08 How to Choose Church Leaders You Can Trust (1 Timothy 3:1-13)
2026/10/21
Paul’s qualifications for church leaders are not primarily about titles, offices, or organizational charts. They are about character. In 1 Timothy 3:1–13, Paul describes mature believers whose lives have already demonstrated that they can be trusted with authority, both by the church and by those outside it.
In this week’s episode, we explore:
Why 1 Timothy 3 may be describing the character of church leaders rather than establishing a fixed institutional structureWhat the terms overseer, deacon, elder, and steward reveal about the nature of Christian leadershipWhy being “above reproach” serves as the central qualification for those who leadWhy church leaders must be respected both by believers and by those outside the churchHow Paul’s instructions concerning women in verse 11 contribute to the ongoing discussion about women and church leadershipWhy authority should grow out of proven character and willing trust rather than simply come with a titleHow churches today can recognize people who are already serving faithfully before giving them formal responsibilityBy the end of the episode, you’ll have a clearer framework for thinking about leadership in the church and the kind of character that should accompany spiritual authority.

07 Does Paul Forbid Women from Teaching Men? (1 Timothy 2:9-15)
2026/10/14
1 Timothy 2:9–15 is often read as a straightforward prohibition against women teaching or exercising authority over men. This episode presents a carefully considered minority interpretation: Paul is addressing husbands and wives within a larger discussion about godliness, authority, self-control, and trust in God, not setting universal rules for women in church leadership.
In this week’s episode, we explore:
Why the setting of 1 Timothy 2 may not be public worshipHow the themes of quietness, self-control, and a good conscience connect the entire chapterWhether the Greek words translated “man” and “woman” may mean “husband” and “wife”What Paul means by teaching or exercising authority in 1 Timothy 2:12How Adam and Eve illustrate headship, responsibility, deception, and disobedienceWhy “saved through childbearing” points to the promised MessiahHow believers can disagree with authority without anger, manipulation, resentment, or rebellionWhy this interpretation changes the central question from whether women may teach in church to how all believers should speak with humility, wisdom, and trust in GodAfter listening, you will better understand the interpretive choices behind this difficult passage and why sincere readers reach different conclusions. You will also be encouraged to examine the context carefully, hold your conclusions with humility, and consider what it means to offer wise counsel while trusting God when the final decision does not go your way.

06 The Debate over Women Teaching in Church (1 Timothy 2:9-15)
2026/10/07
How should Christians understand one of the New Testament’s most debated passages about women, teaching, and authority in the church? In this episode, Krisan Marotta introduces the major interpretations of 1 Timothy 2:9–15 and explains why thoughtful, Bible-believing Christians can reach different conclusions while sharing the same commitment to Scripture.
In this week’s episode, we explore:
Why both complementarians and egalitarians affirm the equal dignity and value of men and womenThe difference between hard complementarian, soft complementarian, and egalitarian viewsHow each position understands Paul’s appeal to Adam and EveThe debate over the Greek word translated “exercise authority”Alternative interpretations proposed by N. T. Wright and Jack CrabtreeHow to hold a biblical position with conviction, fairness, and humilityAfter listening, you’ll have a clearer framework for understanding the central arguments surrounding 1 Timothy 2:9–15. You’ll also be encouraged to examine the biblical evidence carefully, represent opposing views honestly, and allow Scripture to share your conclusions.

05 How to Replace Political Anger With Godly Prayer
2026/09/30
How should Christians respond when political leaders, officials, or other authority figures make life harder? In 1 Timothy 2:1–8, Paul calls believers to replace anger and resentment with prayer, especially prayer for the salvation of those they may distrust, oppose, or even feel oppressed by.
In this week’s episode, we explore:
Why Paul urges believers to pray for all people, including kings and those in positions of authorityHow prayer for difficult leaders reveals whether we are trusting God or quietly seethingWhat Paul means by living a “peaceful and quiet life”How godliness, a good conscience, and self-control shape our response to authorityWhy God’s desire for people to be saved should influence our own desiresWhat it means that there is one God and one mediator, Jesus Christ Why “lifting holy hands” is less about physical posture and more about the condition of the heartHow the gospel places rulers and ordinary people on equal ground before GodWhy Paul’s focus is not political strategy, but the inward spirit that should mark a believerAfter listening, you’ll better understand how 1 Timothy 2:1–8 connects prayer, authority, salvation, and godliness. You’ll also be challenged to examine whether anger or trust is shaping your response to difficult people and to consider how praying for their salvation can become evidence of a heart transformed by the gospel.

