EP 235: Rehab Is Training: How Dr. Katie Dabrowski Bridges Pain, Performance, and Neuroscience
2026/10/05
In this episode with Katie Dabrowski, we dive into topics from aligning physiology and psychology, how important communication is, what is really the bridge between rehab and training, pain science, and how to have a trainable menu while having nagging issues and still get great results. That, and much more in this episode!
Dr. Katie Dabrowski, DPT, CSCS is a physical therapist and strength coach whose passion for disrupting the traditional model of physical therapy led her to Old Bull Athletics. Dr. Dabrowski is a neuroscience faculty member at Nova Southeastern University and serves as an Advisory Board Member for the Society for Sport Neuroscience.
Her mission is to change healthcare, promoting the notion that training is healthcare, and that rehab is simply training in the presence of injury.
IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN:
=> The "Absence of Pain" Fallacy: Why chasing a 100% pain-free state is an unrealistic goal for active adults, and how learning to tolerate "acceptable discomfort" unlocks continued athletic performance.
=> Catastrophizers vs. Confrontational Clients: How identifying a client's psychological response to pain dictates whether you should expand their "trainable menu" or gently push their discomfort boundaries.
=> Positional Tweaks for Sciatic & Lower Back Nerve Tension: Simple anatomical modifications—like standing on a squat wedge or altering neck angles—that relieve nerve strain while preserving heavy hinging workouts.=> Why Speed and Power Detrain in Under Two Weeks: Why athletic qualities like reactivity and acceleration degrade rapidly without frequent touchpoints, and how to keep them in a rehab program without aggravating injuries.
=> The "Movement Nihilism" Pendulum Swing: Why the industry shifted from overly rigid, fearful form obsession to claiming "form doesn't matter at all"—and where true biomechanical expertise actually lies.
=> Why Karen from Accounting Doesn't Need a 1RM Jefferson Curl: How to balance progressive loading of spinal flexion without exposing beginner or unconditioned clients to unnecessary joint risk.
=> Rehab is Just "Training in the Presence of Injury": How Dr. Katie Dabrowski structures rehab sessions identically to high-level strength workouts by scaling intensity buckets rather than relying on light resistance bands.
=> The True Role of Manual Therapy: Why massage, needling, and soft-tissue work don't "heal" or "realign" torn tissue, but act as essential tools to down-regulate the nervous system and open a window for progressive loading.
=> The "Demonstration" Effect in Pain Psychology: Why telling a client movement is safe rarely works, but creating a pain-free movement experience immediately shatters their fear-avoidance beliefs.
=> Why Messy Reps Are Essential for Motor Learning: How the nervous system relies on physical errors to build context, and why over-cueing a client during a new exercise slows down skill acquisition.
=> “A Cue is a Reminder": Why shouting technical cues at a client performing a brand-new movement causes mental overload, and how exposure itself acts as the best primary cue.
=> Metabolic Health as a Cause of Musculoskeletal Pain: How chronic conditions like diabetes, obesity, and systemic inflammation degrade tendon, ligament, and bone tissue quality far beyond mechanical wear-and-tear.
=> The Neurological Roots of Sarcopenia: Why age-related strength loss happens in the brain's motor unit recruitment long before physical muscle mass disappears—and why athletic drive belongs in every aging adult's program.
=> The Social Media "Hate-Posting" Trap: Why public arguments and jargon-heavy critiques of other trainers alienate prospective clients and stall professional industry progress.

EP 234: Think Again on Program Design, Coaching, and Leadership w/ Mike Boyle
2026/09/09
It’s always a treat having my friend Mike Boyle come on the podcast and have a conversation about coaching, program design, gym ownership, leadership, and life.
Mike Boyle Strength & Conditioning was founded in 1996 by Mike Boyle and Bob Hanson. Prior to co-founding MBSC, Mike served as the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach at Boston University for 15 years. He also served as the Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Boston Bruins from 1991-1999, the US Women’s Olympic Ice Hockey Team and for the World Champion Boston Red Sox.
