The gospel is centered on Jesus Christ, who came to restore our relationship with God. Just as Jesus entered David's royal lineage through Joseph, we are adopted into God's family through Jesus Christ. This adoption reminds us that God intentionally chose us to become His children. The resurrection is the foundation of our Christian faith because it confirms that Jesus is not merely a good teacher or prophet but the promised Messiah and our Lord. Through Jesus, we also receive God's grace, which empowers us to fulfill our calling. In this except from this week's office hours, Pastor Amos and Michael open by noting how American elections keep flipping between parties, and Pastor Amos asks whether a single seven-year term (or five) would let leaders govern instead of campaign. Deborah likes the idea and adds a Jubilee-style debt reset, while Althea suggests dropping midterms and describes Jamaica's five-year terms. Deborah asks whether the Bible has elections, and Pastor Amos says no: God chose leaders, or the strongest army ruled. The group then weighs whether gridlock protects against one party holding all power, with Michael arguing that without righteous leadership, unchecked control goes too far, and Ark pointing to Russia's 27-plus years under one ruler. Althea warns that division now outlasts elections and that empires tend to implode, leaving no one to fill the gap if the U.S. does. Pastor Amos widens the point to Morehouse, where an outside threat hides deep internal division. Michael says selfishness makes disunity last until Christ returns, and Bose says Nigeria's ethnic and religious divides sharpen during elections. In Romans 1:1–2, Paul introduces himself as a servant of Jesus Christ, chosen by God and sent to preach the good news. His introduction reminds us that our calling comes from God, not ourselves, and challenges us to clearly communicate who we serve, what God has called us to do, and how we are called to serve others. Paul also explains that the gospel was promised long ago through God's prophets in the Holy Scriptures, showing that the Old Testament is foundational to the good news of Jesus Christ and cannot be separated from the New Testament. Just as God promised the coming of Jesus before it happened, He often makes promises to us before they come to pass. Our responsibility is to respond with faith, obedience, and a willingness to participate in what God has promised. Here's part 2 of this week's office hours.  Part 2 begins with Deborah explaining that Pastor Amos's recent teaching sent her into her own study. She still isn't persuaded that Jesus suffered in hell, because she finds no Scripture saying God's wrath continued after the cross. She also hears "It is finished" as the beginning of salvation, sanctification and glorification, and she asks what the purpose of that suffering would be. Pastor Amos explains that most of the church has held the traditional view that Jesus did not suffer in hell, while he grew up in Word of Faith teaching that he did. He says Scripture gives no details of what happened between Friday and Sunday, so every position involves inference. His case is substitution: Jesus took the sinner's place, and the full penalty for sin includes spiritual death, which he sees in Jesus' cry of abandonment on the cross and in the statement that God made him sin for us. Deborah answers that Jesus bore our sins but did not become sin, because that would compromise his holiness and sovereignty. She also thinks the abandonment happened on earth and that Scripture says God would not abandon his soul in Hades. Pastor Amos suggests that promise means God would not leave him there, and he assigns her homework: ask what about the idea troubles her, and what "becoming sin" says about Jesus being God. He notes that some people call God a child abuser for punishing his Son, which keeps them from receiving Jesus.  Sonja asks what difference any of this makes in daily life. Pastor Amos says the practical gain is gratitude from grasping the full weight of what Jesus bore, and that the idea can stir a defensive reaction, like hearing someone insult your mother. Bose adds that remembering what Christ endured makes any sacrifice we're asked to make feel small. Hope says Jesus became sin because he had a job to do, and that he suffered and defeated death, hell and the grave so he could understand and help us. Pastor Amos closes by saying that human minds are limited and that two things can be true at once, as when God turned from Adam yet clothed him. He says the goal of every Bible study is for each person to study it for themselves until they can say "that's right," not merely repeat what a pastor said. He values the wrestling and compares it to the early church's council over circumcision. The replay of office hours this week is broken up into two parts. In this part 1 Bose asks about a pastor who took a second wife. Pastor Amos says polygamy was God's permissive will rather than his prescriptive will, and that it was already fading by Jesus' time. He leans toward calling it a sin like adultery but wants more study before saying it sends someone to hell. He is clear that it disqualifies a pastor. He points to Jesus' "the two shall become one flesh" as one-and-one, and says Old Covenant rules such as not reducing a second wife's food rations protected vulnerable people. Ark adds that a man who defends multiple wives would likely reject multiple husbands. Hope objects that adultery in the Old Covenant looks one-sided. Pastor Amos agrees and explains that it worked like property rights. He adds that Jesus addressed both husbands and wives, and that divorcing a spouse to marry someone else is adultery in God's eyes. The conversation widens when Doyin asks about "test marriages." Pastor Amos compares it to Married at First Sight and says people miss the covenant nature of marriage. He contrasts an "I" marriage ("what can I get out of this") with a "we" covenant of serving each other. He argues that living out the biblical roles, such as wives submitting in everything and husbands loving like Christ and treating wives as the weaker vessel, takes someone truly rooted in the Word. Bose says believers should start from the Bible rather than from worldly equality. Micah calls selfishness the root problem, wants no-fault divorce ended, and likens the friction of marriage to sandpaper that smooths character with Christ at the center. Pastor Amos then notes that Jesus said not everyone should marry, and that trauma can make a God-centered marriage very hard. Deborah closes with cultural views on divorce, statistics on who files, the toll on children, and the lies she believes young women are told. She says only the Word of God closes the gap and that things may get worse before they get better. If Jesus bore the torment of hell, how do we make sense of His promise to the thief on the cross that they would be together in paradise that very day? There's a video circulating on social media of a pastor introducing his second wife. Most people picture hell as a place where demons torture the lost, but the Bible never describes it that way. So when we ask whether Jesus suffered in hell, the real question is whether he bore the wrath of God, not whether Satan got to him. If Jesus truly took our place, and died carrying the punishment that belongs to us, what did that cost him in the moments between his death and his resurrection? Delay does not mean failure, but it can crush your soul if you let it. Hope deferred makes the heart sick, and a sick heart loses joy and slides toward depression. Every vision takes years to clarify and includes pivots along the way. Abraham waited decades, through a move, a family separation, and a wife taken twice, before he held the child of promise. Paul learned to be content with much and with little. Contentment protects the joy that gives entrepreneurs their strength. Popular culture depicts Satan and demons as ruling hell and tormenting the unrighteous dead, but Scripture paints a different picture. Hell is a place of imprisonment and punishment for the unrighteous dead and fallen angels. Satan currently operates in the earthly realm, but at the end of the age, he will be judged and thrown into the Lake of Fire for eternal punishment.
