Today’s podcast is an interview I did with Inger Rankins during the 2018 Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend Washington. Inger is originally from Norway, and as a youth was regularly rowing the families wooden clinker workboats to and from the island her grandparents lived on. Inger learned to sew her own clothes at a young age, and in 1990 began applying those skills to marine canvas work. She has had her own marine canvas business since 1999 and enjoys the creativity of making sail covers, boat covers and other canvas boat parts. Inger and her husband Sean own and operate Northwest Sail and Canvas Makers. In this interview, Inger discusses her all night (20 hours straight) rowing in the inaugural Seventy48 human powered race from Tacoma to Port Townsend, WA in a PT Watercraft PT-11 rowing dinghy.

Doug is a boatbuilder, author, and researcher specializing in the construction of traditional Japanese wooden boats. Brooks has apprenticed with seven boatbuilders in Japan since 1996, building over a dozen types of traditional boats.

Bruce moved to Port Townsend in the mid 1970’s to check out the wooden boats and has become a part of the Port Townsend Wooden Boat renaissance and culture. He is a master spar maker and boat builder. In this interview, Tipton discusses how he got to Port Townsend and his work there for the last 40+ years.

Tiffany & Bruce spent 11 years sailing around the world on their 34ʹ Atkin designed gaff cutter Vixen. During the voyage they had 2 daughters (Solianna and Seffa Jane) and the time of their life. Today’s podcast is an interview I did with Simeon Baldwin and Dale Simonson during the 2017 Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend Washington. Simeon and Dale both own SCAMP micro sailboats. They entered the R2AK first leg in 2017 and had to call the Coast Guard and be rescued due to one crew approaching hypothermia, and also to the SCAMP taking on water (due to a leaking bilge seal). We discuss the entire adventure and the lessons they learned from this harrowing adventure.

He has built 2 beautiful pygmy kayaks and loves vintage motorhomes and Datsun 510s. We had a great conversation about all these topics!
