Katie plays three new releases by Australian artists and then introduces her in-studio guest, well-known Narrm/Melbourne singer-songwriter and guitarist Barb Waters. Barb is a veteran of our city’s live music scene, and she and Katie chat about how that scene has moved from south to north of the river over the years, how her collaborative 2003 album Rosa Duet (re-released in 2023) was made, and how her two new songs were written and recorded. She performs one of those songs live in the studio, and we finish with a song by Folk Bitch Trio, of which Barb’s daughter Jeanie is a member. Here is the playlist:

Katie celebrates the 400th episode of Miss Chatelaine by revisiting the theme of her very first show in 2017: protest songs. Singer-songwriter, fiddler and activist Steel City Sue (Su Morley) joins Emmy Ryan and Katie to the studio to talk about the new Australian group Folk the System and her work with Rising Tide, and the important meaning behind the title of her new album, The Red Zone. Australia’s annual NAIDOC Week – known by many First Nations people as ‘Mob Christmas’ – celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Katie marks it every year with an hour of music by First Nations artists. The theme for 2026 is ’50 Years Deadly’, marking five decades of NAIDOC Week. The official website says the theme is “a tribute to the elders who stood firm, the organisers who made space, the artists who turned resistance into expression, and the communities who keep showing up, year after year [and is also] about the future and the next 50 years and the fight for justice continuing with new tools, new voices, and the same fire”.