Mike is known worldwide as one of the foremost experts in the field of strength and conditioning, and spends his time lecturing, teaching, training, and writing. He is known for his no-nonsense approach to strength and conditioning and persists in a single effort: to provide safe and effective performance enhancement training for athletes and adults of all ages and training backgrounds. Additionally, Mike continues to leave his mark on the field by expanding access to his world-renowned training programs.
From the first location in Winchester, to the current premier location in Woburn, and newest location in Middleton, MBSC continues to grow and positively impact the lives of adults and athletes who walk through its doors.
IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN:
=> The Percentage Theory of Time Perception: Why the years seem to pass exponentially faster as you age, and how viewing your life through simple math changes your daily perspective.
=> The "Last Time" Rule of Fatherhood: The subtle psychological shift every parent must make to appreciate fleeting milestones before they quietly disappear forever.
=> Why the "Look Good Naked" Pitch Fails Older Adults: How smart gym owners are shifting away from surface-level aesthetics toward the high-value adult longevity market.
=> Facebook vs. Instagram for Client Acquisition: The critical demographic divide between where fitness professionals hang out online versus where 50+ prospective clients actually look for help.
=> “Getting Out of Bed" as a Primary Performance Metric: Why solving early-morning joint stiffness matters infinitely more to middle-aged adults than adding weight to a back squat.
=> The Danger of the "Age Is Just a Number" Myth: Why ignoring biological aging in your programming hurts your clients—and what smart coaches do to keep older adults thriving safely.
=> The "Jobs to be Done" Marketing Framework: How a classic consumer-research strategy used by major candy brands can reveal the real reason clients hire your gym.
=> Why the Barbell Back Squat Is Overrated for Everyday Function: Mike Boyle’s blunt take on why loading a barbell on an adult's spine is unnecessary for real-life mobility and health.
=> The "In the Shallow Pool, the Midget Stands Tall" Effect: Why standing out in today's fitness industry is surprisingly easy if you avoid the dogmatic mistakes most trainers make.
=> Top-Down vs. Bottom-Up Programming: How to structure world-class training programs around real-world constraints like limited space, sparse equipment, and specific client needs.
=> The "32 Handshakes" Local Community Strategy: How combining high-touch, in-person outreach with modern social media creates an unstoppable local marketing engine.
=> The "Unreasonable Hospitality" In-Staff Approach: How MBSC balances technical skill training with soft-skill development to turn coaches into long-term client magnets.
=> The "Danny Meyer Salt Shaker" Analogy for Gym Owners: Why managing a team requires constantly nudging standards back to center without losing your patience or enthusiasm.
=> Overcoming the "Artificial Harmony" Trap: How identifying passive agreement in staff meetings helps gym leaders tackle low-level operational friction before it ruins facility culture.

EP 233: From Cleared to Capable: How Language, Mindset, and Graded Exposure Redefine Pain w/ Dr. Sean Pastuch
2026/09/02
Dr. Sean Pastuch is back on the podcast, this time we dive into his new book “Live More, Hurt Less” and helping clients get from cleared to capable.
Dr. Sean Pastuch, DC, grew up around the fitness, health, and wellness industry. And when he graduated Chiro school, he ended up opening a clinic and a CrossFit gym. He didn’t want to be that Chiro who tells you, “You need to this exercise and be on “X” program.” Then, pat you on the back and say see you next week.
He works with people and athletes, who don’t want to deal with pain and injury anymore. And at the same time, don’t want to stop their training or don’t want to keep modifying their workouts every time there’s a workout that has overhead movements.
IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN:
=> The Fallacy of "Fragility" and Invalidation: Why telling clients to "just stop" doing activities when they hurt creates a self-fulfilling cycle of frailty, muscular atrophy, and heightened health anxiety.
