481: What 5 Playing-Based Methods Taught Us (And What They Didn’t Say About Adults) with Ian Belloso
2026/10/05
Five methods in four weeks taught Tim and Ian a lot, but one question kept surfacing: what about the adults? Today Ian Belloso returns, not as co-host this time, but as the guest, to synthesize everything from last month's playing-based series. We talk the gate not the date, Simply Music's lead sheets for Beatles songs, and why four-chord composing hooks teenagers.
Tim and Ian wrapped up the month-long series on playing-based methods.Ian shared his biggest surprise: every method starts reading in lesson one.Why reading really means decoding notation, not understanding music itself.Tim explained Neil Moore's idea of widening the door, not lowering the bar.How Kendra's Suzuki background proved more flexible than expected.Ian explained why his method map compares approaches by teacher readiness, not type. Why "it's the gate, not the date" reframes when students start reading. How adult students already arrive with a playlist and developed musical taste.Tim shared why asking for a student's top ten songs still works as a hook.Ian explained why adults become their own life coach without a parent figure. How Simply Music's lead sheets get adults playing Beatles songs quickly.Tim highlighted four-chord composing as a powerful hook for teenage students.

Beginners quit when reading music feels like decoding. Andrew Ingkavet built the Musicolor Method® to change that. Color makes notation readable from the first lesson, then scaffolds step by step to the standard staff. Piano is where most kids start, and the approach now works on ukulele, guitar, violin, viola, and drums too. Andrew is a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and composer, a former MTV VJ, and author of Superpowers Through Music. He founded Musicolor Method NYC, where 20 teachers use the method every week. Today he trains music teachers of every instrument to bring Musicolor into their own studios.

480: Listen, Sing, Play, Read: Exploring the Yamaha Approach with Bec Stewart
2026/09/28
Everyone can create music, that's the whole point of this month's series. Today marks Ian Belloso's last episode as co-host, and we're wrapping up playing-based teaching with Bec Stewart, twenty-year Yamaha veteran and now our TopMusic Community Manager. We unpack why Yamaha puts listening first, how group lessons build musical confidence, and Bec's own listen, sing, play, read sequence.
Tim and Ian wrapped up this month's series with the Yamaha method.Bec explained how Yamaha integrates reading rather than deferring it.Why cultivating the ability to create sits at the heart of Yamaha's mission. How group lessons help students internalize music through solfège and singing.Bec shared why one-on-one lessons struggle to recreate that same collaborative spark. Why timely education means teaching each skill when a child is developmentally ready. How a four-year-old's strongest sense shapes the Yamaha starting point.Ian asked how movement and off-the-bench activities fit into Yamaha lessons. Why ongoing teacher training keeps a sound-first curriculum consistent at scale.Bec shared why she still teaches listening, singing and playing before reading. How writing her own sight reading books filled a gap for exam prep.

479: Teaching Piano the Way Kids Learn to Talk with Krista Jadro
2026/09/20
Reading music might be the very last thing we should teach. Today, I'm joined by co-host Ian Belloso and our guest Krista Jadro, piano faculty at the Gordon Institute for Music Learning, to unpack music learning theory and the concept of audiation. We talk through resting tones, singing before symbols, and why students don't open a reading book until well into their training.
Tim explained how discovering music learning theory changed his own teaching.Krista shared how a jazz band video convinced her MLT was the way to teach. Why tonal and rhythm patterns are taught separately in music learning theory. How audiation differs from simply hearing or memorizing a tune.Krista demonstrated audiation using a folk tune to show tonic and dominant patterns.Ian asked how singing and movement fit into a typical beginner lesson. Why the resting tone gives students a sense of home in the music. How movement stays continuous rather than stopping to keep the beat.Tim explained the difference between music learning theory, GIML and Music Moves for Piano. Why formal reading isn't introduced until around age ten to twelve.Krista shared her one practical exercise every teacher can try tomorrow. Why Edwin Gordon believed every student is born with musical potential.

476: Silent Films, Silly Lyrics and Hungry Hippos: Creative Composing Sparks with Angeline Bell
2026/08/31
There's something incredibly freeing about handing a hesitant improviser a black and white silent film and just watching what happens. Today, I'm chatting with pianist, teacher and composer Angeline Bell to wrap up our month on composition and improvisation, and she's brought a piano's worth of ideas with her. We talk through using silent films, lyrics, duet improvising and pop song rearranging as sparks for composition. Angeline also shares how she balances all of that creativity alongside exam prep and recital season.
Angeline shared how catching COVID in 2022 sparked her shift into composing. How Squeezy the Squirrel led to her first publishing deal with Editions Musica Ferrum. She explained how nature walks and travel inspire her collection themes. How silent film clips spark composition by removing the music entirely.Tim highlighted why using percussion instruments beyond piano keeps ideas open-ended.She shared how silly lyrics and rhythm cards turn pets and hobbies into songs.Improvised duet accompaniments make beginner melodies sound full and professional. Why pop song chord progressions are an easy entry point into composing. She explained how students make a borrowed pop song their own.The importance of writing music by hand alongside notation software.Tim highlighted Angeline's advice to play to each student's individual strengths.

