Beyond the Pink Ribbon: How Cancer Culture Is Turning Breast Cancer Awareness Into Action
2026/10/22
Beth Love, Co-Founder of Cancer Culture and stage IV metastatic breast cancer patient advocate joins eHealth Radio and the Cancer Information and Health News Channels. Listen to interview with host Eric Michaels & guest Beth Love discuss the following: Beth, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but Cancer Culture is encouraging people to think beyond pink ribbons and awareness campaigns. As someone living with Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, why is this message so important to you, and what do you want people to understand about metastatic breast cancer? You and Rachel Burns founded Cancer Culture in 2022, and your mission is deeply personal. Tell us about your own breast cancer journey, how the organization came to life and why you decided to focus specifically on funding research for metastatic breast cancer. Cancer Culture has raised more than $600,000 in the last year, and what is especially remarkable is that 100% of donations go directly toward research, without deductions for operating expenses. How have you been able to accomplish this, and why is funding curative-intent research so critical? Cancer Culture has found a unique way to combine fashion with fundraising. Your seventh annual New York Fashion Week Runway Experience featured breast cancer patients and survivors as models and raised an impressive $200,000 for research. What makes this event so powerful, and how are you continuing that momentum through your new Shaneli jewelry collaboration? For someone listening today who wants to make a meaningful difference, what can they do to support Cancer Culture and metastatic breast cancer research? And what gives you hope that we can one day change metastatic breast cancer from a terminal diagnosis into a manageable or curable disease? Beth Love is a mom, wife, artist, entrepreneur, and metastatic breast cancer patient advocate. Diagnosed de novo with Stage IV lobular breast cancer in 2014 at age 34, she was told there was no cure and given a two-year prognosis. Beth has spent more than a decade pushing for greater urgency, visibility, and investment in metastatic breast cancer research. She previously served as President of METAvivor, is a graduate of the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s Project LEAD program, has served as a patient reviewer for the Department of Defense CDMRP, and has represented the patient voice at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium and other national forums. She also created the award-winning #ThisIsMBC and #StopOutBC campaigns. In 2022, Beth co-founded Cancer Culture with Rachel Burns, building a patient-led organization focused on funding metastatic breast cancer research with curative intent. Her mission is laser focused, to move beyond awareness, put patients where decisions are made, fund research with urgency, and help create a future where metastatic breast cancer is no longer terminal. Dr. Claudia Chavez-Munoz, Surgeon-scientist, Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer of Conexeu Sciences joins eHealth Radio and the Cancer Information and Health News Channels. Today, we’ll discuss the need for new approaches to breast reconstruction and Conexeu’s B.R.E.A.S.T. platform, which uses regenerative medicine to support the body in rebuilding its own tissue. Listen to interview with host Eric Michaels & guest Dr. Claudia Chavez-Munoz discuss the following: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which also brings attention to breast health and the experiences of women who have undergone a mastectomy. Claudia, tell us about your background, your role at Conexeu Sciences, and what led you to the work you’re doing today. For someone hearing about this technology for the first time, how would you explain the 3D BREAST device and how it’s designed to work in simple terms? Women today have several options following a mastectomy. What did you see as the unmet need, and what is different about the approach you’re developing with 3D BREAST? Where is the 3D BREAST device in development today, and what comes next? The 3D BREAST device is one use of Conexeu’s larger CXU platform. What is the platform, and what are some of the other ways it could be used? In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Claudia Chavez-Munoz, surgeon-scientist and Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer of Conexeu Sciences, joins eHealth Radio to talk about what comes after mastectomy and the need for new approaches to breast reconstruction. Drawing on more than a decade of work, Dr. Chavez-Munoz discusses Conexeu’s B.R.E.A.S.T. platform and the idea behind it, using regenerative medicine to support the body in rebuilding its own tissue. She also shares what led her to this work, where the technology stands today, and how Conexeu is looking at tissue restoration beyond breast reconstruction. The Future of Peptide Medicine: Separating Science from Hype

Karthik Achari, Founder and Clinician at PepMD, a healthcare company advancing the safe and responsible use of peptide medicine through physician education, credentialing, and personalized patient care joins eHealth Radio and the Health News Channel. Listen to interview with host Eric Michaels & guest Karthik Achari discuss the following: Peptide medicine has become one of the fastest-growing areas in healthcare. What is driving this surge in interest, and what should patients understand before exploring peptide therapies? There's a lot of misinformation surrounding GLP-1 medications and peptides online. How can patients distinguish credible medical guidance from marketing hype? You've been a strong advocate for physician education and credentialing in peptide medicine. Why is provider training so important, and how does it improve patient outcomes? As FDA regulations continue to evolve, how do you see the future of peptide medicine changing over the next few years? For healthcare professionals