Episode 599 – Practical Magic 2 / Onslaught / Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty!
2026/09/29
Moviewallas Episode 599 – Practical Magic 2, Onslaught & Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty! One episode away from 600! This week, Joe, Rashmi and Yazdi are back with witches, genetically engineered super-soldiers, ballroom dancing, chicken meat floss pie and a brand-new Moviewallas theme tune. We also have three picks for when you “can’t find anything to watch” – including one thriller that all three of us think you should watch knowing as little as possible. Practical Magic 2 Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman reunite as the Owens sisters almost three decades after the original. The critics and audiences may be divided, but we find plenty to enjoy in this charmingly messy return to the world of Practical Magic. Does everything make sense? Absolutely not. Does that really matter? Maybe not. Onslaught Adam Wingard delivers an old-school siege movie involving genetically engineered super-soldiers, veterans, conspiracies, enormous quantities of weaponry and some spectacularly gruesome violence. Joe detects the DNA of John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13, while Rashmi calls it “ridiculousness at its best.” But is there simply too much going on? Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty! And then we fall in love. Rinko Kikuchi stars in this funny, moving and wonderfully surreal story of grief, love, loss and ballroom dancing in Tokyo. Yazdi calls it “the embodiment of delight.” Joe thinks Kikuchi gives one of his favorite performances of the year. And Rashmi? She has just found her favorite movie of 2026. I Can’t Find Anything to Watch! Rashmi recommends Lupin – the wonderfully playful French crime series starring Omar Sy. Yazdi picks Strange Darling – a twisty, non-chronological thriller that constantly plays with your expectations. Our advice: don’t read about it. Just watch it. Joe recommends Call My Agent: The Movie – a welcome reunion with the characters from the much-loved French series. If you haven’t seen the show, start there first. PLUS… Chicken meat floss pie. Why nobody recognizes Lupin when he puts on a hat. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman becoming the new old Hollywood. Joe’s continuing trauma over Holy Motors. And, as Episode 600 approaches, we debut what might finally be the fully cooked version of the new Moviewallas theme tune. What are you watching? Have you seen any of this week’s movies? And are Rashmi and Yazdi right to be quite so besotted with Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty!? Let us know in the comments. Too many movies. Too little time. Episode 598 – One Night Only / The End of Oak Street / Spider-Man: Brand New Day
2026/08/18
Moviewallas: One Night Only, The End of Oak Street & Spider-Man: Brand New Day This week on Moviewallas, Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi tackle three very different new releases: the high-concept romantic comedy One Night Only, the dinosaur-filled suburban adventure The End of Oak Street, and the latest chapter in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man story, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The team also responds to listener feedback about The Odyssey, including the suggestion that Peter Jackson might have been better suited to tell the story across several films. Then it is time for another edition of “I Can’t Find Anything to Watch…”, with three streaming recommendations and a bonus pick from a listener. Streaming Picks Margot’s Got Money Troubles – Apple TV Rashmi recommends this series starring Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, Nick Offerman, and Greg Kinnear. A college dropout and aspiring writer must find a way to support herself and her new baby while facing a rapidly growing pile of bills. The Room Next Door – Netflix Yazdi recommends Pedro Almodóvar’s thoughtful drama starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. The film explores friendship, dignity, life, death, and the choices people make when confronting mortality. The Dink – Apple TV Joe recommends this warm-hearted pickleball comedy starring Jake Johnson, Mary Steenburgen, and Ed Harris, with appearances from Ben Stiller and several familiar faces. It may lovingly mock the sport and its players, but it also delivers a funny and thoroughly enjoyable Friday-night movie. Bonus Pick: A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder – Netflix Listener Michelle recommends this binge-worthy mystery series for fans of Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys. One Night Only In a fictional New York City where premarital sex and public displays of affection are forbidden for all but one night of the year, two people search for love while repeatedly missing, finding, and losing one another over the course of a