Legends of Halloween checks in to the Bates Motel for Alfred Hitchcock's classic 1960 horror film. Based on the 1959 novel by Robert Bloch, from a script by Joseph Stefano, this film was a bit of a departure for Hitchcock, who had become one of Hollywood's biggest directors. Just the year prior, Hitchcock released North by Northwest, "the Hitchcock picture to end all Hitchcock pictures," a multi-million-dollar budgeted, massive color production. This film, by contrast, was made for less than one million and shot in black-and-white by the crew of the television anthology series, Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Starring Janet Leigh, Anthony Perkins, Vera Miles, John Gavin, and Martin Balsam, the film divided critics at the time of release, but audiences were enthralled. The pic grossed over $50 million, and is now considered one of Hitchcock's best films and arguably one of the greatest horror films ever made. Legends of Halloween celebrates eight hundred episodes with the thirteenth. Friday the 13th, that is! Courtesy of Listener Matthew, we're recording a never-before-recorded review on Legends Podcast of the slasher film that set Jason Voorhees, that hockey-mask-wearing, machete-wielding, unstoppable killing machine, loose on the world. Well, kinda. We'll get there in a minute. With a cast of teens including a very young Kevin Bacon, something is amiss at Camp Crystal Lake, and before long their necks are getting slashed. But there is a twist here, even for those with passing familiarity with the franchise. Don't worry, we won't spoil it yet! Legends of Halloween rolls on with another Stephen King pick from Beef. In this 1990 psychological thriller, James Caan plays a bestselling writer who, following a car crash, finds himself in the care of an obsessed fan played by Kathy Bates. Directed by Rob Reiner, from a script by William Goldman, based on King's 1987 novel, the film proved to be a breakout role for Bates, who was up to this point unknown to movie audiences. Bates took home the Academy Award for Lead Actress - still, to this day, the only Oscar win for a Stephen King adaptation. And while it's basically a two-hander between Caan and Bates, the film also includes Richard Farnsworth, Frances Sternhagen, and Lauren Bacall in supporting roles. Legends of Halloween starts early this year with Rita's pick, a 2003 horror flick that remakes a 1971 hit. The film stars Crispin Glover as a misfit who befriends a colony of rats living in his basement, later using them to get revenge on those who have wronged him. Written and directed by The X-Files writer, producer, and director Glen Morgan, this darkly comic tale was based on the original film, which was in turn based on the 1968 novel Ratman's Notebooks by Stephen Gilbert. While the original was the 11th-highest-grossing release of its year and spawned a sequel, audiences smelled a rat with the remake, and it ended up as a box-office bomb. However, critics praised Glover's performance and the new one sold well on DVD, even winning a Golden Satellite award for Best DVD Extras. But does the remake really build a better mousetrap, or should it be exterminated? The year is 2027, and for the past two decades, humans have been unable to reproduce. The infertility crisis has brought the globe to the breaking point, with Britain now a totalitarian, anti-immigrant state. Clive Owen plays Theo, a depressed bureaucrat tasked by his insurgency leader ex, played by Julianne Moore, with escorting a woman out of the country. When the woman turns out to be pregnant, an existential threat emerges - one that risks the fate of the human race! Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, based on the novel by P.D. James, this 2006 film was a critical hit but flopped at the box office. Now, twenty years later, the film seems not only prescient, but ahead of its time. And nowhere does it look more cutting-edge than in its cinematography - courtesy of Emmanuel Lubezki - featuring immersive, extended shots of the action. However, time has been kind, and the film has been frequently cited as one of the best films of the century so far. Last week, we talked about Song Sung Blue, Neil Diamond, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This week, we've got another color, musical icon, and Midwestern city in mind: purple, Prince, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Yes, the Purple One himself makes his feature film debut in this 1984 Albert Magnoli-directed rock opera. By 1984, Prince had already established himself as one of pop music's most exciting and unpredictable stars, but this film, loosely based