=> The Psychosomatic Trap of Medical Diagnosis: How well-meaning doctors and therapists can accidentally catastrophic-size minor, age-normal MRI findings through poor choice of language—causing real, physical symptoms.
=> Why Pain Is a Capacity Problem, Not a Damage Problem: Discover how a client unable to dance for more than 30 seconds doesn't have a "bad back," but rather a stamina and load-capacity bottleneck that needs progressive exposure.
=> The Three Identities Driving Pain & Recovery: Learn why true long-term relief requires addressing your inner identity, physical movement expression, and social environment simultaneously rather than isolating physical symptoms.
=> The "Four Rules" to Distinguish Good Pain from Danger: A simple, 4-step framework to determine if workout discomfort is just noisy adaptation or an actual signal to stop and consult a medical professional.
=> How "Floors" Outperform Goals During Chronic Flare-ups: Why setting a absolute non-negotiable daily minimum (e.g., 5 minutes of nose-breathing push-ups) preserves psychological momentum when full workouts fall apart.
=> Bridging the "Messy Middle" from Cleared to Capable: Why traditional insurance-based physical therapy cuts off long before an athlete is actually ready to return to high-intensity training or sports.
=> The "Elevator vs. Escalator" Communication Shift for Doctors: How reframing a medical consultation from "help me stop hurting" to "help me get back to doing what I love" completely changes the treatment plan.
=> Overcoming the "All-or-Nothing" High-Performer Trap: Why elite, high-status clients often default to doing zero work out of shame when they don't have time for a full 60-minute session.
=> Desensitizing Fitness Overwhelm through Micro-Dosing: How assigning 2-to-3-minute non-strenuous interactions with home gym equipment can cure the psychological paralysis of loaded home gyms.
=> Why Walking Beats Cardio for Mental Processing: How 5-minute distraction-free, nose-breathing walks remove hyper-vigilance and help clients process subliminal life stressors affecting their pain.
=> The Hidden Danger of "Victimhood Communities": Why surrounding yourself with friends who normalize age-related decay and physical compromises actively sabotage your path to physical capability.

EP 230: The Art and Science Of Group Training Programming & Coaching w/ Kevin Carr
2026/07/26
Whether he is working as a coach or therapist, Kevin’s goal is to help people move better and become more resilient so that they can excel at the activities that they love.
Kevin has amassed a wealth of experience in the field of sports performance and personal training since starting at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning in 2008. Working with everyone from US Olympians looking for a competitive edge to the Average Joe or looking to shed some pounds and get healthier he has helped countless clients move better and live healthier lives.
Kevin is Co-Founder of the Certified Functional Strength Coach certification and Movement As Medicine Massage and Movement Therapy Clinic. He has traveled all over the world educating thousands of coaches and therapists about the MBSC coaching system.
IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN:
=> Embrace "Bottom-Up" Programming Constraints: Anyone can write a perfect theoretical workout program, but real world success depends on logistics like space limitations, equipment availability, and your team's coaching capabilities.
=> Organize Your Gym Like a Conveyor Belt: Spacing out individual lifting stations (squat racks, benches, platforms) ensures a highly efficient "conveyor belt" workflow that keeps groups moving rapidly without wasting time resetting equipment.
=> Pre-Load Equipment to Buy Back Coaching Time: On heavy lifting days, setting up multiple bars with varying preset weights prevents clients from burning precious session time changing out heavy plates, freeing you up to actually coach.
=> Hide the Medicine in the Cookie: Adult population programs shouldn't look wildly different from athletic tracks; keep the underlying training principles identical but scale back the complexity (e.g., swapping hurdle jumps for box jumps, or cleans for kettlebell deadlifts).
=> Leverage the Illusion of Choice: Clients are far more likely to commit to tough conditioning blocks when given options (e.g., choosing between bike intervals or treadmill sprints) rather than a rigid command.
=> Vary the Stimulus to Battle Adult Boredom: Keep clients engaged by subtly shifting training focuses throughout the year—such as cycling through isometric, eccentric, and density blocks—rather than changing foundational movement patterns entirely.