single evening. Directed by Will Gluck and starring Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro, the film combines a deliberately absurd premise with the familiar pleasures of a romantic comedy. The hosts discuss the unanswered questions raised by its strange dystopian world, whether the premise needed a sharper political edge, and why none of that ultimately matters when the two leads have such appealing chemistry. Stylish, funny, romantic, and considerably more risqué than its sweet nature initially suggests, One Night Only succeeds by making the audience genuinely care about whether its central couple will find their way to each other. The End of Oak Street Written and directed by David Robert Mitchell, The End of Oak Street follows a suburban family whose neighborhood is transported somewhere unfamiliar after a mysterious cosmic event. Starring Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella, and Christian Convery, the film blends family drama, science fiction, horror, and the nostalgic spirit of 1980s Amblin adventures. The team describes it as Jurassic Park in suburbia – hammy, underwritten, occasionally ridiculous, but enormously entertaining. They discuss its impressive creatures, its surprisingly frightening and violent moments, its commitment to genuine danger, and the way it captures the look and atmosphere of films such as Super 8, E.T., and the classic Spielberg productions of the era. It may not be the film that saves cinema, but it is a loud, tense, nostalgic popcorn movie that deserves to be experienced in a theatre. Spider-Man: Brand New Day Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker in the fourth film of this Spider-Man series, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Following the events of the previous film, Peter is living alone in a world where the people closest to him no longer remember who he is. As he continues his life as Spider-Man, the emotional weight of that loneliness begins to shape his choices. The hosts discuss the film’s quieter and more melancholic tone, its focus on sacrifice and isolation, the importance of revisiting the previous movies before watching, and whether audiences may be feeling some degree of superhero fatigue. While Yazdi questions the reuse of familiar Marvel villains, Rashmi and Joe respond strongly to the film’s emotional core, focused storytelling, and the journey of a Peter Parker forced to ask what a meaningful life looks like when it must be lived alone. The action is polished, but it is the film’s heart, relationships, and sense of longing that make Brand New Day stand out. Episode 597 – Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass / Tony
2026/07/31
Moviewallas: Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass & Tony This week on Moviewallas, Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi review two very different films. First up is Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, a wildly absurd comedy packed with rapid-fire jokes, celebrity cameos, fourth-wall breaks, and a surprising amount of sweetness. Then the team turns to Tony, Matt Johnson’s moving portrait of the formative summer that set a young Anthony Bourdain on the path toward kitchens, writing, and the life that would eventually make him famous. Before the reviews, the hosts return to “I Can’t Find Anything to Watch…” with three streaming recommendations: the heartfelt science-fiction adventure The Adam Project, the brutal medieval thriller Pilgrimage, and Ridley Scott’s inventive historical drama The Last Duel. Streaming Picks The Adam Project – Netflix Rashmi recommends this warm and unexpectedly emotional science-fiction adventure starring Ryan Reynolds. Beneath the time-travel premise is a sweet story about family, regret, and second chances. Pilgrimage – Hulu Yazdi revisits this beautifully shot medieval action drama starring Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal. A novice monk and a mysterious former crusader must transport a sacred relic through dangerous territory. The Last Duel – Hulu Joe recommends Ridley Scott’s powerful historical drama starring Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, and Ben Affleck. Its ingenious structure allows the same events to unfold through several competing perspectives. t Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass When her fiancé acts on their celebrity-pass agreement, Midwest bride Gail Daughtry heads to Hollywood in search of a celebrity encounter of her own. Directed by David Wain and starring Zoey Deutch, the film assembles a huge comic cast that includes Jon Hamm, John Slattery, Ken Marino, Sabrina Impacciatore, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Ben Wang, and many more. The hosts discuss the film’s relentless stream of jokes, its Wizard of Oz influences, its affectionate use of Hollywood caricatures, and the willingness of its celebrity cameos to