'TED Talks' co-creator, author June Cohen
2026/11/02
From the pilgrimage to the sauna. From the cold plunge to a festival. From an athletic extreme to communal grieving. Did our ancestors have it all figured out? Can looking back and remembering what people did in ancient times fix our modern day problems? This question is explored in the new book The Great Remembering by June Cohen, co-creator of "TED Talks" and the podcast network behind "Masters of Scale." Cohen's book speaks directly to our crisis of connection and purpose, but locates the remedy not in reframing how we see ourselves, but in recovering the communal practices that made humans feel they mattered in the first place. Guests: June Cohen, co-creator of "TED Talks"/author, The Great Remembering
Weekly Reporter Roundtable: Tuesday's Midterm Election
2026/11/02
No longer airing in Ohio is the controversial ad featuring Democrat governor candidate Amy Acton's estranged mother. Republican governor candidate Vivek Ramaswamy pulled it ahead of tomorrow's election, saying the ad's planned run was over. But the question is who did the ad help the most: Ramaswamy or Acton? Voters will determine Ohio's new governor and whether a former (Democrat Sherrod Brown) or current U.S. senator (Republican Jon Husted) returns to Washington and other statewide and statehouse races. On the affordability front, why are Ohio gas prices above the national average weeks after state lawmakers passed a 90-day tax moratorium? It's all coming up on this week's reporter roundtable. Guests: Jo Ingles, senior reporter, Ohio Public Radio Statehouse News BureauMarty Schladen, reporter, Ohio Capital JournalNoah Blundo, executive editor, Hannah News Service

Federal officials sending monitors to observe several US polling sites for Election Day
2026/10/29
The U.S. Justice Department will send election monitors to three Ohio counites next week on Election Day.  The Boards of Elections in Franklin, Medina and Cuyahoga counites were emailed letters informing them that the Civil Rights Division of the DOJ plans to monitor those locations. This is part of what is expected to be the DOJ's largest election monitoring effort and includes all 50 states.  It is said that they will only observe the election operations and won't interfere in the voting process.  The letters also say they will check for compliance with federal laws such as the Voting Rights Act, the National Voter Registration Act, the Uniformed and Overseas Absentee Voting Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act. We will discuss what this means for Ohio, the state's voters and voting around the country.   Guests: Antone White, director, Franklin County Board of ElectionsAndrew Tobias, state government and politics reporter, Signal OhioSteven Huefner, deputy director, election Llaw, Ohio State Moritz College of LawJen Miller, executive director, League of Women Voters of Ohio
The impact of attack ads on elections
2026/10/28
Most Ohioans have been tired of seeing political ads for weeks. That was before the controversial ad from Republican Vivek Ramaswamy featuring Democrat Amy Acton's estranged mother brought the Ohio governor's race into the national spotlight. As Election Day gets closer, we ask why are personal attack ads used and do they actually work? And then there's the money behind them as millions have are being poured into Ohio and elsewhere. Guests: Jessica Piper, senior data reporter, PoliticoDavid Niven, associate professor, UC College of Arts and Sciences’ School of Public and International AffairsEric Petry, counsel in the Brennan Center’s Elections and Government Program
Tech Tuesday: Deepfake images increasing in politics with rise of AI
2026/10/27
AI seems to be the word of the year. It's your talking assistant, included in curriculums, and has been taking the internet by storm through generated content. In this sweep across all sectors, it begs the question, what role does AI play in politics? One of the ways AI is making an impact in politics is through the increased presence of deepfake images. Using the term “heat wave” might be similar to calling a monsoon a rain shower. A new term has developed. Heat storms are extreme weather conditions of prolonged high temperatures that exist in large swaths of the planet. TextNow has introduced a $150 phone designed for kids. Meanwhile, Airbnb is updating its cleaning policy. Guests: Kaylyn Jackson Schiff, co-director, Purdue’s Governance and Responsible AI LabMaurice "Mo" Tamman, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, ReutersRussell Holly, director of commerce content, CNET
Don Kissick, Libertarian candidate for Ohio governor
2026/10/27
The major party candidates for governor and Senate are getting all the attention and money, but there are other candidates in those races. Could Libertarian Don Kissick, who is running for Ohio governor, be a spoiler? Libertarians typically lean Republican. Could Kissick pull enough votes away from Republican Vivek Ramaswamy to allow Democrat Amy Acton to win? In a race that is polling as a near tie, this is something to consider. Kissick isn’t the only third-party candidate on the Nov. 3 ballot. Voters will see Libertarian candidates in other races, as well as a progressive Socialist who is listed as an Independent on the ballot for U.S. Senate. We look at the rise of third-party candidates and what history tells us about their success. Previously, All Sides aired interviews with Democrat Dr. Amy Acton on Oct. 21 and Republican Vivek Ramaswamy on Oct. 6. Guests: Don Kissick, Libertarian candidate for Ohio governorChristopher Devine, author/political science professor, University of DaytonBernard Tamas, political science professor, Valdosta State University
