Matt, Talor, and DT are back with the top photography news and the hot takes real photographers are actually arguing about in the field. This week: a photographer arrested for taking a chainsaw to a tree to get a better train photo, Adobe's new Open Eyes tool in Lightroom Mobile that generates eyes for closed-eye portraits, and the numbers behind the film photography resurgence. Then the hot takes: Lightroom vs. Bridge, watermarks on social media, and why anyone shoots JPEG and RAW. Talor closes with a concession confession on AI authentication. Talor survives a Pakistan trekking trip gone sideways (lost luggage, disintegrating boots, and two stolen bags of candy) before DT and Matt dig into Getty Images filing for bankruptcy, Apple’s new sensor-level authenticity tech, and a “Made in USA” drone pitched as a DJI alternative. Then three hot takes: limited edition prints, gatekeeping accusations, and back button focus, plus a revisit of last episode’s “sky is not the subject” take after 150+ comments rolled in. NEWS TOPICS Matt breaks down Getty Images’ prepackaged Chapter 11 filing and $533 million restructuring deal with the Getty family and Koch Equity Development, and what it actually means (and doesn’t mean) for contributors still owed royalties. Talor covers Apple’s new Reference Image feature, which cryptographically signs photos at the sensor level on the iPhone 18 Pro, and how it compares to the C2PA authentication standard most camera makers have been slow to roll out. DT found a “Made in USA” drone pitched as a DJI alternative and digs into whether the specs, and the patriotic marketing, actually hold up. HOT TAKES Limited edition prints make sense for physical mediums that degrade, but for digital files, the practice is mostly a pricing and marketing tool dressed up as scarcity. See Matt's Limited Edition Prints article. Declining to share an exact GPS location isn’t gatekeeping. Gatekeeping means blocking access entirely, and the information is out there for anyone willing to do the legwork. See Matt's Gatekeeping Article. Back button focus versus shutter-button focus comes down to personal workflow. Neither one is objectively better, but plenty of people switch mid-trip and end up with blurry images because they didn’t practice first. The crew revisits Talor’s “sky is never the subject” take from last episode after heavy listener pushback, holding the line while clarifying the carve outs for abstract and astro work. Matt and Talor are joined by guest host Wayne Suggs, filling in for DT, for a wide-ranging episode covering public lands policy, gear rumors, and three spicy hot takes on workshops, sky as subject, and crop mode. NEWS TOPICS Talor breaks down what's at stake in the USDA and Forest Service's proposal to rescind the 25 year old Roadless Rule, which protects 44.7 million acres of national forest from road construction and timber harvesting, and what it could mean for wildlife corridors, water quality, and public land access. Matt covers a wedding photographer whose $250 in Kodak Portra film, bought as backup stock on Amazon, turned out to be cartridges filled with rocks, and the online pile on that followed. Wayne asks whether DJI's ownership of Hasselblad and its drone imaging tech could eventually push the company into the full frame and crop sensor camera market, and what that would mean for Sony, Nikon, and Canon. HOT TAKES Bay Photo doesn't live up to its reputation as the internet's go to print lab, and boutique labs are worth a look instead. The sky is never the subject of a great photo. It's a supporting element, not the main event. Crop sensor mode on a full frame body trades away resolution and framing flexibility you can't get back later. A revisit of last episode's tripod stabilization take, with some nuance added for super telephoto and astro work. Matt, DT, and Talor kick off with a laugh-out-loud listener comment and DT's string of workshop mishaps in Ireland before diving into the news: the FCC's proposed ban on foreign-made drones and who actually benefits from it, how to evaluate photography competitions without getting scammed, and why AI's appetite for memory chips is driving up camera prices. Then the hot takes: why workshops should teach craft and vision instead of just delivering you to a pretty location, Canon's articulating screen and L-bracket problem, and why the old advice to turn off stabilization on a tripod might be outdated. We wrap up by revisiting last episode's Peak Design tripod take after some pushback from listeners. In this episode: FCC's proposed foreign drone ban and the national security case against it How to pick the right photography competition and avoid getting scammed (NLPA;) (Ocean Photography of the Year) Why AI demand is pushing camera and memory prices higher Why workshops should teach craft, vision, and voice, not just location Canon's L-bracket and articulating screen design flaw Why turning off stabilization on a tripod may be outdated advice Revisiting the Peak Design tripod hot take from last episode If you think you have what it takes to change our minds on one of this week's hot takes, send your rebuttals through our form at thetripodpodcast.com. Matt, DT, and Talor open episode two with the funniest listener reaction from episode one, courtesy of Gary Randall, before Matt recaps a backpacking trip into Colorado's Needle Mountains. From there the crew works through the news: VSCO's "The 50" billboard campaign and its vague compensation language, Canon's move to a fluorine-free, PFAS-free lens coating, and Nikon's surprise firmware updates for the aging D6 and D780. Hot takes cover why grad ND filters are obsolete in the age of luminosity masking, the rubber-feet-versus-spikes tripod debate, and whether photos need titles at all. They close by revisiting listener pushback on last episode's camera strap take. Talor recounts a shark diving trip off the Azores. DT follows with a tense encounter at Boulder Beach, South Africa, and what it taught him about situational awareness while traveling abroad. From there the crew turns to gear and industry: Sony's reported offer to acquire Tamron outright and what it could mean for the E-mount lens lineup, the resurgence of compact cameras among casual shooters, and federal drone enforcement stemming from World Cup airspace restrictions, including a Houston videographer now facing a felony charge for a two-minute flight near his own church. They close out with hot takes on camera straps, tripod-mounted bags, and whether L-brackets should be considered mandatory gear.