completely make fools of themselves. It is ridiculous, exhausting, incredibly sweet, and, most importantly, genuinely funny. Tony Director Matt Johnson, whose previous film was BlackBerry, turns his attention to the early life of Anthony Bourdain. The film follows 19-year-old Bourdain as he arrives in Provincetown and stumbles into the chaotic world of restaurant kitchens. Rather than attempting to cover his entire life, Tony concentrates on one formative summer and the people who helped point him toward the career that would eventually define him. The team praises Dominic Sessa for capturing Bourdain’s charm, arrogance, intelligence, and complexity without turning him into a saint. They also discuss the outstanding performances from Antonio Banderas, Leo Woodall, and Emilia Jones, the convincing recreation of the 1970s restaurant world, and the film’s refusal to romanticize the brutal reality of kitchen work. Funny, moving, authentic, and made with enormous affection for Bourdain, this is a biopic that understands the value of focusing on the thing that led to the thing. Episode 596 – The Odyssey
2026/07/22
Welcome back to Moviewallas, your weekly dose of film reviews, movie news, and general banter – in theatres, on streaming, or in the back of an airplane. This week, Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi take on just one movie, but it is a very big one: Christopher Nolan’s sprawling, IMAX-shot adaptation of The Odyssey. Before setting sail, the team celebrates Rashmi’s newly published children’s book, Your Fluff Is Enough, now available through major booksellers. Learn more about Lenny the sheep, the Happy Wiggly farm, and the book’s message of self-acceptance at happywiggly.com. Streaming Picks – “I Can’t Find Anything to Watch…” Remarkably Bright Creatures – Netflix Yazdi recommends this warm adaptation of Shelby Van Pelt’s novel, starring Sally Field as an aquarium custodian whose story unfolds with a little help from a remarkably observant octopus. India Sweets and Spices – Netflix Rashmi revisits this charming indie dramedy about family, community expectations, hidden histories, and a young woman returning home from college. Warrior – Prime Video Joe reaches back into the early Moviewallas archives for this powerful sports drama starring Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, and Nick Nolte. It may look like a conventional fighting movie, but its performances and emotional weight lift it far above the genre clichés. The Odyssey Christopher Nolan takes on one of the oldest and most influential stories ever told, with Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, and a huge ensemble that includes Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Himesh Patel, Samantha Morton, and more. Shot entirely in IMAX, this is Nolan operating at his most ambitious: vast locations, practical filmmaking, mythological creatures, booming sound design, and a story that spans war, guilt, temptation, survival, and the long journey home. The team discusses the film’s extraordinary technical achievement, its unconventional structure, Nolan’s reinterpretation of the story’s women, Matt Damon’s take on Odysseus, and whether all that cinematic majesty comes with enough emotional warmth. They also debate whether Nolan’s devotion to IMAX and fractured timelines strengthens the story or sometimes gets in its way. Despite a few reservations, everyone agrees that The Odyssey demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible. Like, comment, and subscribe if you enjoy spoiler-light movie discussions with strong opinions, mythology tangents, filmmaking analysis, and the occasional debate about whether “Dad” belongs in Ancient Greece. Episode 595 – Pressure / Mortal Kombat 2 / Tuner / Boy George & Culture Club
2026/06/17
This week on Moviewallas, Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi are finally back together and tackling a packed slate of movies and music documentaries. First up is Mortal Kombat 2, the latest entry in the long-running video game franchise. Does it deliver the over-the-top action fans are hoping for, or is it another missed opportunity? Next, the team discusses Pressure, a tense historical drama set around the D-Day invasion that explores the enormous responsibility placed on the meteorologists whose forecasts helped shape the course of history. Then it’s time for Tuner, an intimate character-driven drama that sparks a lively discussion about performance, relationships, and the choices we make when our lives begin to drift out of tune. Finally, the hosts dive into Boy George and Culture Club, a fascinating documentary chronicling the rise, fall, and enduring legacy of one of the most distinctive bands of the 1980s. From the New Romantic movement to personal relationships within the band, it’s a revealing look at the people behind the music. As always, expect plenty of movie banter, strong opinions, and a few unexpected tangents along the way. Episode 594 – The Devil Wears Prada 2 / Mother Mary
