nations will fear the name of the LORD,     and all the kings of the earth will fear your glory. 16   For the LORD builds up Zion;     he appears in his glory; 17   he regards the prayer of the destitute     and does not despise their prayer. 18   Let this be recorded for a generation to come,     so that a people yet to be created may praise the LORD: 19   that he looked down from his holy height;     from heaven the LORD looked at the earth, 20   to hear the groans of the prisoners,     to set free those who were doomed to die, 21   that they may declare in Zion the name of the LORD,     and in Jerusalem his praise, 22   when peoples gather together,     and kingdoms, to worship the LORD. 23   He has broken my strength in midcourse;     he has shortened my days. 24   “O my God,” I say, “take me not away     in the midst of my days—   you whose years endure     throughout all generations!” 25   Of old you laid the foundation of the earth,     and the heavens are the work of your hands. 26   They will perish, but you will remain;     they will all wear out like a garment.   You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away, 27     but you are the same, and your years have no end. 28   The children of your servants shall dwell secure;     their offspring shall be established before you. Proper 7 First Psalm: Psalm 105:1–22 Psalm 105:1–22 (Listen) Tell of All His Wondrous Works 105   Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name;     make known his deeds among the peoples! 2   Sing to him, sing praises to him;     tell of all his wondrous works! 3   Glory in his holy name;     let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice! 4   Seek the LORD and his strength;     seek his presence continually! 5   Remember the wondrous works that he has done,     his miracles, and the judgments he uttered, 6   O offspring of Abraham, his servant,     children of Jacob, his chosen ones! 7   He is the LORD our God;     his judgments are in all the earth. 8   He remembers his covenant forever,     the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations, 9   the covenant that he made with Abraham,     his sworn promise to Isaac, 10   which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute,     to Israel as an everlasting covenant, 11   saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan     as your portion for an inheritance.” 12   When they were few in number,     of little account, and sojourners in it, 13   wandering from nation to nation,     from one kingdom to another people, 14   he allowed no one to oppress them;     he rebuked kings on their account, 15   saying, “Touch not my anointed ones,     do my prophets no harm!” 16   When he summoned a famine on the land     and broke all supply1 of bread, 17   he had sent a man ahead of them,     Joseph, who was sold as a slave. 18   His feet were hurt with fetters;     his neck was put in a collar of iron; 19   until what he had said came to pass,     the word of the LORD tested him. 20   The king sent and released him;     the ruler of the peoples set him free; 21   he made him lord of his house     and ruler of all his possessions, 22   to bind2 his princes at his pleasure     and to teach his elders wisdom. A Psalm of David. 109   Be not silent, O God of my praise! 2   For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me,     speaking against me with lying tongues. 3   They encircle me with words of hate,     and attack me without cause. 4   In return for my love they accuse me,     but I give myself to prayer.1 5   So they reward me evil for good,     and hatred for my love. 6   Appoint a wicked man against him;     let an accuser stand at his right hand. 7   When he is tried, let him come forth guilty;     let his prayer be counted as sin! 8   May his days be few;     may another take his office! 9   May his children be fatherless     and his wife a widow! 10   May his children wander about and beg,     seeking food far from the ruins they inhabit! 11   May the creditor seize all that he has;     may strangers plunder the fruits of his toil! 12   Let there be none to extend kindness to him,     nor any to pity his fatherless children! 13   May his posterity be cut off;     may his name be blotted out in the second generation! 14   May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD,     and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out! 15   Let them be before the LORD continually,     that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth! 16   For he did not remember to show kindness,     but pursued the poor and needy     and the brokenhearted, to put them to death. 17   He loved to curse; let curses come2 upon him!     He did not delight in blessing; may it be far3 from him! 18   He clothed himself with cursing as his coat;     may it soak4 into his body like water,     like oil into his bones! 19   May it be like a garment that he wraps around him,     like a belt that he puts on every day! 20   May this be the reward of my accusers from the LORD,     of those who speak evil against my life! 21   But you, O GOD my Lord,     deal on my behalf for your name’s sake;     because your steadfast love is good, deliver me! 22   For I am poor and needy,     and my heart is stricken within me. 23   I am gone like a shadow at evening;     I am shaken off like a locust. 24   My knees are weak through fasting;     my body has become gaunt, with no fat. 25   I am an object of scorn to my accusers;     when they see me, they wag their heads. 26   Help me, O LORD my God!     Save me according to your steadfast love! 27   Le