who want to responsibly incorporate peptide therapies into their practice, what are the first steps they should take? Karthik Achari is a Clinician and Founder of PepMD, a private standards body developing the credentialing and trust infrastructure for peptide medicine, and the first to bring clinician credentialing, pharmacy recognition, and research site authorization under a single unified standard: The Standard for Peptide Medicine. A clinician by training, Achari attended Bradley University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice / Family Nurse Practitioner program and built his perspective on healthcare by working with providers across the peptide space and by operating healthcare businesses. This dual experience has given him a comprehensive understanding of how the system functions in practice, where standards exist, where they fall short, and where critical gaps remain. In 2026, Achari founded PepMD to address the rapid growth of peptide medicine without the infrastructure needed to support it. Modeled in part after established bodies like The Joint Commission and PCAB, PepMD credentials clinicians, recognizes pharmacies, and authorizes research sites under one standard. His work focuses on bringing structure, credibility, and oversight to an evolving sector that has outpaced traditional regulatory frameworks. Stella Furlong, MA, and debut author of “Why Me and other frequently asked questions”, a Memoir and Self-Help Hybrid again joins eHealth Radio and the Health News and Mental Health Channels. She says, "I want to share my memoir and self-help hybrid with you. Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental disability. If I can beat that, you can beat anything in your life." Listen to interview with host Eric Michaels & guest Stella Furlong discuss the following: Can you explain why you chose the title of your book: Why Me and other frequently asked questions? Tell us about your background. I am sure that would help connect the dots there. Who is your target audience? Tell us about your co-author. Tell us about what led to your transformation later in life. Feedback on the book has been incredible. People from all walks of life have opened up and confided in me about their problems, their family and friends. I have become an ambassador for mental health. It's not a heavy read. I aim to inspire and entertain. Its funny. More Ruby Wax OBE, author, actress, comedian and broadcaster who has depression and Sir Stephen Fry, author, actor, director comedian, broadcaster and quiz show host who has bipolar disorder. My role models. It is preventative. I warn you of possible triggers to avoid. Things that can press your buttons. We are vulnerable when we have had an episode. We are weak and need to build up our resilience. I show you tricks of the mind to put you in a more positive place and combat stigma. Meditation has worked wonders for me. Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it! My sister and I went on a Buddhist retreat in Derbyshire, UK a couple of years ago at the Tara International Kadampa Centre. The tide is turning in a time of global crisis in mental health. I am calling for a more holistic treatment of body, mind and spirit. Family and friends can be supportive. They can also be tactless. We are the black sheep. Sarcasm can wound us deeply. Drink and drugs are up there too, of course. I was in Pub Watch. Banned from local pubs for unruly behavior. I talk about Food for Mood. The importance of diet. I lost 63 lbs with Slimming World. I look and feel great. The prescription drugs turned me into a fat zombie with the classic shuffling gait. I got kidney damage from being put on an inaccurately monitored dose of lithium. The book traces the historic abuse of the mentally ill. Patients were treated badly by an authoritarian and sometimes cruel regime. We are still looking for answers to Why Me. In 100 AD a Roman poet, Juvenal spoke of the ideal: a healthy mind in a healthy body. We are still asking the question How? In 2026. The book is both timely and timeless. Timely in a global crisis. Timeless. The questions remain. I’ve just touched the surface. Buy the book and find out more. Dr. Alan Weiss, PhD, consultant, speaker, and author joins eHealth Radio and the Health News & Psychology Channels. His new book is The Courage of Your Talents: How to Build Your Self-esteem, Trust Your Own Judgment, and Constantly Succeed in Business (and Life). Listen to interview with host Eric Michaels & guest Dr. Alan Weiss discuss the following: High self-esteem is the one trait shared by nearly every great success — in business, sports, politics, and entertainment. What convinced you it's esteem, and not talent or luck, that's the real differentiator? You coined the term "courage of your talents." Tell us what it means and how it relates to self-esteem. You write that we need to entrench high self-esteem so that it's not situational. Describe how this works. Despite decades of self-help books and psychology, you argue we've actually regressed on self-esteem. What's driving that decline? You point to social media and "curated" comparison as major culprits. How is a scroll through Instagram undermining someone's self- esteem, before they've even started their day? Walk us through the "six courage creators." You start with accountability — why is owning your own problems the foundation of courage? You flatly reject the adage "the customer is always right." Why is that idea so corrosive to a professional's self-worth? You advise accepting only solicited feedback from people you trust — and ignoring the rest. That runs counter to all the "always be open to feedback" advice. Why? Two of your daily practices are the morning-and-evening "mantra" and the journal. Can you walk listeners through what you actually do? If a listener takes just one action after this conversation to build the courage of their talent, what should it be?  