2026/05/15
Moviewallas is on YouTube! Welcome back to Moviewallas, your weekly dose of film reviews, movie news, and general banter – in theatres, on streaming, or in the back of an airplane. This week, Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi keep things focused with two very Anne Hathaway-heavy releases: David Lowery’s strange and ambitious Mother Mary and the long-awaited sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2. Streaming Picks – Anne Hathaway Edition WeCrashed – Apple TV+ / Peacock Rashmi recommends this limited series about Adam and Rebekah Neumann and the rise and fall of WeWork, with Anne Hathaway giving a standout performance as Rebekah. Rachel Getting Married Yazdi picks one of Hathaway’s boldest performances – Jonathan Demme’s raw, intimate family drama about addiction, grief, and a wedding weekend on the verge of implosion. The Dark Knight Rises / Interstellar Joe goes full Nolan, spotlighting Hathaway’s sharp, playful turn as Selina Kyle in The Dark Knight Rises, while also giving a nod to her strong work in Interstellar. Mother Mary David Lowery’s latest is a strange, gorgeous, deeply abstract two-hander starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel. Yazdi was the only one to see it, and he makes the case for its committed weirdness, its A24 boldness, and Hathaway’s fearless performance as a pop star on the edge of a comeback. Not for everyone – but absolutely for viewers who like their cinema ambitious, metaphorical, and beautifully shot. The Devil Wears Prada 2 Twenty years after the original, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci return to the world of Runway. The team debates whether this sequel earns its return, whether nostalgia is enough, and why the original remains such a classic. Glossy, fashionable, fun, and a little too lightweight, this one still offers the pleasure of spending time with old friends. Like, comment, and subscribe if you enjoy smart, spoiler-light film discussions with strong opinions, movie love, and the occasional tea-fueled tangent. Episode 593 – The Drama / I Swear / Michael
2026/05/08
Moviewallas is on YouTube! This week on Moviewallas, Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi return from a whirlwind UK trip and jump straight back into movie mode with a packed episode covering three wildly different films. First up is I Swear, the emotionally powerful true story of a Scottish man living with Tourette’s syndrome. Then the hosts dive into The Drama, a provocative and sharply written relationship thriller starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson that sparks one of the podcast’s most fascinating discussions of the year. Finally, they tackle Michael, Antoine Fuqua’s glossy and highly controversial Michael Jackson biopic. Along the way, there are streaming recommendations ranging from Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant empire to the one-take kitchen thriller Boiling Point, plus conversations about morality, celebrity, art versus artist, and whether audiences can ever truly know the people they idolize. Streaming Picks – “I Can’t Find Anything to Watch…” Being Gordon Ramsay – Netflix Rashmi recommends this entertaining behind-the-scenes docuseries following Gordon Ramsay as he prepares to launch his enormous new London restaurant venture at Bishopsgate. Boiling Point – Tubi Yazdi highlights Stephen Graham’s intense single-take restaurant drama – a technical filmmaking achievement capturing one disastrous night inside a London kitchen. Send Help – Hulu / Disney+ Joe revisits one of the team’s favorite films of the year so far, now arriving on streaming platforms after its theatrical run. I Swear Based on the true story of Scottish Tourette’s advocate John Davidson, this heartfelt drama explores misunderstanding, kindness, resilience, and the importance of empathy. Yazdi calls it “the movie we need right now.” The Drama Starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, this provocative relationship thriller takes a single uncomfortable revelation and spirals it into emotional chaos during wedding week. Funny, tense, morally messy, and one of the strongest films of the year according to all three hosts. Michael Antoine Fuqua’s officially sanctioned Michael Jackson biopic delivers nostalgia, iconic music, and fan service in equal measure. The hosts discuss the film’s strengths, its deliberate omissions, and the challenge of separating artistic brilliance from personal controversy. Episode 592 – Project Hail Mary / How To Make A Killing
2026/03/30