Proper 7 First Psalm: Psalm 89:1–18 Psalm 89:1–18 (Listen) I Will Sing of the Steadfast Love of the Lord A Maskil1 of Ethan the Ezrahite. 89   I will sing of the steadfast love of the LORD, forever;     with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations. 2   For I said, “Steadfast love will be built up forever;     in the heavens you will establish your faithfulness.” 3   You have said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one;     I have sworn to David my servant: 4   ‘I will establish your offspring forever,     and build your throne for all generations.’” Selah 5   Let the heavens praise your wonders, O LORD,     your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones! 6   For who in the skies can be compared to the LORD?     Who among the heavenly beings2 is like the LORD, 7   a God greatly to be feared in the council of the holy ones,     and awesome above all who are around him? 8   O LORD God of hosts,     who is mighty as you are, O LORD,     with your faithfulness all around you? 9   You rule the raging of the sea;     when its waves rise, you still them. 10   You crushed Rahab like a carcass;     you scattered your enemies with your mighty arm. 11   The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours;     the world and all that is in it, you have founded them. 12   The north and the south, you have created them;     Tabor and Hermon joyously praise your name. 13   You have a mighty arm;     strong is your hand, high your right hand. 14   Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;     steadfast love and faithfulness go before you. 15   Blessed are the people who know the festal shout,     who walk, O LORD, in the light of your face, 16   who exult in your name all the day     and in your righteousness are exalted. 17   For you are the glory of their strength;     by your favor our horn is exalted. 18   For our shield belongs to the LORD,     our king to the Holy One of Israel. Proper 7 First Psalm: Psalms 66–67 Psalms 66–67 (Listen) How Awesome Are Your Deeds To the choirmaster. A Song. A Psalm. 66   Shout for joy to God, all the earth; 2     sing the glory of his name;     give to him glorious praise! 3   Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!     So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you. 4   All the earth worships you     and sings praises to you;     they sing praises to your name.” Selah 5   Come and see what God has done:     he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man. 6   He turned the sea into dry land;     they passed through the river on foot.   There did we rejoice in him, 7     who rules by his might forever,   whose eyes keep watch on the nations—     let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah 8   Bless our God, O peoples;     let the sound of his praise be heard, 9   who has kept our soul among the living     and has not let our feet slip. 10   For you, O God, have tested us;     you have tried us as silver is tried. 11   You brought us into the net;     you laid a crushing burden on our backs; 12   you let men ride over our heads;     we went through fire and through water;   yet you have brought us out to a place of abundance. 13   I will come into your house with burnt offerings;     I will perform my vows to you, 14   that which my lips uttered     and my mouth promised when I was in trouble. 15   I will offer to you burnt offerings of fattened animals,     with the smoke of the sacrifice of rams;   I will make an offering of bulls and goats. Selah 16   Come and hear, all you who fear God,     and I will tell what he has done for my soul. 17   I cried to him with my mouth,     and high praise was on1 my tongue.2 18   If I had cherished iniquity in my heart,     the Lord would not have listened. 19   But truly God has listened;     he has attended to the voice of my prayer. 20   Blessed be God,     because he has not rejected my prayer     or removed his steadfast love from me! Make Your Face Shine upon Us To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Psalm. A Song. 67   May God be gracious to us and bless us     and make his face to shine upon us, Selah 2   that your way may be known on earth,     your saving power among all nations. 3   Let the peoples praise you, O God;     let all the peoples praise you! 4   Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,     for you judge the peoples with equity     and guide the nations upon earth. Selah 5   Let the peoples praise you, O God;     let all the peoples praise you! 6   The earth has yielded its increase;     God, our God, shall bless us. 7   God shall bless us;     let all the ends of the earth fear him! Footnotes [1] 66:17 Hebrew under [2] 66:17 Or and he was exalted with my tongue (ESV) Second Psalm: Psalm 19; Psalm 46 Psalm 19 (Listen) The Law of the Lord Is Perfect To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. 19   The heavens declare the glory of God,     and the sky above1 proclaims his handiwork. 2   Day to day pours out speech,     and night to night reveals knowledge. 3   There is no speech, nor are there words,     whose voice is not heard. 4   Their voice2 goes out through all the earth,     and their words to the end of the world.   In them he has set a tent for the sun, 5     which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,     and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. 6   Its rising is from the end of the heavens,     and its circuit to the end of them,     and ther

