Great Days, Great People | Ben Thomas Joins TWENNTY10 Weekly Pt1.
2026/10/26
What makes a truly great day in the shooting field? Is it the birds, the location, or the people you share it with?
This week on the TWENTY10 Weekly, we're delighted to welcome Ben Thomas, a passionate countryman from rural Suffolk, an experienced game shooter and the driving force behind a traditional local shooting syndicate.
With Jake recovering from a spell in hospital, Sam Turner and Avian Sandercock step behind the microphones to bring you another wonderful conversation celebrating the people, friendships and traditions that make the British countryside so special.
Ben has spent more than 15 years helping to keep his local shooting syndicate alive. As shoot captain and treasurer, he's the man behind the scenes organising work parties, gamebird deliveries, shoot days and everything in between.
But this week's Morning isn't just about running a shoot. It's about the shared experiences and countryside community that make it all worthwhile.
Drive One — Shoot Day RitualsEvery game shooter has their own little traditions, superstitions and routines.
Ben tells us where he'd take Sam and Avian to share a peg, before we explore his shoot-day rituals.
Does someone who's been running a shooting syndicate for so many years still get nervous before the first drive? And is it easier to relax when you're shooting somewhere else and somebody else is doing all the organising?
Drive Two — Gun Bus GossipThis week's Gun Bus Gossip is a particularly special one.
Jake shares a wonderful memory of his young son Toby being invited to shoot Ben's peg at the syndicate, where a memorable c**k pheasant created one of those moments that only a day in the countryside can offer.
It's a story that leads us into a much bigger conversation about community, friendship, rural traditions and the importance of introducing the next generation to fieldsports.
From local farmers and longstanding syndicate members to youngsters discovering shooting for the first time, we explore why small traditional shoots mean so much more than the number of birds in the bag.
And of course, Ben faces our six quick-fire questions — six cartridges, then swap!
Elevenses — What Are You Bringing? In true TWENTY10 fashion, everyone brings something to share.
But what's Ben bringing to elevenses?
Coming Up in Part TwoNext week, we get to know Ben a little better, exploring his rural Suffolk upbringing, the dedication involved in running a traditional shooting syndicate and his passion for hiking and mountaineering.
Then Ben gets to plan his dream TWENTY10 shoot day before making his very own entry into the TWENTY10 Game Book.

MORE THAN A GAME SHOT. MORE THAN A BUSINESSWOMAN. A PASSION FOR BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER.
Welcome back to the TWENTY10 Weekly as we head into the afternoon with Rachel Gisby, better known as The Shooting Badger.
In Part Two, we discover the woman behind the name, her journey into shooting, her remarkable achievements in catering and why she's so passionate about encouraging more women to experience everything fieldsports have to offer.
DRIVE THREE — RACHEL'S STORY
Where did it all begin?
Rachel takes us back to how she first discovered shooting, the people who introduced her to the sport and how that passion has become such an important part of her life.
We also discover the story behind Martha Hollis Event Catering, the successful Hampshire business Rachel runs alongside her husband Matt.
From weddings and private events to wonderful shoot-day hospitality, we hear about building the business, their achievements and Rachel's passion for great food, particularly the importance of field-to-fork.
But there's another subject close to Rachel's heart.
WOMEN IN FIELDSports — OPENING DOORS AND CREATING OPPORTUNITIES
We discuss Rachel's passion for encouraging women into shooting, building confidence, breaking down barriers and creating welcoming opportunities for the next generation.
Because nobody should feel that shooting is a world they cannot be part of.
DRIVE FOUR — RACHEL'S PERFECT TWENTY10 DAY
Twenty Guns. Ten pegs. Six shots and change.
The whole country is hers to choose from!
Where is Rachel taking the TWENTY10'ers for her dream day, and what makes it so special?
And finally, Rachel makes her own entry into the TWENTY10 Game Book, leaving us with something to remember long after the guns are put away.

Before we head out for another TWENTY10 Weekly, there's something incredibly important we need to talk about.

DEFRA is gathering evidence about gamebird management, rearing, release and shooting in England. This is our opportunity to demonstrate the dedication, conservation work and positive contributions that take place throughout the year.

Please don't leave it for somebody else.
Whether you're a Gun, gamekeeper, beater, picker-up or shoot host, take a few minutes to share your experiences and evidence.