Moviewallas is on YouTube! Welcome back to Moviewallas, your weekly dose of film reviews, movie news, and general banter – in theatres, on streaming, or in the back of an airplane. This week, Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi take on two very different movies: the darkly comedic How to Make a Killing and the hugely anticipated, surprisingly emotional Project Hail Mary. Tea check: No new snacks this time – just a fresh round of tea, a little British supermarket hierarchy, and enough energy to power one very enthusiastic space-movie conversation. ⸻ Streaming Picks – “I Can’t Find Anything to Watch…” Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model – Netflix Rashmi revisits the world of America’s Next Top Model through this docuseries, and the group reflects on how wildly our perspective on reality TV, exploitation, and “empowerment” has changed over the last 20 years. Crazy, Stupid, Love – Netflix Yazdi goes with this slick, star-packed romantic dramedy starring Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, Emma Stone, Julianne Moore, Marisa Tomei, Kevin Bacon, and Josh Groban. Contrived? Sure. Still a fun watch? Also yes. Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man – Netflix (coming March 20) Joe makes a rare future-facing pick, getting excited for the return of Tommy Shelby and the Peaky Blinders universe. Here’s hoping the movie has a story worthy of the comeback. How to Make a Killing John Patton Ford follows up Emily the Criminal with this dark comedy about inheritance, murder, and family dysfunction. Starring Glen Powell, Margaret Qualley, and Ed Harris, the film gave the hosts plenty to chew on. Project Hail Mary This one gets a full-throated reaction. Based on the Andy Weir novel and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Project Hail Mary stars Ryan Gosling as a man waking up alone on a spaceship with Earth’s future in his hands. Joe and Yazdi came in with serious affection for the book – and plenty of fear about how hard it would be to adapt – while Rashmi went in fresh. The result? A big, emotional, funny, visually inventive sci-fi movie that gave all three hosts a lot to talk about. ⸻ Like, comment, and subscribe if you enjoy spoiler-light movie conversations with strong opinions, good humor, and the occasional tea-fueled tangent. Episode 591 – The Bride / Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair
2026/03/21
Moviewallas is on YouTube! Welcome back to Moviewallas, your weekly dose of film reviews, movie news, and general banter – in theatres, on streaming, or in the back of an airplane. This week, Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi tackle two very different kinds of cinematic reanimation: Maggie Gyllenhaal’s ambitious The Bride and Quentin Tarantino’s long-awaited Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. Snack check: Lunar New Year rice treats, German gummies, chocolate rolls, ginger jelly sweets, and a fresh round of tea power this episode. Sugar levels are high. Opinions are too. ⸻ Streaming Picks – “I Can’t Find Anything to Watch…” Eleanor the Great – Netflix Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut is a warm, funny, bittersweet character piece led by the wonderful June Squibb. A small film with a big heart. The Killer – Tubi Yazdi’s John Woo deep dive leads to this Hong Kong classic – stylish, influential, and a reminder that Tubi has some serious gems if you’re willing to dig. In Time – Tubi Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Murphy, and one of the great high-concept sci-fi premises of the 2010s. Yazdi also makes the case for Tubi as an underrated free streaming treasure chest. Nuremberg – Netflix Joe revisits this awards-season historical drama and highlights the performances of Rami Malek and Russell Crowe, along with the film’s fascinating take on the postwar trials. ⸻ The Bride Maggie Gyllenhaal reimagines the Frankenstein myth through a steampunk, gangster-inflected, fiercely stylized lens. With Jesse Buckley, Christian Bale, Annette Bening, and Penélope Cruz in the mix, this one gave the hosts a lot to wrestle with – from its bold visual ambition to the sheer amount it tries to do at once. A movie to admire, argue with, and maybe be a little baffled by. Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair Tarantino’s long-rumored unified cut of Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2 is finally here. The team discusses how the combined version plays, what’s changed, and whether seeing it as one four-hour experience makes it even better – or simply different. Either way, it’s a chance to revisit one of modern cinema’s great revenge sagas in all its blood-soaked glory. ⸻ Like, comment, and subscribe if you enjoy smart, spoiler-light film discussions with strong opinions, movie love, and occasional ginger-induced chaos. Episode 589 – “Wuthering Heights” / Pillion
2026/02/21