Proper 6 First Psalm: Psalm 87; Psalm 90 Psalm 87 (Listen) Glorious Things of You Are Spoken A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. A Song. 87   On the holy mount stands the city he founded; 2     the LORD loves the gates of Zion     more than all the dwelling places of Jacob. 3   Glorious things of you are spoken,     O city of God. Selah 4   Among those who know me I mention Rahab and Babylon;     behold, Philistia and Tyre, with Cush1—     “This one was born there,” they say. 5   And of Zion it shall be said,     “This one and that one were born in her”;     for the Most High himself will establish her. 6   The LORD records as he registers the peoples,     “This one was born there.” Selah 7   Singers and dancers alike say,     “All my springs are in you.” Footnotes [1] 87:4 Probably Nubia (ESV) Psalm 90 (Listen) Book Four From Everlasting to Everlasting A Prayer of Moses, the man of God. 90   Lord, you have been our dwelling place1     in all generations. 2   Before the mountains were brought forth,     or ever you had formed the earth and the world,     from everlasting to everlasting you are God. 3   You return man to dust     and say, “Return, O children of man!”2 4   For a thousand years in your sight     are but as yesterday when it is past,     or as a watch in the night. 5   You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream,     like grass that is renewed in the morning: 6   in the morning it flourishes and is renewed;     in the evening it fades and withers. 7   For we are brought to an end by your anger;     by your wrath we are dismayed. 8   You have set our iniquities before you,     our secret sins in the light of your presence. 9   For all our days pass away under your wrath;     we bring our years to an end like a sigh. 10   The years of our life are seventy,     or even by reason of strength eighty;   yet their span3 is but toil and trouble;     they are soon gone, and we fly away. 11   Who considers the power of your anger,     and your wrath according to the fear of you? 12   So teach us to number our days     that we may get a heart of wisdom. 13   Return, O LORD! How long?     Have pity on your servants! 14   Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love,     that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. 15   Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,     and for as many years as we have seen evil. 16   Let your work be shown to your servants,     and your glorious power to their children. 17   Let the favor4 of the Lord our God be upon us,     and establish the work of our hands upon us;     yes, establish the work of our hands! Proper 6 First Psalm: Psalm 88 Psalm 88 (Listen) I Cry Out Day and Night Before You A Song. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. To the choirmaster: according to Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil1 of Heman the Ezrahite. 88   O LORD, God of my salvation,     I cry out day and night before you. 2   Let my prayer come before you;     incline your ear to my cry! 3   For my soul is full of troubles,     and my life draws near to Sheol. 4   I am counted among those who go down to the pit;     I am a man who has no strength, 5   like one set loose among the dead,     like the slain that lie in the grave,   like those whom you remember no more,     for they are cut off from your hand. 6   You have put me in the depths of the pit,     in the regions dark and deep. 7   Your wrath lies heavy upon me,     and you overwhelm me with all your waves. Selah 8   You have caused my companions to shun me;     you have made me a horror2 to them.   I am shut in so that I cannot escape; 9     my eye grows dim through sorrow.   Every day I call upon you, O LORD;     I spread out my hands to you. 10   Do you work wonders for the dead?     Do the departed rise up to praise you? Selah 11   Is your steadfast love declared in the grave,     or your faithfulness in Abaddon? 12   Are your wonders known in the darkness,     or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? 13   But I, O LORD, cry to you;     in the morning my prayer comes before you. 14   O LORD, why do you cast my soul away?     Why do you hide your face from me? 15   Afflicted and close to death from my youth up,     I suffer your terrors; I am helpless.3 16   Your wrath has swept over me;     your dreadful assaults destroy me. 17   They surround me like a flood all day long;     they close in on me together. 