Dry times in January sees dams run dry 

As the livestock death-toll of this month's fires continues to be tallied, one farmer loses at least 6,000 sheep and returns home to not "a blade of grass left."

Over 40,000 livestock have now been been killed in fires across Victoria this month and the insurance bill is still being tallied. So far claims are estimated to have reached more than $200 million since the 7th of January.

Although it has been a devastating month for Harcourt alpaca shepherd, Rita Soares, she's been overwhelmed by the support she's received after fire ripped through her property earlier in the month.

One emergency warning and twelve watch and act messages in place across the state, as Victoria struggles through a severe heat wave and potentially record breaking temperatures.

Fire-affected communities on high alert ahead of extreme heat 

Temperatures could reach the low-forties in some parts of the state over the weekend as saleyards cancel or move livestock sales in an attempt to avoid the heat and some farmers scramble to finish off harvest in a season that has been disrupted by erratic weather and fires. Victoria's Emergency Management Commissioner, Tim Wiebusch, and addresses some of the concerns from CFA volunteers who are frustrated with outdated infrastructure.
