Description

We are seeing an ever-increasing burden of chronic disease, primarily driven by our food and food system. This is perpetuated by agricultural, food and health care policies that don’t support health. We need to rethink disease and reimagine a food system and a health care system the protects health, unburdens the economy from the weight of obesity and chronic disease, protects the environment, helps reverse climate change and creates a nation of healthy children and citizens. This podcast is a place for deep conversations about the critical issues of our time in the space of health, wellness, food and politics. New episodes are released every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning. I hope you'll join me. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Why the Vegan Twin Study Got it Wrong
2024/02/23
View the Show Notes For This Episode Get Free Weekly Health Tips from Dr. Hyman Sign Up for Dr. Hyman’s Weekly Longevity Journal Get Ad-free Episodes & Dr. Hyman+ Audio Exclusives Today, we're zooming in on a groundbreaking study that comes from Stanford University and was recently published in JAMA Network Open. The researchers put a vegan diet head-to-head with an omnivorous diet in twenty-two pairs of identical twins. The buzz around this study has been immense, sparking conversations everywhere—from social media to professional circles. Adding to the excitement, this research forms the basis of a new Netflix documentary called "You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment."  In this episode of my Health Bites series, I discuss the many conflicts of interest, funding sources, and hidden agendas that were not fully disclosed but could have had a major hand in clouding the study's conclusions and real-world applications. We’ll also get into the Netflix docuseries itself—what they got right vs. what they got wrong, as well as the Functional Medicine approach to diet and how we can feed our bodies to create health while taking care of the planet in a healthy, sustainable, and ethical way. Hey everyone! The February Ask A Doctor Anything is here and available exclusively to the Dr. Hyman+ Community. As you may know, Dr. Boham is the Medical Director of Dr. Hyman’s UltraWellness Center. Topics Discussed: •What is the difference between HRT vs. BHRT? Is there any concern about being on HRT long-term, particularly from someone who went through premature ovarian failure at the age of 34 and is now 42 years old? (0:45 ) •If you want to focus on losing belly fat—is it better to work out (strength training) in a fasted state in the morning or after a small meal? (3:58) •What are your thoughts on a post-menopausal female struggling with ADHD symptoms and terrible anxiety? Are there any supplements that would be helpful? Are there any dangers to be aware of if taking a stimulant (Vyvanse) and HRT? (6:40) •What is your advice for a 56-year-old female who went into surgical menopause in 2021 and is experiencing the following symptoms: no energy, no sex drive, mood swings, and hot flashes? (20:44) •Is grass-fed protein powder with beef protein isolate the same as beef collagen protein powder? (25:37) •What is gout? What are the top foods that increase your risk of a gout flare-up? How do you treat it using functional medicine? (28:13) •Is there any way to treat sleep apnea other than with a bi-PAP or C-PAP machine? (32:46) •What is the best approach to treating Grover’s disease? (36:17) •What is the difference between infrared and red light therapy? What are the benefits of using one of these devices? Can it help reset your circadian rhythm? (39:18) •How much of the damage to the brain/body of micotoxins is reversible? Where is the safest place to live if you have a mold issue and cannot build a pre-fab or remediate your multiple-dwelling house? (43:03) •What is the best way to treat mold illness beyond infrared sauna, binder protocols, and removing oneself from the source? Would a medically supervised water fast be beneficial? Are there different levels of mold sensitivity? If so, how do you determine your level of sensitivity? Does the treatment vary based on the level of sensitivity?