04 Why No One is Beyond God’s Mercy (1 Timothy 1:12-20)
2026/09/23
Before he was an apostle, Paul had believers put to death. He was so notorious that when God sent a man named Ananias to help him, Ananias begged to be sent anywhere else. In 1 Timothy 1:12-20, Paul looks back at that history and draws a surprising conclusion: God didn't show him mercy in spite of how far gone he was. He showed him mercy because of it, so that no one, in any generation, could look at their own past and conclude they were too far gone too.
In this week's episode, we explore:
What Paul means when he thanks Jesus for "judging him faithful," and why that phrase isn't about Paul's worthiness at allWhy Paul's ignorance didn't excuse him, and why he brings it up anywayWhat it means that Paul calls himself the "foremost of sinners," and why that's less about being the worst human ever and more about being the most notoriousHow Paul's own story is meant to work as proof that no one is beyond the reach of God's mercyWhat it means to "fight the good fight" of holding onto faith and a good conscience, and the everyday temptations that make that a real fightWhy Paul says he "handed over" two men to Satan, and why that was an act of honesty, not crueltyAfter listening, you'll understand why Paul's worst chapter became the foundation for one of the clearest statements of grace in the New Testament. If you've ever wondered whether you've done too much wrong to be forgiven, or you're in the daily fight to hold onto your own faith and a clear conscience, this episode will show you that the same mercy that reached Paul is still reaching people today, including you.

03 How to Recognize Sound Bible Teaching (1 Timothy 1:5-11)
2026/09/16
Not every confident Bible teacher is leading you toward the truth. In Ephesus, some teachers sounded impressive, quoted the Law with authority, and drew a following. But Paul says they were doing real damage, because they didn't understand what they were talking about. This episode walks through 1 Timothy 1:5-11 to uncover the real test Paul gives Timothy for spotting sound Bible teaching, and it isn't about how the message is delivered.
In this week's episode, we explore:
Why Paul says the goal of all good Bible teaching is love, and why that's a much higher bar than simply sounding rightWhat a "pure heart," "good conscience," and "sincere faith" mean in Paul's original contextHow to recognize "vain discussion," the kind of teaching that sounds spiritual but says nothing you can actually pin downWhy Paul insists the law was given to sinners, not to the already righteous, and how that single idea corrects a very common way of misreading ScriptureWhat it means to use Scripture as a mirror instead of a checklistAfter listening, you'll walk away with a clear, practical way to evaluate any Bible teaching you encounter, whether it's a Sunday sermon, a podcast, or a book. You'll understand why Paul cared far more about substance than style, and you'll be equipped to ask better questions of your own teachers, and of yourself, the next time Scripture is on the table.

02 Why God Chooses Faithful Over Impressive People (1 Timothy 1:1-4)
2026/09/09
Would you pick a quiet, unproven thirty-something to lead a church in crisis? Paul did. In 1 Timothy 1:1-4, he hands Timothy, a young pastor with no impressive pedigree and a hesitant personality, the task of confronting false teachers in one of the most spiritually chaotic cities in the ancient world. This episode explores why Paul trusted him anyway, and what that choice reveals about the kind of leader God actually looks for.
In this week's episode, we explore:
What it means that Paul calls himself an "apostle," and why that claim to authority matters for how we read this letterWhy Paul calls God "our Savior" and Jesus "our hope," and what that reveals about how the earliest believers understood rescue and mercyWhat Paul means by "myths and endless genealogies," and how a chain of borrowed authority can make a false teaching sound credibleWhy Jesus taught with a different kind of authority than the scribes, and what that means for how we study Scripture todayThe surprising list of reasons Timothy seemed unqualified to lead, and why none of them disqualified him in Paul's eyesWhat the story of God choosing David over his older, more impressive brothers teaches us about how God evaluates a leaderAfter listening, you'll understand what it means to have authority to teach and lead in the church, and you'll see that credentials, confidence, and charisma were never the real qualification. If you've ever felt too young, too quiet, or too ordinary for what God has put in front of you, this episode will give you a clearer picture of what God actually values in the people he calls.