on his own life, transformed him into a cultural phenomenon. And then there's the Oscar-winning soundtrack, including "When Doves Cry," "Let's Go Crazy," and, of course, that title track. The combined successes made Prince only the third artist at the time, after The Beatles and Elvis Presley, to have a Number One album, film, and song in the same calendar year. In 2019, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation as a work of cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance. The music made the movie legendary, while Prince's charisma, fashion, and performances cemented his place in pop-culture history. For her 2025 release pick, Rita selected a film with loads of local Milwaukee flair. Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson play Mike and Claire Sardina, a real-life Neil Diamond tribute duo known as Lightning & Thunder. Documentary filmmaker Greg Kohs captured the couple's attempted comeback in a 2008 festival favorite, where Hustle & Flow director Craig Brewer first encountered their story. Brewer spent years trying to turn this small-scale Midwestern saga into a big-screen musical drama about love, loss, and the extraordinary dreams of ordinary performers. Released on Christmas Day, the film arrived with a marketing campaign that included Jackman and Hudson performing Neil Diamond songs live at Radio City Music Hall. The film played well and scored multiple award nods for Hudson, but will this musical biopic make a beautiful noise, or leave us singing the blues? From the depths of his birth year - 1980 - Beef brings us a tale of horror and suspense based on Stephen King's classic novel. Yes, for the second month in a row, Beef picked a movie based on a story by Stephen King. Redrum! Redrum! Redrum! Yes, it is that movie, the one directed by Stanley Kubrick and all-but disowned by King himself. Starring Jack Nicholson as Jack, a struggling writer who takes a winter gig at a mountain hotel… Seriously, the first red flag here is that a resort in Colorado can't find a way to make it "economically viable" to stay open during ski season. Who runs this place? In tow are Jack's wife, played by Shelley Duvall, and their precognitive son, Danny. Hijinks ensue when the place turns out to be haunted, driving everyone insane just as a snowstorm cuts them off from the outside world. In 1980, critical reviews were lukewarm at best, accusations of on-set cruelty swirled like snowflakes, and its bestselling author's own chilly response to the adaptation tarnished the film's release. However, time has since been kind, and the film has been critically reassessed and is now listed as one of the greatest horror films ever made. Aug-Heist comes to a close with this 1995 Michael Mann film starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, sharing screen time for the first time in their careers. Mann already made this movie once, in 1989 as a made-for-TV movie called L.A. Takedown. In this iteration, De Niro plays the leader of a sophisticated band of thieves while Pacino plays the hardboiled detective obsessed with taking them down. The film features an all-star ensemble including Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Ashley Judd, Amy Brenneman, Diane Venora, Wes Studi, Dennis Haysbert, Jon Voight, and a young Natalie Portman. Critics praised the film, yet it opened behind family-friendly fare like Jumanji and Toy Story. Retrospective reviews have named it one of the most influential crime films of all time, inspiring works as diverse as The Dark Knight and Grand Theft Auto, there is a sequel/prequel, Heat 2, is due out next year. Our first-ever Aug-Heist pick, 1973's The Sting, saw Paul Newman and Robert Redford re-team with director George Roy Hill for a Depression-era crime caper. Now, we're reviewing the 1969 film that brought the three of them back together for the first time. The film, from a script by legendary writer William Goldman, is loosely based on the real-life Wild West outlaws Robert LeRoy Parker (Newman), and his partner Harry Longabaugh, (Redford), who in 1888 are on the lam after a string of train robberies. The film also stars Katherine Ross as Etta Place, Ted Cassidy as Harvey Logan, and features a soundtrack by Burt Bacharach. While audiences didn't storm the theaters to see it on first release, retrospective reviews have been favorable and the film did win four Oscars. In 2006, the Writers Guild of America ranked Goldman's screenplay 11th on its list of the 101 Greatest Screenplays ever written. In 2021, I, Tonya and future Supergirl director Craig Gillespie unleashed the live-action origin story of Disney's 101 