Interest in Greek life at colleges continues to grow despite negative attention
2026/10/26
Colleges and universities have long had a troubled history with fraternities, whether it was hazing resulting in student deaths to allegations of sexual assault. Allegations of sexual assault at a Cornell University fraternity house and an alleged cocaine trafficking ring at Penn State have been shedding a negative light on fraternities. This comes at a time when fraternity membership is growing, and schools are seeing them as a means of improving recruitment and retention. We’ll look at how colleges and universities address the issues surrounding Greek life on campus on this hour of All Sides. Guests: Douglas Belkin, higher education reporter, Wall Street JournalJohn Hechinger, author/senior editor, Bloomberg News photo: Adrian Kraus /AP
Weekly Reporter Roundtable: Ramaswamy's controversial attack ad impacts Ohio governor's race
2026/10/26
The fallout from Republican Vivek Ramaswamy's attack ad against his opponent, Democrat Amy Acton, in the Ohio governor's race continues to reverberate across the state and beyond. Gov. Mike DeWine called on the Ramaswamy campaign to take down the ad, though DeWine did not withdraw his endorsement of the Republican who wants to take his place. President Donald Trump weighed in, saying to let the ad air, but many Republicans disagree. While the campaign for governor dominates the news, it's the outcome of the statehouse legislative races that determine governing power. Will the Republicans' supermajority hold in Ohio? Plus, more presidential visits to Ohio: former President Barack Obama makes his first stop and President Trump plans to come to the state for a third time this month. We're discussing all of it on this week's Reporter Roundtable. Guests: Sarah Donaldson, reporter, Ohio Public Radio Statehouse News BureauLaura Hancock, state politics and policy reporter, Cleveland.comShane Stegmiller, reporter, Hannah News Service photo: Jacquelyn Martin / AP

Columbus' ballot Issues 8 and 9 explained
2026/10/22
Columbus voters have a big choice to make this November, with two measures on the ballot looking to overhaul City Council. The current system, approved by voters in 2018, has faced a lot of disapproval, with critics and even some council members calling it "stupid," "wacky," and "confusing." Both Issue 8 and Issue 9 want to change who gets to vote for which council member and one of the proposals could even add new seats to the mix. Issue 8 is a simple, one-page amendment started by a grassroots citizen group. It would change the rules, so you only vote for the council member representing your specific district. Issue 9 was put on the ballot by the city council itself. It is a longer, six-page measure that does the exact same thing as Issue 8, but adds more elements: Issue 9 would expand the council by adding four new at-large members that everyone in the city votes for.Issue 9 would also trigger a redrawing of the city's district map in 2028 and change how many signatures candidates need to get on the ballot. We're having an in-depth conversation about Issues 8 and 9 on this hour of All Sides. Guests: George Shillcock, reporter, WOSU Public MediaWill Petrik, campaign manager, Our City Our SayRob Dorans, president pro tempore/District 3 Representative, Columbus City Council
What does it mean to be a 'villager'?
2026/10/21
Many people say it takes a village to raise a child. But really, it takes a village to do a lot of things. No one can truly get through life on their own, but if you expect a village to help you and be at your side when you need them, you must also be a villager. You must be at your village's side when they need you. But what does it mean to be a villager? What does it require from us? Guests: Katie Eu, lifestyle creatorKorie Little, sociology professor, Ohio State UniversityKate Oliphint, director, Center for HumanKindness, The Columbus Foundation
Dr. Amy Acton discusses run to become governor, attack ad featuring estranged mother
2026/10/21
The Ohio governor’s race this November features two major-party candidates with no prior experience in elected office. Whoever wins will be one for the history books: Dr. Amy Acton would be the first woman elected to the position. Republican Vivek Ramaswamy would be the first Indian American. In this pre-recorded interview, Acton talks about the issues, political ads and why she won't debate Ramaswamy. Acton also discusses an attack ad featuring her estranged mother. All Sides interviewed Ramaswamy on Oct. 5. Click here to listen to that interview. All Sides will also be airing an interview with Libertarian governor candidate Don Kissick soon. Editor's Note: During this interview with Amy Acton, which was recorded in the afternoon on Tuesday, Oct. 20, All Sides Host Amy Juravich said the attack ad was created by an outside party, a conservative political blogger named Walter Curt. This is not correct. The ad was posted by Curt and has been widely circulated. Late Tuesday evening, Ohio Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy confirmed to reporters that the ad was from his campaign and that Acton's mother, Donna Arthur, was not paid to participate. Guests: Dr. Amy Acton, Democratic candidate for Ohio governorRobert Alexander, political science professor/founding director, Democracy and Public Policy Network, Bowling Green State UniversityBrianna Mack, associate professor of politics and government, Ohio Wesleyan University