Alan Weiss, PhD, is a consultant, speaker, and author. Through his consulting firm, Summit Consulting Group, Inc., he has worked with more than 500 leading organizations, including Merck, Hewlett-Packard, GE, Mercedes-Benz, The Federal Reserve, and the New York Times Corporation. A sought-after speaker at major conferences, he’s also published more than 60 books, many of which have been on the curricula at top business schools. Dr. M. Zakir Sabry, a board-certified plastic surgeon and the founder of Murray Hill Plastic Surgery in New York City joins eHealth Radio and the Health News and Plastic Surgery Information Channels. With more than nine years of intensive surgical training, a craniofacial surgery fellowship, and over 1,000 aesthetic procedures performed, he is known throughout Manhattan for his conservative, patient-first philosophy and his commitment to natural, functional results. Listen to interview with host Eric Michaels & guest Dr. M. Zakir Sabry discuss the following: For someone unfamiliar with breast reduction, what does the procedure involve, and who tends to be the ideal candidate? Beyond the physical symptoms like back and neck pain, what other factors typically bring patients to your office seeking this surgery? Can you walk us through the recovery process and what patients should realistically expect in the weeks following surgery? How do you approach the conversation around size and shape — how do you help patients feel confident in the outcome before going into the OR? What are some common misconceptions patients have about breast reduction before they come in for a consultation? As a board-certified plastic surgeon and the founder of Murray Hill Plastic Surgery in New York City, Dr. M. Zakir Sabry has built his practice on a philosophy that puts honesty, integrity, and patient wellbeing above everything else. He will only perform procedures he genuinely believes will benefit the patient, and his approach to breast reduction combines deep anatomical expertise with a conservative, less-is-more philosophy to help women find real, lasting relief from the chronic pain, physical limitations, and emotional distress that come with disproportionately large breasts. In this episode, he walks us through what truly makes someone a candidate for breast reduction, how his unique tumescent sharp-dissection technique minimizes bleeding and speeds recovery, and why his drain-free approach results in significantly less discomfort than patients typically expect. Dr. Sabry will also tackle the questions he hears most often, including the right candidate for breast reduction, what recovery realistically looks like over time, and how he approaches sizing to achieve balance and proportion rather than a specific cup size. He’ll also share what sets his patient experience apart — from meeting personally with every patient a minimum of twice before surgery, to calling each patient himself the evening of their procedure. Whether you’ve been living with chronic neck and back pain for years or you’ve simply felt that your body has been out of proportion with your frame, this episode offers an honest, expert perspective on what breast reduction can achieve — and how Dr. Sabry guides every patient toward results that feel as good as they look. What are some everyday environmental exposures people may be overlooking, and what can they realistically do about them? Brothers Brandon Burrell, Founder and CEO, and Julius Burrell, Co-Founder of AForce Hydration joins eHealth Radio and the Health News Channel. The company brings together hydration products, a daily preparation ritual and AForce OS, a technology platform designed to help people prepare for the moments that matter. Listen to interview with host Eric Michaels & guests Brandon Burrell & Julius Burrell discuss the following: What inspired you and your brother to start AForce? What is one simple way people can make hydration part of their everyday routine? Your ritual is “Pause. Hydrate. Lock In. Perform.” What does that mean, and can you give us an everyday example? What is AForce OS, and how is it designed to help people prepare for a workout, a busy workday or another important moment? What is one simple habit listeners can start tonight to take better care of themselves and be more prepared for tomorrow? TIP: “Tonight, pick one moment you want to be ready for tomorrow: a workout, a presentation, a work shift or time with your family. Make preparation easier by putting your water bottle where you’ll see it, planning a meal and protecting time for sleep. Before that moment, pause, take a breath and choose one thing you want to do well. Afterward, ask yourself what helped and what you would change. You do not have to overhaul your life overnight. Start with one small habit you can repeat. Preparation begins before the pressure arrives.” Brandon Burrell, Founder and CEO, AForce Hydration, Inc. Brandon Burrell is an entrepreneur whose background spans finance, global hospitality, workforce operations and consumer businesses. Before founding AForce, he built Global Crew Services and launched Alkaline Fresh, bringing together his experience in international business and his interest in everyday wellness. The idea for AForce took shape during early morning walks on Fort Lauderdale Beach, where Brandon began thinking about the role hydration could play in how people prepare for their day. He shared that vision with his brother Julius, and together they began building the company. As Founder and CEO, Brandon leads AForce’s vision, strategy and business development. His goal is to make preparation a practical daily habit for people across different walks of life, from athletes and entrepreneurs to parents and professionals. Julius Burrell, Co-Founder, AForce Hydration, Inc. Julius Burrell is an entrepreneur and former collegiate baseball player at Jacksonville State University, with experience in fitness, international business and operations. His entrepreneurial background includes founding Amp Fitness and Echelon Security Group, where he developed his approach to leadership, discipline and building businesses. Tay-Sachs Awareness Month: Turning Personal Loss Into Action Through Genetic Screening