=> Teach Progressive Overload Tactfully: Adult clients don't always understand the relationship between lower repetitions and higher loads; proactively educate them on when they are ready to push their numbers up.
=> Don't Let Corrective Cues Stifling Positive Reinforcement: Coaches often spend so much time fixing client errors that they forget to highlight what's going well. Actively balance corrections with intentional positive praise.
=> Become a Social Chameleon: Great coaching requires high emotional intelligence. The high-energy, aggressive tone that motivates a seasoned athlete will feel like a psychological threat to a timid beginner.
=> Never Skip Weekly Staff Education: Gym operations and team alignment improve exponentially when a weekly, non-negotiable staff education meeting is built directly into the payroll.
=> Micro-Coaching Prevents Standard Slippage: Don't wait for formal performance reviews to fix subpar coaching technique. Deliver quick, constructive tips right on the gym floor directly after a session.
=> Be the Window, Not Just the Mirror: Great facility leaders don't just instruct from the sidelines; they stay on the floor to demonstrate standard-setting movement quality to their interns and clients alike.
=> Keep Curiosity Sharp at Every Age: The best coaches maintain a relentless, lifelong curiosity, constantly consuming new literature, watching clips, testing concepts, and refusing to get stuck in legacy programming methodologies.

EP 229: Nutritional Periodization & Training Alignment To Get Lean, Muscular, & Improve Performance w/ Jon Heck
2026/07/07
Jon Heck is a nutritionist, strength coach, business owner and a podcast host. He spent 9 years working in NFL and Division 1 college football strength and conditioning and then launched his coaching business Hammer and Chisel Performance full time. He walks the walks, and practices what he preaches, he is 6’7 300+, lives a bodybuilding lifestyle as well as competing in strongman and powerlifting. He played college football at the University of North Carolina.
In this episode we dive into nutrition periodization to get lean, build muscle, and improve performance, with specific breakdowns of protocols.
IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN:
=> The Bulk vs. Gain Fallacy: Jon Heck—a former 4-year UNC starter, D1 strength coach, and strongman competitor explains why standard "bulking" is an un-calculated recipe for fat accrual, and how to transition to a structured "gain phase."
=> Insulin Sensitivity & Fat Thresholds: Why trying to force a caloric surplus when you're sitting above 18% body fat backfires, and how getting lean first creates the ultimate metabolic environment for anabolic signaling.
=> The Gastric Emptying Hack: The hidden digestive advantage that occurs at the tail end of a true fat loss phase, and how to leverage your elevated appetite blueprint before hitting a growth cycle.
=> The Intraday Macro Pivot: Inside Jon’s strategy of breaking up the training week into high carbohydrate surplus days and baseline maintenance non-training days to give the digestive tract an absolute break.
=> The Inverted Rep Strategy: Why traditional high rep sets (like 4x8) cause excessive neuromuscular fatigue during a deficit, and how swapping to an 8x4 model maintains raw bar velocity and technique.
=> The 70% Set Volume Boundary: How to scale back your accessory lift volume in a cut while maintaining high relative neural drive to protect your current muscle mass from catabolic breakdown.
=> The Machine Isolation Disconnect: Why free weight barbell squats are highly flawed tools for maxing out pure quad hypertrophy, and the exact mechanics that make a hack squat or Smith machine far safer when training to absolute failure.
=> The Power PR Peak: The specific calendar sequence where a lifter carries maximum muscle frame potential and why that exact moment is when you transition back to heavy powerlifting and strongman milestones.
=> The 70% Psychologist Reality: Jon reveals why writing a nutrition plan on a spreadsheet is simple, but managing deep seated food addiction patterns requires a coach to operate primarily as a behavioral psychologist.
=> The HALT Self-Diagnostic Check: How encouraging clients to use an active journaling pause helps isolate whether a midnight pantry craving is derived from true physiological hunger or deep emotional anxiety.