A passionate game shot, competitive clay shot, wonderful host and someone who understands that the best days are about far more than the shooting itself.

In Part One — The Morning:
🎯 Drive One – The Ritual: We're heading to the clay ground! Rachel shares her competition-day rituals, preparation, nerves and how they compare with standing on a peg on a driven game day.

⚡ Six Quick-Fire Questions: Six questions, no hesitation, just Rachel's instinctive answers!

TWENTY10 — Great Days Shared.
Welcome anyone into shooting the way you would like to be welcomed. | Sam Turner Pt2
2026/10/05
In Part Two — the afternoon of Sam Turner’s TWENTY10 Weekly — we discover how Sam’s journey into game shooting began at just 14 years old, when a weekend job on a local farm led him into beating, shooting and ultimately a lifelong connection with the countryside.
Sam shares how those early experiences shaped his love of shooting and the people around it, and how that journey eventually led him to work with South West Sporting Simulated Game.
We also hear how Sam has helped bring simulated game shooting into weddings, giving couples and their wedding parties the chance to shoot clays together before the ceremony and create a truly memorable start to their day.
But one theme keeps coming through this conversation: community.
Sam talks about the people shooting has introduced him to, the knowledge shared with him, the friendships that have grown from it and why, for him, shooting has become about far more than simply pulling the trigger.
Finally, Sam makes his entry into the TWENTY10 Game Book:
“Welcome anyone into shooting the way you would like to be welcomed.”
A wonderfully simple message — and the perfect title for this episode.
DEFRA CALL FOR EVIDENCE — YOUR VOICE MATTERS
Defra is currently asking for evidence about gamebird rearing, release and shooting in England.
This is our opportunity to explain, in our own words, what shooting really contributes to the countryside and the communities within it.
Think about your own experience.
How many people does your shoot bring together?
Does it support a local pub, hotel, game dealer, farm, dog trainer, vet or other rural business?
Do you beat, pick up, load, keep, farm, shoot or help on work parties?
Does game from your day enter the food chain?
What habitat is managed or created?
Has shooting given you friendships, work, exercise, purpose or simply a stronger connection with the countryside?
Don’t just tell Defra that shooting matters. Show them what it actually does.
Use real examples, figures, photographs or records where you can, and only talk about the things you genuinely know and have experienced.
You do not have to complete every question in the full Defra survey. You can send your evidence directly by email.

Great Days, Great People | Sam Turner Joins TWENTY10 Weekly — Part 1: The Morning
This week on TWENTY10 Weekly, I’m joined by good friend Sam Turner as we head out for the Morning of his TWENTY10 day.
Across the first two drives, Sam takes us to places that mean something to him, shares the rituals that have become part of his days in the field, and talks about the people, experiences and traditions that make a great day memorable.
We also get into something that should sit at the heart of every day in the field — safety. Sam shares some genuinely valuable advice and reminds us why good habits, awareness and looking after the people around you matter far more than what ends up on the game cart.
Because TWENTY10 has always been about more than pulling the trigger.
Great days. Great people. Great Days Shared.
JOIN THE CONVERSATIONWe want you to become part of TWENTY10 Weekly.

Be Yourself. Be Humble. Be Inclusive. | Blair Balment — Part 2
We continue our conversation with Blair Balment for Part 2 of the very first TWENTY10 Weekly guest show.
This time, we dig a little deeper into Blair himself — his journey into shooting, the people and experiences that have shaped his time in the field, and what the sport means to him today.
We also put Blair through some of our TWENTY10 questions. If he could take a TWENTY10 team anywhere for a day in the field, where would he take us? And when the guns are away, the dogs are back in the truck and the day is over, what would Blair write in the game book?
At the heart of this conversation are three simple thoughts:
Be yourself. Be humble. Be inclusive.
They feel particularly fitting for TWENTY10 and everything we're trying to build around Great Days Shared.
As Blair is our first-ever TWENTY10 Weekly guest, we're doing something a little special. Rather than making you wait until next week, both Part 1 and Part 2 are available now — a special treat for listeners and viewers to enjoy the full conversation.

JOIN ME FOR THE MORNING & STICK AROUND FOR THE AFTERNOON AS WELL.
We have released both parts of our conversation for you all to enjoy.

We’ll also catch up on what’s happening around TWENTY10, what’s coming next and, of course, put Blair through our Countryside Conundrum.