Dalmatians baddie Cruella De Vil. Emma Stone dons the iconic black-and-white wig as the dognapping fashionista, here an orphaned up-and-coming designer in '70s punk rock London who also does crime. Emma Thompson plays her foil, the Baroness, an established couturière, in the story by The Devil Wears Prada screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna. With her little dog, too, comes an ensemble cast including Mark Strong, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, John McCrea, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste. Released in the dog days of the Covid-19 pandemic, the flick floundered at the box office while getting a simultaneous PVOD release for stay-at-home viewing, but still managed to fleece audiences for $233 million. However, it did go on to appropriately earn an Oscar for Best Costume Design for Jenny Beavan, and was also spotted among the nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. This week takes us to Maine's Shawshank Prison for a 1994 film directed by Frank Darabont based on a Stephen King novella. When Andy Dufresne is locked up for a crime he claims to be innocent of, he'll go to extraordinary lengths to survive, including ripping off the crooked warden and planning an elaborate escape. With an ensemble cast including Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton, William Sadler, Clancy Brown, Gil Bellows, and James Whitmore, the film bombed at the box office upon initial release. However, the film scored strong reviews and seven Oscar nominations, and with word-of-mouth finally catching up, it went on to become the top-rented film of 1995. The film began airing regularly on the cable network TNT, turning it into something of a pop culture phenomenon. Today, the film frequently appears on lists of the best films ever made - a true example of a film that was sentenced to cinematic obscurity but escaped and stole the hearts of its audience. This week, we're visiting L.A. for a 1988 film that takes place almost entirely in one night, in one neighborhood, along Wilshire Boulevard. When a jazz trombonist meets a diner waitress at a museum, sparks fly - up until he gets a phone call telling him the end is nigh! With nukes about to fall, he will risk it all to get the girl and get out alive! Starring Brat Pack-adjacent faces Anthony Edwards and Mare Winningham (who got hitched in real life in 2021!) along with a cast of cameos, this apocalyptic romance features a synth-drenched score by Tangerine Dream and on-location shooting for immersive effect. Written by Steve De Jarnatt just out of film school in 1978, the script went unproduced for a decade and was almost the basis for 1983's Twilight Zone: The Movie. De Jarnatt ended up buying the rights back to direct it himself. The gamble didn't quite pay off - the late '80s Cold War thaw also chilled audience demand for nuclear thrillers - and the film ended up bombing at the box office. Still, it lives on as a cult classic, and Listener Chris selected it for us this week. Released in 1976 from a script by the great playwright Neil Simon, this "whodunnit?" stars a veritable "who's who?" of screen royalty, including Peter Sellers, David Niven, Maggie Smith, James Coco, Peter Falk, Eileen Brennan, Elsa Lanchester, Truman Capote, Nancy Walker, James Cromwell, and Alec Guinness. When a group of guests are invited to a remote country mansion, they are challenged to solve an impossible crime… and to the discerning viewer, the guests seem awfully familiar: they're send-ups of some of the greatest detectives ever to grace page and screen, including Charlie Chan, Nick and Nora Charles, Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, and Sam Spade. This week, we're eating out with a 1989 cult film from director, writer, and visual artist Peter Greenaway. The film centers on a cook, Richard, played by Richard Bohringer; a thief, mobster Albert, played by Michael Gambon; his wife, Georgina, played by Helen Mirren; and her lover, Michael, played by Alan Howard. Through a series of dinners at Richard's fancy London restaurant, Le Hollandais, which Albert owns, the lavish meals devolve into debauchery, while Georgina and Michael's affair evolves into a plot of lust, murder, and revenge. Filmed on massive, color-coded sets and featuring costumes by Jean-Paul Gaultier and food by Italian chef Giorgio Locatelli, this crime-drama art film was released unrated by the MPAA for nudity and violence. Despite a limited run and current unavailability, the film has earned critical acclaim over the decades, as its indulgent brutality and formalist cinematography appear timeless.