Moviewallas is on YouTube! Welcome back to Moviewallas, your weekly dose of film reviews, movie news, and general banter – in theatres, on streaming, or in the back of an airplane. This week, Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi tackle two wildly different cinematic experiences: the provocative indie Pillion and Emerald Fennell’s lush, divisive adaptation of Wuthering Heights. Snack check: Mango-chili dark chocolate straight from Mexico City sets the tone – bold, unexpected, and a little dangerous. Much like the films we’re reviewing. Streaming Picks – “I Can’t Find Anything to Watch…” Undercurrent (Ullozhukku) – Netflix A flood traps a grieving family in this intense Malayalam drama we first saw at IFFLA. Claustrophobic, emotionally charged, and unforgettable. Triangle of Sadness – Netflix (Feb 21) Ruben Östlund’s razor-sharp satire finally lands on Netflix. Gender politics, class warfare, and one dinner scene you’ll never forget. Bridgerton Season 4 (Part 1) – Netflix Lavish, romantic, and gloriously anachronistic. If you’re in the mood for swooning and scandal, Netflix has you covered. Pillion This one sparked serious conversation. A shy young man is pulled into the world of a dominant biker, and what unfolds is funny, uncomfortable, emotional, and surprisingly layered. Anchored by fearless performances from Harry Melling and Alexander Skarsgard, Pillion is bold filmmaking that refuses to play it safe. It’s not for everyone – but it’s undeniably memorable. “Wuthering Heights” (2026) Emerald Fennell brings maximalist style to Emily Brontë’s classic tale of destructive love. Starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, this adaptation leans heavily into mood, sensuality, and striking visuals. We debate whether the passion translates, whether the characters earn their tragedy, and whether style can carry a story this iconic.   Like, comment, and subscribe if you enjoy smart, spoiler-light film discussions with strong opinions and zero pretension. Episode 588 – Scarlet / The Moment
2026/02/20
Moviewallas is on YouTube! Welcome back to Moviewallas – your weekly dose of film reviews, movie news, and general banter (in theaters, on streaming, or in the back of an airplane). This week Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi are fueled by Costco mango cakes, working through a few new mic-setup quirks, and diving into two very different watches: Scarlet and The Moment. Plus, we’re back with “I Can’t Find Anything to Watch on Video On Demand” – three non-Netflix picks to rescue your queue. Snack check + production note Yazdi brings individually wrapped mango cakes (dangerously addictive), and Joe shares a quick update on the podcast audio setup as the team tweaks the new recording gear. Streaming Picks – • Just Like Heaven (Paramount+) – Rashmi revisits this warm, early-2000s comfort watch with Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo – “like a hug,” and it still holds up. • The Librarians (KPBS on YouTube) – Yazdi recommends this timely documentary about banned books and the librarians caught in the middle, including the very real threats some have faced.    • Banned Books and the Librarians Caught in …   • Die My Love (MUBI) – Joe champions Lynne Ramsay’s polarizing, visceral fever-dream starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson – a film that’s less about plot and more about impact. (Even if you don’t love it, the performances are the reason to watch.) Scarlet A new animated feature from Mamoru Hosoda (director of Mirai), Scarlet delivers absolutely stunning visuals – the kind you want to pause and frame – with a story that sparked debate. The group agrees the animation is breathtaking, but wrestles with pacing, mythology, and how well the emotional beats translate. If you love ambitious animation (and don’t mind a little chaos in the world-building), you’ll want to hear where everyone lands. The Moment A mockumentary-style satire set in the pop-music machine, The Moment wins the room with its humor, self-awareness, and industry-side-eye. Even coming in with mixed familiarity on Charli XCX, all three hosts get pulled into the absurdity – with major shout-outs for the comedic timing, the supporting cast, and how sharply it skewers the push-pull between “art” and “commerce.” This one surprised us, and we break down why it works even if you don’t know the pop world it’s playing in. Like, comment, and subscribe if you enjoy spoiler-light film talk with strong opinions, snack tangents, and the occasional tech gremlin. Episode 587 – Shelter / 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
2026/02/14
