Living the Gospel or Speaking It? Why We Need Both
2026/10/20
You don’t want to treat people like a sales pitch. But has your fear of being pushy kept you from talking about Jesus?
In Episode 5 of Apoluo, we ask whether “living out the gospel” has become a reason to never actually share it. We discuss what aggressive, numbers-driven evangelism gets wrong, why loving your neighbor matters, and why good deeds can’t communicate the whole message.
From conversations on college campuses to Jon’s experience in Seattle’s occupied protest zone, we explore what it looks like to show up, listen, love people, and speak about Jesus.
We know the approaches we want to avoid. Can we explain how we’re actually sharing the gospel?
Who's in Charge of the Missionary?
2026/09/29
Who’s responsible for a missionary once they’re on the field? The sending church, the mission agency, or the local church taking shape around their work?
Jon, Andrew, Lauren, and Clark wrestle with that question in this episode of Apoluo. They talk about the need for support and accountability, what happens when too many people try to direct the work from afar, and why missionaries need room to listen to people who know the local context. The question gets harder when those closest to the work see things differently from the people back home. Who gets to make the call then?
Why the Mission Is Timeless
2026/09/11
Methods change, cultures shift, and technology moves fast. So why does the Christian mission never age out? In this episode, Jon, Andrew, Lauren, and Clark ask what makes the gospel timeless, and the answer has less to do with strategy than most of us assume.
Along the way, they ask why every generation feels the need to "reframe" the gospel, what "good news" meant to a first-century Roman ear, which symbol the early church chose before the cross, and how a century of missionary work collapsed because the message got tangled up with a flag.

What Counts as "Reached"? Rethinking People Groups
2026/08/18
What do we actually mean when we talk about "reaching the world"? In this episode, Jon, Andrew, Lauren, and Clark dig into one of the most influential — and most debated — ideas in modern missions: the people group. Where did the concept come from, and is it clarifying the mission or complicating it?
They wrestle with the questions hiding underneath the missiological jargon: Who decides what counts as a people group? Why is 2% the threshold for "reached"? Along the way, they explore Ralph Winter's idea of "gospel flow," the danger of importing American business models into missions, the difference between studying a people and actually telling them the good news, and why contextualization isn't a dirty word — it's how Jesus talked to Nicodemus one way and the woman at the well another.
The gospel doesn't need an upgrade. It needs messengers. Maybe reaching the world isn't as complicated as we've made it.

Back to the Heart of Missions
2026/07/21
What if the Christian mission is simpler than we've made it? In this debut episode of Apoluo, Jon Beazley sits down with co-hosts Andrew Bunnell, Lauren Lavender, and Clark Berryman to ask why the modern missions world feels so noisy — endless strategies, frameworks, cultural analyses, and "ologies" — while the actual work of proclaiming the gospel gets crowded out. Drawing from Acts, Paul's church-planting journeys, Roland Allen's classic Missionary Methods: St. Paul's or Ours?, and Tom Holland's Dominion, the team explores mission drift, the niche-people-group model, and what it looks like to recover the blessed simplicity of pray, meet people, and tell them about Jesus. Because the gospel doesn't need an upgrade — it needs messengers.
