Buckeyes tackle NFL Combine | Hardwood heroics
2024/02/26
Your annual Ohio State convention won't have as many Buckeyes as once thought but the NFL Combine in Indianapolis this week will still feature several Scarlet and Gray stars. Much has been made of how many Buckeyes opted against entering the draft. Don't tell that to Marvin Harrison, Jr., Michael Hall, Jr., Cade Stover, Tommy Eichenberg, Steele Chambers, Miyan Williams, Matt Jones and Josh Proctor. Each will take their turn showing off for gathered brass. That includes Steve Helwagen. Our venerable scribe is headed to the 'Crossroads of America' for the talent show. And whaddya know, Steve joins us this a.m. We talk NFL Combine, Jake Diebler's coaching tenure and more before we responded to our vaunted viewer questions. Another day, another bad idea by college football | Styles' role for 2024?
2024/02/23
It appears as though college football is close to moving its early signing period up three weeks in December, which in our opinion does nothing to solve the problem. On today's show, Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle delve into that, talk about Sonny Styles' likely role for the 2024 season, what we think will happen with the quarterback depth chart in 2024 and much more. That is coming your way on the Friday 5ish. To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Crystal clear? | Hartline's typecasting | Jordon rules
2024/02/22
There's a buzz when it comes to Ohio State football. Offseason additions and retentions have confidence peaking in these parts. Rest on your laurels time? Hardly. Recruiting trail effort levels are spiking and that 'buzz' seems contagious. Who (else) will Ohio State land in the Class of 2025? Are there defensive linemen and running backs in particular we want you to know about? Absolutely. Do we have right guys here to let you know all about them?  You know we do. Bill Kurelic and Mark Porter are back with all the knowledge you can handle and more. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! Laurinaitis, Guerrieri make impressive impressions | The problem with the CFP's '5+7' format
2024/02/21
Ohio State's newest defensive position coaches -- James Laurinaitis and Matt Guerrieri -- met with the media yesterday and they were nothing short of extremely impressive. What were our main takeaways from both Q&A sessions? Laurinaitis basically said Cody Simon is locked in as a starting linebacker. Who will start alongside of him? As for the safeties, Guerrieri is inheriting a proverbial gold mine with the talent in his room with the likes of Caleb Downs and Lathan Ransom. As for Sonny Styles, will he be in Guerrieri's room this year? Or Laurinaitis'? Time will tell on that one, but both coaches had interesting things to say about the talented junior. Also, the CFP made its "5+7" format official on Tuesday. We see one major problem with it. We discuss in detail on the show, but the gist of it is we do not think the ACC and Big 12 should be on equal footing with the Big Ten and SEC when it comes to automatic berths and first-round byes. We explain further. Matt Baxendell and Dave Biddle discuss all of that and more on the Wednesday 5ish. Are Ohio State's linebackers national championship-caliber?
2024/02/20
It is going to be a fun day on the Ohio State football beat as the media will interview freshly-minted Ohio State linebackers coach James Laurinaitis, as well as new safeties coach Matt Guerrieri this afternoon. Today's show will focus mostly on the Buckeyes' 2024 linebacking corps, specifically whether this group is good enough to get the Buckeyes where they want to go. Who will be the two starters? Who will be the top backups? Is Sonny Styles definitely going to move down to LB, or might he stay at safety? Or might he play several different positions? Dave Biddle flies solo on today's show to discuss all of that, take a look at Ohio State's 2024 safeties and more.  All of that is coming your way on the Tuesday 5ish. Animal instincts | 2024 defense shaping up to be elite | 2-year extension for LJ | Holt's replacement?