01 Introduction to 1 Timothy
2026/09/02
Timothy has been left in Ephesus with an intimidating assignment: confront false teachers, restore order, and guide a divided community without Paul beside him. Why did Paul trust this relatively young leader with such a difficult task and what does their story reveal about the real purpose of 1 Timothy? In this episode, we meet the two men behind the letter and uncover the central question that will guide the entire series: What happens when the truth of the gospel begins to shape the way God’s people actually live together?
Before we can understand 1 Timothy, we need to understand why it was written. This opening session of our study introduces the two men behind the letter and explains the situation that made the letter necessary. What you find here will change the way you read every chapter that follows.
In this episode:
Why 1 Timothy belongs to a special category of Paul's letters called the pastoral epistles and what makes them different from his other lettersHow Paul went from being the church's most determined persecutor to its most tireless missionary, and what his conversion on the road to Damascus actually meantWho Timothy was before Paul found him, why Paul chose him, and how their decade-long partnership shaped Timothy into someone Paul could trust with a troubled churchWhy the church in Ephesus was in crisis and what Paul hoped one young leader could do about itThe two major themes that hold the entire letter together: godliness and the conduct of believers in the household of GodHow Paul organized his instructions to Timothy around five distinct charges, one at the end of each major section of the letterSeries: 1 Timothy: Fight the Good Fight
Wednesday in the Word Season 28: 1 Timothy
2026/08/19
For fifteen years, the Wednesday in the Word podcast has been exploring what the Bible means and how we know. Now, as we begin our 28th season, we’re turning to a letter that asks an urgent and surprisingly modern question: How should the truth of the gospel shape the way Christians live?
Season 28 on 1 Timothy starts September 2.
We’ll follow Paul’s argument verse by verse, paying close attention to the text, the historical setting, and how we know what Paul meant. Along the way, we’ll also face one of the most controversial and debated passages in the New Testament.
Whether you are new to the Bible or have studied it for many years, I hope you’ll join me for this season of Wednesday in the Word. Together, we’ll discover what 1 Timothy teaches about truth, character, leadership, community, and faith worth fighting for.

15 How to Pursue Holiness Without Living Under Law
2026/05/13
This episode closes the Start Strong series by asking a question many believers quietly carry: if we are no longer under the law, what keeps us from drifting back into sin? In Galatians 5:13–24, Paul’s message is both freeing and searching: true faith does not lead us to use freedom as an excuse for sin, but to become people who increasingly love what is good.
In this week’s episode, we explore:
Why Paul wrote to the Galatians and how he answers the claim that grace leads to moral collapse What Paul means by “the flesh” and why self-reliance can never produce true holiness How freedom from the law is not freedom to sin, but freedom to love and serve others Why a changed life does not earn salvation, but does testify to the reality of saving faith By the end of this episode, listeners will better understand why the Christian life is not sustained by fear, technique, or external pressure, but by God’s Spirit at work within us. It is an encouraging reminder that holiness grows not from trying harder in our own strength, but from trusting the God who changes broken people from the inside out.

14 Why Hope in God Won't Let You Down
2026/05/06
This episode explores why believers can have real confidence that their hope in God will not fail. In Romans 5:1–11, Krisan Marotta explains that salvation does not rest on the strength of our love for God, but instead on God's love for us.
In this week’s episode, we explore:
What it means to have peace with God Why biblical hope is not wishful thinking, but confident expectation What Paul means by “the hope of the glory of God” in Romans 5 Why believers can rejoice even in suffering How trials test faith, produce endurance, and strengthen assurance Why the cross proves that God will not abandon his people halfway How God’s love and the gift of the Holy Spirit guarantee that hope will not disappoint After listening, you’ll better understand why the Christian life is not sustained by your own strength, but by God’s faithful love. This episode offers comfort for anyone who fears falling short, showing that the God who reconciles sinners to himself is also the God who brings them safely home.