Moviewallas is on YouTube! This week on Moviewallas, Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi dive into survival, rivalry, obsession, and bone-crunching dystopia. From intimate indie drama to franchise horror spectacle, Episode 587 covers it all — plus a few streaming picks you won’t want to miss. Snack check: We kick off with Spanish olive-oil tortas (cookie-meets-cracker perfection) and some very questionable peanut-butter choices by Joe. Streaming Picks Heated Rivalry (HBO) – Yazdi brings the steamy Canadian hockey romance that somehow evolves from “wait, what is this?” into genuinely moving TV. He makes the case that the third (and especially the fifth) episode is elite-level television – if the sauciness doesn’t scare you off. Dhurandhar (Netflix) – Rashmi recommends this sprawling, hyper-violent underworld saga with a killer soundtrack and a serious macho streak. The group discusses its intensity, and why a 3.5-hour runtime may be best tackled across two nights. Skyscraper Live / Free Solo (Netflix) – Joe explains why the live Alex Honnold Taipei 101 climb is perhaps more stressful than enjoyable, then re-recommends the actual classic: Free Solo. This week’s Movies: Shelter A remote Scottish island, a rescue that changes everything, and Jason Statham in full lone-wolf mode. Shelter is exactly the kind of tense, brooding action-thriller premise that sounds like perfect weekend viewing – and it sparked a fun debate for us about what works, what doesn’t, and what we wish the movie leaned into more. If you like Statham, isolated settings, and movies that invite “wait… hang on” moments, you’ll want to hear where we landed. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple The rage-virus universe expands again – this time with a different directorial voice and a very specific kind of intensity. Only one of us saw The Bone Temple, which made for a great, spoiler-light breakdown: what the sequel is aiming for, how it shifts the tone from the previous film, and why it’s clearly going to be a big conversation-starter for fans of the franchise. If you’ve been following this series, the podcast chat is the safest way to decide if it’s your kind of entry. Plus: Oscar-season confusion (as always), travel colds that won’t quit, and the tease of an upcoming special on the 2025-2026 awards season and your annual “Muggies.” ⸻ Timestamps 00:00 – Start 04:27 – Streaming Picks 04:37 – Heated Rivalry 08:45 – Dhurandhar 13:58 – Skyscraper Live / Free Solo 18:15 – Shelter 29:33 – 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple #Moviewallas #MoviePodcast #Shelter #28YearsLater #BoneTemple #HeatedRivalry #Dhurandhar #FreeSolo #FilmReview #StreamingPicks #TooManyMoviesTooLittleTime
Episode 586 – Primate / Send Help / Mercy
2026/02/06
Moviewallas with Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi is back with a brand-new episode kicking off 2026 movie watching! This week, the crew dives into three 2026 releases: Primate – A claustrophobic, gory creature-thriller about a genetically altered chimp that goes on a murderous rampage inside a remote oceanfront home. Send Help (dir. Sam Raimi) – A wildly entertaining, darkly comic survival thriller starring Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien, where a stranded employee and her detestable boss must rely on each other after a plane crash. Mercy – A near-future sci-fi thriller about a detective who has 90 minutes to prove his innocence to an AI judge… and mostly fails to convince our hosts. Along the way, Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi talk late Happy New Years, recent travels, San Diego Film Critics Society awards overlap with the Oscars, snacks on camera, horror vs thriller, genre tropes, Sam Raimi’s legacy, Rachel McAdams’ incredible range, and why some great premises collapse in execution. Two solid recommendations, one big disappointment, and plenty of banter. If you love movies, this show is for you. Like Comment Subscribe Too many movies. Too little time.
Episode 585 – Ella McCay / The Housemaid
2026/01/01
Moviewallas Episode 585 Welcome back to Moviewallas — your weekly fix for smart, spoiler-free movie reviews and cinephile banter. In Episode 585, Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi return to a two-feature format, covering a buzzy new political dramedy from James L. Brooks and a genre-bending psychological thriller from Paul Feig. Along the way, they catch up on trailers, discuss new clip mics, and celebrate the San Diego Film Critics Society awards season. Full list of winners now live at https://www.sdfcs.org     Ella McCay Written and directed by James L. Brooks, Ella McCay is a 2025 political dramedy about a rising political star (Emma Mackey) navigating public scrutiny, personal relationships, and generational conflict in the run-up to an election. With an ensemble that includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Woody Harrelson, Jack Lowden, Ayo Edebiri, and Albert Brooks, the film blends wit, idealism, and emotional nuance — marking Brooks’ return to filmmaking after a 13-year hiatus. The Housemaid From Paul Feig comes an unexpected turn into psychological suspense. The Housemaid is a dark, stylized thriller set in a glossy Manhattan high-rise, where a seemingly docile domestic worker gradually upends the life of her wealthy employer. With echoes of Single White Female and Parasite, Feig’s latest blends social satire and tension into something uniquely disquieting.