=> Embracing the Uncomfortable Metric: A blunt call out to athletes who gladly endure the brutal physical strain of training camp but emotionally panic at the simple, short term discomfort of missing a comfort meal.
=> The Cumulative Daily Victory Matrix: Shifting your frame of mind from chasing a restrictive scale number to calculating your nutrition choices as an ongoing, daily stack of performance wins over your competition.
=> The Electrolyte Electrical Event: Opening the door to performance specific potassium, magnesium, and calcium loading to charge the cell after muscle contractions, rather than just treating electrolytes as a basic hydration protocol.
=> Building the Parachute Before the Cliff: Jon's blueprint for transitioning from a 60-hour a week D1 football coaching career into a highly automated, multi stream online training business without starting from a financial zero.

EP223: How To Supercharge Your Thinking, Future-Proof Your Brain & Stay Share At Any Age w/ Dr. Tommy Wood
2026/03/06
I was really excited about getting Dr. Tommy Wood on the show. This topic is close to my heart with both my parents having Parkinsons disease, and my Mom passing away with it a couple of years ago. Not only is Dr. Tommy an authority on this topic, he communicates it extremely well, and is also at the University of Washington, which makes him a neighbor.
Dr. Tommy Wood is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Neuroscience at the University of Washington, where his research focuses on brain health across the lifespan. This includes therapies for newborn brain injury, prevention and treatment of adult brain trauma, and factors that contribute to long-term cognitive function and decline.
Tommy received an undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of Cambridge, a medical degree from the University of Oxford, and a PhD in Physiology and Neuroscience from the University of Oslo. Alongside his academic training, Tommy has worked as a performance consultant to elite athletes in multiple sports. He is also a Director and Treasurer of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine, Head of Research for the dementia prevention charity Food for the Brain, and co-host of The Better Brain Fitness podcast.
IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN:
=> If you want a sharper brain at 45, 55, 65… start doing THIS now=> (it’s not crossword puzzles).
=> The #1 mistake smart, high-achieving people make with “brain optimization.” Tommy explains why it backfires.
=> Are we actually “overstimulated”… or “under-stimulated” in the ways that matter? This distinction changes everything.
=> How important is reading for kids as well as for adults when it comes to preserving cognitive health (this WILL surprise you).
=> The simplest daily habit that protects cognition long-term—and why it works better than most supplements.
=> The reason strength training and cardio are a MUST to future proof your mind from decline and dementia.
=> Why your attention feels wrecked lately (and what to do about it without going full monk mode).
=> The brain-health myth that keeps people stuck in fear—and the more useful way to think about cognitive decline risk.
=> Why doing novel, chaotic, unpredictable tasks is a cheat code in brain development (and some things you heard help with cognition, really don’t).
=> How to train your brain like you train your body: stimulus → recovery → adaptation (and what most people skip).
=> Tommy’s “minimum effective dose” framework for cognitive performance when life is busy and stressful.
=> What research says about our work and how it affects our brain development or decline (this will really make you think about your job!).
=> Movement and cognition: what matters most—intensity, consistency, skill/coordination, or simply more steps?
=> Sleep isn’t just “rest.” We break down what’s really happening to memory, learning, and mood.
=> Food for focus: the biggest levers for stable energy and clear thinking (without extreme diets).
=> What peptides, if any, are helpful with brain health - hear what decades of research have shown.

EP 222: The Principles & Strategies To Become An Elite Coach & Build A Successful Career w/ Dr. Sean Pastuch
2026/02/18
Sean has become a good friend and it’s taken me too long to get him on this podcast. His has built a very successful business in Active Life and we dive into what it takes to become successful and build a great career in the fitness industry.
With hands-on experience running a gym that does functional movements and treating people with injuries or previous injuries, which surface from having to move functionally, Sean started getting busier. And because of his unique approach, he also started getting requests from clients that used to see him but moved to another city asking for workout programs.
IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN:
=> Connection is key to ideation and leadership, (only) sitting behind a computer is not the way to build your career.
=> Sean shares how Luka said to be “Omnipresent” and doing that opened up opportunities.
=> Chronic pain affects a significant portion of the population and there’s opportunities to build those skills and benefit from solving those problems.
=> The fitness industry needs to address chronic pain effectively, something that isn’t taught much through governing bodies.
=> Productivity is linked to well-being and pain management; getting people out of pain is VERY valuable.
=> Successful coaches must be hardworking, curious, and client-centric - the foundation for any good coach.
=> Continuous learning is essential for growth in coaching; Sean and Luka discuss what they look for in potential.
=> Effective marketing messaging is crucial for business success - if you’re not clear, or if you confuse, you lose.
=> Building relationships can lead to valuable connections and opportunities; here’s our blueprint to connect with the best of the best.
=> Assess the value of your service on a scale of 1 to 5 with these three questions (this is KEY for the right market).
=> How to understand the demand for your service and the competition.
=> Avoid falling for guru marketing schemes.
=> Success is not just about money; it's about fulfillment (diving into the PERMA model and why it matters in your business)
=> Skill development is crucial for career advancement, what skills are you currently building to increase your stock?
=> Confidence comes from competence and proof of success; how we build our teams up.
=> Leverage your network for support and knowledge; how Sean connected with Jesse Itzler
=> Surround yourself with successful and inspiring individuals that raise your standard.

EP 221: How To Implement Agile Periodization, Coaching, and Fitness Business w/ Mladen Jovanovic
2026/02/08
Finally got my Balkan brother Mladen Jovanovic on the podcast to talk about agile periodization, constraint based coaching, coaching principles and how to think “bottom up” and not just “top down” when it comes to training clients. We also dive into best approaches to open a gym with a small group training model.
Mladen Jovanovic is a physical preparation coach from Belgrade, Serbia. He has worked internationally with various clubs and teams and is one of the leading minds in sport training. His knowledge of both science and technology is very impressive, and he really has a great grasp on training theory.
Coach Jovanovic was involved in physical preparation of professional, amateur and recreational athletes of various ages in sports such as basketball, soccer, volleyball, martial arts and tennis.
Mladen’s articles, interviews, articles, products and services can be found on his website at Complementary Training.
IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN:
=> What is agile periodization and how does it apply to sports performance training with athletes as well as with general population clients.
=> How does a coach build a program that actually gets better or more refined when things go wrong—such as injuries or scheduling conflicts—rather than falling apart?
=> One of Mladen’s principles is being a 'minimalist to be a maximalist'. How can a coach determine the minimum dose of training needed to move the needle without overtaxing an athlete's recovery.
=> Agile Periodization borrows heavily from software development. How do concepts like 'Iterative Planning' and 'Responding to Change over Following a Plan' practically change the way a coach writes a training block.
=> You talk about the tension between long-term goals and daily readiness. How does Agile Periodization allow a coach to maintain a 'North Star' while remaining flexible enough to pivot based on how an athlete feels that morning.
=> Client autonomy and preferences and how much they influence a training sessions and training block, Mladen and Luka discuss examples in the real world to help you become a better coach.
=> Instead of complex algorithms, Mladen often advocates for simple heuristics. What are 2 or 3 'rules of thumb' every gym owner or coach should use to decide if a session should be pushed or pulled back.
=> How a training program is a story we tell client and why is the 'completion ritual' or marking milestones so important for client buy-in and long-term satisfaction.
=> Why the constraint of coaching can many times be space, equipment, and training schedule, which means the program design should be filtered “bottom up” rather than “top down”
=> For gym owners, long-term planning can feel impossible with high member churn. How can they apply 'Agile' principles to their group programming to keep it effective for a wide variety of skill levels - Luka dives into his small group training model.
=> Mladen is opening a gym, Luka gives his insights on the training model for the ability of the gym to make an impact on clients while also being successful and profitable.
