The Controversy Surrounding Flock Cameras
2026/09/10
Flock Safety's automated license plate reader cameras record vehicle details, license plates, bumper stickers and physical marks. The information goes into a centralized, searchable database used by law enforcement. Those in favor of the cameras say they help in solving crimes and finding missing people. Those who oppose the technology say allows for surveillance of citizens without a warrant. We talk about the controversy surrounding Flock cameras, including the heavy concentration of such tools in Black and poor neighborhoods.

For more than 100 years, The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) has followed its mission to promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information to the global community about Black life, history and culture to the global community. Race and Police Stops
2026/08/20
Do you know your rights when stopped by a police officer? Can you lawfully walk away if the police officer does not have reasonable suspicion of a crime? We find out why the United States Supreme Court let stand a lower court ruling that Black Americans often experience disproportionate police violence, creating a reasonable perception that they are not free to just walk away from police - and we talk about the impact of this decision on the Black community.

AV History Lesson: The historic Cape Charles Elementary, a Washington–Rosenwald School
2026/08/06
Another View went live from the historic Cape Charles Elementary School! Affectionately called "the school over the hump" by students because it is located just beyond a former railroad bridge, the school opened in 1929 to educate Black children in segregated Cape Charles. It was one of 5,000 Rosenwald Schools created through the partnership of education leader Booker T. Washington and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald. The school closed in 1966, and the building was used as a seafood processing plant until the late 1970s. For decades it sat dormant, but today it has been revitalized to once again serve the community. We hear from former students and learn more about the history of this historic landmark on Virginia's Eastern Shore.

National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month — the time when we pay particular attention to the mental health challenges experienced by Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) in this country. This year's theme is "More Good Days, Together". Generational trauma; financial and food insecurity; language barriers; discrimination; access to healthcare and cultural stigma are all contributors to the lived experience of minority groups and can influence whether a person receives the mental health care they need. We talk with leaders of the National Alliance of Mental Health Coastal Virginia about programs they provide to help individuals and families find to care so that they can have "more good days together".