18   You have caused my beloved and my friend to shun me;     my companions have become darkness.4 Footnotes [1] 88:1 Probably musical or liturgical terms [2] 88:8 Or an abomination [3] 88:15 The meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain [4] 88:18 Or darkness has become my only companion (ESV) Second Psalm: Psalms 91–92 Psalms 91–92 (Listen) My Refuge and My Fortress 91   He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High     will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2   I will say1 to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress,     my God, in whom I trust.” 3   For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler     and from the deadly pestilence. 4   He will cover you with his pinions,     and under his wings you will find refuge;     his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. 5   You will not fear the terror of the night,     nor the arrow that flies by day, 6   nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,     nor the destruction that wastes at noonday. 7   A thousand may fall at your side,     ten thousand at your right hand,     but it will not come near you. 8   You will only look with your eyes     and see the recompense of the wicked. 9   Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place—     the Most High, who is my refuge2— 10   no evil shall be allowed to befall you,     no plague come near your tent. 11   For he will command his angels concerning you     to guard you in all your ways. 12   On their hands they will bear you up,     lest you strike your foot against a stone. 13   You will tread on the lion and the adder;     the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot. 14   “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;     I will protect him, because he knows my name.

Proper 6 First Psalm: Psalm 34; Psalm 83 Psalm 34 (Listen) Taste and See That the Lord Is Good 1 Of David, when he changed his behavior before Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away. 34   I will bless the LORD at all times;     his praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2   My soul makes its boast in the LORD;     let the humble hear and be glad. 3   Oh, magnify the LORD with me,     and let us exalt his name together! 4   I sought the LORD, and he answered me     and delivered me from all my fears. 5   Those who look to him are radiant,     and their faces shall never be ashamed. 6   This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him     and saved him out of all his troubles. 7   The angel of the LORD encamps     around those who fear him, and delivers them. 8   Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!     Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! 9   Oh, fear the LORD, you his saints,     for those who fear him have no lack! 10   The young lions suffer want and hunger;     but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. 11   Come, O children, listen to me;     I will teach you the fear of the LORD. 12   What man is there who desires life     and loves many days, that he may see good? 13   Keep your tongue from evil     and your lips from speaking deceit. 14   Turn away from evil and do good;     seek peace and pursue it. 15   The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous     and his ears toward their cry. 16   The face of the LORD is against those who do evil,     to cut off the memory of them from the earth. 17   When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears     and delivers them out of all their troubles. 18   The LORD is near to the brokenhearted     and saves the crushed in spirit. 19   Many are the afflictions of the righteous,     but the LORD delivers him out of them all. 20   He keeps all his bones;     not one of them is broken. 21   Affliction will slay the wicked,     and those who hate the righteous will be condemned. 22   The LORD redeems the life of his servants;     none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned. Footnotes [1] 34:1 This psalm is an acrostic poem, each verse beginning with the successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet (ESV) Psalm 83 (Listen) O God, Do Not Keep Silence A Song. A Psalm of Asaph. 83   O God, do not keep silence;     do not hold your peace or be still, O God! 2   For behold, your enemies make an uproar;     those who hate you have raised their heads. 3   They lay crafty plans against your people;     they consult together against your treasured ones. 4   They say, “Come, let us wipe them out as a nation;     let the name of Israel be remembered no more!” 5   For they conspire with one accord;     against you they make a covenant— 6   the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,     Moab and the Hagrites, 7   Gebal and Ammon and Amalek,     Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre; 8   Asshur also has joined them;     they are the strong arm of the children of Lot. Selah 9   Do to them as you did to Midian,     as to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon, 10   who were destroyed at En-dor,     who became dung for the ground. 11   Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb,     all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna, 12   who said, “Let us take possession for ourselves     of the pastures of God.” 13   O my God, make them like whirling dust,1     like chaff before the wind. 14   As fire consumes the forest,     as the flame sets the mountains ablaze, 15   so may you pursue them with your tempest     and terrify them with your hurricane!