475: Prize-Winning Composition Case Studies with Devi & Mary
2026/08/24
There's no single right way to get students composing, and this episode proves it. Today, I'm sharing a chat I recorded live at TopMusicLive in Sydney this year, where I sat down with two TopMusicPro members, Devi and Mary, whose students' pieces won our members-only composition competition. We unpack Devi's simple chord challenge, a hand-crossing piece born from improvisation, and the surprisingly honest story behind one student's ChatGPT-assisted song.
Tim explained the four categories of the members-only TopMusic Composition Competition. How Devi's chord challenge helps young students start composing. Why Harvie built his diminished chord piece Creeping around just four notes. How Juniper composed Clouds one hand at a time before adding lyrics.Devi shared how the music came first and the words were written afterward.Mary explained how Arianna's hand-crossing piece began as an improvisation. Why the piece was written in the middle of studio chaos after a cyclone. How Maya used ChatGPT for a chord progression starting point.Mary shared how she helped Maya reclaim ownership of her own song.Tim explained why repertoire remixing is an easy inroad to creativity. Why notation is part of the learning, not just a competition requirement.Tim highlighted why constraints and improvisation drive composition success.

474: How to Teach Guided Composition for Music Teachers with Chrissy Ricker
2026/08/17
Most of us grew up being trained to be accurate at the piano, not necessarily inventive, and it's a mindset many teachers are still trying to unlearn. Today, I'm chatting with composer Chrissy Ricker about guided composition, a practical way to lead students through creating their own music using melody, harmony and rhythm as building blocks. We dig into her roll the dice worksheets for reluctant composers, why she starts every student on pencil and paper before notation software, and how repertoire pieces can double as composition models.
Tim explained why creativity was rarely a focus of music lessons decades ago.Why Chrissy believes all musicians are inherently creative performers. How guided composition uses templates to ease students into composing. She explained functional music theory as putting concepts into musical context. How guided composition builds on melody, harmony and rhythm as building blocks. Why splitting composition projects across several lessons reduces time pressure. How roll-the-dice worksheets help reluctant composers get started.Tim highlighted Mozart's own musical dice game as the inspiration. Why Chrissy always starts students with pencil and paper before notation software. How composing strengthens students' aural skills and note-reading ability. How repertoire pieces can be reverse engineered into composition models.

470: Lab Time: Where Independent Learning Happens
2026/07/13
If you've ever wondered what students can do independently while you're teaching another lesson, this episode is for you. I'm sharing a training from one of our TopMusicPro group teaching courses, where Nicola Cantan introduces the concept of "lab time"— a simple but powerful way to keep students engaged in meaningful, independent learning. Whether you're already experimenting with overlapping lessons or just curious about group teaching, this episode will give you plenty of practical ideas to explore.
Tim introduces lab time as a key strategy for successful overlapping lessons.Nicola Cantan explains how lab time supports purposeful independent learning.Lab stations can include iPads, digital pianos, games, theory books, or computers.Students use lab time while another student receives individual instruction.Lab activities reinforce lesson concepts through additional guided practice.Independent work is best suited to students who can read and follow directions.Nicola recommends using headphones, MIDI-enabled apps, and durable equipment.Teachers can charge a small additional fee to cover equipment and software costs.Lab time helps build student independence while increasing studio efficiency.Tim encourages teachers to start small by adding a short lab session to one lesson.

468: Why Automated Tuition is a No-Brainer for Music Teachers
2026/06/29
This month, we’ve been focusing on studio transformation, and sometimes the biggest improvements come from solving the simplest problems. In this episode, I’m sharing a replay of a conversation from the TopMusic Piano Podcast hosted by Dr. Rachel Ehring. Rachel dives into one of the most common frustrations music teachers face, billing and invoicing, and explains why moving to automated tuition can save time, reduce stress, and help create a more sustainable studio business.
Rachel explores common studio pain points that create unnecessary stress for teachers. How systems and procedures can make studio management significantly easier. Why creating SOPs helps reduce repetitive work and save valuable time.Rachel discusses using videos to clearly communicate studio policies to parents. She highlights why make-up lesson requests often become a recurring challenge. How automated billing systems eliminate the need for manual invoicing and payment chasing.Examples of teachers losing income because of weak payment systems. How studio management software helps separate business processes from personal relationships. Why automatic payments improve cash flow and reduce administrative workload.Rachel explains why software costs are often outweighed by time savings and efficiency gains.Tim encourages teachers to explore monthly billing and automated tuition systems.