13 How The Holy Spirit Seals God's People
2026/04/29
This episode explores how the Holy Spirit gives believers real assurance that they belong to God. Looking closely at Ephesians 1:13–23, Krisan Marotta explains that the Spirit is not only the fulfillment of God’s promises, but also God’s seal of ownership and his guarantee that he will bring his people safely into their promised inheritance.
In this week’s episode, we explore:
What Paul means when he says believers are “sealed with the promised Holy Spirit” Why hearing and believing the gospel are central to receiving this assurance How Old Testament promises in Jeremiah and Joel help explain the Spirit’s role The threefold meaning of God’s seal: authenticity, ownership, and protection Why the Holy Spirit is described as a pledge or down payment of our inheritance How Paul’s prayer in Ephesians points believers toward wisdom, revelation, and lasting hope What it means to have the “eyes of your heart” enlightened to see the value of God’s promises After listening, you’ll have a clearer understanding of why the Christian’s confidence rests not in feelings, rituals, or circumstances, but in God’s own work through the Holy Spirit.

12 How to Choose the Right Treasure
2026/04/22
You can look faithful on the outside and still be building your life around the wrong treasure. In this epsidoe, Krisan Marotta walks through Matthew 6:19–24 and shows how Jesus exposes the false security of worldly wealth, approval, and success. The real issue is not simply money, but whatever we cling to for meaning, safety, and hope instead of trusting the promises of God.
In this week’s episode, we explore:
What Jesus means by “treasures on earth” and “treasures in heaven” Why earthly treasure always fails, while God’s promises endure How your treasure reveals where your heart truly is What it means for the eye to be “healthy” or “bad,” and how spiritual blindness distorts what we value Why serving both God and money is ultimately impossible How the Pharisees modeled outward religion while still chasing the rewards of this world What it looks like to entrust your future to God instead of building your life around what you cannot keep After reading, you’ll have a clearer picture of what Jesus is warning against in the Sermon on the Mount and why this warning matters for every believer. This post invites you to examine what you are really living for, to see the emptiness of temporary treasure, and to fix your hope on the one treasure you can never lose.

11 Why Work Matters More Than You Think
2026/04/15
Authority and submission often feel like problems to solve or power struggles to survive. In this episode, Krisan Marotta explores Colossians 3:18–4:1 and shows how Paul reframes those relationships through the gospel. Rather than asking how to protect ourselves or get our way, Paul calls us to live as people who belong to Christ, acting in every role with humility, responsibility, and trust in God.
In this week’s episode, we explore:
What it means to do everything “in the name of the Lord Jesus”How the gospel reshapes relationships involving authority and submissionPaul’s teaching for wives and husbands, and how responsibility differs from worthWhat children and parents are called to in a relationship shaped by love and wisdomHow Paul’s words to slaves and masters speak into the realities of work and leadership todayWhy every human role is ultimately accountable to the Lord ChristAfter listening, you’ll have a clearer framework for thinking about authority, submission, work, and responsibility in light of the gospel.

10 How Biblical Marriage Solves Your Need for Intimacy
2026/04/08
In this episode of Wednesday in the Word, Krisan Marotta returns to Genesis 2:15–25 to recover a biblical vision of marriage—not as a checklist of moral rules, but as God’s beautiful design for human intimacy and flourishing. By watching how God creates Adam and Eve, Krisan shows why marriage is God’s wise provision for a need we were made to have: the need to know and be known in a uniquely human relationship.
In this week’s episode, we explore:
Why God says it is “not good” for Adam to be alone—even before sin enters the worldWhat it means for Eve to be a “helper fit for him”: truly corresponding, matched, and humanHow Genesis presents marriage as God’s gift and design, not a human invention we can redefineThe three foundational commitments of marriage in Genesis 2:24: leaving, holding fast, and becoming one fleshHow “specialness,” “permanence,” and shared life reshape everyday tensions—including chores, priorities, and conflictWhy the Bible frames sexuality as an expression of covenant faithfulness: chastity before marriage and fidelity afterAfter listening, you’ll come away with a clearer, more compelling picture of what marriage is meant to be: a covenant where two people reorder life around one another, stay committed through hardship, and learn to live as “we” instead of “me.” Most of all, you’ll be invited to see God’s design not as restrictive, but as the path toward the intimacy and security our hearts were made to seek.