2024/02/16
The Little Animal got a big promotion. James Laurinaitis is now Ohio State's linebackers coach after serving as a grad assistant in 2023. Now, to be clear, Laurinaitis basically ran the LB room last season, but now he's a full-fledged position coach. How will this impact the Buckeyes on the field? What about on the recruiting front? What we also find interesting is that Ohio State's defense is shaping up to be elite in 2024. You could of course argue Jim Knowles' unit was elite in 2023 as the Buckeyes finished No. 3 in the country in total defense and No. 2 in scoring defense. Outstanding numbers? Definitely. Skewed just a bit because of an historically bad offensive season for many Big Ten teams? Sure. (The four-best defenses in the country last year were Big Ten teams, including Penn State, Michigan and Iowa.) But it was still an outstanding defense. However, we have little doubt the 2024 defense will be even better. The one area of possible concern is at linebacker, but the Buckeyes do have talent there ... and now a former All-American and long-time NFL standout as their LB coach. Also, what do we think about OSU defensive line coach Larry Johnson inking a 2-year extension? Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle discuss all things Silver Bullets on the Friday 5ish, who we want as Chris Holtmann's replacement and more.  To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Primary secondary targets | Ohio State camp offers up for grabs | Who replaces Holtmann?
2024/02/15
Too much secondary talent to consider? That's crazy talk. Is it? Bill Kurelic and Mark Porter are back by popular demand to discuss plenty - including Ohio State's Class of 2025 secondary recruiting.  So many great names ... but is there enough room at the Inn? We dive deep with some help from our LIVE viewers (specifically from Texas). Also: LIVE viewers asked a ton of great questions that Bill and Mark tackled. And yes, we finish with chatter about Chris Holtmann's firing yesterday and where the basketball program should turn now. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! Instant Reaction: Ohio State fires Chris Holtmann | Why now? | Possible replacments
2024/02/14
News broke at just past noon today that Ohio State has fired head men’s basketball coach Chris Holtmann. The Buckeyes dropped to 14-11 overall and 4-10 in Big Ten play with Tuesday night’s 62-54 loss at No. 20 Wisconsin. That loss matched the OSU school record with its 16th consecutive road loss. Steve Helwagen and Patrick Murphy are here to offer their reactions and what the next steps are. Will Howard expectations | Depth chart behind him? | Hoops coach hot board
2024/02/14
What are expectations for Will Howard as Ohio State's starting quarterback in 2024? What will the depth chart look like behind him? Which QB is most likely to transfer after spring ball? Switching gears but sticking with the offense, what kind of impact will Chip Kelly have for the Buckeyes? How good of a hiring was this by Ryan Day and what does it say about how Day sees his own role moving forward? Ohio State's men's basketball team suffered its school-record 16th-straight road loss last night at Wisconsin and it feels like the Chris Holtmann era will end after this season. Let's take a look at a basketball coaching hot board of sorts. Who do we want to replace Holtmann and get the basketball program back to where it should be? Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle on the Wednesday 5ish to discuss that and much more. Oh, Henry! | Fancying Florida | Can Chip recruit?
2024/02/13
We are going to find out if Ohio State is really WRU. The lone commitment in the Class of 2026 - Cincy star Chris Henry, Jr., - is transferring to national power Mater Dei in Santa Ana, Calif.  Guess what? That's now B1G country! Programs like USC, UCLA and Oregon will be much closer than Ohio State. Will Henry, Jr., fall in love with West Coast life? We dive deep on the NFL legacy's possible future with our infotainment specialists: Bill Kurelic and Mark Porter. Also discussed: Another Florida receiver in sight; Chip Kelly's recruiting chops; Tavien St. Clair's national spotlight grab and much more. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! What will Chip Kelly bring to Buckeyes' offense?
2024/02/12
What do we expect out of Chip Kelly as Ohio State's offensive coordinator? What can he do specifically to enhance Ryan Day's offense, which has been one of the best offenses in college football during the 5-year Day era? Speaking of Day and his coaching staff, how will he fill the final vacancy? Was he waiting until after the Super Bowl so he could perhaps snag a coach from either the Chiefs or 49ers? Ohio State 2025 quarterback commitment Tavien St. Clair continues to impress. He had an excellent junior season in 2023 and always turns heads at recruiting events. On Saturday in Las Vegas, St. Clair won the "accuracy challenge" at Nike's "The Next One." Dan Rubin and Dave Biddle discuss all of that and more on the Monday 5ish. Dave Bittle needs to get off Tommy Eichenberg’s back. Tommy leads the team in tackles and was the leading tackler against Maryland.

Dave Biddle a inadequate host. Poor delivery, limited information, and all emotion. Need intelligent commentary, not Buddy bar talk.