Shari Ungerleider, an Outreach and Education Manager for jscreen, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving lives through genetic screening and education joins eHealth Radio and the Health News Channel. Listen to interview with host Eric Michaels & guest Shari Ungerleider discuss the following: Shari, your connection to Tay-Sachs is deeply personal. Can you share Evan’s story and how his life ultimately led you to become an advocate for genetic screening and education? Many people think of Tay-Sachs primarily as a disease affecting people of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry. What should listeners understand about who can be a carrier and why screening is important for people from many different backgrounds? One of jscreen’s messages during Tay-Sachs Awareness Month is that when you get screened matters. Why is it beneficial for individuals and couples to consider reproductive carrier screening before pregnancy? Genetic testing has changed significantly since Evan was born more than 30 years ago. How does jscreen’s comprehensive reproductive carrier screening work today, and what does it mean that you screen for more than 260 genetic conditions rather than focusing on Tay-Sachs alone? For someone listening today who is thinking about starting or growing a family, what is the most important thing you want them to take away from Tay-Sachs Awareness Month, and where can they go to learn more or get screened? Shari Ungerleider is an Outreach and Education Manager for jscreen, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving lives through genetic screening and education.  Shari, along with her husband Jeff and father Stanley Michelman founded the Evan Lee Ungerleider Foundation when her son was diagnosed with Tay-Sachs disease.  ELUF raises money for Tay-Sachs research as well as to support carrier screening. This foundation is part of the National Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases Association, New York Chapter, where Shari was a past president and served on the board for over 20 years.  Shari has four children, Evan (mentioned above), Justin, Leigh and Sydney.  She lives in Wayne, NJ with her family. As a result of Evan’s illness and to honor his memory, Shari became an advocate to educate and raise awareness about the importance of carrier screening coupled with genetic counseling. She has been working on this mission for over 25 years. C-Section Scar Revision as Part of a Mommy Makeover: How Dr. Caroline Szpalski Restores Confidence After Motherhood

Dr. Caroline Szpalski, a board-certified plastic surgeon and one of the tri-state area’s leading female plastic, cosmetic, and reconstructive surgeons, practicing in Glen Ridge, New Jersey again joins eHealth Radio and the Plastic Surgery Information Channel.  Fellowship-trained in microsurgery and complex reconstructive cases at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Dr. Szpalski brings a “less is more” philosophy to every procedure she performs, including her approach to C-section scar revision as part of a comprehensive mommy makeover. Drawing on her multicontinental upbringing and sophisticated European sensibility, she helps mothers restore their pre-pregnancy confidence with results that look natural, elegant, and authentically their own. Listen to interview with host Eric Michaels & guest Dr. Caroline Szpalski discuss the following: What are the biggest misconceptions women have about mommy makeovers or C-section scar revision when they come in for a consultation? or What exactly is a mommy makeover? How do you explain to patients that scar revision can be a meaningful part of a mommy makeover that addresses remaining pain or hernias, rather than just a cosmetic afterthought? What makes a C-section scar a good (or not-so-good) candidate for revision, and what factors help shape your surgical plan? How does your “less is more” philosophy guide the way you approach scar revision alongside procedures like a tummy tuck or liposuction in a mommy makeover? Beyond the physical result, how does addressing a C-section scar affect a patient’s confidence and sense of identity after having children? Dr. Caroline Szpalski is a board-certified plastic surgeon and the founder of her private practice in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, where she has built a reputation as one of the tri-state area’s leading female plastic, cosmetic, and reconstructive surgeons. Fellowship-trained in microsurgery and the most complex cases at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Dr. Szpalski combines meticulous surgical technique with a deeply personal understanding of her patients’ journeys as a surgeon, wife, and mother herself. Her signature “less is more” philosophy shapes every aspect of her practice, guiding her toward results that are subtle, natural, and never overdone. In this episode, she discusses why C-section scars often go overlooked in post-pregnancy body concerns, and how she incorporates scar revision into a mommy makeover to create a complete and cohesive outcome for her patients. Dr. Szpalski will also address the questions she hears most often from patients, including when a C-section scar is a good candidate for revision, how scar tissue quality and placement influence her surgical approach, and how she sequences scar revision alongside tummy tucks, liposuction, and other body contouring procedures to achieve balanced, harmonious results. Drawing on her multicultural upbringing and belief that beauty has no single standard, she brings a thoughtful, individualized approach to every mommy makeover consultation. Whether a patient is self-conscious about a raised or discolored scar, dealing with lingering discomfort, or simply feels her midsection no longer reflects who she is after childbirth, this episode offers an honest, reassuring look at how thoughtful scar revision can help mothers feel restored, confident, and fully like themselves again.
