Why Are Scientists Keeping Deadly Bacteria Alive?
2026/10/09
Why are scientists keeping deadly bacteria alive—and what happens if something goes wrong? This week on Amazing Pop Culture, Dags and Mike dive into the disturbing questions surrounding plague research, reports out of Siberia, and why laboratories continue studying some of history's deadliest pathogens. Is preserving dangerous bacteria essential for scientific research, or are we creating risks we don't fully understand? And, as usual, the conversation takes a few unexpected turns. From artificial intelligence and the possibility of future outbreaks to bringing extinct species back to life, coconut water, Transformers, and plenty of pop culture rabbit holes, Dags and Mike explore the strange connections between science, technology, and everyday life. In this episode: Why scientists preserve and study deadly bacteria Plague research and reports from Siberia Could AI change how we handle future outbreaks? Should scientists bring extinct species back? Transformers, nostalgia, and unexpected detours The questions nobody seems to be asking What do you think? Are We Losing Control of AI, Phones & Algorithms? | Amazing Pop Culture
2026/09/23
AI is getting smarter, phones keep getting bigger, and somehow our attention spans keep getting shorter.
Dags and Mike start with a simple question: Is AI actually becoming dangerous, or are we just being scared into thinking it is?
That sends them down a rabbit hole involving stories of AI supposedly going rogue, the difference between AI and AGI, military AI, and whether machines could ever understand something like love—or eventually decide they don't need us.
Then the conversation takes a turn: Why do we keep buying new phones when they barely seem better than the old ones? Why can't we easily replace batteries anymore? Are Siri and Alexa always listening? And how much of modern technology is really about making our lives better versus keeping us locked into the next upgrade?
Then they get into TikTok, Shorts, clickbait, constantly changing thumbnails, streaming impatience, and the algorithms fighting to keep us watching for just a few more seconds.
Are we still deciding what we watch, buy, and pay attention to—or are algorithms increasingly making those decisions for us?

Minnesota State Fair: Is the Food Still Worth the Hype? | Amazing Pop Culture

Minnesota State Fair: Is the Food Still Worth the Hype? | Amazing Pop Culture
Dags and Mike Rez take on the Great Minnesota Get-Together — from waiting nearly an hour for an Amish donut to Pronto Pups, Sweet Martha’s cookies, mini donuts, giant hot dogs and Minnesota’s strange tradition of putting seemingly everything on a stick.
But, as usual, the conversation doesn’t stay in one place for long.
They look back at the Minnesota State Fair they remember — Ye Old Mill, the Giant Slide, the rodeo, racetrack and old Grandstand shows — and talk about how the fair has changed with more food, alcohol, permanent buildings and entertainment.
Then come the rabbit holes.
Is a Pronto Pup really different from a corn dog? Why will people stand in enormous lines for food? Are portions getting smaller while prices keep climbing? Why can a familiar food look exactly the same but somehow taste worse than it used to? And have we slowly gotten used to lower-quality and artificial ingredients?
Dags and Mike Rez also get into Bonnie Raitt at the Grandstand, concert ticket prices, fair parking, those massive attendance numbers, digital creators posing with their food, Domino’s Detroit-style pizza and the increasingly strange world of shrinkflation.
And somehow it all ends with cats, honey bees and yellow jackets.
It’s part Minnesota State Fair nostalgia, part food debate and part cultural rabbit hole — which is pretty much how conversations go around here.
Hosted by Dags with Mike Rez.

Would You Leave Earth for Mars? Robots, Nanobots & Our Wild Future
2026/09/09
What happens when science fiction starts becoming everyday life? Dags and Mike dive into a future of space colonies, humanoid robots, medical nanobots, AI, autonomous vehicles, and flying taxis—and ask just how much of it could actually become reality. Why are Elon Musk and other space pioneers so determined to make humanity multiplanetary? Would the Moon make more sense than Mars? Could future generations become space nomads, moving between worlds? And what happens when humanoid robots and microscopic machines become part of our everyday lives? The conversation also explores the risks of becoming increasingly dependent on technology, from self-driving vehicles to machines making more decisions for us. Then things come back down to Earth as the discussion shifts to changing youth culture, high school subcultures, 80s hair and fashion, road trips, gas station food, and the Americana nostalgia that reminds us just how dramatically everyday life has already changed. In this episode: * Elon Musk and the push to make humanity multiplanetary * Humanoid robots, Optimus, and humanoid robot competitions * Medical nanobots and their potential risks * Moon colonies vs. Mars colonies * The possibility of future space nomads * AI, autonomous vehicles, and flying taxis * How dependent we're becoming on technology * Changing generations and high school subcultures * 80s music, hair, and fashion nostalgia * Road trips, gas station food, and classic Americana 🚀 Would you actually leave Earth and live on another planet if you had the opportunity?
